Add a former American Idol top three finalist to the fast-growing list of Archie devotees. Season 5′s Elliott Yamin told EW.com at last night’s ASCAP Pop Music Awards that he’s rooting for young David Archuleta to take the crown this year. “It would be really cool to see a young kid like him win,” he said. “I really love his songs, and musically, he’s very talented. He plays the guitar, piano… it’s nice to see [Idol] bringing out the creative sides of those kids.” As for the other male contenders? “No one’s really impressed me this season,” Yamin maintains. “David Cook is okay, Michael Johns is alright, but it’s anybody’s game at this point.”
As for himself, though still mourning the recent loss of his mother, Yamin was in good spirits walking the red carpet at Hollywood’s Kodak theater, relishing his time out of the recording studio. The velvety-voiced singer is hard at work on his second album, which he hopes to have out by the fall, and has recruited Janet Jackson’s man Jermaine Dupri to lend a hand with production. “I’m looking forward to seeing what he adds,” Yamin says. Also on his wish list: D’Angelo. “I’ve always wanted to work with him, and I’ve said it in interviews lots of times. Still, we’ve never heard from him.”

Why does everyone talk about David Archuleta as if he is so young, by Idol standards? He’s 17–Jordin Sparks was 17 last year when she won. It just seems like an odd thing for so many people to be so, “wowed” over. David isn’t even the only Idol contestant to prove that he can sing with the emotion of a 40-year old when still a teenager–Paris Bennett is another great example of being old for her age.
I think he’s astonishing…and he has been the first idol since Fantasia who has inspired me to vote. What a voice and heart! As a fellow singer, I appreciate his natural talent and his ability to interpret a lyric. He’s not afraid to “buy in” and deliver. I think he’s amazing…and he’ll get multiple votes from me every week. Good luck,
David!
Maybe cause he looks and acts about 12 yrs old.
He looks refreshing – no tattoo, no funky and dirty looking hair, has an enigmatic smile, and a powerhouse of a voice.
David A’s whole “awe shucks” thing doesn’t ring true to me. I agree that he has a good voice, but I cannot see him coming out with anything I would want to buy.
Thrilled to hear Elliot Yamin is working on another album. His first one is the only Idol recording I’ve ever bought. (The second will definitely be Archuleta’s.)
David A. Snore. No thanks.
DAVID COOK’S PERFORMANCES OF “ELEANOR RIGBY, AND BILLIE JEAN WERE UNFORGETTABLE AND AWESOME. HIS ORIGINALITY ON THE SONGS HE SINGS MAKES HIM SHINE. MICHAEL JOHNS COMING IN A CLOSE SECOND IN MY OPINION.
I’ve come to terms with the fact that David Archuleta is going to win this show, because that’s exactly the purpose he was manufactured in the archu-D2 factory for. I don’t think he’ll have a very prolific or successful career after the show. People like Brooke White, David Cook, and Jason Castro, however, I think will do very well in a post-Idol world.
Elliott: I am sorry for the loss of your beloved mother. I hope that your grief eases in time. As for your support of David Archuleta, you as a balladeer would naturally gravitate toward another balladeer. That doesn’t mean that ALL of us do. I find David weak as a performer, flubs his lyrics, is wobbly voiced, off pitch at times, limp sounding and a one trick pony. He fails dismally on upbeat songs or those which require vocal elasticity. You, Elliott happen to be a good singer, but you too are a person who doesn’t do well on up tempo songs. I respect you for what you can do, but personally, I am a Josh Groban type fan and Josh can sing anything, anytime and anywhere. He has the “it” quality, that neither you nor David Archuleta have. This season my vote goes to David Cook or Carly Smithson, both who are stellar singers with amazing range. Bless you anyway Elliott, you are a kind and wonderful person.
I am just signing up to receive this newsletter. Janis
Elliot is right on the money. David A is extremely talented and he WILL sell lot’s of CD’s. Refreshing to see a 17 year old with no bad, nasty attitude, who actually has manners and class. A rarity in this day and age….UNFORTUNATELY!! .
Condolences to Elliot on the loss of your mother, Z’L’.
I agree completely with Aristides…no tattoos, no weird hair, nothing at all like that. He’s just himself singing his heart out. What a voice, what a heart! Amazing. He has been my #1 choice from Day 1 and I truly hope he wins. Pure talent, totally true and amazing talent. Good luck to him.
elliott is the MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
