CW honcho talks 'Gossip Girl,' and Sam Raimi's '13: The Fear Is Real'

CW president Dawn Ostroff stressed there is “no deadline” for the fledging network to prove itself as a competitive player in television and said that it’s “made a lot of progress” when it comes to developing profitable shows for the parent company. Talking to reporters at the annual TV critics gathering in Beverly Hills, Ostroff spoke enthusiastically about how Gossip Girl has cracked the zeitgeist, but acknowledged there is a huge disconnect between its pop culture status and the Nielsen households. “No doubt, this was a challenging year,” Ostroff said. “We have to figure out a way to count all those different viewing habits. Every viewer must be counted. No viewer should be left behind.”

Ostroff also announced that Reaper will return for midseason and that there are no plans to renew Beauty and the Geek.

Also up for discussion was the CW’s upcoming Sam Raimi show, 13: The Fear is Real, which will bow in the fall. The fright-fest reality show will attempt to scare the bejesus out of 13 teens dropped into the Louisiana Bayou. “The best way to describe the show is Blair Witch Project as a reality series,” says Ostroff. “There is a lot of tension and fear.” In a clip screened for reporters, the narrator said players will be “killed” off and the winner will win a prize of $66,666. “We’ll do anything for attention at the CW,” Ostroff said. “These people aren’t killed off. They disappear once they are eliminated and will never be seen again by the group of survivors.”

“We were shocking to see how invested these contestants were, they really felt the horror,” she continued. “You really feel for these people. You get to know them very quickly.”

Gossip Girl needs to be cancelled, sorry but bad writing and worse acting. Its another cliche,pre-fabricated teen show, and it doesn’t even get decent ratings…the only sad reason the show is on the air, is the sad youth of teen and pre teen girls who follow this, just like they follow the jonas brothers who can’t really sing and just like they follow hannah montana/miley cyrus who constantly takes half-naked pictures of herself…the “teen” brand needs to be reborn and rejuvenated, and gossip girl isn’t helping, what happened with real shows like My-so called life….we need to stop these teen trends and create at least decent ones

    reaper!

Dude aka Robert, you seriously have zero clue what you’re talking about. Gossip Girl has phenomenal writing and acting for a teen show. It’s obvious that you’re just a bitter old man who’s still mad that “My So Called Life” was canceled like fifteen years ago. What are you, like 30 something? Are you really in the position to be telling today’s youth what’s quality or not? We have different taste now. Today’s teens aren’t into Jordan’s, we like to watch characters who are intelligent. ;) And, Miley may take “half naked” pictures, but she’s still a better role model for teen girls than Rayanne was. ;) Also, as for the Jonas Brothers? New Kids on the Block weren’t exactly groundbreaking either. ;)

@ Robert. Are you kidding me?
@ Thomas watch those insults some 30 year olds (my sister’s friends) enjoy gossip girl.
Yes the show is scandalous. I mean it’s a guilty pleasure. It’s the ice cream you chow down on even though you know you shouldn’t.
Did you EVER see Dawson’s Creek? They weren’t sweet and innocent there. The main protagonist was a self involved jerk who couldn’t see his best friend was in love with him and instead fawned on the “bad girl” who ended up having had a pregnancy scare (if I remember correctly) and that’s why she came there.
And Miley Cyrus? She ALWAYS takes half nekkid photos? Cause if that was the case I think Child Services or the police would be on that like butter on toast. And it’s a bit dumb to blame miley. She’s a child star and doomed to this. If you want to blame anyone blame the networks for giving these children CAREERS at 12. Adults can barely handle the pressure. Why do you expect a child to? Ever hear of a mistake?

Robert: I’m 25, with an advanced degree, and an awesome Manhattan job and I LOVE gossip girl. It has witty banter, great fashion, and interesting story lines. My 50 year old mother, 20 year old sister, and 15 year old cousin also love the show and we look forward to dishing about the episodes together. Sure, it’s a guilty pleasure, but don’t presume to say that because YOU have poor taste in television the rest of the country should be punished by having a great show you don’t appreciate removed from the air. It’s “poor ratings” are only “poor” when you disregard those who watch on-line or use DVR or download epi’s from iTunes.

I’m sorry, but Gossip Girl is ridiculous. It’s every cliche and predictable outcome in the book slapped together. The CW has tried everything, and nothing has worked for this show. The “OMFG” campaign was in poor taste and that didn’t help them either. Now, the ad campaigns look like soft porn. The show is undeniably cheesy, lukewarm acting, average writing at best, and seemed worn out and tired in just the first episode.

To “Thomas”, I’m not bitter. and I’m not thirty, I’m actually sixteen, so being a teenager myself, I know what I’m talking about. So I am the youth, and yes I am in the position to tell the other youth, what I(and many others agree) what is bad and good. And if you say todays teens want to watch characters who are intelligent, then Gossip Girl is the furthest thing from that, not even character wise, but writing and acting also.
To “Alexander”: I’m not complaining that the characters are too bad, that they need to be innocent, but I’m simply saying the writing&acting sucks, and it has very low ratings, why is it still on the air? You obviously misinterpreted what I previously said about the “teen” brand and what needs to be done with it.I’m not blaming Miley, I’m just saying the trends around Miley,Jonas Brothers and Gossip Girl need to end. We at least have to have trends of good or decent quality.
And thank you “Barry”,for being some of the few smart ones to agree :-)

Gossip Girl is awesome. It is entertaining, the writing is for todays crowed, and the characters are all different. You people are idiots. You probably havent even watched it. AND, it probably GOT low ratings for the 1st season, but It was number 1 on Itunes every week for days. AND, the second season is gonna be HUGE in ratings bit#hes.

  • Robert

To “James”:Actually I have watched it,and I cringed because of the bad acting and writing. And being number one on itunes is nothing. Alot of shows have been number one in itunes but have not so good ratings, such as “Greek” and “The Office”. And please at least be classy and mature enough to not call us a female dog “James”. And what do all the characters being different have to do with anything? News-flash most shows have different characters, it is something called tv writing.

  • Samantha

Let’s also remember that Gossip Girl is based off of a successful book series. Many of the plots on the television show are from the books. And the television series is targeted for the readers of the books and for females in general.
I personally love the show. It stays fairly true to the books, but changes things enough to not be predictable.

  • louise

    gossip girl is amazing.
    i love it!
i started to have doubts mid season, but the last few episodes have been so good! :D if its so rubbish all you who says it is, why do so many people love it?
    its just opinions.
Robert: “youth of teen and pre teen girls who follow this, just like they follow the jonas brothers who can’t really sing and just like they follow hannah montana/miley cyrus” I can’t stand all that disney channel stuff. i absolutely hate hannah montana, and that stage school brat miley. I don’t think it is the same audience, as in the uk its generally people under the age of 11 watch hannah montana. i don’t like the jonas brothers either.
    stop stereotyping or whatever.

  • Amanda

Just had to add my voice to the chorus of Gossip Girl fans! It is a delightful guilty pleasure. Can’t wait for season 2!

  • Bridget

Gossip Girl sucks. What’s this new 13? Why is there nothing on it anywhere?

  • Dawn is an idiot

Is she just in denial? OF COURSE her crappy tweenage show isn’t a failure everyone thinks it is- the ratings are just wrong.
    Dumb b!tch.
