Fred Thompson is making good on his threat promise to return to acting. The former U.S. senator, whose presidential dreams went up in smoke earlier this year, has landed a guest stint on ABC’s out-of-this-world drama Life on Mars, sources confirm to me exclusively. He’ll play the NYPD’s chief of detectives in a February episode.
In other Mars news, producers are currently casting the never-before-seen daughter of Harvey Keitel’s character. Interested actresses should be in their mid-30s, beautiful, confident, and be willing to work long hours alongside Harvey Keitel.
Reminder: Life on Mars moves to Wednesdays at 10 pm/E.T. following Lost beginning Jan. 28. If you’re not watching, you should be, dammit!

Woot! Senator Fred got him a new job! Love me some Senator Fred =D
I like the match up of Lost & Life on Mars. Countning the days until Jan. 21st.
I don’t have any interest in watching Grandpa Fred on TV.
You tell em ! This is a great show that does not have enough buzz.
Didn’t he come from Mars in the first place? Nah, I’m excited, I love this show.
Cool. Back before his presdential aspirations caused his exit, I enjoyed him on Law & Order on the occasion that I watched it. Oddly enough, with Life on Mars now backing up Lost, this places him on ABC competing with his old show in the timeslot. Wonder if he thought about that before signing on…
I wish they would stop casting Fred Thompson as a New Yorker.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Charisma Carpenter to be cast as the daughter of Harvey Keitel’s character.
@Barbara Reader…I wish they would stop casting Fred Thompson period. He was dreadful on Law & Order.
Fred can be seen putting Charles Barkley on trial for NBA commentary in TNT ads running currently promoting the new NBA season so his “return” has already begun. Am looking forward to him in LOM
Fred Thompson was so miscast on Law & Order, and will be miscast once again. Never, never would New Yorkers elect a Southerner for local office.
hmmm lemme guess your a lib?!??!
Better Mars than the White House.
Ha! I agree better Mars than White House!
He’s going to be as uninspiring as his speech at the convention last summer . I remain devoted to the show but I’ll fastforward his scenes unless they invole Maya and Sam.
