'General Hospital': Exclusive video clip of Natalia Livingston's return

Categories: Casting, Television

Fans
are pretty excited about actress Natalia Livingston’s return to General Hospital
this week after her character was killed off in 2007. (Though, she did appear on the show in Nikolas’ visions through May 2008. It’s a soap. Go with it.) So hopefully, they won’t be too confused when Livingston shows up as a woman
named Rebecca, who is very different from the beloved Emily Quartermaine she played for five
years. No one will be as confused as the good residents of Port Charles; poor
Nikolas (Tyler Christopher) must be wondering if his tumor’s returned when his dead fiancee seemingly appears across the room in this exclusive first look at a scene from the Jan. 15 episode.

'Grey's Anatomy' exclusive: Melissa George checks out

Categories: Grey's Anatomy

Melissageorge_lAs I taught you long ago, the Golden Globes aren’t so much a showcase for award-worthy talent and polarizing fashion as they are a hotbed for exclusive prattle. To wit, shortly after Sunday’s kudosfest ended, Melissa George presented me with a doozy of a scoop: She’s leaving Grey’s Anatomy, STAT.

“It was my choice,” the actress-slash-Golden Globe nominee (for In Treatment) confirmed to me at HBO’s red-hot after-party, held poolside at the Beverly Hilton. “My last day of work is Tuesday.”

But lest you think this is yet another in a long line of rocky Grey’s exits (see also: Isaiah Washington, Brooke Smith, possibly T.R. Knight), George, who joined the ABC soap last November as Mer’s maybe-gay BFF, is leaving on the best of terms.

“I love the show so much,” she gushes. “I’ve made some beautiful friends. I love T.R. Knight. I love Patrick Dempsey, Justin Chambers… I adore Ellen Pompeo. I think she’s a strong, incredible woman. And Katherine Heigl is the most beautiful creature on Earth.”

Then, um, why leave? George says she simply wants to “do something else.” Already? Well, a Grey’s insider does suggest that the parting of the ways was more mutual than simply the actress’ choice. “Melissa’s arc came to a natural end. Everyone at the show adores her. We’re genuinely sad to see her go.”

George’s initial deal called for her to appear in roughly 8-11 episodes with an option to become a series regular, like Kevin McKidd. But her Sadie had a much more rocky introduction than the Iraq doc, what with the self-mutilation and ambiguous sexuality. The latter characteristic was especially ill-timed coming off of Hahn’s controversial exit. “The character was cursed from Day One,” sniffs an ABC source. “She was very difficult to root for.”

George concedes that Sadie was unconventional, even by Grey’s standards. But recent episodes had revealed a calmer, gentler side to her. “When you take out your insides and you’re hitting on every guy and girl in the hospital… you have to pull back,” her portrayer suggests. “She’s a doctor. You have to be professional. For her, she had to stop doing that or else she would’ve been kicked out.”

Is that a tease for Sadie’s exit? George won’t say, but she reveals that “it won’t be a big send-off, but it’s really cool what they do.”

In other words, Sadie won’t be banished to the parking lot with Hahn.

So what do you think, Grey’s fans? Happy to see Sadie go? I am. As much as I love George, her character wasn’t working for me. Do you agree? Disagree? Sound off below, and be sure to check back often, as this was just the first of the Globes scoops I dug up! (Wednesday’s AA is going to be massive. Seriously.)

Mommie Dearest — Faye Dunaway!

Sources confirm to me exclusively that the Oscar winner (for Network), who hasn’t taken a small-screen gig since a 2006 episode of CSI, has signed on for at least one episode of Grey’s Anatomy to air in February. She’ll play a renowned doc at the hospital who crosses paths with the Chief, Cristina and Owen.

What do you think? Is this the coolest piece of stunt casting so far this year? Hit me below!

Ratings: BCS Championship Game scores on Thursday night

Categories: TV Biz, TV Ratings

Football rules! College’s biggest game of the year — the BCS Championship Game, where the Florida Gators took down the Oklahoma Sooners, 24-14, for the national title — easily cleaned up on Thursday night, according to fast overnight ratings. For the three hours it aired in prime time, the showdown drew an average of 24.1 million viewers and easily won ever hour.

The rest of the evening, which was fairly evenly split between repeats and fresh episodes, was rather lackluster. At 8 p.m., a repeat of CBS’s CSI: NY was the top show besides football and topped new episodes of ABC’s Ugly Betty and NBC’s My Name is Earl. During the 9 p.m. hour, ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy — which drew 13.7 million viewers — easily beat repeats of CBS’s CSI, NBC’s The Office, and The CW’s Supernatural. But Grey’s take was down 1.6 million from the last new episode, which aired in early December. You can bet that some of that decline was due to the dominating BCS football game on Fox. Meanwhile, at 10 p.m., ABC’s Private Practice did not wow now in its new day and time slot, as it drew just 9 million and managed to retain only 66 percent of Grey’s Anatomy’s audience, despite being a spin-off of the show.

Exclusive: 'Heroes' stages 'Pushing Daisies' reunion!

Categories: Heroes, Pushing Daisies

Swoosiekurtzheroes_lIt’s not exactly a Pushing Daisies resurrection, but I’ll gladly take it (and so should you): Swoosie Kurtz is reuniting with her former Daisies boss, Bryan Fuller, on Heroes!

Kurtz’s spokesperson confirms to me exclusively that the actress has inked a deal to guest star in an April episode of Heroes written by, yep, Fuller himself!

“Bryan wrote the part specifically for her,” says Kurtz’ spokesperson of her character, Millie, an old society friend of Angela Petrelli’s. “It’s a really fun role.”

As of now, Kurtz is signed for one episode, but there’s definite recurring potential — particularly if NBC renews Heroes for a fourth season (as many expect it will).

Heroes‘ Fuller-infused fourth volume, “Fugitives,” kicks off on Feb. 2.

Meanwhile, there’s still no news as to when or where ABC will air Daisies final three episodes — and, in this case, no news is definitely bad news.

Not cool, ABC. Not cool at all.

However, the Kurtz/Fuller reunion on Heroes? Very cool. You with me on both counts? Sound off in the comments!

Casting scoops on 'True Blood,' 'NCIS,' 'Eleventh Hour,' 'Numb3rs,' and Zach Braff!

Categories: Casting Scoops

Scrubsbloodreaper_l
Ladies, gents, and Ausholes, it’s with tremendous pride and excitement that I give you the very first "Casting Scoops" roundup of 2009. Enjoy!

•    File this under "S" for Stuff That Doesn’t Suck: True Blood is resurrecting Sookie’s Gram (played by the sublime Lois Smith) in season 2! And by "resurrecting" I mean "returning in newly-created flashback scenes!" Still bloody fangtastic if you ask me!

•     CBS’ freshman sorta-hit Eleventh Hour is adding a new agent later this season played by Omar Benson Miller (Miracle at St. Anna). His character, an FBI trainee by the name of Felix, is eager to join Agent Young’s team. Miller is booked for a minimum of three episodes.

•    Reaper‘s wickedly funny devil, Ray Wise, is briefly retiring his pitchfork to guest on a February ep of Numb3rs. He’ll play a jury consultant for a defendant which Robin, Don and co. are trying to convict of murder.

•    NCIS is delving into the personal life of Director Vance (Rocky Carroll). According to a CBS insider, producers are introducing his never-before-seen wife and children later this season. Casting is underway.

•    If you blink while watching Worst Week‘s Feb. 9 season finale there’s a very good chance you’ll miss Zach Braff, who makes a split-second cameo. CBS’ freshman comedy was shooting on Scrubs‘ vacant hospital set the same day Braff was there looping dialogue for an upcoming episode. "He appears very briefly in the background of a scene," says a source. "He just did it for fun."

Ratings: Barbara Walters' 'Patrick Swayze: The Truth' sets ABC free

Categories: TV Biz, TV Ratings

ABC’s Barbara Walters Special Patrick Swayze: The Truth was Wednesday night’s most-watched show in a night peppered generously with reruns. (Check out Ken Tucker’s recap and watch a clip of Swayze and Walters over at EW.com’s Watching TV blog.) Still, CBS drew in the most total viewers for the evening, combining its two-hour telecast of the People’s Choice Awards with strong performances from repeats of its two half-hour sitcoms, The New Adventures of Old Christine and Gary Unmarried. The CW’s new reality series Fear Is Real (whose opening credits feature both a stuffed rabbit that’s supposed to look menacing and a contestant named “Melyssa,” and that’s as far as I got) debuted with 2.4 million viewers. The network’s most recent new series, Stylista, debuted at 2.5 million.

Exclusive 'Gossip': Nate's getting a cousin!

Categories: Gossip Girl

Chacecrawford_l
Gossip Girl is wisely expanding Chace Crawford’s enviable gene pool in the form of a cousin for Nate.

The yet-to-be-cast character is in his 20s and described as wealthy,
confident, politically-minded and — all together now — extremely
good-looking.

But before you go fixing him up with Blair, you should
know that cuz is married. You should also know that his name is Kip
Vanderbilt, so brace yourselves for the inevitable “Anderson Cooper
cameo” rumors. But all signs are that Kip is not a descendent of that
Vanderbilt family. For starters, Kip’s dad’s name is William, not
Cornelius.

Casting suggestions for Kip? Spill ‘em below!

'90210' scoop: Tori Spelling in final talks to rev up Bev

Categories: 90210 Casting News!

Torispelling_l
I’d love to say I hate to say “I told you so,” but who are we kidding? I love to (and I think perversely, you kinda like it when I do, too). And back in November I told you that by the end of 90210 V. 2.0′s freshman year Tori Spelling would likely be back among the fold as former virgin Donna Martin. Now, a show rep confirms that Spelling is in “final negotiations” to return for multiple episodes, adding that her deal could close as early as today.

Reportedly, a big point of contention for Spelling, who’s currently in Vancouver shooting her big Smallville return, was the threat of crossing paths again with sworn frenemy Shannen Doherty. But since the artist formerly known as Brenda Walsh has wrapped for the season, the set will be a Shan-free zone when La Spelling reports for duty on the last few eps.

So whad’ya think, folks? Are you psyched that Donna will once again be walking the halls of West Beverly High? Or are you just bummed that David Silver (the notorious BAG) won’t be joining her? Sound off below! (Additional reporting by Andy Patrick)

Exclusive: 'Sex' symbol Jason Lewis returns to 'Brothers & Sisters'

Categories: Brothers & Sisters

Brotherssisters_lKevin and Scotty are about to encounter the biggest threat to their marriage since Prop 8: The return of Jason Lewis!

A Brothers & Sisters insider confirms to me exclusively that the Sex and the City vet has inked a deal to reprise his role as Kevin’s ex, closeted actor Chad, later this season.

Quick refresher on Kevin/Chad: Introduced in season 1, a then “straight” Chad met Kevin at the gym and the two started a secret affair. When a gossip site leaked incriminating pics of them shopping for lamps at Ikea, Chad decided to come out publicly, at which point he promptly lost interest in Kevin and the two broke up.

According to a B&S insider, the exes reconnect at a bar and one thing leads to another — although in this case, I’m pretty sure the “thing” it leads to is just some harmless flirting. But I could be wrong.

As of now, Lewis is on board for one episode, which is slated to air in April.

Ratings: 'Scrubs' debuts on ABC to solid ratings

Scrubscourtneycox_l
Clearly, Tuesday is still all about CBS: The Mentalist grabbed a season high 19.6 million viewers and, should overnight numbers hold, also nabbed the title of Night’s Top Program away from its lead-in, NCIS (19.1 million). But figuratively, at least, all eyes were on ABC’s eighth season premiere of the NBC castoff Scrubs. Back-to-back episodes, featuring guest star Courteney Cox (pictured), were seen by 6.8 and 6.6 million people, respectively. That’s shy of its season 7 premiere on ABC (7 million), but above its 7th season average (5.8 million). Though fans are no doubt questioning the comedy’s compatibility with its lead-in, Homeland Security USA (7.8 million), and lead-out, What Would You Do? (7 million), they can take heart in knowing that Scrubs did hit the 18-49 demo rating that creator Bill Lawrence told EW’s Michael Ausiello he believed would keep the network happy. We’ve also received a press release from ABC noting that Scrubs was Tuesday’s No. 1 show among "hard-to-reach men 18-34," and, best of all, our TV critic, Ken Tucker, liked what he saw.

NBC also has reason to smile this morning: The two-hour season premiere of The Biggest Loser: Couples averaged 11.8 million viewers, which matches the December finale of the Families edition (and betters that season’s premiere by nearly four million). Below, the overnight numbers for Tuesday.

For those interested in Monday’s numbers, which were delayed by Nielsen until this morning, the two-hour premiere of The Bachelor averaged 8.7 million viewers. That bests the premieres of the previous Bachelor with Brit Matt Grant (8.6 million) and The Bachelorette with DeAnna Pappas (8.1 million). As for the premiere of ABC’s Ashton Kutcher-Tyra Banks’ produced reality show True Beauty, it held on to 88 percent of its Bachelor lead-in with 7.6 million viewers.

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'Lost,' '24,' 'NCIS,' 'CSI,' 'House,' 'Daisies,' 'Gossip Girl,' 'Smallville,' 'True Blood,' and More!

Categories: Misc.

Ausiellohousecsi_lQuestion: Don’t you ever — ever — go three weeks without a new Ask Ausiello again. Do you hear me? Jacob
Ausiello:
If it’s any consolation, the hiatus hurt you a lot more than it hurt me. Wait, that came out wrong. Actually, no, that’s right.

Question: Any news as to whether Tom Welling has signed on for another season of Smallville? — Scarlett
Ausiello:
Yes, there’s news, and it’s good. Some would even call it, ahem, super. According to a well-placed Smallville insider, Welling is nearing a deal to return for a ninth season. I’m told they’re just ironing out some minor deal points, such as should the Brinks Truck pull into the actor’s driveway, or just unload on the street.

Question: Any major character deaths on Lost this season? — Sophie
Ausiello:
None that I know of, but, after screening the first two eps, it certainly looks like a female cast-member isn’t long for this world. The fact that she was recently cast in a big Hollywood movie doesn’t bode well either. (Doc Jensen’s got more on Lost‘s Jan. 21 premiere!)

Question: Got anything on Lost‘s 100th episode? — Katy
Ausiello:
Paris Hilton’s in talks to make a cameo as a Dharma intern circa 1973. I kid, I kid. I’m told the episode, slated to air this May, won’t feature any special stunts, although it is part of the run-up to the season finale and, well, that in itself is pretty stunty.

Question: I’ll be your friend if you give me some Supernatural scoop. — Shane
Ausiello:
There is a traitor amongst Sam and Dean. Okay, Shane, your first order of business as my friend is to buy me this.

Question: Anything on CSI: Miami? — Tim
Ausiello:
Only that the show is casting a new lab rat who just might become a new recurring techie. According to  my sources, said newbie Dave Benton — a twentysomething who’s like a cross between Dave Navarro and Mr. Wizard — helps Ryan crack a case.

Question: Please tell me ABC will pick up the Bill Lawrence-Courteney Cox comedy Cougar Town. I don’t even know anything about it, but I’ve already decided it’s my new favorite show. — Tony
Ausiello:
Don’t know anything about it? I can help out with that! The single-camera comedy stars Cox as a 40-year-old divorcee who decides to re-enter the dating scene now that her only son has graduated high school. "She’s loosely based on my own mom, because my mom had me when she was very young," explains Lawrence, who will serve as show-runner if ABC gives it the green light. "It’s a very weird dynamic, because they’re essentially contemporaries." And don’t be fooled by the title. Although Cox’s character does have a fling with a young lad in the pilot, the series won’t find her bedding a different Robert Buckley clone every week. "It’s a campy title [but] it’s not a campy show," he says. "It’s set in a small town in Florida and the high school football team is named the Cougars, so we justify it that way."

Question: We haven’t had Ugly Betty scoop in forever! What’s next? — Sidra
Ausiello:
Marc’s getting a new roommate…But the show isn’t adding any new cast-members. Stumped? Head to the comments section and start brainstorming!

Question: Can’t wait for Life on Mars to return. Got anything? — Joel
Ausiello:
Producers are casting the never-before-seen wife of Michael Imperioli’s cop, and if they’re smart, they’ll check Drea de Matteo’s availability STAT. Or they can just take my word for it: She’s free!

Question: 24 season 7 premiere screeners were recently sent out to the press, and I’m pretty sure the mighty Ausiello got one. Mind giving us a tidbit about this weekend’s premiere? — Yong
Ausiello:
If it’s okay by you, I’d rather give you four tidbits, one for each hour of the two-night premiere.

1) Listen closely for the words "deep sky," because one of 24‘s coolest twists ever occurs shortly after they’re uttered.
2) A bombshell secret about Tony Almeida gets revealed around Hour 3: He’s got pectoral muscles for days. Janeane Garofalo even gets to touch one of them!
3) Speaking of Garofalo, her chemistry with doppelganger Mary Lynn Rajskub is so off the charts that there’s buzz Fox may spin them off into their own show. In related news, if I make a wish in Ask Ausiello, it officially qualifies as buzz. Totally true.
4) I’ve come to the conclusion after watching the first four eps that James Morrison is Neil Patrick Harris’ biological father.

Question: Can you please give me scoop on House? I’m dying to know what is going to happens between Thirteen and Foreman after the hiatus. — Cindy
Ausiello:
Trouble in paradise. When Foreman discovers that Thirteen was given a placebo in the Huntington’s clinical trial, he switches her to the real drug behind her back. The truth eventually comes out on Feb. 2 and all hell breaks lose. In the same episode, Cuddy turns the tables on House and tortures him for a change. If you’re a Huddy fan, the episode is like a gift from the TV Gods.

Question: Any new news about the Veronica Mars movie? If not, some Gossip Girl scoop is perfectly acceptable. — Amy
Ausiello:
Gossip Girl scoop it is! Word around the UES is that Serena will soon share something in common with Anne Hathaway. And garnering Oscar buzz ain’t it.

Question: About Lily and Rufus’ kid on Gossip Girl: another site said it was a boy and he died. Is that true? — Hanna
Ausiello:
Only half of it.

Question: I need to know more about Gossip Girl, please! I’ll give my entire Smurf collection! — Ali
Ausiello:
I have a sneaking suspicion that Chuck’s mother is alive. Anyone else share my hunch?

Question: Please sir, can I have some Big Love scoop? — Mary
Ausiello:
The Henrickson’s pool will play host to a suicide attempt early into season 3 (debuting Jan. 18). In other Big news, Heather’s crush on Sarah turns a new shade of awkward when the BFFs end up going to the prom together in the third episode. BTW, based on the first three eps, Big Love remains, IMHO, the most entertaining hour of TV in all the land. Spread the word.

Question: Anything on NCIS‘ Tony? Tony! Tony! Tony! — Katie
Ausiello:
I’m not sure I understand your question. You want scoop on who? Ducky? Well, I don’t have anything on him, so you’ll have to settle for this Tony tidbit: He’s replacing Gibbs as boss! Relax, it’s only temporary. In a February episode, Gibbs puts Tony in charge of the team when a case he once worked on gets reactivated.

Question: What is this I hear about the remaining Pushing Daisies and Dirty Sexy Money episodes airing in the summer? Please tell me it’s not true. — Cliff
Ausiello:
Actually, at this point, we’ll be lucky if they air at all. Episode 11 of Daisies was originally scheduled to air tonight, but, per Bryan Fuller, the network dropped it from the schedule at the last minute. "They are not scheduled to air right now," he sighs, "and that’s all we know." Let’s have a round of applause for network TV!

Question: Any scoop on Grissom’s last episode of CSI? — Nicole
Ausiello:
Just a tip: Set your DVR to record a few minutes past 10 pm on Jan. 15, just as a precaution. You do not want to miss the final scene. Trust me. Also, you’ll want to pick up a copy of the new EW when it goes on sale this Friday. I think you’ll fancy the cover subject.

Question: Do you have any news on One Tree Hill? We heard that Mark Schwahn had asked The CW for a decision on season 7 by 1 January so that he could write an appropriate season ending. — Nathan
Ausiello:
Not Jan. 1, but a decision will be made soon. It’s all about contracts now. The cast only signed six-year pacts, so new deals will have to be brokered. Negotiations are happening as we speak.

Question: I am a Media Buyer and, as God as my witness, Friday Night Lights will be renewed again. I am recruiting the buyers in my office to watch and purchase it. Best show on TV. — Kendra
Ausiello:
Fight the heck on, Kendra. Don’t miss tonight’s penultimate season 3 ep, which features (skip to the last sentence of this answer, non DirecTV subscribers!) the long-awaited Tyra/Landry reunion, as well as a nail-biter of a state championship game.Programming note: FNL‘s NBC run kicks off on Friday, Jan. 16.

Question: Any truth to the rumor that Gregory Itzin (President Logan) is returning to 24? He was recently seen in photos with the 24 cast at Kiefer Sutherland’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony. — Matt
Ausiello:
No truth to the rumor — although the specter of Logan will loom large throughout season 7. But if it’s an Itzin fix you’re itching for, make tracks to CBS’ The Mentalist, where he’s playing the recurring role of Virgil Minelli, the Calif Bureau of Investigation boss.

Question: Any new Heroes scoop? — Caroline
Ausiello:
I’m tempted to tell you who almost beat out Lionel Luthor for the role of Sylar’s pop, but I don’t think you’d believe me.Actually, I know you wouldn’t believe me.

Question: We all know that Lafayette was the best character in Season One of True Blood. How can we make sure Alan Ball brings him back next season? — Brody
Ausiello:
Well, as Ball himself recently reminded me, "Lafayette did die in the books." But, he adds, "That doesn’t mean he won’t be back. Anything’s possible."

Question: What’s the deal with Michelle Forbes’ character on True Blood? Is she Tara’s Demon? How does Sam know her? — Marcy
Ausiello:
The mystery surrounding who (or what) Maryann is will play out front and center in season 2 — and you may not find many clues in the books. "She’s definitely a new kind of supernatural creature in Bon Temps," teases Ball. And as new as "it" is, it’s also old. "Ancient. Ancient," Ball stresses. In other words, not a Cylon. BTW, production on True Blood’s second season begins this week!

Question: The wait for Burn Notice‘s second half of season 2 is killing me. Can you give us any tidbits? — Julie
Ausiello:
How’s this: "I wear less in the Jan. 22 premiere than I’ve ever worn in any episode," Jeffrey Donovan teases. "I actually walk into a pool party in a Speedo." You’re welcome, Julie!

And with that, the first AA of ’09 comes to a close. Send question/anonymous tips/new year’s resolutions to ausielloscoop@ew.com. Love ya, need ya, squeeze ya! (Additional reporting by Lindsay Soll and Andy Patrick)

Ratings: Football and 'Desperate Housewives' score strong weekend numbers

Categories: TV Ratings

Coltschargers_l
TV awoke from its holiday nap Saturday with the San Diego Chargers’ overtime win against the Indianapolis Colts on NBC scoring the best ratings for a primetime Wild Card playoff ever — 23.8 million viewers, according to preliminary Nielsen estimates. Similarly, the Allstate Sugar Bowl won the previous night for Fox, albeit with a much smaller audience of 11.8 million viewers.

On Sunday, primetime finally returned at full force: ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (11 million) and CBS’ Million Dollar Password (10.4 million) vied for 8 p.m. bragging rights, and Desperate Housewives (14.3 million) dominated at 9 p.m. as usual. And at 10 p.m. the Big Three duked it out with close results among ABC’s Brothers and Sisters (9.2 million), CBS’ The Unit (9.7 million), and NBC’s Superstars of Dance (10.1 million).
