Oprah chooses best-selling 'The Story of Edgar Sawtelle'

Though it’s unclear whether her endorsement will mean much for Barack Obama, we’ve already seen what an Oprah Winfrey recommendation can do for an obscure novel (see White Oleander, Gap Creek, etc.). But her most recent book club pick, The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, by first-time novelist David Wroblewski, was already one of the year’s surprise bestsellers when she gave it the nod late last week. With a modest first printing of 26,000, the 562-page Shakespearean saga about a mute Wisconsin boy and the inner life of dogs hit the New York Times bestseller list on June 29 and has remained there ever since.

How much better can things get for Wroblewski, who once worried the book he labored over for 10 years wouldn’t find a publisher?

Much.

At the time of Oprah’s announcement, HarperCollins had 300,000 copies in print. They’re now rushing out an additional 750,000 to meet projected demand.

I am soooooooooo sad after reading this book!!! Was Essay going back to Henry’s house with all the dogs? I feel so much the need to talk to somebody who has read this book, and have never before felt that way after reading ANY book! The ending, for me, was just tragic and I didn’t see it coming–not for a mile. Oh, I wish I could talk to SOMEBODY about this book!!!

MIxed feelings about the book. I thought it was a little drawn out. I did not like the ending. I am still uncertain. To me it was ok. Not sure if I would read him again.

The only thing that self loving witch of an Oprah could say to get my attention would be Hey’I am giving you a new car and some money.Other than this that taking head could not say a word I need to hear,Honestly why do people fall all over themselves when she speaks. You would think she actually is a goddess or something.PLEASE !! Realize she is only a talk show host and nothing more. When she get’s out of bed with Gale in the morning, she probably thinks how can I mess with the weak minded people in America today.Wake up people.Oprah knows nothing more than what is written for her by some flunky she overpays to make her look smart.
