Next up for J.J. Abrams: New TV series 'Fringe'

Having scored a box office bull’s-eye with Cloverfield, producer J.J.Abrams (pictured) is now turning his attention to Fringe, his two-hour pilot for Fox that focuses on a trio of investigators who solve supernatural and sci-fi mysteries. Production on the project, which stars Mark Valley (Boston Legal) and Kirk Acevedo (The Black Donnellys), is expected to start as early as Feb. 1 and could cost Fox up to $10 million for the pilot alone. (Abrams told Hollywood Insider that he had cast a British actor on Wednesday for another key role, but refused to elaborate.) Fringe, which earned a series commitment from Fox, is slated for a fall bow, though the 2008–09 season could be disrupted by the writers’ strike. Says a source close to the project, “The best way to work with J.J. is to not put him in a position where he feels forced.”

    Agree 100% that sounds like a remake of the X-Files (BTW im just now starting to watch that show i bought the complete series), and CSI. . .um please JJ be more original. Cloverfield was like godzilla but way way better!!!
    LOST is AWESOME and different. . .

    You guys are talking like a remake or an update or a new take on the X-Files (especially via JJ Abrams) is a bad thing…
    Hope it doesn’t tank $10 million is a mighty big investment.

    Loved me some Xfiles (the first 5 seasons anyway) and while JJ drives me over the deep end at times by not explaining everything to my satisfaction I gotta say I’m looking forward to to this one.

    J.J. Abrams must have been a big fan of Oz because I notice that he keeps casting former cast members in his shows.
    I agree that an update of X-Files isn’t necessarily a bad thing if it’s done well. I miss that show.

    TV is bad enough without comparing each new show to all those who have past before it. Let’s just enjoy it while its here. As the lifespan on a paranormal show is short to begin with, why waste time comparing?

    Blaire said it best. And everyone in the biz knows it’s related to X-Files… Regardless, it should be a good show. They recycle ideas all of the time no matter tv, film, or literature.

    Nothing brilliant about this show. They are already stealing X Files ideas. This is like Alice in Chains getting back together with a new singer.
