The pregnant man: Will the Oprah sensation soon deliver a TV movie, too?

Tags:

Thomasbeatie_l Faster than you can say “Moment of Truth movie,” word has surfaced that a telefilm could be in the works about “the pregnant man,” Thomas Beatie. EW.com has learned that some networks, including Lifetime and one of the broadcast networks, have been shopped a project about about the 34-year-old Oregon man who was born a girl and decided to become a man a decade ago by taking testosterone and undergoing surgery to remove his breasts, according to published reports. Now married, Beatie was artifically inseminated and is now carrying a “healthy” baby. Beatie and his wife, Nancy, appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show on April 3 and are featured in the current issue of People. So far, it’s not known whether any network has yet to purchase the rights. In fact, one network executive wasn’t quite sure how to react when she first got the pitch via her cell phone. Her reaction, according to a source: “What? Who’s pregnant?”

He’s only a man from the waist up — he kept all the female reproductive organs (except breasts). He also stopped taking testosterone 2 years ago so the hormones wouldn’t affect a baby. His wife can’t get pregnant, so he’s carrying their baby conceived via a sperm donor and a syringe.

How Jerry Springerish of Oprah! I said when I saw the ad for this show, “he” has got to be a “she,” a sex-change operation. Anyone who has ever taken a sex-ed class knows that a “person” has to have ovaries, fallopian tubes, and a uterus……well, at least a uterus for the egg to be implanted in. This was below Oprah’s usual standards.

I am all for people having the freedom to do whatever to their bodies. However, let’s call a spade a spade here. If he has female organs, he is a woman, not a man. The media will spin this to death and turn it into a freak show. Let’s all leave these two people alone to have their baby and move on with life. Aren’t there more important issues facing the world today than this??

Totally agree will last 3 posters. This person was born a woman. The ‘pregnant man’ claim is false and this is sensationalism at it’s best.
The straw that broke this camels back was when a guest commentator on CNN said ‘Maybe it will start I trend, I hope so’.
Man, people are so whacked these days!

  • Sheesh

Let’s me get this straight. A woman having a baby.
    WOW! This is groundbreaking news!

Has anyone thought about what all that testosterone might do to the child?
    This is just creepy.

UGH SO ANNOYING. It’s not a man. It’s just a manly looking woman.

Thomas is legally a man. If not, he would not have been allowed to marry a woman. If he had stayed a she, then the marriage would not have been legal. See, there’s a loophole in the stupid marriage laws. All you have to do is get a sex change. Someone explain to me why in these times your legal gender matters when you get married. I love how Thomas and his wife have embraced their love and turned gender roles around.

Ellie, ‘Someone explain to me why in these times’ people throw their common sense out the window.
    I pity that poor kid.

To each his own BUT why didn’t they just adopt?

  • Ellie

Tina, I don’t pity a child born into a home full of love, but I do feel for the child because of all the ugliness that she will encounter from outside her home. Children born from interracial marriages used to face horrible discrimination, but does that mean that they should never have been conceived? Somebody has to break down boundaries set by prejudice. I don’t believe that there will now be a bunch of pregnant men, but this event does make us reexamine what it means to be a man or woman.

ok. I can cluck like a chicken. This doesn’t mean I can lay an egg. This is a WOMAN. Basically…the bearded lady is having a baby. NOT a man!

  • Tim

This is a woman giving birth. This is the bearded lady. ONLY female humans can give birth. Men cannot give birth. She can live as a man, no problem. But at the end of the day, the laws of science have not changed here. If I suggest the earth is flat, that does not make it so. Same thing.

As stated above, Thomas stopped taking testosterone 2 years ago, so there should be no negative on the baby. Thomas is LEGALLY a man, but MEDICALLY a woman.
Regardless, I did see them on Oprah, and they do seem like a loving couple who will be good parents. The wife has two grown children that also appeared on Oprah who seemed to turn out OK. That side of the family seems to be handling everything well. But Thomas’ family — well, it’s more dysfunctional. Then again, what family ISN’T dysfunctional?
