Sinbad comments on America's issues with race

Tags:

To some people, Hollywood may be a “different world” — nudge, nudge — than it was when Sinbad’s 1987 TV show about a group of students trying to make it at a historically Black college hit the air. But the actor-comedian, who played Coach Walter Oakes on the sitcom, has publicly taken issue with Fred Armisen dressing up as Barack Obama on Saturday Night Live recently and also feels that the controversey surrounding Obama’s pastor has raised some important issues as well.

“If you have not lived as a minority you don’t have to pay attention to a lot of things in America. And then when it’s brought up…they get mad, they don’t want you to bring it up, they get angry,” Sinbad told EW.com. “I mean sometimes, even as minorities, you don’t want to say it. But you know what, you gotta say it, you can’t let it go and people get all bent out of shape. That’s why I’m glad the whole thing came up with Barack; I’m glad everything came up the pastor. Everybody’s freaked out like… this man was anti-American. How can he be anti-American? He’s a marine. He’s saying what he felt about America at a given time.”

As for the blackface SNL skit, Sinbad sees the whole thing pretty simply. “It’s just Hollywood,” he said. “Hollywood could care less. Hollywood is about bank, it’s not about finding a black entertainer. As long as it’s bringing money to the box office. It’s cut and dry. It is what it is.”

    Sinbad!!!

What hole did Sinbad crawl out of? Why I am reading soundbites from him about ‘anything’ all of a sudden!?

I love Sinbad’s comedy. He’s one of the few comedians who care to do a clean show the whole family can get into. Props for that. Now this. Blacks are not the only minority in America so who’s he talking about? White males? White males aren’t the only ones who take objection to the statements of Rev Wright. There are ppl all across America who are anti-American in their speech and actions & they come from all walks of life and yes have even served in the military. It’s called an isolationist, socialist viewpoint. If Rev Wright would spend his time on uplifting and empowering his parishioners instead of blaming the government and white males for their problems then ppl wouldn’t get so upset & btw what things are we not paying attention to? The government giving blacks HIV to kill them off?? Life’s tough no matter where you come from or what color you are & we are NOT living in the past so pull yourself out of it. We are the true masters of our own destinies, every of us. Stop blaming others

and I am not a white male

Remember that movie he made where he was the bodyguard to the President’s son? I used to love that movie. WTF was it called, again?

Will…I believe it was “First Kid”…and I’m kinda sad that I know that…I was always partial to “Houseguest” with Phil Hartman myself.

…also, i watch “Necessary Roughness” when it’s on one of the Cinemaxes for at least 20 minutes every time.

I’m sick and tired of African Americans talking about how “bad” things have been for them – particularly comments by Rev Wright and Sinbad. It’s not like that anymore!!! Blacks can vote, blacks can drive, blacks can go to school where they want, blacks can dine where they want – what is the problem exactly?? Regardless of your race, if you are living in poverty, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!
    Get a job.
    Quit having babies.
Quit doing drugs or drinking or smoking or gambling or whatever else you blow your money on.
Be responsible for your OWN actions instead of blaming the world for how bad things USED to be!

if you’re in the mood for a good laugh, I found a pretty funny impersonation of Sinbad:

I am not sure that Sinbad has a we are in the year 2000 point here about a blackface SNL skit. When the Wayne Brothers did the movie “White Chicks” or Ediie Murphy did a black fat getto chick in Norbit. Where was Sinbad then. Really what is the big deal, its just entertainment and I am a black guy. on a different note, please put more black tv shows and movies on my favorite tv show and popular video clips sites; http://www.hulu.com, http://www.zoogatv.com and http://www.tidaltv.com.
