The CW’s decision to contemporize Melrose Place for today’s audiences underscores the latest trend in TV: developing tried-and-true titles in hopes of overcoming marketing challenges. Now that NBC and The CW have succeeded (at least for now) in getting reboots of Knight Rider and 90210 off the ground, CBS is considering remakes of two popular crime series from the ’70s: The Streets of San Francisco and Hawaii Five-O, for next fall. Ed Bernero (Criminal Minds) is writing the Five-O script, while Sheldon Turner (The Longest Yard) and Robert Port (Numb3rs) will attempt to update Streets by focusing on the city’s gay population. Meanwhile, The CW is currently on the lookout for a writer with a twisted enough imagination to re-create the legendary Melrose madness.
