Studs Terkel dies at age 96

Studsterkelobit_l Studs Terkel, the multihyphenate Windy City icon, has died, the Chicago Tribune reports. The author-historian-actor-activist-radio announcer-television host passed away on Friday at age 96; he had been in declining health for years, culminating in a fall in his home two weeks ago.

Born in New York City, Terkel moved to Chicago as a child. Though educated in law, he rose to fame during the Great Depression, when he joined the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Writers Project and went into radio. He remained on the air and in the public eye in various iterations and via multiple media largely until his death, having written more than a dozen books of commentary and oral history, including the 1974 classic Working and the 1984 World War II tome The Good War, which won the Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction. The Tribune reports that a copy of his latest book, P.S. Further Thoughts From a Lifetime of Listening (due out in November), was at Terkel’s bedside when he passed away.

Britney Spears' 'Circus': Cover art revealed!

Spearscircus_l
A month before Britney Spears’ sixth studio album, Circus, hits stores, it’s now time for the big album art reveal! Spears’ official site, Britney.com, has the exclusive on this one, but in case you’re not refreshing the page as often as we are, here it is.

While we have yet to hear Circus in its entirety, those who have report that the album is Britney at her finest — closer to her pop beginnings with Swedish song maestro Max Martin, but still edgy where it needs to be. If the chart-topping performance of “Womanizer” is any indication — “It’s cool!” Justin Timberlake recently told EW — Circus could be a huge hit.

Ratings: '30 Rock' rolls to a big premiere as CBS wins again

30rocratings_l
Maybe absence (and a spot-on Sarah Palin impression) does make the heart grow fonder. Emmy-winner 30 Rock’s late-in-the-season premiere didn’t win its 9:30 p.m. time slot on Thursday, but the sitcom starring Tina Fey (pictured, left, with Megan Mullally) did nab 8.5 million viewers (up a million from last year’s opener) on a yet another Thursday night on which CBS claimed victory. 30 Rock’s NBC lead-in, 9 p.m.’s The Office, had a similarly good night. The show’s Halloween episode attracted 9.3 million watchers, the most this season since its Sept. 25 premiere. ER also scored for the third-place Peacock network. The return of Shane West’s double amputee Dr. Ray Barnett to County General drew 9.1 million viewers at 10 p.m. (16 percent more than tuned in for the show’s season debut), placing ER just above its ABC opponent, Life on Mars.

But don’t cry for Life on Mars. The freshman drama was finally up after two weeks of steady decline: 8.4 million tuned in, a 6 percent increase from the previous episode. Elsewhere on the alphabet network, Ugly Betty secured 8.6 million watchers, slightly below last week’s tally (Ralph Macchio’s guest spot didn’t do it for you?), and Grey’s Anatomy earned its highest ratings since September, taking in 15.1 million viewers and earning the night’s No. 1 spot among adults 18 to 49.

Nevertheless, CBS was the night’s top net, winning every time slot
between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. and collecting an average 14.4 million viewers.
At 8 p.m., Survivor: Gabon drew 13.3 million watchers (still a bit below Survivor: China’s 14.2 million average). At 9 p.m., Thursday’s highest-rated show for four weeks in a row, CSI,
attracted 18.6 million (a decline form last week’s 19.5 million, but well above
last season’s 16 million average). And at 10 p.m. the freshman
procedural Eleventh Hour held on to 60 percent of CSI’s viewers, rounding out the night for the Eye with 11.5 million.

Fox’s double shot of Kitchen Nightmares (a rerun at 8 p.m.
and a new episode at 9 p.m.) brought in an average 3.8 million viewers for the
network. While over at the usually neglected CW, Smallville held steady at 4.2 million and Supernatural earned 3.5 million (a 40 percent increase from last season’s average).

Scoop: ABC Wants More 'Samantha Who?'

Samanthawho_lABC is going (almost) all the way with Samantha Who?

An ABC insider confirms that the network has ordered seven additional episodes of the sophomore comedy, bringing the total number of eppys produced to 20.

For the record, that’s two episodes shy of the traditional full season order. Why so stingy? The ABC source says the net has so much midseason inventory (i.e. Scrubs, According to Jim) that it didn’t need the full 22.

So far this season Sam Who? has averaged a so-so 10.5 million viewers behind Dancing With the Stars. Although that’s down compared to last year, the show still wins its time slot among women 18-49.

Exclusive 'Melrose 2.0' Deets: Heather Returning? 'One Tree' Boss Helming?

Heatherlocklear_l
Almost immediately after the news broke that The CW was contemplating a 90210-esque reboot of the original’s spin-off, Melrose Place, the buzz turned to Heather Locklear. Would she? Could she? Should she?

Perhaps because her tumultuous personal life has been extra public lately, the actress formerly known as Amanda Woodward declined to be interviewed for this story. But a top Hollywood talent agent sees little downside in her slipping back into the man-eater’s trademark miniskirts: “It certainly wouldn’t hurt her to do it.” Even a high-ranking exec at a rival net is excited by the prospect of seeing Aaron Spelling’s old good-luck charm back in action. “She should wait and find out what the actual concept is,” says the suit. “But if it involves her running [her old Melrose ad agency] D&D à la The Devil Wears Prada, she should jump at it.”

Besides a decent premise, Locklear should also hold out until the series has someone decent in charge. Or someone, period. Darren Star, who created the original, has apparently passed. Now CW president Dawn Ostroff is looking internally for a boss, sources say. One Tree Hill creator Mark Schwahn, who just inked an overall deal with CBS/Paramount, the studio behind Melrose 2.0, is one name being bandied about. The exec confirms that he’s been approached, but adds, “That doesn’t mean I’m on [Dawn's] short list. It’s kind of natural they’d call.” Is he even interested? “Never say never…though I’m more about creating something new. I’m the guy to call when they want to remake One Tree Hill.”

One person who definitely won’t be taking on the job is Josh Schwartz, who has his hands full with The CW’s Gossip Girl and NBC’s Chuck. But he can still dream, can’t he? “I would make the apartment complex a retirement home and have it star Rue McClanahan, Betty White, and Bea Arthur,” he jokes. “That way you get two hit shows in one.”

What do you think? Should Heather sign on? Who else from the original cast would you like to see move back in? And what about Schwahn? Is he the right man for the job? And if not him, who? Comment away! (Additional reporting by Andy Patrick and Jennifer Armstrong)

Exclusive: '30 Rock' Goes 'Mad' for Jon Hamm

Tags: ,

30rockmadmen_l
Warning: This next story may make you pee your pants.

TV’s best comedy and drama are about to collide in the most spectacular of ways.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Mad Men star Jon Hamm is in advanced talks to do a multi-episode arc on 30 Rock.

Cross your legs — there’s more!

I’m told Hamm, who presumably got bit by the 30 Rock bug last week while hosting Saturday Night Live, would be playing a potential love interest for Tina Fey. Word is he’s Liz’s neighbor.

Although Hamm’s deal isn’t done, my Rock-solid mole assures me that it’s happening.

Okay, go make your business now.

PS: 30 Rock returns tonight at 9:30 on NBC. If you know what’s good for you, you’ll watch it.  (Additional reporting by Lynette Rice)

Ratings: Barack Obama, World Series hit it big

Barackobama_l
Barack Obama’s 30-minute presidential ad — aired on CBS, NBC, and Fox — drew in a total of 26.4 million viewers Wednesday night, with NBC getting the most love. Meanwhile, ABC’s decision to skip Obama’s ad and air recently flailing series Pushing Daisies paid off, as 6.6 million viewers chose pie over politics (a no-brainer!), a 14 percent increase from Daisies‘ audience last week. But it was Fox’s telecast of World Series Game 5 (which finally concluded the game that started but was rained out on Monday) that won the night with an average of 16.7 million viewers over 90 minutes.

Both of CBS’ trusty Wednesday-night procedurals lost viewers this week: Criminal Minds (13.8 million) was down from 15 million, while CSI: NY (13.6 million) lost 800,000 viewers from last week. The New Adventures of Old Christine (7.6 million viewers) dipped only slightly. Meanwhile, both of NBC’s hourlongs saw ratings spikes: Deal or No Deal (9 million viewers) enjoyed a 16 percent bump from last week, and some of those Dealers stuck around for Lipstick Jungle, which averaged 4.9 million viewers after hitting a series low last week with 4.3 million viewers.

The second episode of The CW’s new series Stylista lost 30 percent of its series-premiere viewership from last week, while this week’s Amsterdam-set Top Model lost 800,000 from last week, thanks to the campaign special on neighboring networks. (I always suspected Tyra’s foreign policy was thinner than Obama’s. Now I have proof.)

'Grey's Anatomy' Exclusive: Mary McDonnell's Secret Revealed!

Marymcdonnell_l
If you suspected there was a twist surrounding Mary McDonnell’s three-episode Grey’s Anatomy arc, congratulations, you were right. Turns out her character, a celebrated cardiac surgeon brought in to boost Seattle Grace’s national ranking beginning Nov. 13, is living with Asperger’s syndrome. “Shonda [Rhimes] thought it would be interesting to have an incredibly skilled surgeon who, socially, is initially misunderstood,” explains executive producer Betsy Beers of the autism-related disorder, which is characterized by eccentric behavior and a general social awkwardness. (Think Emily Deschanel’s Brennan on Bones.) Eccentric behavior and social awkwardness? Sounds like she’ll fit right in! Or will she? Only time — and my following exclusive Q&A with the fraktabulous McDonnell — will tell.

AUSIELLO: How does everyone react to your character, Dr. Virginia Dixon?
MARY McDONNELL:
In her first surgery she works primarily with Bailey
and Karev, who are both sort of caught off guard by her difficulty in
communication. They don’t really know until the end of the episode that
she has Asperger’s. It’s challenging for them. On the one hand, you’re
introducing a dramatic and comedic dynamic that people have to react
to. On the other hand, you’re bringing on a very dignified real human
being with a disability that can be very problematic for everyone.

What’s it like playing her?
It’s been a wonderful experience. Grey’s has to do with social nuance
and behavior between people, and this is a character who can’t really
relate to any of that. She comes in and brings a little bit of a
different behavior to Seattle Grace.

How different are we talking? She’s still going to hook up with one of her colleagues, right?
[Laughs] So far, I have to tell you, I don’t see any romance. That just
makes me giggle. But she’s just coming in for three episodes so far, so
we’ll see. That’s the furthest thing from her mind.

Might your stay be extended beyond the three episodes?
There’s always a possibility. I think with this character, there’s a
great collaboration to kind of experiment with her and with her
situation and see the kind of effect it may have on the world of
Grey’s, because she’s very atypical.

Did Shonda create the role with you in mind?
I don’t know if it was created with me in mind, but I was told that
Shonda had me on her mind as soon as she started thinking about it.
She’s put a great deal of trust in me, and it’s part of why I wanted to
do it. Because when someone hands you something this compelling and
complicated and gives you good writing and also says, “I’m trusting you
to find the nuance here,” then you kind of go home and think, I’m lucky
to be alive.

week’s Ask Ausiello. To weigh in on her Grey’s stint, scroll down

Jane Lynch cast in Fox's 'Glee'

Janelynch_l
Jane Lynch is now filled with Glee: The comedic actress (Best In Show) has joined the cast of Fox’s musical dramedy pilot from Nip/Tuck’s Ryan Murphy about a Spanish teacher (Broadway star Matthew Morrison) who takes charge of a high school glee club. Lynch will play the antagonistic coach of the school’s cheerleading squad. The Glee gang also includes Jessalyn Gilsig (Nip/Tuck), Stephen Tobolowsky (Heroes), and another Broadway actor, Lea Michele. If Glee is picked up by Fox, it could hit the air as early as Spring.

'Privileged' Casting Coup: Rose Falls for a Franco!

No, not James Franco — the next best thing: his younger sib!

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Dave Franco, the up-and-coming brother of movie star James, is joining Privileged for a multi-episode arc. He’ll play a love interest for Rose (Lucy Hale).

Franco’s previous credits include Fox’s short-lived comedy debacle Do Not Disturb and ABC Family’s awesome Greek.

His Privileged arc kicks off in early ’09.

In related news, I’m still waiting on that back-nine pickup. Yes, Dawn Ostroff, I’m talking to you. (Additional reporting by Oriana Schwindt)

Exclusive: More 'Gossip,' 'Tree Hill,' '90210' on the Way!

Meestermurraygarth_l
My dream of a 52-episode Gossip Girl season is moving closer to reality.

Two weeks after extending GG‘s season by two episodes (from 22 to 24), The CW has informed exec producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage that it wants to tack on one more for a grand total of 25 episodes (and counting).

And this time, The CW is spreading the love around.

Sources also confirm to me exclusively that the net has ordered two additional episodes of One Tree Hill and 90210, extending both shows’ seasons to 24 episodes apiece.

Tree Hill has been a surprise success story for The CW. Despite my best efforts to destroy it, the six-year-old soap has been on a ratings roll, posting double-digit gains over last season and consistently building on its Gossip lead in. Not too shabby.

And 90210, while off its initial highs, has become a solid (if not spectacular) performer among its target audience of men and women age 18-49 who work at Entertainment Weekly young females.

Courteney Cox to star in ABC pilot 'Cougar Town'

Tags:

Courteneycox_l
Here’s some good Dirt on Courteney Cox: The Friends actress is returning to the land of comedy with Cougar Town, an ABC pilot in which she stars as a hot 40-year-old mother who’s newly single. Cox — who recently anchored the FX drama Dirt and has a development deal with ABC Studios — will exec produce the single-camera comedy with Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence, who also is cowriting the pilot. Cougar Town is expected to be a candidate for the 2009-2010 schedule. It’s a reteaming of sorts for Cox and Lawrence: Cox shot a three-episode guest arc on Scrubs that is slated to air later this season.

Beatles videogame slated for 2009, but still no iTunes

Tags: ,

Beatles_l In a conference call at 10 a.m. ET this morning, the Beatles’ Apple Corps. Ltd., MTV Games, and Harmonix announced a new videogame using the Fab Four’s catalog. And little else.

The game, which will have music supervision by Giles Martin, son of longtime Beatles producer Sir George Martin and co-producer of the Beatles’ Love project with his dad, is slated for the 2009 holidays. It will not be a Rock Band game, however; it will be a wholly new, stand-alone title. Details will unfold in the coming months.

As of 10:15 a.m., an iTunes rep officially declined comment as to whether this finally opens the gates for the Beatles’ catalog to be offered on iTunes.

There has been talk of an all-Beatles videogame for months, but where it would land — MTV Games’ Rock Band franchise or Activision’s Guitar Hero — remained a mystery. Whether it will also include the band members’ likenesses is still unclear, although the game will feature different eras of the band’s career visually, starting with the black-and-white feel of the early ’60s and moving into the mod Rubber Soul years, Yellow Submarine, and their final hippie phase. (No word yet on whether the game will introduce new instruments, but here’s hoping for a plastic sitar.)

For Harmonix, the company that develops Rock Band, the Beatles game will be the big priority for 2009. In June, Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos put the Beatles at the top of his artist wish list, along with Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, and the Rolling Stones. “titanic bands of that era that have a special place in people’s hearts,” he told EW. (Rock Band has since secured exclusive rights to AC/DC’s music.) MTV president Van Toffler, when asked about the probability of an all-Beatles game, joked, “I heard they’re pretty popular. That would be big, right?” But around the same time, Guitar Hero cofounder Kai Huang was still holding out hope. “The Beatles are very unique: They’re a band and an industry who have always been very guarded about their music and careful about who they choose as partners,” he said in August. “We’ve been waiting, as everybody else in the world has been waiting, to get their music.”

You could point to Martin Bandier (former EMI Music Publishing head and current CEO of Sony/ATV Publishing, which controls more than 200 Beatles copyrights) as the man who got the ball rolling. He told the Los Angeles Times back in March that a videogame centered on the Beatles’ music is “something we have talked about and something I’d like to pursue.” This came on the heels of American Idol’s first Beatles-themed episode. Which leaves one more subset of the industry for the Fab Four to conquer: digital downloads. To date, the Beatles’ Apple Corps has yet to authorize sales of their songs via the other Apple, iTunes. Perhaps that, too, will change soon enough.

A representative for MTV had no comment, and a Harmonix representative would not confirm any details included in this story.
