Scoop: ABC Wants More 'Samantha Who?'

Samanthawho_lABC is going (almost) all the way with Samantha Who?

An ABC insider confirms that the network has ordered seven additional episodes of the sophomore comedy, bringing the total number of eppys produced to 20.

For the record, that’s two episodes shy of the traditional full season order. Why so stingy? The ABC source says the net has so much midseason inventory (i.e. Scrubs, According to Jim) that it didn’t need the full 22.

So far this season Sam Who? has averaged a so-so 10.5 million viewers behind Dancing With the Stars. Although that’s down compared to last year, the show still wins its time slot among women 18-49.

If ABC renews one more thing and not “Pushing Daisies,” I might go crazy.

  • marc

    what about Life On Mars?

i’m so glad to hear this. i love christina applegate and i’m glad her little show is getting more time to find its footing. the one that aired monday was promising with all the “bad same” flashbacks. (applegate seems better with serious moments than screwball comedy.)

OMG! Yay!!! Im SOOOOOOOO happy! I love Samantha Who!!!!

  • Sarah

From the very first episode, I have been in love with this show! Christina Applegate is pretty great, but her mom! Jean Smart is so funny! She didnt get that Emmy for nothing!

Ugh. Samantha Who bleeds viewers and loses 7-8 million of its lead-in, and it gets renewed. Pushing Daisies is kept off the air for 9 months (unlike Sam Who which was back after the strike ended), it leads off the night, and now it might be cancelled? Bull.

Ugh, I understand that ABC gives Samantha Who the (almost) full season order, but if they decide to renew more shows that are so-so and leaves us hanging in the air concerning Pushing Daisies I am gonna freak.

What about Pushing Daisies? C’mon ABC!

  • CandyMaize

I’m glad to read that they got add’l eps ordered (close enough to be full season).

  • Shari

    I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!
But ABC better not cancel Daises or Dirty Sexy Money! It’s their own fault the shows’ ratings are down and they need to hang in there and support those fledgling babies the way NBC has with 30 Rock, Heroes & Friday Night Lights!

  • vicki

i hope it does get picked up but i really hope pushing daisies and diry sexy are also renewed.
pushing daisies is the most original show in tv!

  • David

Pushing Daisies is dead, live with it. PD also gets 5 million less viewers than SW. Even if PD was near Dancing it still wouldn’t be watched.
However can we all agree that According to Jim needs to be canceled, again, now.

Success in the national tv ratings for the big four networks means you have to pull in at least 10 million viewers. Eli Stone, Life On Mars, Dirty Sexy Money, and Pushing Daises are all within striking distance of that magic audience number. I hope all of those great shows continue to grow to become hits. The one that most concerns me is Eli Stone. So often it boggs down after 30 minutes and people turn away, but the other three are starting to deliver a solid hour of entertainment. As stated, with bonafied hits set to be added to their schedule(The Bachelor, LOST) and potential hits waiting in the wings, the clock is ticking for the current bubble shows to develop an audience.

Smart move…This show is consistently funny and Christina Applegate is a charmer. Sam Who is one of very few series that I even bother to tune in to this fall.

  • Arod

This show is cute & pleasant enough and Christina is so charming, but I don’t find the show itself that funny, never laugh out loud (plus weak link Esposito overacts, a little irritating). Anyway I’m happy for all the people who love it, that it got renewed, but if I’d had to pick an abc show to get picked up, my vote would go to Dirty Sexy Money. That show is so full of good lines, the writing is excellent. Every episode seems to fly by in 15 minutes.
