The L Word creator Ilene Chaiken is developing a spinoff of Showtime’s
popular lesbian drama series. The news was announced by Showtime president Bob Greenblatt during the cable channel’s TCA Press Tour presentation on Friday. The new show will follow one of the series’
current characters, and its storyline will most likely be introduced during the series’ final season, with the finale leaving the door open for the spinoff. Chaiken will then keep the storyline going in an online format so that it’ll be ready if Showtime indeed opts to order the spinoff to series. Greenblatt wouldn’t say which character would be spun off, though he added that the actress in question doesn’t even know about the possible series yet.
In other Showtime news, Greenblatt announced that the network had picked up Edie Falco‘s new dramedy series, tentatively titled Nurse Jackie. Falco plays a New York City nurse who struggles to be a good person. The trailer shown during Showtime’s presentation hinted at a provocative spin on a typical medical drama, with Falco creating another indelible character.
Also looking quite promising is The United States of Tara, a comedy executive produced by Steven Spielberg (and based on his own idea) and written by Diablo Cody (Juno). Toni Collette (The Sixth Sense) plays a mother and wife who struggles with multiple personalities, while John Corbett (Sex and the City) is her patient husband.

I hope they do an L word spin off! This past year was great and I am actually sad to see it go. I like the entire cast and would watch it no matter who gets the spin off but I think Shane would be a great choice to headline.
Majority of L word audience = Tibetters. If JB and LuH don’t star in a spin-off, Showtime would lose more than half of its L word fanbase right away.
The L Word is still on!? I thought it ended almost two years ago.
I agree with PL
Bette and Tina are the center of the show, so they probably won’t be in the spinoff. Nobody (except me) likes Jenny, so it won’t be her. Probably Alice.
It has to be Alice, shes the best character
Please please please let them give Jenny her own show. She is the most interesting and ever evolving (ie inconsistent) character. I would love to see what happens to her.
I would love to see an L Word spinoff….with the right character…for me, Tina and Bette are too much of an item for either of them to be featured on a spinoff, there aren´t that many stories left to tell…Jenny I can´t stand so I wouldn´t watch that, Alice I adore but I´m not sure it would be interesting enough…however, I love Shane, she´s my favourite character, and I would definitely watch a show all about her…I think there are a lot of stories left to tell about her…
I do not understand why Showtime exec. Bob Greenblatt will not embrace a full 12-13 episode last season of the L Word, instead of allowing only a limited 8 episode for 2009. What happened to Bob’s vision? RE the spinoff of the L Word, surely other characters would have guest-starring roles through out the season. Which would of course include the Jennifer Beal and Lauren Holliman characters.
C’mon, get serious. No matter who has the spin-off, all L-W fans will watch it because every character is interesting. There will probably be guest appearances as well. Jenny has the best potential with Alice coming in 2nd with a Showtime show–The Chart, with many cameos by existing cast.
THE L WORD IS THE BEST SHOW ON TV. WHY DOES IT HAVE TO END. I WILL HONESTLY BE DEPRESSED FOR A WHILE WHEN IT ENDS AND WHYYYY CANT THERE BE 12 OR 13 EPISODES IN THE FINALE? ITS AN AMAZING SHOW THAT SHOULD HAVE ATLEAST ANOTHER 2 SEASONS OR ATLEAST THE FINAL SEASON BE 12-13 EPISODES LONG. 8 IS JUST SIMPLY NOT ENOUGH.
look at how many people said they wouldnt watch the show if they actually killed dana off and they did yet people stayed true to the show. No matter who the spinoff is about people are still going to watch because it will be just as interesting. But if I had to pick, I definetly want it to be Leisha for the spinoff, but she may decline because she’s doing the tour with uhh and that ends in november, she wouldnt have time to film. Jenny is too psychotic. But then again it could be someone we arent thinking of, someone not part of the core cast…adele maybe? Who knows.
how about a prequel with erin daniels! I would love love love that! I know it has been years, but I still miss Dana!
