Ratings: Anthony Edwards resuscitates 'ER,' CBS wins another Thursday

Anthonyedwards_l
Thank you, Anthony Edwards! So goes what must be a common refrain over at NBC, after the star’s return to ER boosted the show’s ratings on Thursday. From 9 p.m. to 10 p.m., the medical drama averaged 9.8 million viewers, up from 8.6 mil a week ago — the biggest week-to-week gain of any series on the night.

Otherwise, things remained largely unchanged from last Thursday. CSI was once again an easy winner among total viewers, with 18.9 mil (up from 18.2 mil), and its time-slot rival Grey’s Anatomy walked away with the 18-49 demo (the ABC medical drama also ranked No. 2 overall for the evening, with 15.7 mil).

CBS was the most watched network on Thursday, once again (is there an echo in here?), with an average of 14.5 mil pairs of eyeballs. All three of the network’s shows saw ratings increases from last week: In addition to CSI‘s growth, Survivor: Gabon was up a million to 13 mil at 8 p.m. and Eleventh Hour drew 11.7 mil (it boasted 10.9 mil viewers last week) at 10 p.m. Second-ranked ABC saw sweet returns for Ugly Betty (9.2 mil up from 8.9 mil) at 8 p.m., Grey’s Anatomy (which was down just 100,000 watchers from last week), and Life on Mars (up 200,000 to 8.9 mil) at 10 p.m. That left NBC a distant third, despite ER‘s success, with My Name Is Earl up slightly to 7 mil viewers at 8 p.m., but Kath & Kim (5.1 mil at 8:30 p.m.), The Office (8.2 mil at 9 p.m.) and 30 Rock (7.5 mil at 10 p.m.) all down a bit.

Back-to-back episodes of Fox’s Kitchen Nightmares
drew 4.6 mil people at 8 p.m. and 4.9 mil at 9 p.m. (last week, a
single installment of the show was caught by 4.7 mil viewers). And the
CW’s Smallville (4.4 mil at 8 p.m., down just 100,000) and Supernatural (3.9 mil at 9 p.m., up from 3.2 mil) stayed steady.

E.R is so tired. Is it surprising that people tuned back in to watch a character that had died?
Lots of people watch Knight Rider too but…

It was nice to see Edwards again — plus it was a GREAT episode – very well done – just like the good ol’ days!!

Was Smallville and Supernatural repeats last night? Because when I went to watch them tonight the Jets game was on my tape.

Loved seeing Edwards again. And I thought that the story tied in nicely not some stupid seeing ghosts stuff (won’t mention what show that is on). But I also loved seeing some of the other departed regulars like Jerry and the obnoxious Dr. Romano, that was another bonus. It is sad to see ER go, but I am very happy about the way they are bringing back the old cast to send it on it’s way in style.

Johnny, in some areas, the game preempted Smallville, but the show should be airing at 6 pm on Saturday on your CW station. Hope that helps.

after all these years it was so great to see Edwards back on-screen and the apperances by Laura Innes, Paul McCrane and Eriq Lasalle were priceless! not to mention ABRAHAM BENRUBI!

Very well done episode. The parallel storyline vehicle was a terrific way to bring the old characters in for a fond goodbye. Good to see them all again.

The ER episode was amazing. Actually shed a real tear as I watched this poor lady lose her son and blame herself for his loss. Seeing Anthony Edwards come back and reprise Dr. Green and show the pain he was in towards the end reminded me of how good ER used to be. Thank you for the memories ER… was great to come back and watch…

Johnny, Smallville and Supernatural were prempted, but will be shown this afternoon 2-4 pm on WPIX ch. 11.

    this is a good season

Unfortunately, with Smallville & Supernatural pre-empted in some markets for football … those aren’t the ‘real’ numbers for them (those numbers include the people watching football). So their numbers will be adjusted (again – just like what happened last week).

I’m so thrilled to see a strongly performing Smallville. The show was such a drag last year, but this season every episode is better than the last. I’m so thankful the CW kept the faith with this one! KEEP IT UP!

  • Rose

I was disappointed. I don’t really care for Anthony Edwards and only tuned in to see Laura Innes. To see her for only 5 seconds seems like a real waste! Why bring her back just for that? Reminds me of why I stopped watching this show to begin with!
