I am Irish & I have Asperger’s, I have only seen one US actor portray an Irish charicter flawlessly, Brad Pitt in Snatch (an Irish Traveler accent). Most US actors playing Irish are excruciatingly inaccurate. As for Mary McDonnell, who I briefly saw in the role of Dr. Dixon, she seems to have tried too hard, she did a text book case and this made her charicter too severe, frankly autistic (I have met about 100 people with Asperger’s, a few with autism). It would have been nice if she spent a day with adults with Asperger’s, rather then relying on a written description and one recollection of a child with Asperger she met. But, like Irish watching Americans actors playing us, we see only the flaws.
You know, I was offended at this character I think that although there may be people similar to her living with Aspergers. I think she was a stereotype, two good friends of mine back in high school had it, and they really taught me a lot. They weren’t ridiculous card board cut outs of societies image of an autistic person either.
If anyone on the show has aspergers it’s Christina or perhaps Hahn. Those ladies are the intense power and amazingness that I think of when I hear the word asperger’s.
Dear Ms. McDonnell,
I am writing to share some thoughts about the portrayal of a surgeon with Asperger’s Syndrome on GA. I am hopeful you will have a moment to consider some feedback from someone with a child who suffers from PDD/NOS, an Autism Spectrum Disorder similar to Asperger’s. I have great respect for you as an artist and believe you are truly concerned with giving an authentic performance, but I am concerned the writers are somewhat off-base with their portrayal of your character, Virginia Dixon. Most high functioning people with Asperger’s Syndrome only exhibit one or two characteristics on the list of criteria commonly used when determining a diagnosis. Typically, these include difficulty picking up on social cues, and a sense of awkwardness in social situations. However, for those individuals who have lived with this condition their entire lives through adulthood, these symptoms, while still detectable, are quite mild. One might even come to the conclusion that the
individual in question was simply a shy or “bookish” type person. Considering this character has evidently made it through medical school and residency to go on and become a preeminent surgeon in her field, one would expect she had honed her interpersonal skills well beyond what has been portrayed on GA. The portrayal of your character in 508 as someone who’s behavior is so weird and bizarre as to merit eye-rolling and derogatory commentary by other characters to whom she is introduced is, based upon my personal experience, inaccurate, and grossly exaggerated. It also perpetuates stereotypes and further objectifies those with mental disabilities as outsiders. Shonda Rhimes is a gifted and successful writer with you, a highly skilled actress in her midst. Hopefully, producers, writers and actors will work together to bring integrity to this character and portray her in an authentic and educated manner. My autistic daughter and I thank you! Sincerely, Jodi Zajkowski
After reading all of these comments, I feel like nothing. The character of Dr. Dixon, I have been told, is me. My family was very eager to tell me. She acts like me. But you people hate her and call her a character. That says the same about me and people like me. Just because we are not like all of you. You are all mean, evil people and I don’t want to read this magazine or come to this website anymore. So much mean people everywhere.

I do like dr. Dixon, and I don’t think she is mean. She’s just straight when she say things. She’s honest, and I feel kinda sad for her sometimes because no one seems to understand her..
Though I guess that would be impossible when you live here, in Holland. But she’s just great ^-^
And I really like Mary McDonnell! Wish I could just meet her one day
