Exclusive: 'Lost' Freighter Cap'n Sets Sail for 'Ugly Betty'

Ex-Lost thesp Grant Bowler — he played the swarthy freighter captain who was shot and killed in last May’s finale — is dropping anchor at Ugly Betty.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that the Aussie actor has been cast in the heavily recurring role of Meade Publications’ CFO. “He’s running the business part of the magazine,” explains Betty exec producer Silvio Horta. “He’s hot and cool and all the women are in love with him.”

Rumor has it one of those women (Wilhelmina, perhaps?) may have previously raised his mast.

Oh, how I enjoy a good nautical pun…. (Additional reporting by Jessica Shaw)

Why didn’t they just use the Alexis character for this, instead of booting her to recurring? Sounds like they already had a character that could’ve filled this part perfectly and then went with a guy instead. Lame!

  • Robbie

He was hot on Lost, so I’m looking forward to this. And the show could use a few hot straight men for the women to lust after, I see that as more of the reason they cast him then his CFO conflicts (which, is unrelated to what Alexis is qualified for).

    Use Alexis for what?
The show is almost all female characters, this is just adding a dude for them to interact with, particularly a potential past love of Wilhemina.
Did you even read the story?

  • Lost Meanie?

He was a good guy from the beginning. As soon as he realized the mission was bad (he was unaware) he tried to save everyone on the boat. Especially Desmond and Sayid. Watch the show much?

The reason Alexis is recurring this year: Rebecca Romjin is pregnant with twins. There’s no way Alexis can be pregnant, or that they could easily shoot around a pregnancy with twins — therefore, she’s got to be offscreen most of the time this season.

I would have called him mysterious, but not swarthy. While there was something creepy about him, there were flashes of kindness.

Gault was a nice guy if I recall. I’ve also heard that he will be back for season 5 (according to himself).

  • Khaou

I think this guy may be Connor Aubrey (he is mentionned on the script snippet which went around a couple of weeks ago). In my opinion, he is Hilda’s new love interest at Mode but maybe I’m wrong.

  • Kyle

I hope he will still be free for Lost.

Rebecca’s pregnancy has nothing to do with Alexis becoming a recurring character. They announced her demoted status long before news broke about the pregnancy. They’ve changed a good portion of the writing staff, and this was one ‘casualty.’

  • Marcus

Mikey, he played a good character on Lost, not a “meanie”! Oops.

  • Jay

He’s also a kiwi, not an aussie. As was Alan Dale who played the original Mode boss. He was also the male lead in the NZ show Outrageous Fortune, which ABC are now remaking.

I don’t watch Ugly Betty but Captain Gault is awesome. Rough and manly yet kind and caring. Can’t wait to see more of him on Lost as promised.

  • DKT

Gault was one of the good guys! I was kind of bummed to see him go — there was something very cool about him. But in the end his death worked.

    UGLY BETTY RULES.
