What's the "HSM" movie hold-up?

While High School Musical 2 continues to amass new fans (the latest count is 49.8 million worldwide, 18 million more than the first TV movie generated in its first month of release),  Disney still hasn’t decided whether to go ahead with a big-screen version of the popular franchise. In fact, the studio hasn’t even greenlit the script, which isn’t due until mid-October. If all goes well—and that includes signing all the stars—production could begin next spring with a possible (but not likely) bow in late 2008. In the meantime, parts of the world are only now experiencing the first movie. The original HSM just debuted Aug. 18 in China, and attracted 50 million viewers.

Grey's Heigl Scores Bigger Check

Izzy_l

Turns out Grey’s Anatomy‘s Katherine Heigl—who won an Emmy Sept. 16 for her portrayal as Izzie Stevens—quietly scored the raise she wanted over the summer, putting an end to a long (and very public) salary renegotiation with the popular ABC drama. Last season, all the actors on Grey‘s entered contract renegotiations—and were rewarded with raises as high as $125,000 per episode and some profit participation—but Heigl opted out when her reps and ABC Studios got into a war of the words. Heigl’s people said "the studio doesn’t value her as much as her costars" while the studio fired back by saying Heigl was offered  a substantial raise even though she wasn’t entitled to one because she (and her fellow costars) were still under the standard, multi-year contract. Eventually they found a way to make peace, though, and Heigl got her bigger payday.

Premiere week advantage: NBC (for now)

Here are the premiere-night ratings for new shows so far in the adults 18-49 demo. Some of the shows have already dropped in their second week. As one network exec says, “Back to You is one of them and has to be the most expensive 2.8 demo in television.” (Stars Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton earn between $150,000-$275,000.)

Bionic Woman (NBC) 5.7 rating

Private Practice (ABC) 5.2

Life (NBC) 4.0

Big Bang Theory (CBS) 3.7

Chuck (NBC) 3.6

Dirty Sexy Money (ABC) 3.6

Journeyman (NBC) 3.5

K-Ville (Fox) 3.3

Back to You (Fox) 3.1

Kid Nation (CBS) 3.1

Kitchen Nightmares (Fox) 3.1

Cane (CBS) 3.0

Nashville (Fox) 1.0

Nashville has already been bumped until October — a convenient way to avoid becoming the first cancellation of the season. But that’s not nearly as giggle-inducing as this hopelessly optimistic quote from another network executive: “3 (rating) is the new 4!” What’s next? Cancellation is the new pickup? Wait, we got that with Jericho.

Jason Reitman, meet Dwight Schrute

Tags:

Jason Reitman, director of last year’s Thank You For Smoking and this year’s sure-to-be critical darling Juno, is about to break into a group of elite filmmakers. The son of Ivan Reitman will join the ranks of J.J. Abrams, Harold Ramis, Miguel Arteta, and Joss Whedon when he takes a seat in the director’s chair of The Office. Reitman, who is friends with Rainn Wilson and John Krasinski, was given a script and a floor plan as part of his prep for the show. You see, since The Office‘s set is built to mimic a real workplace environment, Reitman will be forced to get really creative in maneuvering his two cameras to capture the episode (it’ll air later this season). The other challenge for directing this sitcom: There is no extra lighting. The only option is to remove a ceiling panel to let in more light. No worries though, Jason. If you’re up to directing Juno‘s Michael Cera in gold gym shorts you can handle anything.

Kid Nation: What Could Have Been

Tags:

Before CBS’ controversial new show Kid Nation debuted last week, executive producer Tom Forman used the “summer camp” comparison to describe how the show’s conceit was no different than parents sending their kids away to month-long sleepovers in the Adirondacks—only this time, cameras would capture their every move. It wasn’t the first time TV has tried to spy on kids during summer vacation: back in 1998, Disney Channel debuted a clever little reality show called Bug Juice, which sent camera crews into unsuspecting camp cabins and (you guessed it) chronicled their every move. But unlike Kid Nation, very little of the action, if any, was manipulated. The kids didn’t audition (camps were picked at random) and they ultimately set the tone for the show. (Bug Juice was canceled in 2002.)

Meanwhile, word has it that Forman pitched Nation as a show that would completely abdicate all power to the kids; it would be the tots—not the producers—who would decide things like who would be elected to the town council. Clearly, the network wasn’t willing to take a back seat to the kids, so it stepped in and made the rules—as evidenced by the “pioneer journal” the tykes read in each episode to get their instructions. Too bad; it would have been far more interesting to see the kids elect their own leaders and form their own cliques. Yes, I’ll say it: we would have preferred a small-screen version of Lord of the Flies.

Lastly, rumor has it the casting has been completed for a second season but production has yet to begun. And yes, sounds like they’re eyeing some place in Europe to film the next installment—assuming there will be one.

SoundScan Report: McEntire's 'Duets' takes top spot

Tags:

Reba_l Well, at least Kelly Clarkson is singing on one No. 1 album this year. Her remake of her previous pop hit “Because of You” with Reba McEntire has been burning up the country radio charts, and it helped McEntire’s Duets collection to debut at the top of the sales chart with 301,000 units moved last week. Additional celebrity couplings with everyone from Kenny Chesney to Justin Timberlake — and massive exposure on the Oprah and Larry King shows — didn’t hurt when it came to giving Reba her best opening week since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991. (You suppose that The WB is finally getting around to harboring regrets over canceling McEntire’s decently-rated sitcom? Nah, probably not.)

So now that Reba is firmly ruling the roost, which rapper will feel compelled to retire? Predictably, both Kanye West and 50 Cent took huge hits after their huge debuts last week. West’s Graduation slid 76 percent to end up with second-week sales of 226,000. 50′s Curtis was down 79 percent, to 143,000. Last week’s No. 3, Kenny Chesney’s Just Who I Am: Poets and Pirates, was off by close to that amount (71 percent) to sell 112,000.

The West/50 Cent/Chesney perfect storm of last week had pundits calling their Sept. 11 release date “Super Tuesday.” But Sept. 18 turned out to be sorta super-ish in its own way, just in terms of offering a plethora of new releases from mid-level stars (many of them trying to get their albums out in time to beat the end-of-September deadline for 2008 Grammy consideration). After Reba, the top bow belonged to Barry Manilow, who rode a QVC appearance and a View-related controversy to 113,000 in sales for The Greatest Songs of the Seventies, landing him at No. 3. Sounds good, but his last release, Greatest Songs of the Sixties, fared even better with a 202,000-copy entrance. James Blunt’s sophomore album, All the Lost Souls, was just beautiful enough with 92,000 at No. 7. Right behind Blunt was a nearly unbroken string of chart newcomers. Chamillionaire debuted at No. 8 with 79,000 — a big comedown from his last album’s 130K first week; KT Tunstall’s second effort sold 50,000 to land at No. 9; Twista was in at No. 10 with 41K, way, way down from his previous 129K opening; Eddie Vedder’s Into the Wild song score came in at No. 11 with 39,000 — not bad for the soundtrack to a movie that hasn’t yet opened in more than a half-dozen theaters.

Also making a debut in the top 30: H.I.M. at No. 12; Motion City Soundtrack at No. 16; Diana Krall’s best-of at No. 19; Dropkick Murphys at No. 20; Gloria Estefan at No. 25; and Mark Knopfler at No. 26.

Commandeering the charts next week, with little competition, will be Rascal Flatts, whose Sept. 25 release is expected to sell over a half-million by this time next week, but probably not get into the 700K-plus territory that their last album did. Meanwhile, Keyshia Cole is said to be a lock for No. 2 while first-day reports from retailers about the solo debut from Black Eyed Peas leader will.i.am suggest that he’s delivered a will.i.dud.

Ratings down? Maybe folks caught it on TiVo

Tags:

Eager to demonstrate how it’s a brave new world out there (or to provide legitimate excuses for why their ratings are down), the broadcast nets have begun to include DVR viewership levels in their daily and weekly ratings releases. CBS is even announcing estimates on DVR playback; for instance, the network is projecting that delayed, DVR viewership of the new Big Bang Theory could boost the show’s 18-49 rating by 10 percent and its 18-34 by 14 percent. (Ooo-kay. And they figured that out … how?) Insiders admit that this isn’t an exact science, but it’s certainly worth guesstimating since DVR penetration in Nielsen homes has jumped from 8.54 percent last year to 19.43 percent this year.

Advantage: 'Heroes'?

Tags:

Broadcast TV suits were in a tizzy Tuesday over how NBC is taking advantage of a new Nielsen rule that allows the Peacock to report a single rating for two airings of the new Heroes episode this week. As long as NBC repeats the show with the same content and commercials (not so difficult, since the drama had only one sponsor, Nissan, on Sept. 24), NBC can average the audience from debut night (6.5/15 in 18-49, 14.1 million viewers) with whatever unduplicated viewers it attracts during the Saturday repeat, and then release that final number next Tuesday. A bigger average could mean bigger ad dollars! NBC specifically requested the number from Nielsen, which (of course) charges for the service.

What really has the competition worked up, however, is how Nielsen will only report NBC’s premiere-week average based on 21 hours of programming. In other words, that hour-long repeat of Heroes won’t be included. (Averages for ABC and CBS, meanwhile, will be based on 22 hours of programming, and for Fox, on 15.) By omitting that Heroes repeat, NBC’s average could look better and ultimately improve its ranking during the most important week of the Nielsen season. Still, any resourceful journalist could take the time to figure out NBC’s weekly average by including the repeat — and trust us, we plan to.

Cisco Adler: ''Whitestarr Has Left its Mark on the Fabric of Rock 'N' Roll''

Tags:

Less than a week after we first told you that Whitestarr is calling it quits, singer Cisco Adler has sent a lengthy e-mail out to fans. He writes, “After 7 of the craziest, most wonderful years of my life, 3 albums (1 never released), a thousand shows, and a reality t.v.show, I have decided to take a vacation from Whitestarr. We are all still best friends and almost-lovers and we dont want anybody to think that any turmoil inside the band lead to this…I just feel it is time for a break….”

Check out his full (and woefully unedited) message, after the jump …

After 7 of the craziest, most wonderful years of my life, 3 albums (1 never released), a thousand shows, and a reality t.v.show, I have decided to take a vacation from Whitestarr. We are all still best friends and almost-lovers and we dont want anybody to think that any turmoil inside the band lead to this…I just feel it is time for a break. I feel like Whitestarr has left it’s mark on the fabric of rock n’ roll whether people like it or not and I don’t want people to panic…WHITESTARR will be back. I do however feel that over the years everything surrounding this band has sadly overshadowed the music I poured my heart and soul into. The party was good…but the music was better. Not the other way around. And if you don’t think so you weren’t listening. I was never in this to be a rock star…I am a musician and I was born to create and record and play. Thats what I do. Thats what i will still do.

I have been through many, many line ups with this band and I would like to say thanks to all of you who ever played even a tambourine with us…you are all priceless. I would also like to say thanks to all of the die hard fans out there who didnt give a f— about anything but the music and stuck with us through thick and thin. WHITESTARR will be back!!!! But as a songwriter and a producer I have always been all over the board taking influences from anything and everything that sparks my interest. I have been producing and writing music for 10 years now and as many of you know if I’m not working or playing with the starr I’m in the studio with a ton of different artists. Heres what I got going on…

I am about to start work on MICKEY AVALON’s second record and weve already cut a few tracks recently that look like lead off singles. They just shot the video for the second single off the first album, a track I produced and co-wrote with my boy called “Mr. Right.” It’s gonna be sick!!
check it out at myspace.com/mickeyavalonmusic

I am also finishing up work on the “SHWAYZE” record. It is a record I am truly proud of and I think it’s gonna be the soundtrack to a lot of peoples lives. It comes out in the spring of 08!

And SHWAYZE and I will be taking the PEPPER dates that I was going to do with WHITESTARR. Please come out and support this new adventure.
check it out at myspace.com/shwayze

AND go pick up DIRT NASTY and ANDRE LEGACY’s albums because they are hip-hop classics. I got a few cuts on each of em!

And…in between and on the run I will be writing and recording songs for a new album of my own! It will be a little of everything I do musically and should be ready by summer next year and will be on SURETONE RECORDS. Check out my demos at myspace.com/ciscosam

I LOVE YOU ALL MADLY,
THIS IS NOT THE END BUT A NEW BEGINING!!!’
Cisco

Please dont forget to visit Rainbow(& Beardo), Orbi, Tony Potato and Damone on their pages and please dont let the dream die just because were on vacation. The world needs WHITESTARR…it just doesnt
know it yet…well be back!! GO GET FILLITH TILLITH…it is a rock n roll wet dream!!! On to the nest stage of our lives…the good thing about music is it lives on forever!

…and as for THE ROCK LIFE, that was a strange and wonderful experience. Dont you EVER, EVER look at me again. But dont think that all we do is fight…that just makes good t.v. We laugh and love just as hard.

The Party That Keeps Giving

Tags:

The TV industry is still buzzing about the pre-Emmy party thrown by NBC honcho Ben Silverman on Sept. 14 that shuttled attendees from one site to another to maintain its hush-hush exclusivity. But that’s not what made Bachelor Ben’s press-free soiree so memorable, said one observer: “It was 40 percent male and 60 percent leggy, hot females. Vintage Silverman.”

Mariah's return

Mariah Carey will be back with a new album this December and a tour to follow, Island Def Jam head LA Reid told reporters at last night’s VH1 Save the Music event in New York City. So what can we expect? “It’s probably the most fun record that I’ve ever had,” said Carey. “And that’s tough to say after the Emancipation of Mimi, but it really is.”

Canada’s reigning indie rockers Arcade Fire kicked off their co-headlining US tour (with LCD Soundsystem) last night at the Hollywood Bowl. Spotted in the audience: Scarlett Johansson, Charlize Theron, KT Tunstall, and Drew Barrymore (who also caught the band at the Austin City Limits music festival last week with rumored beau Justin Long).

Is Loverboy Providing Music?

Tags:

First a Green Week in November, and now this? One insider on an NBC show says the the network is now talking about doing an ’80s theme night in during February sweeps. That means all the shows on a specific night (probably Thursday) will have to adopt some sort of ’80s motif. Leg warmers on Alec Baldwin! We… don’t like it.
