'Gossip Girl ' scoop: Krysten Ritter joins spin-off

The CW’s Gossip Girl spin-off has completed its first piece of casting.

Veronica Mars and Gilmore Girls alum Krysten Ritter has been tapped to play Lily’s troubled older sister, Carol, in the offshoot, which chronicles the teen years of Kelly Rutherford’s alter ego.

Described as sweet but a bit of a disaster, Carol is an actress who’s constantly making bad decisions in life and work. Lily ends up moving in with Carol after a falling out with mom and dad.

Circa ’80s Lily and Carol will be introduced in the May 11 episode of Gossip Girl.

Meanwhile, casting for the role of Lily continues. (Psst: If exec producers Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz end up getting their first choice, there will be a lot of very happy Ausholes out there.)

KRISTEN BELL!! Young Lily should be played by our very own Veronica Mars!

  • Katelyn

My first thought was the exact same thing…Kristen Bell!!!!

  • Robert

I think it’d be a tad strange if Kristen Bell was cast as Lily just because she’s the narrator of Gossip Girl. It would almost seem as if Lily was Gossip Girl lol. It would be an awesome actress choice though as long as she still had time to do the Veronica Mars movie!

  • Lee Hernandez

Love her from Gilmore Girls. “boyfriend.” Good casting decision!

  • Lana

That would be too much for me to handle…Kristen Bell narrating Gossip Girl AND starring in the spin off? I get confused easily.

I’m really not intothis whole spinoff idea… to start with we know how Lily ends up so any relationships she gets in we will no are doomed…

  • Jackie

Okay, so I think he’s talking about Kristen Bell, but in my mind that would make Lily Gossip Girl and the worst mother ever

Yuk, I don’t really like Krysten Ritter. Her characters have always annoyed me e.g. Veronica Mars (as Gia), Gilmore Girls (as Lucy) and as the daughter in Til Death. Plus, it seems odd to me that Lily’s older sister doesn’t have lighter coloured features like Lily.

I don’t care if Kristen Bell is Lily or not. I just want to see her as a regular on SOMETHING! The best Heroes episodes over the past two seasons are the ones with Elle in them. Kristin needs a vehicle she can run with – lets get her cast!

    Hoooooribleeee Idea for a show.

  • Mister F

Surely Mr. Ausiello has another fellow actress in mind for 80′s Lily other than Kristen Bell, right? Love her to death, but if that were true, that would be really weird.
First, there’s the issue of the narration of course, and second, Veronica Mars which was canceled on the CW due to “poor” ratings gets canned in favor of deliciously trashy Gossip Girl, a good show, but there’s no contest when it comes down to which show has better role models *cough* it’s not Gossip Girl *cough*.
And for a show like Gossip Girl basically averaging the same number of viewers as Veronica Mars, if Kristen Bell were cast, I’d say that would be a slap to face.

I would love to see Kristen Bell on a more regular basis again, but I would think the height factor could (or at least *should*) be an issue. Lily is tall and modelesque, and KBell is just, well, not (especially when standing beside Krysten Ritter). Anyone have any other Ausholly faves coming to mind?

  • Josh Emerson

Kristen Bell is too successful to go back to starring in a CW show! She just chose to leave an NBC show that has more than double the audience anything on the CW would have. Why would she downgrade like that? She’s also got her film career that is taking off pretty well. There is no way he can be talking about her for this role.

I like Kristen Bell and all but I don’t think she should narrate and be in the spinoff. Plus the only similarity she and Lily have in their feature is the blond hair.

  • Jadee

I like Gossip Girl (if you’d asked me a year ago I would have said I loved it) but I can’t think of any actress who would inspire me to watch the spin off. Lily is not that interesting a character, and the 80s were so ugly in oh so many ways.
