Exclusive: ABC Family pledges more 'Greek,' 'Lincoln Heights,' cancels 'Kyle XY'

Greakkylexy_l_2
Which do you guys want first — the good news or the bad news?

Okay, the good news it is: ABC Family has ordered additional seasons of Greek and Lincoln Heights.

Now the bad news: Kyle XY has been given his walking papers.

Although a rep for the cable net could not be reached for comment, sources confirm to me exclusively that Greek has been renewed for a 20-episode third season. Additionally, Lincoln Heights has been greenlit for a fourth season, although a specific episode count wasn’t immediately known.

Meanwhile, Kyle XY‘s current 10-episode third season — which debuted on Jan. 12 — will be its last. I’m guessing the show’s dwindling viewership was to blame.

Eulogies on behalf of the Belly Button-less One are currently being accepted in the comments section below.

On the bright side, yay for Greek and that other show I’ve never seen!

Ratings: 'American Idol' swoops in to steal Thursday night

Tagged: ,

American Idol‘s final hour of pre-Hollywood auditions in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and New York City easily dominated a Thursday night mostly filled with repeats. While it fared slightly worse than Wednesday’s airing, Idol was still the clear winner. In the 9 o’clock hour, CSI came in a close second for the evening — it seems people just can’t get enough of their crime show procedurals. The premiere of Fox’s Hell’s Kitchen cooked up some decent numbers (11.1 million), right behind CSI. Private Practice lost some of its momentum from last week’s season high of 9.6 million viewers, falling to 7.7 million. But CBS’ Eleventh Hour continued to do well, coming in third place for the evening with 12.7 million viewers.

'Prison Break' scoop: What's T-Bag's endgame?

Tagged:

It’s a question that has to be on the minds of Prison Break producers as they make their way toward the show’s series finale: How do you redeem one of the most despicable, soulless characters in TV history in just a handful of episodes?

It’s easy, says T-Bag’s portrayer, Robert Knepper, in the exclusive video interview below: You don’t.

Ratings: Fox rules Wednesday with 'American Idol,' 'Lie To Me'

Lietome_l
The second episode of Fox’s new psychodrama Lie To Me stayed mentally tough, losing just 8 percent of its healthy debut audience from last week. Add Lie‘s 9 p.m. win over ABC’s Lost to good numbers for everyone’s favorite karaoke show American Idol, and Fox ended Wednesday night with more viewers than any other two networks combined. Not bad for a net that airs its news at 10. CBS’ repeats performed well, particularly CSI: NY, which won the 10 p.m. hour against new offerings from NBC and ABC.

'House' scoop: Is 'gay sex scene' behind Thirteen backlash?

Tagged:

Olivia Wilde thinks she knows the real reason her numerically-monikered House alter ego elicits such a negative reaction from some fans. “I think it’s because she had a gay sex scene [this season],” she confesses. “I’ve got to be honest with you, I think that’s what it is.”

Is she serious? Or is she just joshing? They say the [video] camera never lies, so it’s a good thing our entire conversation was caught on tape.

Marie Osmond: Coming (back) to a TV near you

Tagged:

Stations in more than 70 percent of the country — including WNBC in New York and KTLA in Los Angeles — have agreed to pick up Marie Osmond’s hour-long talk show for the fall. In a statement, Osmond said her daytime yakker Marie, which will air five days a week, "will truly reflect my personality — optimistic, humorous, adaptable, inquisitive, concerned and rarely predictable."

Osmond, who appeared on Dancing With the Stars in 2007, continues to perform in Las Vegas with her brother Donny, and is about to publish her second book, Might  as Well Laugh About it Now, which will hit bookstores in April.

Ratings: 'American Idol' wins Tuesday

Filed under: Television and tagged: , ,

As usual, Fox’s American Idol was Tuesday evening’s top-rated program with 25.2 million viewers. That’s up 11 percent from last Tuesday, when President Barack Obama’s Neighborhood Ball stole some viewers, but still 17 percent below its season premiere. Meanwhile, with 19 million viewers, CBS’ NCIS continued to perform well opposite TV’s top-rated show. Elsewhere in primetime, there was good news for ABC’s Scrubs, which actually grew 11 percent at 9 p.m. and 16 percent at 9:30 p.m., to average above 5 million viewers for the hour. And Fox’s Fringe held strong week-to-week with 12.1 million viewers. Still, that show couldn’t beat the second hour of NBC’s Biggest Loser: Couples, which averaged 12.9 million, or a repeat of TV’s No. 1 new series, CBS’ The Mentalist (15.1 million).

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'Desperate Housewives,' 'House,' 'Battlestar,' 'Lost,' 'Brothers & Sisters,' 'Scrubs,' 'Heroes,' 'Daisies,' 'Ugly Betty,' and more!

Tagged:

Askausiellodempsey_l
Question: Your scoop about the lack of Cameron and Chase in the 100th episode of House really killed me. Out of all the episodes, the two of them deserved to be in that one. It’s like a slap in the face to Jennifer Morrison, Jesse Spencer and their fans. I don’t care what their excuses are. — Jessica
Ausiello:
You know this column is called Ask Ausiello, not Bitch to Ausiello, right? No, seriously, I hear you. I do. But maybe it’ll take some of the insult out of the injury if I mention that although the episode number is significant, the episode itself is not. Series creator David Shore said he resisted outside pressure to make the Feb. 2 outing anything other than a typical House. So it’s not like he made this really special episode and put everyone in it except Jennifer and Jesse. He made a regular episode and put everyone in it except Jennifer and Jesse. See the difference?

Question: This "Chameron" fix you told us about had better be major –
like major-major. Because after reading about their 100th episode diss,
I am pissed! — Greta
Ausiello:
If I oversold it, I have a hunch Jennifer Morrison won’t be
patting me on the head, either. "I’m with the fans these days," she
told us at last week’s 100th-ep blowout. "I find out what’s happening
when you write about it." (Hey, at least she and Jesse Spencer were
invited to that.) So, since I have yet to report which game-changing
event will trigger the new storyline, she was clueless as to what it
might be. So was Spencer, but not for lack of trying. When David Shore
refused to divulge the deets, "I said, ‘Go on and tell me, David, or I
will bash your head in,’" the actor jokes. "He said no, and then we had
a bit of a fight and he cried, and I went, ‘Okay, fine. Have your
little secrets.’"

Question: I heard a character might be leaving House at the end of the season. I’m scared it might be Cuddy. — Maude
Ausiello:
Though exec producer Katie Jacobs played dumb when I asked
her about the rumored departure at press tour, Cuddy ain’t goin’
nowhere. Trust me. That’s not to say that there aren’t big changes
ahead. Hugh Laurie teased, "House undergoes some pretty traumatic stuff
in the last half of the season. Not physical but mental. They have
lined it up for something fairly cataclysmic, but not, cataclysmic just
for the sake of being disastrous, and not just to end the season on a
crazy note." So Marcia Cross isn’t gonna blow up the hospital? Er, no.
"Stuff doesn’t blow up," he promises. "I hope we never blow things up,
ever. This event is sort of contained within House’s head, [but] it is
exciting."

Question: We haven’t seen much of
Wilson lately on House. Do you know if there is anything in store for him? — Morgan
Ausiello:
This certainly has the potential to boost his visibility.

Question: Is there any news on anything Pushing Daisies related? — Eric
Ausiello:
Yes, there are three new developments — and, believe it or not, all of them are positive! 1)
I’m told Warner Bros. will definitely be releasing a season 2 DVD. 2) After undergoing a
major post production tweaking, the series finale is now
a loose-end-tying-up extravaganza. 3) And the inimitable Ellen Greene is in
talks with Heroes to return as Sylar’s mom during May sweeps.

Question: Any news on 30 Rock? — Amy
Ausiello:
Something tells me Tina Fey just saw Benjamin Button: She’s
currently on the lookout for an actor to play a TGS announcer who’s
been struck by lightning a few times. The comedy’s also hiring a bunch of actors to
play GE staffers that Jack has to fire.

Question: For once in your life, give me some Desperate Housewives news! Anything!!! — Chris
Ausiello:
For once? Seriously? Yeah, okay, but just this once.
"Katherine and Mike are going to move in together," Dana Delany
reveals. "That’s huge. We have shot a few episodes of cohabitation
already, and it has been a tremendous amount of fun." So tremendous
that she thinks even a crankypants like you will get a kick out of it,
Chris. "Fans of the show since the beginning will remember that Mike
used to live in the house that I live in now in, so it is a sort of
homecoming for him," the actress notes. "But like all things on
Wisteria Lane, it will have its own set of challenges. We aren’t going
to be living in complete bliss. Susan has issues, for one. And Dave is
still around trying to get revenge."

Question: Any chance Desperate Housewives will fast-forward another five years when this season’s done? — Blaine
Ausiello:
No such luck. "I am not sure how Marc [Cherry, the show's
"community planner," intends] to end the season this year," Dana Delany
hedged, "but I don’t think it will be as dramatic as a five-year jump
forward."

Question: You haven’t commented on United States of Tara! I’d love to know what you think. — Jill
Ausiello:
A wise man once told me, "If you don’t have anything nice to
say, then type it in all caps." I think I’ll follow that advice now:
ME NO LIKE! (And this is coming from someone who worships
both Toni Collette and Juno.)

Question: I seriously hate you… How about some Scrubs scoop? — Teela
Ausiello:
You sweet-talker, you. How’s this? Remember how boss man Bill
Lawrence told us that he’d compromised on the JD/Elliot thing. Well,
now that they’re officially dating again, you’re probably wondering,
"Um, so what was the compromise?" Well, this is it: "The season isn’t
about [them dating]," he tells me. "[We got to] make everyone happy
that wants them to be a couple, [but] I get to win [too, because] it’s
not Ross and Rachel. The rest of the year isn’t, ‘Are we together? Are
we not together?’ It just works because they’re grown-ups, and they
like each other."

Question: Got scoop on Stephanie March’s return to Law & Order: SVU? — Dana
Ausiello:
Only that it will trigger a brief hiatus for the show’s
current ADA, the woefully underused Michaela McManus. In other SVU
news, ex-Soprano Robert Iler guest stars in tonight’s episode, while
Dabney Coleman, Ron Eldard. Burt Young, and Wallace Shawn drop in next
week. And on Feb. 10, former ER doc Alex Kingston plays attorney
Miranda Pond.

Question: When does Saving Grace return? — Barbara
Ausiello:
The second half of season 2 starts March 2. Look for the plot to really start thickening in the third episode (March 16) when
Christina Ricci’s character is revealed to be an IA agent, which
doesn’t sit well with Grace. Meanwhile, Bobby returns after Grace, Ham,
and Butch accidentally blow his undercover gig, and Rhetta decides to
take on Leon Cooley’s case and get him off Death Row. And there’s also this: Holly. Hunter. Naked.

Question: Ausiello, I need some major Big Bang Theory scoop! — Steph
Ausiello:
In the Feb. 2 episode, Penny’s ex-boyfriend, Kurt (Brian
Patrick Wade), comes back, much to Leonard’s extreme displeasure.

Question: Please tell me you have some scoop about the best show on television, Brothers & Sisters. — Cory
Ausiello:
Justin and Rebecca’s relationship will self-destruct by
season’s end — right around the time Rebecca and Ryan start cohabitating. Coincidence?

Question: Brothers & Sisters show-runner Monica Breen told you that
Jason Lewis’ return as Chad will have an "unexpected" effect on Kevin
and Scotty’s relationship. Is Jason Lewis Saul’s
boyfriend? –  Sasha
Ausiello:
He sure isn’t. But you’re sort of on the right track.

Question: Is Balthazar Getty leaving Brothers & Sisters or not? — Claire
Ausiello:
Depends what you mean by the word leaving. Yes, Getty will
depart in April when Tommy gets into some legal trouble and skips town,
but it’s the producers’ hope that he will return as an occasional guest
star next season. "We intend for Balthazar to be a part of the show
through its entirety," says e.p. Monica Breen. "But to the extent that Tommy
figures into the daily lives of the Walkers, that remains up for
grabs."

Question: I’ve loved your relentless search for the truth about the
future in-bed togetherness of Bones and Booth. But do you hear anything
about the future of my favorite Bones couple, Angela and Hodgins? –
Janie
Ausiello:
Good news: An annoying roadblock that answers to the name Roxie has been officially cleared, so says series creator Hart Hanson.

Question: Bottom-line the Ugly Betty situation for us. How dire is it? — Gordon
Ausiello:
Not nearly as dire as I first thought. Shortly after my story
posted, several very trustworthy ABC insiders came forward to assure me
that the perception is much worse than the reality in this case. The
reality, they say, is it’s highly unlikely that Betty will be forced to
close out its third season in June, as the network’s ominously worded
press release seemed to suggest. And regarding next season, two of the
three sources I queried seemed very confident that Betty would be back next
season. The third one ignored that part of my question and proceeded to pump me for scoop on House. Bottom line: Phew.

Question: Please give us some scoop on Ugly Betty. Will Betty have any romance in the near future? — Jeni
Ausiello:
Do you consider Feb. 19 to be in the near future? ‘Cause
that’s when Daniel Eric Gold debuts as Betty’s new love interest, Matt.
Word is the YETI hottie is concealing a major secret, and it’s
not that he’s loaded (although he isn’t terribly forthcoming about that bit,
either).

Question: Got any Entourage scoop? — Kelly
Ausiello:
According to Kevin Connelly, season 6 will be all about "the
guys around Vince figuring out what they’re going to do with the rest
of their lives."

Question: Any Battlestar Galactica spoilers? — Paul
Ausiello:
This Friday’s revolt-themed episode is the best of the season
so far. Of course, it certainly couldn’t be worse than the painfully
tedious and self-indulgent art film that we had to sit through last
week. What a colossal dud that was. But back to this week’s ep,
Adama and Roslin finally decide to take their relationship public when
they suck face in front of the entire fleet. The PDA is greeted
with a mix of "awwwws" and "ewwwws."

Question: What is the cast of Private Practice going to do over at Grey’s? — Kelly
Ausiello:
Filling Mer’s pretty little head with shocking stories
about Derek’s early days ** * **********. And believe me, that’s not a
good thing. Funny? Yes. Good? No.

Question: It’s been reported that both Hayden Panettiere and Ali Larter have asked off Heroes. What’s the scoop? –  Aled
Ausiello:
I can confirm that one of those actresses has indeed asked to
be released from her contract. But I hear NBC is unlikely to allow it.

Question: I’m borderline crazy addicted to Lost, and would very much
[twitch] appreciate a scoop on any recent news [twitch]! — CJ
Ausiello:
Listen up, Crazy: In last week’s AA, I told you that Team Darlton had been
quietly searching for a "younger Phillip Seymour Hoffman-type" for a
multi-episode arc this season. Well, in this week’s AA, I’m telling you
who they got: October Road‘s Brad Henke. I can’t say much about his
character, except that he has ties to the mysterious Ilana.

Question: Any scoop on Lauren Graham’s forthcoming ABC pilot? — Kevin
Ausiello:
Everything you’ve always wanted to know about Graham’s ABC
comeback but were afraid to ask can be found via this link. You’ll also find her thoughts on a Gilmore movie and her highly anticipated Broadway debut. What you won’t find, however, is
the following quote about the demise of her NBC development deal last year, and
that’s because I saved it just for AA! "It was [a casualty of the]
strike, really," she said. "I really liked them. I love their comedies.
But during the time before the strike, nothing had gelled. And nobody
knew how long that was going to last. I couldn’t meet with writers,
which is what I was being paid to do. It was a very amicable split."

That’s a wrap! Send questions/anonymous House tips/suggestions of
things to do in Portland, OR., this weekend to ausielloscoop@ew.com

Ratings: 'American Idol' wins the week with a one-two punch

Tagged: ,

Americanidols8_l
With no big football games to compete against, Fox’s American Idol resumed its normal position atop the ratings for the week ending Jan. 25. As usual during this time of the year, the reality-music show occupied the top two slots, with the Wednesday airing besting the Tuesday episode by 3.1 million viewers. Compared to last year during the same week, last Tuesday’s show was down by 6.5 million, or 22 percent; the Wednesday telecast wasn’t as far off — just 1.2 million, or 4 percent. Next week, however, you can bet that the Super Bowl between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals on CBS will best both episodes of American Idol…combined.

When DVR numbers come in, however, American Idol will likely get a huge boost in its total viewership. And the show is also boosting other programs on Fox. Namely, brand-new crime procedural Lie to Me (No. 12), which premiered to a very healthy 12.4 million in the Wednesday, post-Idol timeslot; and Fringe (No. 15), which returned in the post-Idol Tuesday timeslot with 12 million viewers, a 52 percent boost over the 7.9 million viewers it had been averaging so far this season. Remember that Fox has used Idol to juice promising shows for years — it’s a tactic the network employed to help give Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, Bones, and House legs of their own.

A few specials also made their mark in the top 20 for the week. ABC’s star-studded The Neighborhood Ball: An Inauguration Celebration showed up at No. 11 with 12.6 million viewers, besting all the other networks’ primetime inauguration coverage. And CBS scored with its original movie Hallmark Hall of Fame Presents: Loving Leah, which clocked in at No. 16 with 11.7 million viewers.

Overall, CBS rolled in with 10 shows in the top 20; Fox surprised with six total; and ABC clocked in with four. The football-devoid NBC and the low-rated CW didn’t land anything in the top 20. Surprise, surprise. The week’s full top 20 — complete with total viewerships — is after the jump.

'My Life on the D-List': Kathy Griffin teases season 5

Tagged:

Here come the A-listers to the D-List! Kathy Griffin tells EW.com that Bette Midler will show up for the first episode and other celebs like Lily Tomlin will make an appearance when My Life on the D-List bows on Bravo this summer. “I have to browbeat some A-list stars to come on. It is off the charts,” says Griffin, who spoke to EW.com while attending the recent Producers Guild Awards in Los Angeles. Griffin has reportedly lured Christina Aguilera, Dave Grohl, and Taylor Swift to her show, as well. “My gays are gonna love it.”

Griffin also promises to have fun with a foodie. “We just went and shot with Paula Deen in Savannah. You think, Okay we will go down with her and probably have her teach us how to cook something and it will be fun. But it turns out we had this wild meal and everybody was drunk. People were falling down. It was so much more than I could ever hope for when we planned the segment. It is brilliant. Paula Deen knows how to party let me tell you.” (Reporting by Carrie Bell)

'Quarterlife' creators to pen a series for CBS

Tagged: ,

Quarterlife creators Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick are plotting their return to primetime. Herskovitz has told EW.com exclusively that the team behind Once & Again and thirtysomething sold a drama script to CBS that focuses on a marriage that works. “I still can’t tell you too much,” Herskovitz said while walking the red carpet of the Producers Guild Awards on Jan. 24. “We are hoping to get it in under the wire so we can make it on in the fall. It is just life. We got rid of genre a long time ago. We try to talk about life and not focus on things like [hospitals] or cops.”

Herskovitz has said that he and Zwick plan to continue producing websides of quarterlife, their Internet show about a twentysomething blogger (Bitsie Tulloch). Although NBC canceled it after one week last February, the webisodes averaged a robust 300,000 viewers. (Additional reporting by Carrie Bell)

Ratings: 'The Bachelor' keeps growing

Tagged:

Now in its zillionth season, ABC’s The Bachelor boasts an audience that’s actually growing. (Most series see their viewership totals shrink after several years.) According to preliminary overnight ratings, the reality dating show averaged 10.6 million viewers on Monday night, an increase of 600,000 from the previous week. Meanwhile, the second half of NBC’s Mira Sorvino/Scott Foley (now there’s a dynamic duo!) miniseries, The Last Templar, lost 1.6 million of its Sunday audience. Elsewhere, Fox continued to have success on Monday with strong showings for House (15.6 million) and 24 (12.2 million).

The Swell Season forge onward despite breakup

Swellseason_lOscar-winning Once couple Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova’s romantic relationship has ended after nearly two years together. But the pair, who are currently touring together as The Swell Season, are keeping their musical partnership going on stage and in the studio.

“It can be confirmed that we are indeed moving forward on honoring those tour dates as well as completing the new record which they began working on last year,” North American manager Howard Greynolds tells EW via email, adding that their new album “is due to be completed in the next two months and is currently scheduled for an August release date.” The Swell Season begins a three-day stint at Australia’s Sydney Festival tonight; next week they are scheduled to play a date in Hansard’s native Dublin.

Hansard told the Sydney Morning Herald this week that he and Irglova remain “really good friends”: “[Dating] was a very necessary part of our friendship but I think we both concluded that that wasn’t what we really wanted to do. So we’re not together now.”
