'Kath & Kim' gets full-season order

Tags:

It’s hardly attracting the masses–it’s barely even cracking the top 50–but Kath & Kim is here to stay, at least for the season. NBC announced that it has picked up the back nine episodes of the comedy that stars Molly Shannon and Selma Blair as an eccentric mother-daughter duo. After four weeks, the comedy has held onto 100 percent of its adults 18-49 lead-in from My Name is Earl (2.6 rating/6 share) and is averaging 6 million viewers.

NBC has already ordered a full season of Knight Rider, the kitchy redux of the ’80s drama. It has averaged 7.4 million viewers. The net has yet to announce, however, whether it will pick up the back nine episodes of My Own Worst Enemy starring Christian Slater. The drama has only averaged 6.5 million viewers and is ranked No. 63, but that’s still better than Kath & Kim, which is ranked No. 65.

'Heroes' loses two of its own heroes

A major development to report from the set of NBC’s Heroes: EW.com has learned that co-executive producers Jeph Loeb (left) and Jesse Alexander, two of the show’s most instrumental writer/producers, are leaving the three-year-old series. Their departure comes at a watershed moment for Heroes, which has taken a serious hit in the ratings amid complaints by critics and fans alike that the show has lost its zeitgeist-tapping appeal. The drama is averaging 9 million-plus viewers this season, down from last year’s 11.6 million average.

Loeb and Alexander are celebrities in their own right among the fanboys. Loeb is an author of many comic books, including Batman, The Hulk, and Superman for All Seasons, which inspired the creation of Smallville. Loeb joined the then-WB drama in its second season. Alexander was previously a co-executive producer on Lost and Alias. It’s unclear whether Heroes creator/executive producer Tim Kring will replace the two writer/producers.

McCain is winning as 'SNL' host

Tags:

John McCain wasn’t as much of a draw as his running mate Sarah Palin, but his appearance on last night’s Saturday Night Live still helped the late-night show soar to new heights. The installment that featured a special appearance by McCain and his wife Cindy — along with Tina Fey as Palin and host Ben Affleck — averaged a 9.0 rating/20 share in 56 local markets metered by Nielsen. That’s the second-highest performance in overnights for SNL since December 1997, second only to Palin’s appearance on Oct. 18 (10.7/24) which featured Josh Brolin as host. Last night’s telecast opened with McCain and Fey’s Palin hosting an infomercial for QVC. Unlike Palin’s appearance from two weeks back, McCain made a lot more jokes at his own expense, as well as his competitor’s. American Idol winner David Cook was the night’s musical guest.

After seven original episodes this season, SNL is averaging 7.6/18 in metered markets, up 69% versus the 4.5/11 the show was averaging at this point last year after four originals. SNL premiered two weeks earlier this season to take advantage of interest in the presidential campaign. Final numbers for SNL will be released on Nov. 6 — the day after the election.
