Jordin Sparks doesn't regret promise ring remarks at VMAs

Katy Perry may have covered “Like A Virgin” at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, but Jordin Sparks was living it — loudly. Attending the show for the first time, the American Idol winner went off-script after being agitated by host Russell Brand’s repeated mocking of the Jonas Brothers’ promise rings. “It’s something I feel strongly about,” she tells EW.com. “I wish I would’ve worded it differently — that somebody who doesn’t wear a promise ring isn’t necessarily a slut — but I can’t take it back now. It was a split-second thing, and it came out kind of wrong. Still, I don’t regret it.” Neither do the Jonas sibs, who complimented Sparks moments after the rant. As for Brand, he and Sparks shared a laugh after the show. “I have nothing against him at all,” says the singer, who insists she’s not turned off by the experience. In fact, she’d happily go back. That is, “If I get an invite.”

How disappointing to have to Stomach and Endure this Nonsensical and Inappropriate Russell Brand Spewing’s!! Taking shots at our Commander in Chief, making a mockery of young people who choose abstinence from premarital sex (which is to be commended and honorable), and continuing like a rabid Chihuahua attacking such great role models like the Jonas Brothers is deplorable and unacceptable!! Russell Brand’s continued sexual comments about masturbation and his political musings in telling us who to vote for when he doesn’t have the privilege or right to vote in our country is absolutely ludicrous! All of this my 14 year old daughter was exposed to!! How can MTV Sanction This?! Russell Brand owes this country and especially the Young Americans a Major Apology!!
I was so impressed and delighted when Jordin Sparks stepped up to the plate(the only one)with her retort regarding purity rings!
HA! Now THAT was funny! How apropos! Good on Jordin!

How could you possibly NOT take shots at the worst President in history? He’s a joke of a human being, with an IQ lower than most bowling balls. Brand has a much right as anyone to point out the amazingly stupid behavior of the types of people that would vote for Bush and his party. They are a global joke – with a horror twist. Cheers to Brand for pointing that out.

Jordin Sparks’comment was ridiculously inappropriate.I have no probs w/ promise rings and agree that her expressing her beliefs was admirable, but she should definitely apologize for the way in which it was worded, even if it was a mistake. She’s damn right she can’t take it back because the damage is done, we’ve already seen how judgmental she is.But what’s most offensive is her BS half apology sumbody “who doesn’t wear a promise ring isn’t necessarily a slut”How can she claim to take her job as a role model seriously while using such a degrading name to describe any of her female sisters. That’s the way she wants to empower her young female fans(or ex-fans like myself),by perpetuating the madonna/whore complex and creating a divide btwn”sluts”and proper girls.Part of being a role model is standing up for what you believe in but not judging or condemning those who disagree with you.Young girls using hurtful words like slut is such a problem and I pray they find better role models than JS!

It just entertainment. If you’re letting your kid watch the MTV video music awards, then you should know from past years, that it’s going to be really pushing the limits. If you were expecting some PG rated entertainment, then should have flipped the channel before it even aired. It’s all in good fun. Nothing more, nothing less. I think anyone with a sense of humor thought it was just mindless banter.

Jordin Sparks is a reactionary bible thumper who needs to take a long hike off a short pier along with Elizabeth Hasselbeck.
Anyone notice how they have the same defensive, immature air of pampered, smug superiority? I suspect this contest winner with a decent voice and zero star quality must have been fuming all night at Russell Brand’s cracks (which weren’t all that funny anyway, he was obviously bombing with the audience), and felt she just HAD to defend the Jonas Bros (and G. W. Bush maybe?), but came off like a snippy little brat.
If people want to be virgins, that’s fine. The promise ring thing is childish and embarrassing.

  • Snarf

She’s a pious halfwit who needs to learn to think before she speaks.

  • Sindee

Jordin is an overpriviledged ignoramous who will probably be pregnant and need a shotgun wedding. BTW, do the math. Sarah Palin was preggers when SHE got married. Guess the world is just full of sluts!

  • ToMoKA

Come on. Why would you let your 14 year old watch MTV. Flava of Love, I Love Money, Hogans. I am calling CPS on you.

In a society where middle schoolers are banned from giving blood to the Red Cross because they go to a school where STDs are so rampant the RC just doesn’t consider the risk worth it (this actually is the case in some areas of the U.S.), role models for teens & kids SHOULD be doing something to encourage those young ones not to be engaged in such activity until the time is right (i.e. later on in life, when they are more mature). Yet people have the nerve to attack them for standing up for morality. Shame on you all.

First of all, Sparks even getting steamed up over Brand’s idiotic remarks shows her immaturity. Her making the slut comment shows her lack of judgment. Kudos to the Jonas Bros. for letting the words of a desperately unfunny, unattractive, hate-mongering British dolt roll off their backs with grace and dignity. Boo to Sparks for acting like a typical ugly American.

I doubt whether the majority of Jordin’s young fanbase wear purity rings. She’s just called them all sluts, though not ‘necessarily’.
Girls, make up your own minds. Don’t let a sanctimonious ex-reality show contestant with a 15th century mentality dictate your decisions.
When she falls off that high horse, there’s going to be one hell of a bang.

I feel the comments from Jordan are correct for an 17/18 year old. I applaud her for calling it like it is. MTV is a haven for slutty behavior (Next, Tila, the Spring Break specials, etc…) and it is nice to have someone in the industry standing up for the not so “loose” people (boys and girls).

  • MandyK

Good for Jordin for speaking out. You all know what she was reacting to. Brand was not suggesting that the Jonas Bros. have a single, meaningful, relationship that is sexual. Brand was making fun of the JoBro for not taking advantage of all the girls that are throwing themselves at them all day, everyday. Why attack Jordin for using the word “slut” in a night where much worse was said by Brand? I thought what Brand said about the Palin family and the boyfriend from Alaska was horrible. But that’s MTV for you…our tv went on mute everytime Brand came out. As a rule I don’t allow MTV shows on in my house. I made an exception for the VMAs and I really regret it.
