this is old news. doxology released this same “press release” right after david did “eleanor rigby”. i guess it didn’t get enough attention that week, so they decided to re-release it on the heels of the chris cornell flap. shameless.
this whole debate is absurd. 97% of the performances on Idol are arrangements done by someone other than the contestant, whether it’s by the original artist or someone else. what exactly is david cook supposed to do, bring out a flashing sign with the arranger’s name on it? he’s not calling himself original; he can’t help what the judges say. enough already with this nonsense. regardless of the arrangement, david’s **performance** of the song was brilliant, and that’s what this show is supposed to be about.
David Cook is going to sue them for the amount of money he could have made in an entire career if he doesn’t win Idol now. These guys are idiots.
Blake Lewis (good friend of the band) posted last week on rickey.org that David Cook DID credit Doxology — but it got cut on the editing room floor.
David Cook Rocks and if anyone doubts that he couldn’t come up with these types of arrangements on his own given the time… Jut wait and see. David Cook will be around a lot longer than Blake Lewis, Doxology, and the like.
And what’s up with the hair and the “just got off the island” look.
Clean up your “act” Cook.
After all the seasons of AI you would think that this kind of problem has been taken care of not to cause a problem for a contestant
I blame AI for this mix-up. If David did give credit to Doxology and it was cut out, I can’t fault him. AI needs to be upfront with these things. I can understand Doxology coming out and asking for recognition. They’re just like any other band, working hard and looking for their big break. An on air shout-out could have really helped them. So for AI to think they could get away with it because Doxology is pretty much an unknown band, is really shady. They credited Whitesnake and Chris Cornell, why not Doxology? That being said, David needs to stop doing covers of covers! It’s time for him to come up with his own arrangements or sing a song straight through. He’s starting to become very predictable and repetitive.
I’ve seen Doxology in concert. That’s 2 hours I’ll never get back. They performed “Elenor Rigby” at the concert and it was a snoozer. DCook’s version is 100x better and he’s got 100x times more talent in his pinky finger than both Doxology and their lame pal Blake Lewis. Lewis is just trying to stir up sh*t cause he’s such a flop…and Doxology is never-gonna-be’s. LAME LOSERS.
You know, everyone is saying that Chris Cornell WAS acknowledged on IDOL, but the SECOND NIGHT. I think it was pure damage control and nothing more!
Old news. Bleh…
The interesting thing is that even a rudimentary google search will show that it is not possible to copyright an arrangement of a song, because the copyright exists with the original owner. I think all the fuss is just a cheap way for some fringe artists to create publicity for themselves. The American public vote on a performance for its quality and dramatic effect, not because it was arranged a certain way,
who cares, they both sux
This is getting stupid. Chris Daughtry did the same thing when he was on Idol and nobody gave him grief fr it. Anyone remember when he did Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire? It was totally the same version of the band Live’s. Yet no one had a problem then, so why is there a problem now?
Cera, go to youtube and watch Ryan Seacrest mention Chris Cornell’s name. He was acknowledged as the arranger on BOTH nights, the performance night and results night. *groan*
1. Ryan acknowledged Chris Cornell during the intro to David’s song on the first night.
2. David said he was doing Whitesnake’s cover of Eleanor Rigby.
3. This seems to be much ado about nothing — isn’t EVERY song on American Idol a cover? Give me a break!
4. In the end, it doesn’t matter wo you are covering, whether it’s a geniune superstar like Whitney Houston or a band no one has ever heard of (..ah hem..Doxology?), the point is whether or not you sing it well. And David Cook has done that — don’t forget about his amazing performance of the Lionel Richie song “Hello”.
Hello was also NOT his own arrangement. CAn’t remember who that was ripped of, maybe someone else does. But again, I believe it is AI’s fault not David’s when the arranger is not given credit (and thereby doesn’t share in the profits of the performance).
