Pop newcomer Katy Perry has a top 5 single with “I Kissed a Girl,” but how does singer-songwriter Jill Sobule, who had a 1995 hit of the same name, feel about its success? “I don’t feel precious about the title, but I’ve gotten tons of e-mails from annoyed fans," she tells EW.com. "Some think it’s more of a Girls Gone Wild thing than anything shocking or empowering to true gay feelings." Sobule’s song pre-dates The L Word and Ellen DeGeneres’ TV outing and caused a minor controversy when it was released. "Maybe I’ll write a third ‘I Kissed a Girl’ for fun," she cracks. "It will be about how I kissed her, Ieft the dull boyfriend, got gay-married in California, and really no one gave a s—” Still, Sobule does confess: "Katy Perry’s song is a kind of catchy party song, although I will admit that I do smile when a critique mentions my version in a more favorable light. Is that wrong?”
Sobule is currently in the studio with Don Was putting the finishing touches on her seventh full-length album, which she was able to finance via an unconventional fan-focused fund-raising campaign that generated over $75,000 in donations.
Perry’s debut, One of the Boys, will be released on June 17. A second track from the album, "UR So Gay," is also buzzing thanks to a key endorsement by Madonna on Ryan Seacrest’s KIIS-FM radio show last month. Madge called it "hilarious" and said it was her favorite song of the moment.
I’m so glad to see this post. I’ve known of Jill’s song for years, and I much prefer it to Katy’s song.

Jill was able to snag Fabio for her vid. Katy wasn’t so lucky. Her MySpace vid looks like it was REALLY made on the cheap.
It’s her first video, Is a #1 song.. Jill’s 7th album was created from fans cause she didn’t have the money for it. I think you need to realize that Jill is a nobody.. Katy is 10x better than Jill will ever be.

This is why I’m a Sobule fan – she’s got a wit and humor unheard of from just about anyone in the top 40. Catchy party song or not, Katy isn’t fit to tie Jill’s shoelaces.
Uhm, That’s definitely twisted.Jill has nothing on Katy. Jill is a has-been she needs to take her and her wrinkles somewhere else. Katy doesn’t want to fill Jill’s shoes. Cause she’s got bigger and better shoes she’s already filled and will continue to fill.
When you have wrinkles of your own you won’t be so quick to dismiss experienced people as “has-beens.” Katy Perry’s song is offensive because it’s all about getting attention from boys, not about truly liking girls. Check out the lyrics, Katy fan — she sounds ashamed of it, not proud.
Jill Sobule’s is the original. Listen to the original “I Kissed A Girl”. For my UK and Canuck friends it is the difference between double clotted cream and half and half you get in the States. She’s taken this copyright issue in a very classic, Jill way (love the sequel idea!) although most would have gone straight to an attorney. Can’t wait for her get her 7th cd!

It’s amazing how many younger people never knew about the first song. I thionk a lot of that is because many stations banned it at the time. Anyone who hasn’t heard Jill’s song should look it up, it’s actually much more up tempo, funnier and with more of a story.
I heard her song. It was like nails on a chalkboard. Jill trys to hard to be funny, She needs to retire and go into a nursing home.
