Mariah stays at No. 1, enjoys calm before the Madonna storm

Tagged: ,

The “2” in E=MC2 stands for the two weeks that Mariah Carey was guaranteed at the top with her new album. It earned a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard/Soundscan chart by selling 182,000 copies, down 61% from its opening sales. Carey’s album may come back to enjoy more weeks in the top position, but next week won’t be one of them, since Madonna’s debuting Hard Candy will be a lock for that slot when we next bring you the chart news.

The week’s most surprising debut was the No. 3 entry for Flight of the Conchords, releasing their first full-length disc after finding fame on HBO. It sold a not-so-wacky 52,000. That’s only the second time the Sub Pop label out of Seattle has had a debut in the top 10 (the first was last year, when the Shins bowed at No. 2). It’s the highest ranking comedy album since Steve Martin hit No. 2 in 1978.

Ashlee Simpson may be feeling more bitter than sweet about sales for her third album. Bittersweet debuted at No. 4 with sales of 47,000. In contrast, both of her previous albums entered on top, with her freshman effort selling 398,000 in 2004 and her second one opening with 220,000 the following year. Maybe Ashlee, like sister Jessica, will soon announce that she’s rediscovered her country roots and take up shop in Nashville.

Other debuts of note: Indie hip-hop duo Atmosphere entered the Billboard chart’s atmosphere at No. 5 with 36,000 copies sold of When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That S— Gold. (Their best chart position prior to this: No. 66.) Slick country balladeer Phil Vassar debuted at No. 10 with Prayer of a Common Man, equaling his highest position to date, on sales of 27,000. And Story of the Year came in at No. 18, selling 21,000 units.

On the digital songs front, Leona Lewis retook the top spot with “Bleeding Love,” thanks to a guest slot on American Idol. Sales for the download were up 30%, as she sold another 236,000 to add to the single’s 1.6 million total. Madonna’s “Four Minutes” fell back into the No. 2 slot. The highest entry among digital songs was Chris Brown’s “Forever,” in at No. 6 with first-week sales of 113,000.

Common critiques coverage of his former pastor -- the Rev. Jeremiah Wright

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

Commoncute_l
Hip-hop artist Common has made no secret of his support for Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential bid. The Grammy-winning rapper has shouted out the fellow Chicagoan on at least two songs, and he’s also a lifelong member of Trinity United Church of Christ, where Obama’s controversial former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, preached until his retirement this year. When EW.com stopped by a Manhattan studio today to hear Common’s latest album-in-progress, Invincible Summer (including an uplifting
song called “Changes,” which he describes as perfect background music
for an Obama victory speech), the Chi-Town MC shared his thoughts on the recent media firestorm surrounding Wright.

“Obviously, the media has an agenda,” Common said. “I don’t follow what the media says. I’m a thinker for myself. And I just encourage people to be objective: When you’re watching, use your inner eye and really try to watch the person and see what you think about them. Because you can never really capture a person in the media blitz.”

Common added that he feels Wright is more than the sum of his sound bites. “I may not agree with people that I love, but if we understand, that what’s important. I’ve been going to that church since I was eight years old. So what he’s doing is giving people an understanding of a man’s perspective that grew up in the era of racial prejudice and has since progressed. The only way we’re going to progress is not judging and not quickly becoming offended. Just because somebody believes in something different from you don’t make them against you.”

Kathy Griffin 'fired' from 'Hannah Montana'?

Tagged:

Comedian Kathy Griffin tells EW.com that her infamous declaration at last year’s Creative Arts Emmys — "Suck it, Jesus! This award is my god now!" killed her appearance on the hit Miley Cyrus Disney Channel series, Hannah Montana. "I was fired from Hannah Montana for my ‘suck it Jesus’ remark," Griffin says.  "Which I can tell you now that Miley Cyrus has been flashing her green bra and posing topless." Although it had never been reported that Griffin planned to appear on the squeaky-clean show, Griffin says it was in the works until her faux-outrageous acceptance speech. "I was basically told, ‘Disney doesn’t want you anywhere near the building,’" she says. (Disney says Griffin’s Emmy speech had no bearing on its decision. "With all casting decisions, a ‘pass’ or ‘accept’ is ultimately a creative decision," a Disney channel spokeswoman said via email. "The ‘pass’ on Kathy Griffin in a particular guest role had nothing to do with comedy routines or public comments.")

Griffin isn’t sure if she was to play a character or do a cameo as
herself. "I might have been the nosy neighbor," she speculates. "Or
maybe the hooker with a heart of gold." Approached about a year ago to
make an appearance on Montana, the
comedian agreed, but had never seen the show."And suddenly everyone was
telling me
how huge the show is with kids, so I was really excited," she says. The
timing didn’t come together for last season, so they
aimed for fall 2007 instead. But then there was that Emmy speech, which
was interpreted by some as a slam on Jesus, though Griffin’s intention was to send-up awards acceptance speeches.

Despite the negative consequences of her Emmy speech, Griffin is still getting kudos. On Saturday, Griffin’s Bravo series, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List,
won outstanding reality series from GLAAD, which honors positive
portrayals of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered people, at the
organization’s gala at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. Griffin was
surprised and very satisfied: "The gays love me for the same reason I
love them: Nothing offends them!"

Roger Waters' inflatable pig recovered in desert

Tagged:

So what became of the giant pig that floated off during Roger Waters’ climactic set at the Coachella Festival on Sunday? The pig that prompted a $10,000 reward for its return? It’s been found. Even now, though, some mysteries remain: Did the pig “escape,” as stated in the press release offering the reward money, or was it liberated? Who, exactly, wanted the porcine porker back? (And by the way, which one’s Pink? Sorry, we got off track there.)

First, the find. Susan Stoltz, a resident of La Quinta, one of the towns adjoining the festival grounds in the California desert, got up Monday morning and decided to take a jog. She put on—irony alert!—a Pink Floyd T-shirt. It’s not that she’s a fan; she bought it a couple of years ago for a 1970s theme party. In the driveway, she found a “huge pile of vinyl and latex,” which she and her husband stuffed into the trash.  Tuesday morning, she went out to her driveway and found another surprise—the front page of the local Desert Sun newspaper, with a story about the wayward pig and the $10,000 finder’s fee. (Waters, a  left-wing Brit, has used the floating pig as a symbol for
right-wing forces since he first started setting ‘em aloft during Pink
Floyd shows in the late ‘70s.) Suddenly, Stoltz realized what she had, and so did a neighbor, who’d found the other half of the pig. They e-mailed the address listed in the story: lostpig@coachella.com. “I told them it it was more like pulled pork now—it was pretty shredded—but they said they’d be right out to get it,” Stoltz says. Within hours, she was being besieged by local media: “A lot of people think it’s pretty funny that this capitalist pig landed in a country club in [the] Palm Springs [area].”

But who wanted the pig back, and how did it get away from the
wranglers who led it through the crowd, on ropes? Many people
believed that it accidentally drifted away, but Waters, it seems,
sometimes lets  the pigs drift up toward the dark side of the moon
after they’ve served their purpose at outdoor gigs. (At indoor arena
shows, his pigs fly around with motors, via remote control.) Wikipedia
has a very revealing page about “Inflatable pigs on Roger Waters’ tours” (not to be confused with the page on “Pink Floyd pigs,”
which goes into the contractual disputes Waters had with his former
bandmates over who got to inherit the original pig’s design attributes).
Apparently Waters mass-produces his floating props now, and each one is
individually spray-painted with topical graffiti prior to each
evening’s show. This one had a pro-Obama slogan painted on its
underbelly. Considering that Waters was also rumored to be behind a botched drop of Obama flyers at the festival,
which blew into the yards of neighboring communities instead of landing
on festival goers, is it possible the shredded pig was blown out of the
sky by a Clinton or McCain supporter with a rocket launcher? (Or maybe
a vacationing David Gilmour?)

Anyhow, if we’re to assume that Waters didn’t need this pig back any
more than any of his others, who did? Marcee Rondan, a publicist for
the festival, says that the concert promoter, Goldenvoice, put up the
reward money because the pig is "a part of Coachella lore." Waters’
nearly three-hour set, Rondan says, was the first two-parter in the
nine-year history of the event."Maybe they’ll find a way to utilize it
in the festival’s arts display" in the future, she says. (Or maybe Paul
Tollett, the cofounder of Coachella and head of Goldenvoice, who’s
reportedly a Floyd fan, will just fly it over his next cookout.)

If they can patch it together. Stoltz says she and her neighbor were
told by the retrieving forces that they thought the two pieces
represented "90 percent, if not all, of the pig." Part of her reward
included lifetime passes to Coachella, but, she admits, "I’m not really
part of that crowd." However, she was already planning on going this
weekend to Coachella’s sister festival, Stagecoach, which focuses on
country acts. Look for the woman in the Pink Floyd T-shirt.

Exclusive: Scott Weiland will serve jail time; will be free in time for Stone Temple Pilots tour

Tagged:

Weiland_l
Playing the part of a bad-boy rocker sometimes involves a little method acting. Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland was recently sentenced to 192 hours in jail for a November 2007 DUI in Los Angeles. EW has now learned exclusively that the singer will serve his sentence, which the judge ordered he do before May 28, and be out in time to commence the band’s 65-date reunion tour, which kicks off May 17 in Columbus, Ohio. Weiland’s lawyer confirmed this with EW via Weiland’s spokesperson. A statement from Weiland should be released soon, along with further details.

STP sold some 35 million records starting in the early 1990s and had 15 top-ten hits; Weiland, 40, recently left rock supergroup Velvet Revolver to rejoin his old band after a five-year break. They will spend the summer on the road before possibly returning to the studio this fall for their first album of original material since 2001. In addition, Weiland has a solo album due later this year. As the singer told EW earlier this month: "We still have a lot of music in us. I don’t want to wear out our welcome, but we’ll know when it’s time to go." To read a full feature story on Weiland and STP, check out the next issue of EW, hitting newsstands and EW.com on Friday, May 2. —Leah Greenblatt

Arrested Development
fans may want to keep an eye on the Beverly Hills, 90210 spinoff in the works at CW. Jessica Walter, who played the nutty, booze-soaked Lucille Bluth on the Emmy-winning Fox comedy, will play Tabitha, the grandmother, in the highly-anticipated drama from executive producer Rob Thomas. The spinoff is expected to revolve around the Mills family of Beverly Hills whose matriarch, Tabitha, is a 60-something has-been actress and alcoholic. Tabitha’s adult son, Harry, moves back to Beverly Hills to care for his mother. Joining him are his wife Celia (Lori Laughlin, Summerland), an Olympic athlete-turned-personal trainer, and their two 16-year-old children, Annie (Degrassi: The Next Generation‘s Shenae Grimes) and Dixon (who has yet to be cast).

Lori Loughlin, Shenae Grimes join '90210' spinoff

Lorilaughlin_l Lori Loughlin (Summerland, pictured) has been cast in the Rob Thomas-produced Beverly Hills, 90210 spinoff currently in development at the CW. She’ll play Celia Mills, mother to teenage Annie, who will be played by Shenae Grimes (Degrassi: The Next Generation) and Dixon, Annie’s yet-to-be-cast twin (a la the original series’ Brenda and Brandon Walsh). The actresses join a cast that also includes Dustin Milligan (The Messengers), who plays Ethan the popular guy, and Annalynne McCord (Nip/Tuck), who plays Naomi the rich, popular girl.

CBS/Paramount, which is producing the much-anticipated drama for the CW, is expected to shore up casting on the pilot soon. One insider says Hilary Duff was given a script to read, but any discussion about her joining the cast is premature.

Summer Glau on 'Sarah Connor': More action, please!

Tagged:

Now that Fox has picked up 13 more episodes of The Sarah Connor Chronicles, star Summer Glau has high hopes for the new season. “I hope they make sure to keep the action level high,” Glau told EW.com at the Young Hollywood Awards in Los Angeles on April 27. “I really enjoy it and I feel very comfortable jumping around and kicking butt. I don’t want to see it become — and I think the fans would agree — some sappy, depressing drama. I think we are safe, but I figured I’d put that out there.”

“I feel like our storylines were just starting to really come together when the strike happened, and it is going to be hard to get fans back [on board] and to attract new fans,” Glau continued. “We were really building toward something, and then Bam, we had to stop. At least we had an episode filmed that was meant to be a middle episode, but it worked as a finale. So we didn’t leave people hanging in a bad spot, but you lose momentum and a level of comfort and it will be like starting all over again.”

Glau’s co-star, Thomas Dekker (John Connor), who attended the ceremony to accept a Young Hollywood award, promises the show will come back in the fall “like a proper series” and will take six months to prepare. “We are going back to shoot in June,” he said. “It is a very complicated show with lots of effects and stunts, so it takes a while to do each episode. And, of course, we are hoping that once we do those 13 they will keep us on to finish out a whole season.”

As for his character, Dekker says that “John undergoes a lot of changes in the coming episodes and season. It was intentional. Anyone who was afraid that my John was a little too weak will be pleasantly surprised in the second season. It was always the plan that I would go through a transformation and become a bad ass. I have to prove I am not a wimp and it’s going to be fun. We wanted it to start small and then make audiences go, ‘Oh s—.’” — With reporting by Carrie Bell

Coachella backstage report

Celebrity turnout was a bit light at Coachella 2008, perhaps because of a weaker-than-usual lineup and the triple-digit heat, which made the backstage scene kind of tame. Still, we still had a smattering of B-list actors and scenesters trolling the grounds, along with a couple of rock star offspring and one notable parent. Read on for a day-by-day breakdown…

Day 1
Things started off slow on the chillest Coachella day, with temps falling just short of 100, but Scott Speedman, of Felicity fame, was ready to party early on. He was spotted in a near-fetal position during  Jens Lekman’s afternoon set at the Mojave tent, then stumbling back to the VIP area. Meanwhile, backstage, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, flanked on both sides by two female hangers-on, was trying to wrap his head around the venue’s strict no-alcohol-past-the-gate policy. Drinks were confined to artist trailers, which Tyler didn’t have since he wasn’t performing, but seeing the Black Lips walk through with cases of beer left him perplexed. No matter, a friendly security guard (again, female) took time to explain the rule and was rewarded with a big bear hug and kiss. "I’ll never wash my face!" she yelled afterwards. (Um, really?) Food was a challenge backstage as well, since most of the vendors were outside in the common area. Festival regular Elijah Wood was spotted on line for burgers (veggie and meat) while Tegan and Sara had to make special arrangements to enter the catering tent. Another sister act, The Breeders’ Kim and Kelley Deal, took their meals to go and ate while watching the Raconteurs’ set on the big stage. There, they joined practically every other Coachella musician hoping to get a side-stage glimpse at the rock supergroup.

Day 2
As is typical of Coachellas past, Saturday tends to be more crowded and star heavy, and with Prince headlining this year’s second day, that was certainly the case. Making an entrance early in the day, perhaps to survey the venue where he’d be making a big announcement on Sunday, was Sean Penn, strolling solo in the trailer area. Shia LaBeouf, on the other hand, surrounded by a gaggle of friends, was overheard singing the praises of Philadephia genre-benders Man Man, who played the sweltering Mojave tent at 2:30 in the afternoon. Among the other actors milling about were Melanie Griffith, with her son (and friends) in tow, and Roseanna Arquette, who was shooting for the official Coachella webcast. For a ’90s fix, Beverly Hills, 90210′s Ian Ziering made the rounds with Married With Children’s David Faustino, but perhaps the most popular (and frequent) sighting of the night was the one… the only… The Hoff, who couldn’t walk four feet without being asked to pose for a picture. On the Young Hollywood end of things, Danny Masterson and girlfriend Bijou Phillips, who had been making their presence known at off-site parties hosted by SPIN and radio station Indie 103.1, committed to a full-night of music, as did Jared Leto. Kelly Osbourne, palling around with Sienna Miller and Kimberly Stewart, spent much of her backstage time at the MGMT trailer where a sizable party began to form (though she made one on stage performance — joining Mark Ronson for the Smiths’ "Stop Me"). That party wasn’t quite as big as the one near Rilo Kiley’s area, however, which was raging most of the night. Paris Hilton was spotted coming into the VIP area through the exit during Prince’s set, but didn’t seem to stick around for long. She and bestie Nicole Richie were later seen (with boyfriends Joel and Benji Madden) at the T-Mobile after-party held in an airport hangar not far from the festival grounds.

Day 3
Walking around on Sunday morning, you’d think it was arts and crafts day at Coachella. Behind the main stage, several able-bodied crew guys got busy painting a giant pink pig, while an inflatable astronaut was being prepped nearby (all in anticipation of the night’s final bow: Roger Waters performing Dark Side of the Moon — in the desert, dude). Also on hand were members of Mexico’s Austin TV, who looked like a pack of Jawas. But Sunday afternoon was really all about the Brits. Duffy left for her set puffing on an extra-long cigarette while members of Swervedriver, playing together for the first time in 10 years, gawked at the UK chart sensation from their trailer next door. The guys were still raving about the previous night’s Portishead performance, but also looking forward to British brethren Spiritualized, who were scheduled to follow their set in the Mojave Tent. Meawnwhile, Elle McPherson was supposedly somewhere on the VIP grounds, but it seemed like most of the celebs had already trekked back to Hollywood, probably to avoid the traffic.

CBS' 'Moonlight': Good news for fans?

Tagged:

Dohring_l Though CBS hasn’t officially ordered a second season of Moonlight, the sexy vampire drama starring Alex O’Laughlin, co-star Jason Dohring (Josef Konstantin) told EW.com that Joel Silver, the show’s executive producer, hinted that a second-season pickup seems likely. “We just aired our first episode after the strike break and the ratings were really good, so things are looking up,” Dohring told EW.com at the April 26 premiere of Speed Racer, which Silver produced. “Joel just pulled me aside on the carpet and said things were looking up and not to book any jobs for after the hiatus. That’s gotta be good, when the producer tells you things are looking up on whether or not you’ll still have a job next season.”

In terms of upcoming episodes, Dohring says there’ll be a lot more vampire action. “There is going to be a problem, and to solve it all the vampire circles and families are going to have to come together,” he said. “We have a big meeting to address the problem. There are vampires from all different social stratas.”

And if Moonlight does, in fact, return for a second season, Dohring hopes the writers will make use of his character’s extremely advanced age. “Because he is a 400-year-old, they could draw from any of those time periods for stories,” Dohring suggested. “I would like to see some flashbacks to establish more about this guy. Mostly, I just want to wear some cool period costumes but I think it’d be cool to see some huge historical events from the last 400 years that may have been instigated or impacted by vampires, this vampire in particular.” – With reporting by Carrie Bell

Lemonheads' Evan Dando trashes NME Award

Tagged: ,

A bit of chaos — some of it comic — unfolded at last night’s NME Awards (held at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles), where few of the award winners were big on acceptance speeches. Members of MGMT, who were voted NME’s Breakthrough Artist, and Vampire Weekend, who took home Best New Indie/Alternative Band, barely mumbled a ‘thank you’ before taking their bronzed middle finger back to their tables. But one recipient was particularly unenthused. Lemonheads frontman and founder Evan Dando, who was given the Classic Album award for his band’s seminal 1992 record, It’s A Shame About Ray, walked offstage and literally chucked the weighty trophy in the garbage can, telling a minder, “I don’t want this.” Afterwards, he performed two songs from that album solo — the title track and “My Drug Buddy” — to an audience that included celebrity attendees Kelly Osbourne, Danny Masterson, and Bijou Phillips, but then disappeared for the rest of the night and never explained his actions.

Dando’s strange antics were just the tip of the iceberg, though. At one point, Osbourne spat at the show’s host, Aussie comedian Jim Jeffries, who responded with, “Wow, Kelly Osbourne spitting — that’s not what I read on the Internet” — which prompted attendee Sienna Miller to throw a drink at him.

But all hell broke loose once a reunited Jane’s Addiction took the stage to play four of their classics, including “Been Caught Stealing” and “Jane Says.” Singer Perry Farrell was clearly thrilled to be back and on his home turf. He told the crowd, “I do this in my underpants, but it’s not as much fun.”

Kanye West burns the midnight oil between tour dates

Tagged: ,

The managers of Sacramento recording studio The Hangar, where albums by many a freak-folker have been made (Devendra Banhart, Vetiver, and Bright Black Morning Light, among others), were surprised to get a call last week from Kanye West’s camp looking to book some time in the hippie- and skater-friendly space. The chart-topping rapper had just finished the second date of his Glow in the Dark tour at nearby ARCO Arena, but needed to work on a track for Young Jeezy’s upcoming album which, EW.com has learned, is scheduled for release in July. “We thought it was a joke at first,” says studio owner John Baccigaluppi, who’s also the publisher of respected indie recording magazine Tape Op. “It was certainly an unusual booking for us, but they seemed to dig the studio and all the skate ramps.” West hunkered down for two overnight sessions before heading south to San Jose, San Diego, and then Los Angeles, where his Nokia Theater performance drew several famous fans, including Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie, and Jamie Foxx.

Chart Watch: Mariah Carey back on top

Tagged: ,

You didn’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure that E=MC2, Mariah Carey’s latest, would debut atop the Billboard/Soundscan album chart. Her "lambs" turned out in force, snapping up 463,000 copies for the best first-week sales so far in 2008 and Carey’s own best weekly tally yet. Her previous disc, 2005′s The Emancipation of Mimi, something of a comeback after a series of disappointing efforts, bowed with 404,000 units sold. The previous best this year had been Jack Johnson’s Sleep Through the Static, which came out of the gate with 375,000 a couple of months ago.

The next-highest debut this week belonged to Lady Antebellum, a freshman country trio on Capitol Nashville, whose self-titled CD came in at No. 4 with sales of 43,000. This is the second week in a row that a relatively unknown country act has scored a surprisingly solid bow on the album chart, following James Otto’s impressive debut, Sunset Man, which drops to No. 12, moving 84,000 units in just two weeks. In fact, nine of the top 50 albums are by country acts, thanks partly to the effect of April 14′s CMT Awards.

Another benefactor of the recent CMT Awards was a non-country performer: the show’s cohost, Miley Cyrus. Her live album, Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: The Best Of Both Worlds Concert,
leaped from No. 31 to No. 3, with this week’s sales of 47,000
representing a 162 percent gain. But you can’t credit CMT exposure for
all of that: The main reason for the boost is that the CD (which
also comes with a bonus DVD) had been a Wal-Mart exclusive for a month
before finally going out to all retailers this sales period.

Other notable album chart debuts: Thrice, at No. 17, with The Alchemy Index, Vol. 3 & 4: Air & Earth (21,000 copies); Rush’s Snakes & Arrows: Live at No. 18 (21,00); Children Of Bodom at No. 22 with Blooddrunk (19,000); kid faves the Naked Brothers Band at No. 23 with I Don’t Want to Go to School (19,000); and, benefiting from the exposure of a free iTunes track, Tristan Prettyman at No. 27 with Hello (18,000).

On the digital songs chart, "Four Minutes," the Madonna/Justin
Timberlake hookup, moved up one notch and took over the top spot,
selling 201,000 singles this week for a total of 847,000. Mariah fans
and Madonna aficionados, notorious for going to war with one another
online, are curious how the two divas will fare in a head-to-head
matchup. Madonna’s album isn’t out until next Tuesday (April 29), but
her single has already outsold Mariah’s "Touch My Body," which holds at
No. 6 with a grand total of 627,000 sold. But this week, Carey’s "Bye
Bye" debuted on the songs chart at No. 11 with 60,000 sold, so Madge
should be prepared for a fight on that front.
