'90210' Scoop: Garth's Staying, Doherty's Leaving!

Just like Brandon, Dylan, Steve, Colin, and Matt before them, 90210‘s producers just can’t get enough of Kelly. So, my sources tell me, they’ve signed Jennie Garth to appear in five episodes on top of the six to which she originally agreed.

So now we’re gonna get the Kelly-Brenda rematch we’ve all been waiting for, right?

Erm, no. Though Shannen Doherty may return later in the season, for now it appears that the first four episodes she signed on for will also be her last (the second of those episodes airs next week). “They asked me to do a lot more,” she says, but “I’m in the middle of pitching a show, [so] I couldn’t commit to more than [I did].”

That being the case, the powers that be might want to reconsider ponying up the big bucks to get Tori Spelling back on board as Donna. Though the update’s second eppy kept it Tuesday’s highest-rated show with women 18-34 (2.9/8) and women 12-34 (2.5/7), its overall numbers took a hit opposite stiffer competition, including the premiere of Fringe.

What do you think? Does 90210 2.0 need Garth and Doherty to make the grade? Or are the new characters appealing enough to make the grade on their own merits? The comments section below is yours for the filling. (Additional reporting by Jessica Shaw)

I’m a fully straight 20 year old male, who doesn’t normally watch shows like this. I admit, I DVR’d it and Fringe, and watched Fringe first, but at the end of my night, I relaxed and watched an episode of 90210. I didn’t watch the first series, so everything is new to me. Just upon first impressions, I don’t know if I would care if Shannen Doherty appeared again. I’m interested in the character of Kelly because of her role in her sister’s life, because to me Silver makes the show interesting. So I am glad to hear that there will be more of Kelly and in that more of Kelly/Silver moments, but while I won’t be sad to not see Doherty’s face on my screen again, i’m guessing to the whole continuum of the show, she’s important.

As a watcher of the original 90210 when it first aired, I enjoy seeing Kelly and Brenda on the show. However, it won’t bother me to have Brenda leave. I think it makes more sense for Kelly to stick around because she actually works at West Beverly. I really want to know who Sammy’s father is. I can’t imagine either Dylan or Brandon neglecting him though. And wouldn’t Kelly refer to Brenda as Sammy’s aunt if Brandon is the father?
I’d like to see more Silver and less Naomi. The cheating father/aware mother storyline was so obvious and cliched.

As a fan of the original, I’m LOVING this version!!! :) Of course I was a kid when the original was on, but I watched it with my Mom and caught up on the repeats. So the old and new appeal to this 22 year old girl. LOL ;) I love seeing the mix on the show too. And Kelly’s storyline, and Brenda being back. But what’s really got me hooked it the budding friendship/romace of Annie and Ethan; Silver’s character and her friendship with Dixon and Annie; the Wilson’s family dynamic; and all those really good teen drama, agnst, and comical moments. :) This show is really good, and I’m loving watching chracters back in the 90210 zip. I’ve actually been wanting a spinoff for sometime. :) Now they just need to bring on Hannah and some more hot guys. LOL ;)

I really don’t care about Brenda.
BTW the only two interesting characters are Silver and Naomi (maybe because Stroup and McCord are the only two people able to act in this show) so I think it’s ok to have Kelly sticking around.
Screwing up the only working storyline it’s not a good idea :D

We all know Shannen doesn’t always play well with others, so not having her around on any kind of permanent basis is probably a good idea for everyone involved. And since they only have her there to direct the school play it wouldn’t really make sense for her to hang around at this point.
Right now the show’s biggest issue is that the girls are all SCARILY thin. It’s honestly upsetting to watch.

I think they need to bring in Dustin Diamond back as Screech… Wait, wrong show.

Love Garth! Watched the 2nd ep of 90210 last night and wasn’t impressed. I’m thinking “if this doesn’t get better, i’m out of this zip code!” lol As for Doherty, her 1st ep was nice but left much to be desired. The younger kids aren’t cutting it yet cause their characters have yet to be fleshed out.

Q: Are the new characters appealing enough to make the grade on their own merits?
    A: No.

Hell, I love Kelly more than any of the other originals and I love that she’s now Silver’s guardian…. but the entire series doesn’t require originals left and right. I love the new characters, even Naomi (who I hated on Nip/Tuck) whose home-life isn’t what she thought. Love the chemistry between everyone from Annie and Ethan to Dixon and Silver & I love Navid too.
I am thrilled that Debbie and Harry get a good role, but more Tabitha is needed. Jessica was sorely missed this week!
I want to see originals, but that’s not what has me hooked!
ps – Dylan or Brandon? Hmmmm. I’d assume it’s Dylan…. Brandon wouldn’t shirk his role as Dad!

Last night’s episode was just about the worst ever. Of anything. That last scene with drunk mama stumbling around was borderline camp, but too heavy handed to actually be funny.

  • jane

Totally academic. This show will be cancelled long before Garth fulfills her commitments or Shannon has a chance to return.

  • Melissa

More importantly, is Nat staying around??

  • Mari

There is no way that Brandon is the father. Last week when Brenda showed up, Kelly and Brenda were talking about Brandon and what he was up to. That only leaves Dylan as the father since Kelly said it was someone she was with from high school.

Whats the date for Shannen’s last episode? That way I know when to take it off my DVR. Show is a mess and not in a good way

  • jaime

Um no. . .we need more original characters. . .bring back the guys! Screw it write out all the current chracters and just bring back all the old ones. . .wow that would be a hit!
