Exclusive: 'Rock Band 2' offering new slate of full albums

Foofighters_lWhile there’s been a lot of talk over the last few years about the inevitable death of the album format, the videogame industry doesn’t appear to be listening. On Sept. 12, Metallica will release a gameplay version of their new record, Death Magnetic, through Guitar Hero, and two days later, Rock Band 2 debuts, and with it, the promise of 500 tracks by year’s end. Stocking the digital bins, EW.com has learned exclusively, will be seminal full albums by Foo Fighters (The Colour and the Shape), Red Hot Chili Peppers (Blood Sugar Sex Magik), Jane’s Addiction (Nothing’s Shocking), Megadeth (Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying) and Stevie Ray Vaughn (Texas Flood), along with a specially-compiled No Doubt Best Of collection. All are slated to roll out in the coming months, according to MTV Games.

With the first Rock Band game selling over 3.5 million game units and 21 million songs since it first hit the market in November 2007, the appetite for downloadable content seems to be insatiable. The game began offering full album downloads earlier this year, kicking off with Judas Priest’s Screaming for Vengeance and later adding the Pixies Dootlittle and the Cars’ self-titled debut album. "We’re surprised by how many people opted to get full albums," says Paul Degooyer, Senior Vice President at MTV Games. "But it’s a good value proposition. Talk about something that’s been lost and forgotten."

In addition to new songs and instruments, Rock Band 2 will also sport a new look. After the jump, check out an exclusive sneak peek at the game’s new opening sequence.

Hopefully mature lyrics can be enabled this time around!

Sweet! Full albums is a great idea. I just hope they pick really great albums for more genres. I would love to see some more hard rock/heavy metal myself. I might get flamed, but if they put a Pantera album on there, I would be very excited! Or even something like Rage Against the Machine! Or what about some Hatebreed/Killswitch Engage/Korn/SOAD/Static-X/Slayer/Trivium/Disturbed/Godsmack/Mudvayne/Slipknot? I know I will get flamed for some of those bands, but I don’t care, I vote for more heavy music on Rock Band! Trouble is, it won’t happen because they try to pick songs that will work for a wider audience. Heavy metal normally doesn’t provide that. Oh well, I’m excited for RB2 anyway!

Forget the heavy metal crap because the rock band mics ain’t top notch enough to pick up anything but stupid hardcore screaming and what’s so fun about seeing how fast you can up/down strum in a second span? Lets bring some harmony into this game guys. Where’s CSNY? The Doobie Brothers? How about some Buffalo Springfield? Remember Three Dog Night? Did you guys forget that Reggae is played with “rock” instruments too? Ever heard of Bob Marley? Peter Tosh? Toots and the Maytals? How about some more stuff to intice/excite the international crowds? Charlie Brown Jr. is a good choice. How about some Rammstein (atleast there’s some “metal” that has a noticble/followable rythm and beat)? Or what about Mana? If you posted a Mana album for download I’m willing to bet the world wide download count would top anything now…Pixies Doolittle..common guys. Try not to cater the the teeny-bopper metal/pop crowd and lets make this about really GREAT music.

P.S. If I ever see Godsmack on Rock Band I swear I will switch my loyalties to Guitar Hero World Tour and do nothing but make my own music through the composer. Godsmack…now there’s a band that should be whiped from the annals of time….Godsmack…jesus

Why cuz ur a tool and have bad taste in music?

  • Rick

Well except RockBand 2 doesn’t come out in September any longer. Its widely known that the RB2 release was delayed until October.

  • A B

Correction to Rick’s comment below. Rock Band 2 will be released (game only) on X-Box 360 on Sept. 14th. All of the other systems and the X-Box 360 full game bundle are set for release a month later on Oct 14th.

@ A B, You must not know much about the music you just crapped on, because despite what you may think there are a LOT of great riffs and melodies in the music I listed. I agree that maybe Slayer-like things might not be right for Rock Band, I was just throwing it out there. I am coming more from a drumming standpoint than a guitar playing standpoint as well, and with the double bass pedal potential, some hard rock/metal would be SO fun to play, I think. Also, I agree that Rammstein would be great on Rock Band, other than the fact that it is rather difficult to sing german for a lot of people. I don’t really know of any of the music you listed in your post, other than the Doobie Brothers, but I’m not against them putting them on the game. I’m not one to crap on other people’s opinions about this game and what songs should be on there. And people think heavy metal fans are the “mean” ones. I do agree that the Pixies album was a horrid idea though…

To the guy that says RockBand 2 has been delayed until Oct.your wrong..Oct for the ps3 not xbox…and these album choices are not that great…wish they would have picked Metallica!!!!!!!!!1111111

  • Jeff

“Pixies Doolittle..common guys. Try not to cater the the teeny-bopper metal/pop crowd and lets make this about really GREAT music.”
Ok teeny-bopper? Doolittle number 1 was released in 1989… that is 19 years ago… the album is older then most of the demographic you refer to. It has recieved critical acclaim over the years and The Pixies themselves have been refered to as the Grandfather to Mainstream Alternative music in the 90’s. They have been cited as the reason some of the best bands in the last 2 decades formed because they listend to their music. Their whole soft loud soft concept is what seattle grunge and most main stream alternative is based off of, and Nirvana (which I am aware not everyone like but you have to respect their impact on music) was quoted as saying: “I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies.” THAT is why they released it. Because the Pixies had the influence along the same par as Velvet Underground

Hey Ben…there are these puntuation tools called periods that are used to seperate written statements and ideas. Thanks alot for taking my comment out of its context though. The Pixie comment was for the DL album content. The teeny bopper comment was for those who want to see more “metal” on RB. I do not argue with you that the Pixies were an influential band of the late 80’s alt/grunge movement…but then again Elvis pretty much started what we know today as Popular Rock and Roll…but that doesn’t mean I have to like Elvis now does it? Though I’m sure Elvis would do much better in DL than the Pixies…

  • Chris Strugnell

These albums are not that great?? Are you kidding me?? Foo Fighters…RHCP’s best album ever (IMHO), Janes Addiction (although I would have preferred ‘Ritual de lo Habitual’, and Stevie Ray Vaughan are GREAT choices! I will even get some of the No Doubt stuff. And for the Metal fans…Megadeath is a pretty good metral band last time I checked. Compared to The Cars, Pixies 9still a great album) and Judas Priest, these choices are FRICKIN’ AWESOME! Bravo Harmonix and MTV games!!

  • Chris

    WIN for fun, rockin’ songs

Megadeth (Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying)

WIN for the 25% of RB players that LOVE their metal

    Stevie Ray Vaughn (Texas Flood)

A B, you’re an idiot. Why don’t you be more negative towards people’s musical tastes?
If I had to label myself, I’d say I’m a “metal head” – I grew up in the 70s and 80s, playing Metal in bands throughout high school. HOWEVER, I was extremely happy that the Pixie’s album was release, even though I can’t stand them and the crap genre that they started. Why, then was I happy. Because it brings a much wider audience to Rock Band. Also, maybe you don’t have friends and therefore don’t have RB parties, but not all the people I know like the music I like. So this gives us all something to enjoy.
Have some taste and stop being a complete a**… You may actually make some friends have people to jam with if you do.
