Exclusive: Shane West's 'ER' Comeback a 'Double Surprise'

Shaneparminder_l
Dr. Ross? Pshaw. The ER return that most fans — or at least the most vocal fans — have been clamoring for is that of Dr. Barnett. And this fall, their prayers will be answered when Shane West’s Ray heads back to County General with a new lease on life and eyes for the woman that got away, his ex-roomie and unrequited love, Neela.

Let’s rewind first: When last we saw Ray, he was heading home to Baton Rouge to mend his broken heart and recover from a tragic car accident that left him a double amputee. As West points out, "He wasn’t in a very good head space."

Well, a lot can change in a year. When Ray returns in the Oct. 30 episode, he’ll have both feet firmly planted on the ground — literally and figuratively. "He’s walking on his own again," reveals executive producer Joe Sachs. As we’ll learn, Ray has endured months of rehab, during which he was fitted with new cutting edge prosthetics. "He in no way appears disabled. He’s been through hell and has come out a better, stronger guy. He’s matured. He knows what’s important in his life."

What or who? Although only back for a brief time — Ray’s in Chicago for a medical conference related to physical medicine/rehabilitation (his new specialty, natch) — Sachs hints that his presence has a huge impact on Neela. "His return affects her in a big way," he says. "It stir the embers of that relationship and makes her question, "Could I be with this guy now?"

Sachs isn’t providing an answer to that question, although he promises that "Reela" fans will be "satisfied by the story." Adds West: "He’s coming back at the right time, when she needs that friend and possibly that romance back. There are definitely sparks reignited."

So much so that the Oct. 30 episode won’t be the last we’ll see of Ray. West is on board for at least one more episode, to air shortly before ER signs off for good in May. "It’s going to be a double surprise," the actor teases. "One in the beginning of the season when he returns, and one at the end." Hmmm…. might that second surprise involve oh, I dunno, a ring?

Hey, speaking of surprises, here’s another one: Next week’s Ask Ausiello will feature more scoop on West’s highly-anticipated return. In the meantime, go ahead and celebrate your hard-fought and well-earned victory in the comments section, Reela fans.

'Amazing Race' honcho teases new season

With the season 13 debut of CBS’ The Amazing Race looming just around the corner (okay, Sept. 28), exec producer Bertram Van Munster slipped us a few clues about the upcoming globetrot.

• The race takes 23 days, covers nearly 40,000 miles, spans five continents, and features some far-flung locales never before seen on the show, including Angkor Wat, Cambodia and La Paz, Bolivia.

• The youngest team is a tandem of two guys in their early 20s. “They’re made for television,” Van Munster says. “They’re supersmart — and they make terrible mistakes.” A pair of recent divorcees in their late 20s also vie for the million-dollar prize. “They were left with some financial debt, so they really have a motive to run around the world,” he says. And once again, expect a serving of granola — this time with a husband-wife squad of 60-something Oregon hippies. “They’re the real thing,” says Van Munster. “They come right out of the ’60s. To a lot of people, it looks almost like they’re from a different planet.”

• As for the challenges, “We’ve really outdone ourselves in the department of outrageousness,”  Van Munster declares. “We have a situation in Bolivia where we have the [contestants] go down a cobblestone hill on very, very primitive bikes, and it’s just the most hilarious thing you’ve ever seen in your life. It’s a truly bone-jarring experience.” (Another must-see detour: A by-train-or-by-bus scavenger hunt in Moscow. )

• One familiar thing actually did happen on this race: The producers didn’t predict the winner. Says Van Munster, “We’ve been wrong every time, across the board.”

Exclusive: Peyton's 'One Tree Hill' Maybe-Daddy Unmasked!

Hilarieburton_l_2Remember the mystery man that Mia told Peyton (Hilarie Burton) she had met in the One Tree Hill season finale? You know, the guy who
knew Peyton’s biological mother back in the day? The dude we were led
to believe might be Peyton’s real pops? No? Me neither. But listen up
anyway, ’cause this is about to get very interesting. I think.

Actor-musician John Doe (Roswell, seminal L.A. punk band X) is joining the One Tree Hill cast this season as said mystery man, sources confirm to me
exclusively.

One of those sources, OTH executive producer Mark Schwahn, says
the identity of Doe’s character (who, ironically, is a John Doe himself at this point) will remain a mystery… for a little while at least. “Whether or not he’s [Peyton's] father will be the question,” Schwahn explains. “[But] we will find out one way or the other.”

See, told you it’d get interesting. It did, right? (Additional reporting by Lindsay Soll)

J.K. Rowling to release 'Deathly Hallows' wizard tales

Tags:

Brace yourself Potterphiles. The Tales of Beedle the Bard — the wizard-centric stories mentioned in J.K. Rowling‘s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — will soon make its way into the hands of fans worldwide less than a year after the author originally produced seven hand-written and illustrated copies (Amazon purchased one for $4 million at an auction). “There was understandable disappointment among Harry Potter fans when only one copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard
was offered to the public last December,” Rowling says. “I am therefore delighted to
announce that…The Tales of Beedle the Bard will now be widely available to all Harry Potter fans.”

Rowling will release the book — which includes “notes by Professor Albus Dumbledore, which appear by generous permission of the Hogwarts Headmasters’ Archive” — on Dec. 4 through Amazon, Scholastic, and Bloomsbury (Amazon will distribute up to 100,000 collector’s editions, while Scholastic and Bloomsbury will print trade editions). Another bonus? All net proceeds from the book will go to Rowling’s charity, Children’s High Level Group.

Miley and Sugarland pour some sugar on the album chart

Tags:

Hannahmontana_lWe recently learned that Miley Cyrus can sell magazines. The issue of Vanity Fair that featured her controversial photo shoot was that mag’s strongest seller so far this year. Now, it’s been reaffirmed that she can sell albums, too. The 15-year-old star’s Breakout bowed at No. 1 on the Nielsen SoundScan chart with an impressive 371,000 copies. That’s this year’s sixth biggest first-week tally. And it marks an improvement on the 326,000-copy opening for last year’s Hannah Montana 2/Meet Miley Cyrus, a hybrid package that was half TV soundtrack, half solo debut.

Also bettering their previous best were the country-rock duo Sugarland. Their third album, Love on the Inside, came in at a solid No. 2 with 314,000 sold, a big uptick from their previous top sales week, which had been 211,000. All 314K in sales were for a “deluxe edition” of the album, which includes five cuts not found on the standard edition. Yes, curiously, Sugarland released their deluxe package a week before the “regular” CD—apparently the first major act ever to pull such an odd maneuver. The lower-priced, budget-conscious edition came out just this Tuesday, and sales for both versions will be tabulated together on next week’s chart. (Click through to the jump for a report on the rest of this week’s chart activity, including the week’s No. 1 single!)

In third place, the Mamma Mia! soundtrack got a hefty
boost—as expected—upon the release of the movie; weekly sales were up
84 percent, to 168,000. (It’s also produced an unlikely hit single;
more on that below.) Kid Rock’s recently dormant Rock N Roll Jesus
continued its startling re-ascent, up another 26 percent to 93,000
units and up two spots to No. 4. Last week’s charttopper, Nas’ Untitled, took a 66 percent tumble and fell to No. 8. The top 10 sellers were rounded out by Lil Wayne, Coldplay, Camp Rock, NOW 28, and Taylor Swift’s newish Wal-Mart-only release.

Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” managed to dominate both the hot
digital songs chart and Billboard’s Hot 100 yet again; it sold 151,000
downloads this week, for a total to date of almost 1.9 million.
Rihanna’s “Disturbia” jumped five spots to No. 2 on the digital sales
chart, with 122,000 downloads. The Jonas Brothers’ “Burnin’ Up” moved
up a spot to third place, selling another 108,000 in advance of their
third album’s impending August release.

Meanwhile, look out for an up-and-coming pop star named Meryl
Streep. Her cover of ABBA’s “Mamma Mia” moved up to No. 48 on the
digital songs chart, with 27,000 downloads; Streep’s tune also debuted
on Billboard’s venerable Hot 100 at No. 99. Watch your back, Miley!

'The Hills': Whitney Port addresses spin-off rumors

Tags:

MTV’s hit The Hills returns for its fourth season Aug. 18 (check out the EW cover story), and it may very well be its last. But the good news for despondent fans is there might be a new project in the works for cast member Whitney Port, who, rumor has it, may be getting a spin-off set in The Big Apple. “At this point I’m just going to New York to film for The Hills,” Port tells EW.com. “There are rumors, and rumors that I’ve heard from people at MTV as well, but nothing is set in stone yet, and there is no foreseeable move date right now.”

Port adds that there could very well be another season of The HIlls coming up as well. “I was told that was going to be it and then there was talk of maybe another [season],” she says. “So I’m hearing different things from everyone, but at this point we’re all just wrapped up in the moment. I guess we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”

Port, who will continue working for People’s Revolution in the upcoming season, has typically steered clear of playing a big role in any of the drama on The Hills, preferring instead to primarily serve as a confidante for good pal Lauren Conrad. Can such a minor “character” anchor her own show? “I’m not one to shy away from cameras, clearly, since I’m on [The Hills], but it’s always been difficult to open up personally,” Port admits. “It’s definitely something I’m willing to do, but to the extent that I’ll reveal everything, I’ll do it at my own pace.”

Though it remains unclear when (and even if) the spin-off will actually happen, Port is hopeful that it will enable her to make a positive impact as a star. “The thought of it is definitely scary. I think I’d be crazy if I said it wasn’t,” she says. “But it’s something I think I can use as a vehicle to just almost hopefully be some sort of role model. And that’s not to say that I am, but I try to look at it more that way than that I’m just going to be part of another reality show.”

New Oasis record gets release date

After more than a decade with Sony Music, Brit-pop phenoms Oasis have found a new home, at Burbank’s Warner Bros. Records. Today, Warner Bros. will announce a North American distribution deal with Big Brother Recordings, the Noel and Liam Gallagher-owned label, and the Oct. 7 release date of Dig Out Your Soul, the band’s seventh studio album. The first single, “The Shock of Lightning,” written by Noel, will hit radio in mid-August.

Earlier this summer, word had spread around Los Angeles that the Gallagher brothers were in town mixing the album, which was recorded at Abbey Road studios in London. The guys, seen at various psych-rock shows around town, were said to have almost 40 songs completed. Since then, that number has been truncated, but the record still features songwriting contributions by all four band members. Says Diarmuid Quinn, Warner Bros. Records COO, “The new music kicks ass!”

'Strangers With Candy' creators reunite for Nickelodeon movie

Tags:

The minds behind the subversive 1999–2000 cult TV favorite Strangers With Candy are reuniting this fall on… Nickelodeon?! Amy Sedaris will play a screwy principal who gets moony-eyed over a competitive gymnast–turned–PE teacher (Christopher Meloni) in Gym Teacher: The Movie, airing Sept. 12. Strangers co-creator Paul Dinello not only directed the comedy but specifically requested that his longtime collaborator “pack up her wig” and join the movie, which features Meloni as a redemption-seeking athlete who’s up for Gym Teacher of the Year. “I just point her in a direction, wind her up, and magic happens,” says Dinello. “He knows my bag of tricks,” adds Sedaris, who actually did bring along her own “squirrel-colored” wig to play principal Abby Hoffman. And that’s not all: Nickelodeon has already enlisted Dinello to write a movie that will star Sedaris and Chris Kattan (who has a cameo in Gym Teacher) as cringe-inducing parents. Production is set to begin this fall.

Spacehog's Royston Langdon in the running for Velvet Revolver frontman

While Scott Weiland treks cross-country on the Stone Temple Pilots reunion tour, his other former band, Velvet Revolver, is hard at work finding a new singer. EW.com has learned that Royston Langdon —frontman for Spacehog (who had a 1995 hit with “In the Meantime” ) and estranged husband of Liv Tyler — is in the running for the gig after several successful jam sessions in Los Angeles. “They all got along great,” says an insider. “It was really a refreshing change for the band.” Velvet Revolver’s management couldn’t confirm that an offer had been made, and would only say that they’re still auditioning prospective singers. But an RCA source says that Langdon is “definitely in the mix.”

Kanye West: Can HBO make him a TV star?

Tags:

Kanyewest_lHBO remains hell-bent on finding a way to showcase the talents of Kanye West. Long before the writers’ strike began last November, the network began discussing whether to team the rapper with executive producer Larry Charles (Curb Your Enthusiasm) for a yet-to-be-named, single-camera series that would follow the busy life of the Grammy-winning artist and his relationship with family and friends. One key insider says HBO is now looking for a writer — and some creative inspiration — before moving forward with the project: “We need to figure out how to capture Kanye in the right way.” Anything that allows him to gas on about his many talents should do the trick.

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'SVU,' 'Gossip Girl,' '90210,' 'Heroes,' 'Lost' and More!

Tags:

Ausiellofiles_l1Question: What’s cookin’ on the 90210 front? — Sheri
Ausiello:
Tension between Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth, that’s what’s cooking! OK, it’s faux tension, but, hey, I’ll take what I can get. Word on the street (i.e. Rodeo Drive) is that Brenda and Kelly will find themselves once again crushing on the same guy — in this case, Mr. Matthews (aka Ryan Eggold). Let the games begin!

Question: Law & Order: SVU scoop please? — Samantha
Ausiello:
I think what you meant to ask was, "Is this the season Benson and Stabler will finally go there?" Because that’s the question I posed to executive producer Neal Baer yesterday, and behold his titillating answer. "In the first eight episodes, circumstances put them in a very interesting place," he hinted. Where might this, um, place be located? "Somewhere without clothes." OMG, they’re shooting a scene in Annie Barrett’s cubicle?!

Question: Do you have anything new on my favorite show, Chuck? — Laura
Ausiello:
Yes, but let me preface this by saying some of this may have already been reported at that big fat spoiler confab known as Comic-Con. In the Sept. 29 season premiere, Chuck and Sarah finally set a date… to go on a date — a real date. Not surprisingly, things don’t go smoothly. Actually, things don’t go at all, thanks to one Mr. Adam Baldwin. Looking beyond the premiere, I hear John Larroquette gives his funniest performance since his Night Court days when he guests as a retired 007 in October. As an added bonus, his episode also features the inimitable Melinda Clarke sporting her most over-the-top accessory yet: a thick Russian accent. Sometimes Josh Schwartz gives me gifts. And sometimes I pay it forward. Case in point: Look what I just found.

Question: Were you one of the lucky few thousand who saw the Heroes premiere at Comic-Con? — Erik
Ausiello:
I actually skipped out on Comic-Con this year due to, um,
er… security reasons. Yeah, that’s it. Luckily, my trusty moles were
out in full force. One of them even attended the packed Heroes
screening, and he/she reports that the Season 3 premiere is "excellent
and far less confusing than last season." My spywitness adds that the
episode has several funny moments and "a really scary scene reminiscent
of the Scream movies."

Question: Seems like forever since you scooped Gossip Girl. — Candy
Ausiello:
That’s a coincidence, ’cause it seems like forever since you asked about Gossip Girl. Contrary to popular opinion, Ask Ausiello is not a single lane, ego-driven road to nowhere; it’s a two-way street. Always remember that. Now, about Gossip: Your eyes were not deceiving you. That new Season 2 promo does, in fact, show Nate and Serena sucking some serious face in the Hamptons. And I assure you it’s not a fantasy sequence.

Question: Does the Gossip Boy have any more Gossip Girl spoilers? — Claire
Ausiello:
This fall, the show will embark on its darkest plot to date. For more on that, head to your local newsstand this Friday, pick up the new issue of EW and turn to my column on page 55. And when you’re done reading that, be sure to check out Tim Stack’s riveting cover story on The Hills. Yes, I used the words "riveting" and "The Hills" in the same sentence without a trace of sarcasm or irony. Get over it.

Question: Thanks for the awesome interview with Katie Jacobs from House! Surely, you saved a few sound bites for AA, right? — Jonathan
Ausiello:
You guys know all my tricks. Yes, I banked a few juicy bits, beginning with scoop on Thirteen. For the foreseeable future, Olivia Wilde’s alter ego will continue to go by Thirteen or Dr. Hadley — although in the wake of her Huntington’s diagnosis, you can probably add Evel Knievel to that list, too. "She’s always been something of a risk taker," Jacobs explains. "And now that she knows she has this fatal illness, it causes her to make certain choices that may not be considered all that responsible. She’s on an interesting journey."

Question: Please with Snapple on top tell me that the CSI: NY writers aren’t going to knock up Rikki. — Carolyn
Ausiello:
I may end up eating my words here, but I’m fairly certain she won’t be with child when she returns this fall.

Question: Do you have any CSI: NY scoop pertaining to Mac and Stella? — Lori
Ausiello:
They’re both getting new love interests this season. And for once, Stella’s squeeze won’t turn out to be a psycho/loser! "He won’t be a bad guy," laughs exec producer Pam Veasey. "This will be a real relationship for her."

Question: Can you give me a Grey’s scoop? — Bryan
Ausiello:
Would you settle for a Private Practice one instead? No? Well, too bad, ’cause that’s all I got. Shonda Rhimes is looking for a "star name" to play a charming new doctor in his 30s.

Question: Got anything new on Old Christine? — Rachel
Ausiello:
Look for Matthew to break the cardinal rule of psychotherapy: He’s going to make googly eyes at one of his patients. Christine producers are casting the recurring role of Lucy, a twentysomething grad student who becomes one of Matt’s first clients. And then some.

Question: Is Lyla’s father still a part of Friday Night Lights? — Janet
Ausiello:
Yep, Buddy’s back, and, as you might expect, he’s none too pleased that Lyla and Tim are officially boyfriend and girlfriend.

Question: I heard we’re going to meet Matt’s mother on Friday Night Lights. Do you know anything else about that? — Claire
Ausiello:
I know she’s a lot closer to Matt than we were led to believe, at least geographically speaking. Turns out she works as a hairdresser in a nearby town.

Question: I can’t believe FNL is splitting Tyra and Landry up! — Lauren
Ausiello:
If it’s any comfort, Jesse Plemons told me at press tour that he doesn’t think the breakup will hold. "If I know the writers, they’ll end up together at some point," he said. "I think they’re just adding some drama… This is Friday Night Lights." Guy’s got a point.

Question: QVC.com is selling a 50th Anniversary Special Edition Plush Smurf w/DVD (item # T27401) if you’re interested. — KM Harmon
Ausiello:
Not really, but thanks for passing the info along. Truth be told, what I’m really interested in is a special delivery from FedEx later this week that includes a 50th Anniversary Special Edition Plush Smurf w/DVD (item # T27401) and a return address that starts with, "KM Harmon." See where I’m going with this?

Question: Just a question about the "genetic quirk" Grissom’s replacement will have on CSI. By any possible chance will he have two different DNAs? — Ashley
Ausiello:
Not exactly. More like a chromosome abnormality. (Think: One too many letters.)

Question: I didn’t attend Comic-Con and I’m too lazy to scour the web looking for a transcript of the Lost panel, so whaddaya say you save me the trouble and give me a quick rundown of the major Lost spoilers that Team Darlton revealed? — Nicole
Ausiello:
Unfortunately, I’m even lazier than you, so I wouldn’t touch that assignment with a 10-foot pole. I would, however, email EW’s Doc Jensen and kindly ask him to do it for both of us. (He was sitting in the front row, after all.) Below are what he considers to be the major takeaways, bullet-pointed for your convenience.

•    Richard Alpert will figure prominently in Season 5.
•    The whole notion of "flashbacks" and "flash-forwards" will be reinvented, suggesting that upcoming episodes will span multiple time periods and perspectives.
•    Jin will be back, but there’s no word if he’s dead or alive.
•    It was strongly suggested that Faraday survived.
•    Faraday’s notebook will play a prominent role this season.
•    We’ll finally get Rousseau’s back-story, but Darlton cautioned that it would be wrong to call it a "flashback" episode.

Question: I’m dying for something, anything, on Grey’s Anatomy. — Lauren
Ausiello:
Well, would you look at this — I found something! I’m hearing that Lexie Grey, a big ball of confusion following her impromptu smooch with George, reaches out to the unlikeliest of colleagues for advice: That raging whorebag known as McSteamy!

Question: Debra Mooney as Chi McBride’s mother on Pushing Daisies (Ausiello Files 7/25)? I’m SO there. — Greg
Ausiello:
You and me both. Speaking of which, one of my FTD snitches tells me that on Mooney’s second day of work, McBride sent a huge floral arrangement to her dressing room with a card that read, "Thanks for everything. You’ve turned me into a mama’s boy. Love, Chi." Now, if you’re really nice (read: $$$$$), I’ll tell you which Grey’s Anatomy star sent Shonda Rhimes a pick-me-up bouquet shortly after Heigl-gate broke.

OK, that does it for this week. Reminder: Send your questions and/or hot (anonymous) tips to ausielloscoop@ew.com. And then come back here next Wednesday and we’ll do this again!

Exclusive: Perry, Bowen, Gilbert Summoned to 'SVU'

Perrybowengilbert_lYou know what they say: Where there’s smoke, there’s usually a red-hot casting scoop.

There I was, enjoying a late-night dinner Sunday on New York’s Upper West Side when who, pray tell, should walk by but Dylan McKay himself — Luke Perry! I quickly asked myself, “Self: What’s Luke Perry doing in the Big Apple?”

A few phone calls, two picked locks and one well-placed bribe later, I got my answer: He’s in town shooting an episode of Law & Order: SVU. And not just any episode: Perry’s appearing in the hit procedural’s Sept. 23 season premiere, an hour that also features guest turns by Sara Gilbert (Roseanne, ER) and Julie Bowen (Lost, Boston Legal, Ed).

According to sources, the plot revolves around a couple (Perry and Bowen) that stands accused of abusing their foster child. Gilbert plays the boy’s biological mother.

The episode also marks the debut of SVU‘s new ADA, played by One Tree Hill knockout Michaela McManus, and deals with the repercussions of Benson’s attempted rape, and answers some lingering questions surrounding the possible transfer of Ice-T’s Fin.

Bottom line: This episode is going to be smokin‘!

Melinda Doolittle signs with Hi Fi Recordings

More than a year after her third-place departure, American Idol season 6 alum Melinda Doolittle has finally found a record deal, EW.com has learned. Doolittle will join the roster at independent label Hi Fi Recordings, the current home to Todd Rundgren. The label also has had a hand in successful efforts by Avril Lavigne and Spacehog, among others. Hi Fi was founded in 1995 by music industry vet John Hecker and was originally a joint venture with major labels Elektra, Arista, and Virgin Records. Doolittle’s debut is expected to be released this fall, but an official street date has yet to be determined.
