'Idol' winner David Cook pays homage to Dave Grohl on 'Tonight Show'

Davidcook052008_l
With the contest behind him, American Idol winner David Cook is now paying homage to one of his idols: Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl. On this evening’s Tonight Show With Jay Leno, after performing his single, “Time of My Life,” Cook will play a cover of the Foo Fighters hit “My Hero,” one of the band’s most beloved songs, which originally appeared on their second release, The Colour and the Shape (the album through which Cook taught himself to play guitar). The exclusive performance is part of the show’s Summer Concert Series and will be available online starting at 3:30 a.m.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Cook listed Grohl as one of several
rockers on his cowriting wish-list. “The thing I like about him is his music has some substance,”
Cook said. “He’s also kind of realized the absurdity of being a celebrity so he doesn’t take himself or any of the extra stuff too seriously. I can only hope to be like that.” Cook’s full-length debut is scheduled for a November release on RCA Records, the same label that distributes the Foos’ albums. No word on whether there’s been any official collaboration talks as of yet, but check back for updates.

This is awesomeness. Cook sang My Hero during his hometown visit during Idol and it was really beautiful. Yay for my two favorite Daves!

This is great. I hope David does get to write with Grohl, it will be fantastic. Here’s a video of David’s acoustic rendition of My Hero during his homecoming mini-concert:

Thank you for letting us know about the 2nd song! Can’t wait to see it. I did start to wonder whether all of these seemingly random Foo Fighters links would lead into a future collaboration, but I guess it’s too early to tell? It’ll be pretty sweet if something like that did happen.
Also – Yay for confirmation of the album coming out in November! Perfect.

Cool, can’t wait to see his performance! I hope D.C. gets some rest, his voice sounded tired when singing the National Anthem the other night!

Great news! Thank you for the update.

Two amaaaaaaaazing performances. And very reassuring to hear him rock these. Cook even covers himself! Sure keeps it fresh. And REALLY looking forward to his new stuff. November seems so far away right now!

He was really amazing tonight. Especially on “My Hero”. Great to see him relaxed and enjoying himself up on the stage.

Major Bummer, I missed him on Tonight show. Major Bummer. I LOVE DAVID COOK. I voted 908 times for him on DialIdol.com. I am so happy he won.
Does anyone have the link to his performance of the National Anthem? People.com had it posted, but the video wouldn’t load and I tried for 3 days now. Thanks Cookie Lovers!

Hello, I’m from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I’m a huge fan of American Idol. I don’t know if Idol Producers read this board, but I want to denounce that Sony Entertainment Television Channel, which is who airs AI in the whole Latin America, didn’t aired the finale of May, 21st. We watch AI Season 7 w/a little delay of 8 days. (That’s not the problem). They should have aired the season finale on May, 29th. But they didn’t. We are still waiting to know who won, and we never will. (I know b/c I read EW and watch youtube). But I want the Producers to know there are millions of Latin American fans of the show who have been defrauded. The channel didn’t make any explanation about the lack of season 7 finale and we are still waiting…
