Travis Barker assembles all-star lineup for solo album

Tags: ,

What would an album from Blink-182′s Travis Barker sound like? It wouldn’t be 50 minutes of drum solos, nor would it have the punk flair of his side-projects, the Transplants or +44. If anything, Barker tells EW.com, he gravitates towards hip-hop, and has lined up some of the genre’s biggest names for his solo debut. “I’ve got Beanie Siegel, Lil Wayne, The Game, Rick Ross, Federation, Too $hort…” That’s in addition to reggae-flavored tracks Barker recorded with Damian Marley and Willie Nelson. “I’ve never produced an entire
record by myself,” he says. “I’ve always been accompanied by a band, so it’s just
me building beats, being creative and having fun.”

Barker is signed to Interscope Records, but says he’s in no rush to complete the album. That’s partly because his schedule is pretty packed these days. Barker is currently getting ready for an upcoming gig at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, where he will join DJ AM as the show’s house band, putting a new spin on MTV classics. Going by the name TRV$AM, the two also paired up for three sold-out shows at L.A.’s Roxy this week, where Barker let a live audience experience what has already floored 17 million YouTube viewers. After the VMAs, AM will also release an album on Interscope, and there’s talk of the two touring together.

Five Reasons Scott Porter Must Be Cast as Ryan on 'Brothers & Sisters'

Scottporter_l_2
Ever since last May, when Brothers & Sisters revealed that Sally Field’s philandering ex had produced yet another illegitimate child (this time for real), the hype machine has been in overdrive. What young actor, fans wondered, could possibly boast not only the charisma but the acting chops to go toe to toe with the ABC smash’s heavy hitters? Now that the search has begun in earnest, I’ve seriously started asking myself that same question. The answer I’ve arrived at, with sudden, blazing clarity: Friday Night Lights‘ benched MVP, Scott Porter. Here are five (of a million) reasons why:

1. The character of Ryan is an all-American JFK Jr. type. In other words, a Scott Porter type. Executive producer Monica Breen tells me exclusively that the twentysomething charmer is “not completely sure of his place in this world, because of his very complicated past, but he’s eager to find it and not afraid to fight for it when he does. He’s a born leader.” Kinda like — oh, I don’t know — a certain former Panthers quarterback.

2. FNL‘s decision to sideline Porter after only four episodes this season leaves the leading man tantalizingly free to tackle another meaty role. Like, say — oh, I don’t know — the new bastard on B&S.

3. There’s nothing that Porter can’t do. Drama? FNL — duh. Score! Comedy? Um, did you see him sending up Wham! in Music and Lyrics? Enough said. Even action? Come on, the tension stretched across his face in Speed Racer was the movie’s most authentically special effect.

4. There’s nothing that Porter can’t do well. Brilliantly, in fact. The depth of his commitment to a role is so breathtakingly complete, you can almost forgive him for being so impossibly handsome. (I said almost.)

5. On top of it all, Porter’s one of the good guys — not just a class act but also a bona fide sweetheart. At the Paley Center FNL event I moderated last Spring, he won me over with his impassioned thank-you speech to the viewers whose enthusiasm had helped the series pull off a Hail Mary renewal. Then he won me over all over again when he gamely re-enacted his cheesy dance moves from the “Pop Goes My Heart” music video.

Are you hearing me, B&S? Good. You can thank me later. Readers, you can go ahead and thank me now. Is casting Porter as Ryan the best idea in the history of ideas, or what?

Michael Phelps to appear on 'Entourage'

Olympic superstar Michael Phelps, who’s already set to host Saturday Night Live, will make a cameo on the HBO comedy Entourage later this year. Phelps scored the gig after literally stumbling upon the show’s set while it was recently shooting in Manhattan. After learning how Phelps was a big fan, series producer Doug Ellin immediately wrote the gold medalist into the episode. He’ll interact with Kevin Connolly‘s Eric Murphy in an episode scheduled to air later this year. Entourage begins its fifth season Sept. 7.

Warning: Major 'Ghost Whisperer' Spoiler Below!

Image2Consider this your final warning.

Okay, so, death is no stranger to Ghost Whisperer. Heck, the show’s very premise hinges on Jennifer Love Hewitt chatting with the dearly departed every week. (Or so Mandi Bierly tells me.)

But this season, the Grim Reaper makes it personal.

Although CBS declined to comment, multiple sources confirm what has been buzzing on the Internet for weeks (final final warning): Melinda is about to become a widow, as producers have decided to kill off TV hubby Jim (David Conrad) early in season 4.

OMFGWTFLOL?!

Simmer!

Remember, this is Ghost Whisperer, people. It’s highly unlikely that Jim’s death will mark the end of Conrad’s GW run (see also: sassy Talk Soup lady). But how long will he be sticking around and in what capacity? God only knows.

Bottom line: If, like Ms. Bierly, you only watch GW for “those special moments when he actually gets to do something, like wear a wifebeater to bed,” don’t freak out. At least not until I tell you to freak out.

Okay, time to freak out.

Casting Scoops: Arquette to 'Earl,' Marcil Invades 'Jungle,' CW Hosts 'Martin' Reunion, and More!

Image1
They say death and taxes are the only two certainties in life. I say they forgot one. Clearly, every red-blooded American can also count on finding at least one spine-tingling, show-stopping, blood-curdling, totally exclusive casting roundup a week in the Ausiello Files. Case in point:

•    Las Vegas‘ Vanessa Marcil is rolling the dice on a recurring gig at Lipstick Jungle. She’ll play Josie, a very attractive (duh!) up-and-coming music manager who promises Shane (Paul Blackthorne) a gig scoring music for a cool indie feature.

•    It’s official: David Arquette is this season’s go-to TV guest star. Fresh off his recently wrapped stint as a "freshcort" on Pushing Daisies, Arquette has landed what could be My Name Is Earl‘s funniest karmic-redemption subject yet. His character, Johnny, is a small-town Evel Knievel-esque stuntman whom Earl wants to cross off his list for sleeping with his girlfriend. There’s just one problem: A past accident has left Johnny with short-term memory issues and an existence not unlike Bill Murray’s in Groundhog Day. Good luck with that one, Earl!

•    It’s a Martin reunion! No, not on TV Land, on Everybody Hates Chris! Tisha Campbell-Martin is re-teaming with her old Martin sidekick Tichina Arnold for a multi-episode Chris arc. Campbell-Martin will channel Peaches, a sexy, edgy, vibrant ghetto princess who moves back to Bed-Stuy after a stint in prison and strikes up a frenemyship with Arnold’s Rochelle.

Exclusive: 'Rock Band 2' offering new slate of full albums

Tags: ,

Foofighters_lWhile there’s been a lot of talk over the last few years about the inevitable death of the album format, the videogame industry doesn’t appear to be listening. On Sept. 12, Metallica will release a gameplay version of their new record, Death Magnetic, through Guitar Hero, and two days later, Rock Band 2 debuts, and with it, the promise of 500 tracks by year’s end. Stocking the digital bins, EW.com has learned exclusively, will be seminal full albums by Foo Fighters (The Colour and the Shape), Red Hot Chili Peppers (Blood Sugar Sex Magik), Jane’s Addiction (Nothing’s Shocking), Megadeth (Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying) and Stevie Ray Vaughn (Texas Flood), along with a specially-compiled No Doubt Best Of collection. All are slated to roll out in the coming months, according to MTV Games.

With the first Rock Band game selling over 3.5 million game units and 21 million songs since it first hit the market in November 2007, the appetite for downloadable content seems to be insatiable. The game began offering full album downloads earlier this year, kicking off with Judas Priest’s Screaming for Vengeance and later adding the Pixies Dootlittle and the Cars’ self-titled debut album. "We’re surprised by how many people opted to get full albums," says Paul Degooyer, Senior Vice President at MTV Games. "But it’s a good value proposition. Talk about something that’s been lost and forgotten."

In addition to new songs and instruments, Rock Band 2 will also sport a new look. After the jump, check out an exclusive sneak peek at the game’s new opening sequence.

Jonas Brothers hold on a little bit longer

Tags:

Jonas_l
The Jonas Brothers’ A Little Bit Longer was true to its title and held on to the top spot of the album chart for a second week. The disc’s dropoff was rather severe: a 72 percent slide, from its boffo opening of 525,000 copies last week (the third-best debut of the year) to just 147,000 this week. But that was still far ahead of the second-place finisher, Kid Rock’s resurgent Rock N Roll Jesus, which sold 101,000 units to move up a spot to No. 2, its highest chart position since last October.

Staind had the week’s best debut, selling 92,000 copies of The Illusion of Progress to come in at No. 3. But progress really does seem to be an illusion for the neo-metal band, at least sales-wise: Their last studio effort debuted with twice as many copies, 185,000, as the new one. Ice Cube also saw his opening figures halved. Raw Footage debuted at No. 5 with 70,000 copies, less than half the 144,000 his previous album entered with two years ago. These disappointing numbers came in just days after the rapper-actor’s latest movie, The Longshots, had a lackluster box-office bow, suggesting a thaw of enthusiasm among both his gangsta and family-friendly constituencies.

Hip-hop duo Schwayze entered at No. 10 with 47,000 units. Coming in at No. 13 was the soundtrack for the Cheetah Girls’ latest Disney Channel movie, One World. That teleflick attracted an impressive 6.2 million viewers when it premiered earlier this month, coming in second only to the Olympics in its time slot. But only 34,000 of those fans rushed out to get the album. The only other debut in the Billboard/Soundscan top 20 belonged to The Academy Is…, whose third album entered at No. 17 with sales of 23,000.

Keep reading to learn about T.I.’s triumph on the singles chart….

Both the digital songs sales chart and Billboard’s Hot 100 had a fresh tune at No. 1 this week, T.I.’s “Whatever You Like,” which bowed with a smashing 205,000 downloads. Pink’s “So What” had the second-highest entry among singles, with 117,000, at No. 4. Metallica’s “Day That Never Comes” entered at No. 18, selling 58,000. Last week’s bestselling single, David Archuleta’s “Crush,” fell to No. 6 with a 46 percent decline.

The biggest sales increase on the digital songs chart was for a controversial cover of Kid Rock’s radio hit “All Summer Long.” The star has famously refused to license his material to iTunes and other download sites, preferring that fans buy the whole album, in physical form. But a mysterious act named Hit Masters, on the equally mysterious Hip Kiddy label, has taken advantage of market hunger for the tune and released a near-soundalike cover version. Their unauthorized “Summer” sold 96,000 downloads this week, a 158 percent increase, which pushed the song up 27 spots to No. 5. But let the buyer beware: The non-Kid Rock version has 1,412 consumer reviews on iTunes, as of this writing—with an average rating of one star.

Now hiring comedy writers: Nick and Disney Channel

Tags:

Don’t knock your kid’s favorite sitcom on Disney Channel or Nickelodeon. Chances are those sacchrine punchlines you hear from the mouths of babes come courtesy of the same scribes who once made you laugh at adult-oriented fare on Friends, Mad About You, and Married With Children. The dearth of comedies on broadcast TV has prompted scores of out-of-work writers to flock to the kiddie cable networks, where multicamera shows like Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place and Nick’s iCarly are thriving, thanks in part to their seasoned writing staffs.

“It’s the new frontier,” says Andy Gordon, a former member of the Back To You writers’ room who now executive produces True Jackson VP, a Nickelodeon comedy debuting in November that stars Akeelah and the Bee’s Keke Palmer as a 15-year-old fashion mogul. “The broadcast networks are nervous all the time, and it poisons the process. I’m never nervous here because we got picked up for 20 episodes. I’m not living in fear that I’ll be canceled after three weeks.”

Of course, his new gig is not completely stress-free. Since his hiring budget is limited, Gordon has had to turn away network-trained dialogue and story writers seeking employment — even though some were willing to take a pay cut. And he may see a lot more applications in his in-box by Halloween. “I’m in the same building on the Paramount lot with (NBC and CBS freshman comedies) Kath & Kim and Worst Week,” says Gordon. “They’re nice people, but if they don’t perform in (their first) three weeks, we’ll be the only ones left in the building.”

Exclusive: 'Friday Night Lights' Drafts Soap Stud

Fridaynightlights_l

Landry Clarke, meet your competition.

Friday Night Lights has tapped ex-As the World Turns troublemaker Zach Roerig to join the cast as Cash, a local rodeo star who lassoes Adrianne Palicki’s Tyra.

As executive producer Jason Katims teased back in July, Cash will appear just as Tyra’s romance with Landry is cooling off. “Tyra in the past eight months has [realized] that, while she loves Landry, she kind of feels like he’s not really The Guy,” he said. “So it becomes a story about ‘Are they going to be able to be friends? And will Landry be able to accept that?’”

My guess? Hell to the no! (Are the kids still saying that?)

Who’s side are you on? Team Landry or Team Cash? Vote below!

Kate Walsh back on 'Grey's Anatomy?'

Kate Walsh has a big job ahead for fall; she has to help relaunch Private Practice, the much-ballyhooed spinoff of Grey’s Anatomy about a beach-based group of randy doctors. But even though her character, Dr. Addison Montgomery, is starting to settle in at the Oceanside Wellness Center (David Sutcliffe guest stars as her boytoy! She asserts herself more around the offices!) she may take another trip back to Seattle Grace sometime in the middle of the season, hints executive producer Shonda Rhimes. “I don’t know if it’s going to work with the story, and we don’t want her to come back for a visit if it doesn’t feel important, something only Addison can do,” says Rhimes. “But the idea is on the table.” This wouldn’t be the first homecoming for Walsh’s Addison; the comely redhead showed up in a Grey’s episode over the spring while Practice was on hiatus.

Denise Richards: Is she in or out at E!?

Tags:

Admit it; you can’t turn away from the trashtastic hot mess that is Denise Richards: It’s Complicated on E!.  We surely can’t, which is why we’re (kind of) heartened by a tip from a certain E! source who said to ignore — for now — televised reports that the reality show featuring the ex-Mrs. Charlie Sheen and their kids has been yanked from the cabler. "Contrary to what The Insider is claiming, Denise’s show has not been canceled and decisions are still being made about the second season," says the source. "The show has been dogged with rumors of cancellation since last month’s finale, prompting the erstwhile actress to post a message on her website Aug. 8 that reads "my show did not get canceled! Our season finale aired and the ratings were great!" Stay tuned.

Exclusive: The cast of 'Survivor' Gabon

Tags:

– written by Dalton Ross

Survivorgabon_lThe 18 contestants competing this fall on Survivor: Gabon—Earth’s Last Eden for the series’ 17th cycle include an Olympic gold medalist, a Gilmore Girls actress, and a professional video game champion, EW.com has learned exclusively. Crystal Cox, who won gold at the Athens Games in 2004 as part of the 4x400m track relay team, is the biggest name on the roster this season, which premieres with a two-hour episode on Sept. 25. Also among the fresh faces is Jessica “Sugar” Kiper (Gilmore Girls fans may remember her as the pin-up model who made out with Milo Ventimiglia during her four-episode arc as Shane) and Ken Hoang, the current international champion of Nintendo’s Super Smash Brothers Melee video game. There will also be a prominent international presence, with contestants who have lived in South Africa (Gillian Larson), London (Ace Gordon), and Chile (Paloma Soto-Castillo).

As for the format, the biggest twist of Survivor: Gabon involves Exile (formerly Exile Island). “When you go to Exile this time you can either get a clue that will help you find the hidden immunity idol, or you can get ‘instant comfort’ — a nice thing to sleep on, some food, some fruit,” explains host Jeff Probst. “Depending upon the time, we’ll make the temptation bigger and bigger. The idea was to see if anybody would be dumb enough to choose comfort over the only thing that guarantees you to stick in the game, which is immunity.” Okay, did it work? “By the time this season is over, you can make the case that maybe this is the dumbest team when it comes to idol play.”

to Also for the first time ever, Survivor: Gabon will be shot entirely in HD. “If you’re a Survivor fan and you have HD, it will be a completely different show,” Probst promises. “When you incorporate the wildlife, it’s kind of like being in a Spielberg movie. I mean, it’s so real-looking that it’s exciting and scary.” And that wildlife Probst speaks of will come into play when elephants visit a tribe camp. “A truly real, raw moment of a wild animal that’s not in a park or some protected area,” Probst says.

The contestants of Survivor: Gabon will be divided up into two tribes at the very outset by a good old fashioned schoolyard pick ’em, which will immediately lead to the contestants’ first challenge. And while there are no hardcore “showmances” this time around, Probst does tease that one player proves particularly popular: “Marcus, the doctor from Georgia — one of the most arrogant guys that we’ve had on the show — he at one point had three people after him. And not only women.”

Click here for a gallery of the complete Survivor: Gabon cast, featuring comments from all the players, Probst’s thoughts on each, and exclusive on-location video interviews.

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'Smallville,' 'House,' 'Veronica Mars,' 'Office,' 'Lost,' 'CSI: NY,' and More!

Tags:

Scoop_l_3
Question: Do you have any new Lois-Clark Smallville scoop? — Trish

Ausiello: At some point within the first seven episodes, one of them will
confess their love for the other. (Hint: The one doing the confessing
is not pictured to the left.) Also within that time frame: Jimmy will ****** *** Clark’s ******.

Question: Any Gossip gossip? — Lucy

Ausiello: Team Schwavage is getting ready to introduce a new lust
interest for Serena, and I hear he’s loosely based on some dude named
Aaron Rose from the Gossip Girl books. Don’t read? Me neither! Thank
God for Wikipedia, which describes Aaron as the "herb cigarette-smoking
and vegan step-brother of Blair Waldorf and son of Cyrus Rose. He
drives a red Saab, and had an un-requited crush on his stepsister,
Blair. Later on he dated both Serena and Vanessa, and was accepted to
Harvard University."

Question: Please give me some good news regarding Cameron and House. — Tammy
Ausiello:
Not exactly sure if this qualifies as good, but Cameron starts spending a lot of time at Wilson’s pad in the first two episodes. Officially, she’s sprinkling some of her special widow fairy dust on his Amber-grieving soul. Unofficially, I’m guessing they had to…well…um…Once again Wikipedia comes through in a pinch!

Question: Just three weeks until House returns! Give us something! — Kristina
Ausiello:
Call me crazy, but I was getting a serious Damages vibe after watching the Sept. 16 season premiere.

Question: Huh? Fox’s official House site lists Thirteen’s real name as Rena Hadley. I thought her real name was Remy? — Polly
Ausiello:
It was! It is! A House rep tells me someone goofed and listed her name as Rena on the site. It should be fixed by the time you read this.

Question: Are you seriously returning to Scrubs as Dr. Kim’s baby doc? — Kevin
Ausiello:
Bill Lawrence ultimately caved in to my demands, so, yes, I can confirm that I will be reprising my breakthrough role as Dr. Hottiemchotterson in the season (and possible series) finale. In related news, take a look at the tripped-out crib I just put an offer on!

Question: Got any spoilers on Chuck? Please, I’m writing to you all the way from Spain! — Miguel
Ausiello:
Anyone know how you say "Simma down now" in Spanish? Anyhoo, Chuck boss Josh Schwartz reveals in this week’s episode of Ausiello TV that "a major character dies" in the Sept. 29 season premiere. To find out what else Schwartz has to say, click here and watch the damn thing.

Question: Is there anything you can spill about the second season of Burn Notice? — Meredith
Ausiello:
Nothing major. Just a little thing called a freakin’ 4400 reunion! Scott Peters (a.k.a. The 4400‘s creator) is directing this season’s 12th episode, which features a guest turn by none other than The 4400‘s No. 1 stud, Joel Gretsch. That’s the good news. The bad news is it’ll be a while before anyone sees the episode. You see, Burn Notice is doing that annoying cable thing and splitting its current 16-episode second season into two mini-seasons. season 2.A wraps with episode 9 on Sept. 18, and season 2.B picks up with episode 10 in early January. That puts episode 12 on the air around February…just in time for my birthday!

Question: If you want to keep your title as spoiler king, you need to hit us with some major Reaper scoop. — Jeff
Ausiello:
This just in — major Reaper scoop! Armie Hammer (no relation to the baking soda) is joining the cast as Morgan, Sam’s half bro. Although it would seem he’s only concerned with spending time at the hottest clubs and dating supermodels, Morgan is secretly jealous of Sam, and has a darker agenda which will prove to be dangerous to Sam and the gang. Do I get to keep my title?

Question: Anything and everything on CSI: NY would be greatly appreciated. — Lilly B
Ausiello:
If it’s true that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Alan Ball is going to be doing cartwheels when he hears this: CSI‘s Big Apple offshoot is looking for an actress to play a "Claire Fisher" type for a three-episode arc.

Question: Is the mystery character returning to Dunder Mifflin someone who had been previously fired? Perhaps a certain pregnant woman looking for a job? — Liz
Ausiello:
Perhaps. Perhaps not. (Translation: You’re getting warmer.)

Question: Your Veronica Mars movie post is nearing 1,500 comments. That’s good, right? — Claire
Ausiello:
It certainly doesn’t suck. You know what else doesn’t suck? My follow-up story in this week’s issue of EW (on sale Friday), in which Rob Thomas spills exclusive details about Veronica’s big-screen adventure. Hint: The FBI premise? So 15 months ago. Oh, and speaking of the new EW, I squealed like a 13-year-old girl when I saw the cover. Fifty bucks says you will, too.

Question: Anything on Lost that you haven’t been telling us? — Brenda
Ausiello:
Yep. Tons.

Question: What will change Dexter‘s life forever at the end of the first episode of the new season? — Claire
Ausiello:
The answer to this question can be summed up in two little words, neither of which I’ll be revealing here.

Question: Do you have any word on what the big love story is that Shonda Rhimes has planned for Izzie this season on Grey’s? — Jaime
Ausiello:
I’m inclined to agree with most Ausholes on this one: Bee-yotch wants her baby back, baby back, baby back.

Question: I haven’t seen a Heroes scoop in quite a while. Can you make like future Hiro and give us a small morsel? — Liz
Ausiello:
It’s official: Seth Green and Breckin Meyer will be geeking out for an episode or two (or three?) later this fall. Their deals closed last week.

Question: Any news on Pushing Daisies? — Chris
Ausiello:
Dirt‘s Danny Comden has just been cast in what my ABC spy is calling a "fun, cool" part. My response? Find me a Daisies role that isn’t!

Question: Since you’ve got the inside track, any reviews or early scoops on the HBO series True Blood? — Michael
Ausiello:
I still haven’t gotten around to watching it yet. Well, that’s not entirely true. I accidentally popped in the DVD for episode 5 thinking it was the season premiere of Entourage. My first reaction? Johnny Drama must have spent the hiatus getting cast in some really awful direct-to-DVD vampire flick. I kid you not.

Question: I was wondering if you knew anything about the renewal status of my favorite show, ABC Family’s The Middleman. I hear the ratings aren’t great. — Julie
Ausiello:
You heard right. As a result, it appears Middleman is on the verge of going on a permanent hiatus. Interesting factoid: I hear a lot of industry folks are really into the show and its leading lady, Natalie Morales. The feeling is she’s going to be what’s known as a huge-ass star.

Question: I, for one, am psyched that Michelle Rodriguez is returning to Lost. But my question pertains to your scoop last week about the casting of Darlene and Jill, or Doc Jensen’s theoretical analysis of your scoop. Was he suggesting what I think he was suggesting? — Dawn
Ausiello:
I don’t know what you think he was suggesting. But I think he was suggesting that that the left-behinders got tossed back in time when Ben cranked the donkey wheel, and we’re about to get a glimpse of the early Dharma days!

ASKED & UNANSWERED
In this new occasional feature-within-AA, I’ll be sharing with you some of the reader questions that, for reasons pertaining to personal security, laziness, minimal interest and/or a general lack of comprehension, I just didn’t feel like answering. Don’t make the same mistakes as these guys!

Question: When will TBS air the re-do of Match Game? — Paige

Question: Has any single entertainer ever won a Tony, an Emmy, a Grammy and an Oscar? — Monty

Question: Are you still based in New York or have you moved out to L.A.? — Electra

Question: How about giving us loyal Ausholes a list of fall premiere dates? — Duane

Question: The timing has never been better to invest in yourself. Technique Trading Solutions provides insight, intelligence and education for the self-directed active trader. — The Technique Trading Solutions Team
