Major Spoiler Alert: Who's Dying on 'Gossip Girl'?

Girl_lSpotted: A body bag on the Upper East Side.

You may have heard — a pivotal Gossip Girl character will soon be laid to rest, setting off a series of aftershocks that will reverberate well into next year. By using both Met-step chatter and common sense, I narrowed the field of candidates to the following five characters — one of whom, a source confirms — is the victim.

Vanessa (Jessica Szohr)
Why She’ll Die: As much as I adore Szohr, let’s face it, her alter ego is easily the most expendable of Girl‘s core clique. As a bonus, eliminating Vanessa would get Gossip Girl author Cecily von Ziegesar off producers’ backs.
Why She Won’t: Who’d steam everyone’s lattes?

Bart (Robert John Burke)
Why He’ll Die: His death would be a massive story generator: Not only would it pit Lily and Chuck against each other in a battle over the millionaire’s estate, but it would add a new layer of angst to Ed Westwick’s brooding scion.
Why He Won’t: Come on — killing the old guy? Way too obvious.

Nate (Chace Crawford)
Why He’ll Die: Rumor has it that Crawford recently made some noise about wanting a fatter paycheck. Killing off his character would nip a potential salary dispute in the bud.
Why He Won’t: He’s the prettiest one on the show, for chrissakes!

Rufus (Matthew Settle)
Why He’ll Die:  It would rid the world of Lincoln Hawk and Dan would be forced to grow a pair.
Why He Won’t: His unrequited romance with Lily is where Gossip‘s true heart lies.

Georgina (Michelle Trachtenberg)
Why She’ll Die: Everyone loves a good, old-fashioned murder mystery.
Why She Won’t: For starters, she’s not currently on the show. Plus, producers would be foolish to permanently wipe out the Alexis to Serena’s Krystle.

    How about all of them?

  • Jo

    I bet it’s Bart

When I first knew someone was about to die, my first thought was “Vanessa!”
    1) As u said, killing the old guy is too obvious. Besides, they wouldn’t end a rich storyline like Lilly’s marriage right now.
    2) Nate may be an ass in the show, but he’s still one of the main characters, so… I don’t think so!
    3) Rufus is “too important” to be killed, he has too much story left, yet.
    4) They wouldn’t bring Georgina back just to kill her.

Well it’s not the Captain, which was my original guess, so thanks for that Mike! My new guess is Bart now, the Lily vs Chuck thing is too, too fascinating, and there’s a bit of a setup with the dirt Bass Sr. so helpfully looked up pre-mortem. Plus it paves the way for Rufus and Lily attempt 2.0 (the same reason Rufus can’t die). Nate would just be unnecessary and pointless, Vanessa is polarizing but helps broaden their circle AND frankly, wouldn’t have a huge impact, and Georgina is just… meh. No, if they really want a shock, with plenty of impact for some of our favorite characters, that also opens the door to a bunch of new plots, it’s gotta be Bart. Sorry dude, also looking forward to hurt and vulnerable Chuck finally being comforted by Blair.

I think you can effectivey rule out the last three on that list. Nate is too much of a central character. Though the Rufus idea is intriguing especially with rumors running rampant that his beloved daughter is ready for emancipation, I think you’re right – he and Lily will be together in the end. Killing him off wouldn’t make sense though it would be the most shocking. And Georgina just isn’t important enough to kill unless it did start a murder-mystery storyline, but that seems far-fetched.
By process of elimination, that leaves Vanessa and Bart. I’m really torn because technically they could lift both fairly easily out of the picture. I could see them killing Bart to save Lily her – what would it be now? – sixth divorce? Though Vanessa would seem much more tragic and would explain the recent photos of Little J having a meltdown. My money is on Vanessa, but I won’t be shocked if it turns out to be Bart either.

Its obviously Bart. I mean, its pretty much the same as the OC- middle aged social climber with a pretty daughter marries millionaire older man, but is in love with someone else. Plus, Rufus isn’t going to get with Lily if she’s married.

  • sarah

it is going to be Bart. If they kill off anyone else on that list fans of the show will be pissed

  • Jo

I mean just because there’s a scene where little J is crying hysterically doesn’t mean somebody died! Shes a 14-15 year old girl! My moneys still on Vanessa.. But i hope Rufus, god i hate that boring piece of sh….

  • paula

please let it be vanessa, she’s such a troll

  • Brittney

    I say Bart

  • Disco Nicole

Rufus does have a big part in the story, but I saw some pictures of Taylor Momsen crying during a scene and being comforted by Blair and Blair’s mother. The only person I could see Little J having such devestating cry over is the loss of her dad. Plus if Rufus did die, it would be a great story for Lily. Trying to make her marriage work by learning to love the man she married while grieving the man she truly loved?! That’s some serious CW drama!
I won’t totally rule out Nate or Vanessa though. Vanessa needs to walk away from the espress machine and get a better storyline.

  • Sabrina

I really hope it’s Bart for Rufus/Lily sake… but I can’t stand Vanessa so I secretly hope it’s her! (Refer to the PopWatch about “characters that you despise for no reason.”)

  • Pinky

I hope it’s Bart or Vanessa. Bart’s storyline with Lily is heating up but I’m sure by the time he exits it will have hit its peak. Who doesn’t want to see a mournful Chuck rising like a Phoenix? As for Vanessa, the poor girl has great storylines they could use (supports herself, homeschools? What else does she do?) but they never give her anything but a few sentances to further other charators on the show. She could easily exit without many problems.

  • Joanna

I thought of an awesome story, Bart kills Rufus!

  • TheOtherGrayson

    Can it be Dan?
Serena is ten times more enjoyable without Dan’s sputtering, judgmental company.
