Jimmy Fallon says he's done with acting

Categories: Television

Jimmyfallon_l
Jimmy Fallon, whose film career post-Saturday Night Live has yielded lukewarm results like Fever Pitch and the Queen Latifah action comedy Taxi, tells EW that aside from a small role in Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut, Whip It! (produced by Fallon’s wife, Nancy Juvonen), he’s done with acting for now. So don’t expect the former SNL player and future Late Night
talk show host to be turning up on the big screen anytime soon (not that there are many Fallon fans hankering for a Taxi sequel). Then again, he cautions, he could be swayed to return to acting if a certain Family Ties alum is willing to costar. “Maybe a movie of the week,” jokes Fallon, who starts his new NBC hosting gig on March 2. “See if Meredith Baxter is available. I could really be into that.”

Tina Fey responds to alleged McDonald's product placement on '30 Rock'

Categories: Television

30rocksalmaalec_l
Jack Donaghy’s loving ode to the McFlurry in last night’s episode of 30 Rock has gotten the blogosphere in a tizzy — has Tina Fey’s Emmy-winning sitcom completely sold out to egregious product placement? According to Ms. Fey, the answer is a resounding no. Fey issued this statement to finally put McFlurry-gate ’09 to rest:

“It gives me great pleasure to inform you that the references to McDonald’s in last night’s episode of 30 Rock were in no way product placement.  (Nor were they an attempt at product placement that fell through.)  We received no money from the McDonald’s Corporation.  We were actually a little worried they might sue us.   That’s just the kind of revenue-generating masterminds we are.

Also, the upcoming story line where Liz Lemon starts dating Grimace is just based on a recurring dream I have.

Seriously, though, it’s not product placement.

Also, whoever is writing my Twitter account is pretty funny, but it’s not me.”

'Entourage' exclusive: 'Invasion' babe joins cast

Categories: Entourage

Alexisdziena_lInvasion star Alexis Dziena is getting hooked on E.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that the 24-year-old actress is joining the cast of Entourage as a rather unusual love interest for Kevin Connolly’s Eric.

What’s wrong with her? That’s just it — not a thing. She’s perfect. At least she sounds perfect.

Dziena will play the recurring role of Ashley, a beautiful, funny, smart, grounded, self-assured, non-Hollywood-type who, to everyone’s great surprise, develops an interest in Eric.

There’s got to be a catch, right? Maybe she’s Sloane’s younger sister. Or maybe she has man parts. Or maybe she exists only in his mind.

What do you think the twist is (if there even is a twist)? Place your best guesses in the comments section below and then look for Little Miss Perfect to debut early into Entourage‘s sixth season, which starts production next month and is slated to premiere this summer.

Ratings: 'Survivor' premiere, 'CSI' help CBS win Thursday

Categories: TV Ratings

On Thursday, CBS proved unbeatable once again, thanks to the premiere of Survivor: Tocantins and a new episode of CSI — and despite the fact that the network’s popular new show Eleventh Hour saw a 14 percent decrease from its last new episode. ABC came in second, with strong showings from all of its hour-long programs, especially Private Practice, which gained another million viewers after last week’s impressive ratings. All of NBC’s half-hour comedies, meanwhile, saw an increase from last week, though ER lost a small portion of its viewers.

Chris Brown seeking crisis expert?

Categories: Music Biz

Chrisbrown_l
Multiple sources have confirmed to EW that representatives of Chris Brown are on the lookout for a crisis-management expert to help the pop star rehabilitate his image in light of his Feb. 8 arrest on felony battery charges. Many news organizations have reported that Brown argued with his girlfriend, Rihanna, after a pre-Grammy party, which resulted in both singers canceling their Grammy appearances. The singer and sometime actor turned himself into police on Feb. 8 and was quickly released on $50,000 bond.

Among the experts who have been recommended to Brown’s people were Alan Nierob, the veteran Hollywood publicist who advised Mel Gibson in 2006 after he spewed anti-Semitic comments at an arresting officer during a drunk-driving incident; and Howard Bragman, who repped Isaiah Washington in 2007 after Washington used an antigay slur to refer to costar T.R. Knight on the set of Grey’s Anatomy. EW has confirmed that neither Nierob nor Bragman has been hired — for now.

Meanwhile, Bragman (author of the book Where’s My Fifteen Minutes?) already has a lot to say about Brown’s arrest. Speaking to EW earlier this week, Bragman said Brown should prepare himself for months — even years — of intense scrutiny. The fallout from Brown’s arrest was swift: Wrigley suspended his Doublemint gum ad from airing on TV, the Milk Mustache campaign issued a statement that it was “taking the allegations against Chris Brown very seriously” (though Brown’s ad was already scheduled to end its run this week), and Sesame Street pulled a 2007 episode guest-starring Brown from all future airings. Meanwhile, Rihanna postponed a Feb. 13 concert scheduled in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

“What he is accused of doing is a bad thing -– and I’m talking about that in the court of public opinion,” Bragman said. “The only thing probably worse is murder, rape, and hurting an animal. This isn’t a bong hit like Michael Phelps, which everybody has done. This is serious. What he’s got going for him is that he’s young, talented, likable, and we forgive people. You can go home again, but it takes time. It’s not something you can turn around overnight. He has to strap himself in and be ready for a long ride. It’s not a comfortable ride.”

Ratings: Two-hour 'Idol' takes no prisoners

Categories: Lost, TV Biz, TV Ratings

Fox went with two hours of ratings-winner American Idol last night, and the 9 p.m. hour’s scripted shows took the hit. NBC’s Life lost 30 percent of last week’s audience, while the viewership for ABC’s Lost dipped 10 percent. But it’s not like the time-travel drama’s all washed up ashore like waterloggy Jin. Lost did post its fourth week in a row as Wednesday night’s top-scripted program among Adults 18-49.

Exclusive: USA cancels 'The Starter Wife'

Categories:

Thestarterwife_lUSA Network has filed for divorce from The Starter Wife, citing irreconcilable ratings.

When the Debra Messing-fronted Wife debuted in 2007 as a six-hour miniseries, it attracted more than 5 million viewers and went on to earn 10 Emmy nominations. However, ratings for its 10-episode first season averaged just 2.4 million viewers — a decent number by most cable standards, but not for USA, where its top shows (Burn Notice, Monk) regularly pull in around 6 million.

In an exclusive statement, USA called Starter Wife a “critical and creative success,” and added that the Dec. 12 season finale served as a “satisfying conclusion” to the franchise.

Do you agree? Did Wife‘s climax satisfy you? Are you grateful you got those 10 bonus episodes, or should it have just remained a miniseries? And, putting your agent cap on for a moment, what do you think Messing should do next? Sound off in the comments section!

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'Grey's,' 'House,' 'Big Love,' 'Fringe,' 'NCIS,' '24,' 'Gossip Girl,' 'Friday Night Lights,' 'Heroes,' 'Smallville,' and more!

Categories: Ask Ausiello

Knightduranceweatherly_l

Question: Now that it seems likely that Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight are leaving Grey’s Anatomy, does this mean there’s a chance Isaiah Washington could return as Burke? — Dion
Ausiello:
Dion, listen up, ’cause I’m only going to tell you this once: Um, no. But while we’re on the subject of the looming mass exodus at Seattle Grace, a little birdie at Grey’s confided to me that Shonda Rhimes briefly flirted with the idea of having George develop a sudden interest in Dr. Hunt’s background as an army doc. You thinking what I’m thinking? ‘Cause I’m thinking what better way to get rid of George than to have him join the military and go off to Iraq. It’d be perfect, right? Only trouble is, an ABC insider tells me that story has been scrapped and replaced with "something even better." I’m not sure what that something is, but I have a call into my new BFF James Pickens Jr. to find out!

Question: The Office scoop? — Gerald
Ausiello:
The titles of two upcoming episodes have piqued my curiosity.
One is called "Two Weeks Notice," and the other is called "The New
Boss." My guess? Either Michael is faux bolting Dunder Miff or those titles
herald the arrival of Wire star Idris Elba as the new big shot in
corporate.

Question: Anything good coming up on Ugly Betty that you can tease? — Sandra
Ausiello:
You mean aside from a fourth season? (Phew!) Um, let’s see…
someone will get married, someone will die, and Betty will find herself
with a surprising new boss.

Question: Has Tom Welling signed on for season 9 of Smallville yet? — Pat
Ausiello:
No. I’m not sure what’s taking so long.

Question: Any news from Lois’ big return to Smallville? — Claudia
Ausiello:
It airs March 12. It features a return appearance by Tori
Spelling. It finds Clark revealing his true identity to the world. And
I’m told it will have Lois and Clark fans forgetting Lana appeared in any
episodes at all this season.

Question: I just read that Nicollette Sheridan is leaving Desperate Housewives. Is this true? — Mike
Ausiello:
Perhaps. I, for one, find it curious that ABC is only
confirming that "Edie Britt will be leaving Wisteria Lane." They’re not
saying anything about Nicollette Sheridan. THIS JUST IN: Nic’s rep is
now confirming that she is, in fact, leaving the show. THIS JUST IN: I’m still not convinced.

Question: OMG, the Tony-Ziva tension on NCIS is so hot right now. Got any scoop on these two? — Jackie
Ausiello:
Ziva may want to plant a bug in the interrogation room,
because in the March 17 episode, Tony lets some rather shocking details
about his love life slip while interviewing a woman in custody.

Question: Please tell me Heroes didn’t really kill off Daphne! — Patty
Ausiello:
Heroes didn’t really kill of Daphne — at least not yet.

Question: I really need a Fringe scoop! — Bryan
Ausiello:
You know Olivia’s MIA stepfather? The evil guy who leaves her
creepy birthday cards every year? Well, we’re "most likely" going to
meet him in the flesh before the end of the season, confirms executive
producer J.J. Abrams. "It’s a huge story," he says, "and I don’t want
to rush it." Abrams wouldn’t tell me who’s on his short list to play
the baddie, so I’ll tell you who’s on mine instead: Carnivale‘s Clancy
Brown.

Question: First-time writer. Long-time reader. Looking for scoop on Psych. Totally love that show. For real. — Stef
Ausiello:
This isn’t scoop so much as it is a random tidbit from Super
Bowl weekend: At NBC Universal’s tailgate party, James Roday, Dule
Hill, and Chris Meloni took on Burn Notice‘s Jeffrey Donovan, The
O.C.
‘s Ben Mackenzie, and an unidentified executive’s son in an
impromptu game of pick-up touch football. Team Roday-Hill-Meloni
prevailed by a score of 21-7. And because I know you’ll ask, both
teams kept their shirts on the entire game. "At one point shirts and
skins were suggested," whispers my gridiron mole, "but it was too chilly."

Question: If Friday Night Lights gets picked up for a fourth season, who among the cast will return? — Thomas
Ausiello:
The only locks are the core Taylors (Kyle Chandler, Connie
Britton, Aimee Teegarden) and incoming senior Landry (Jesse Plemons).
Beyond that, exec producer Jason Katims is keeping his options open. "I
want to wait until I get the [fourth season] pickup before I really
decide," says Katims, who cautions fans not to read too much into the
events of the season 3 finale. "Things might change in the time between
the finale and where we start with season 4… The truth is, some
people go off to college and then it doesn’t work out. Something brings
them back to town. And some people never end up leaving town." Cuts will eventually have to be made, Katims concedes. "It’s a phenomenal cast," he
says. "It’s not easy for me to say I’m willing to let go of any of
them."

Question: Since I’m being good and not throwing a fit about Ask
Ausiello moving to Thursdays, can you give up some Big Love scoop? –
Linda
Ausiello:
I’m hereby ordering all Emmy voters to watch the Feb. 22
episode. It finds the entire Henrickson clan embarking on a 2,500 mile
road trip and it easily ranks as the finest hour of television all
season. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll want to throw a parade in
honor of Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloe Sevigny and Ginnifer Goodwin. But
more importantly, stuff happens. Ben-and-Margene stuff. Sarah-pregnancy
stuff. Nicki-birth-control stuff. Big stuff. Speaking of which, I’m
surprised you guys aren’t hounding me about the big death coming
up. What’s up with that?

Question: Has anyone been cast on the new Melrose yet? — Berk
Ausiello:
No, but I hear producers continue to aggressively pursue
Heather Locklear. And now that we know that Jake’s son will be a major
player
in the reboot, Grant Show will probably be next.

Question: Since we didn’t get a new House this week, do you have any scoop to hold us over until next week? — Morgan
Ausiello:
I’ve got something better — scoop in the form of a
frustrating fun game. Try and guess what House-related question prompted Jesse
Spencer to declare, "If there is, I’m done. I’ll walk. I’m freaking done." The answer is hidden somewhere in this week’s AA. Happy hunting!

Question: I’ve decided I’ll forgive your moving Ask Ausiello to
Thursdays on one condition: you provide some new House scoop. — Kate
Ausiello:
Congratulations all you game-players — you found it! Here’s
the question that prompted Jesse Spencer to declare, "If there is, I’m
done. I’ll walk. I’m freaking done.":

Any plans for a very special episode of House in which Chase and Cameron get married?

Did anyone guess correctly? If so, congrats! You just won exclusive access to the rest of
Spencer’s quote. "I think [producers] are wary about getting into too
much relationship stuff," he says. "It’s a procedural show at its core.
That’s why people like it. That’s why I like to watch it… [Besides],
how much do people want to see well-adjusted, happy Chameron? Because
of David [Shore]‘s general disdain for life, you can rest assured that
what we won’t be doing next season is getting happy. You won’t see
Chase and Cameron make a home and have babies and other greeting card
stuff."

Question: Hugh Laurie was spotted filming a beach scene in Malibu while wearing a
Hawaiian shirt. Do you know if it was a House scene he was shooting?
– Martina
Ausiello:
Yes, it was. And if I say anything more than that Katie Jacobs will kabob my kabits.

Question: I may be the only person in the world who’s extremely excited
by the breakup of Dan and Serena on Gossip Girl. What’s next for both
of them? — Randi
Ausiello:
A new love triangle for Serena that will eventually set in motion
that whole Anne Hathaway-inspired plot I told you about last week. What I failed to mention in that story was that when Serena’s grifter love interest is first introduced, he’s in
a relationship with her socialite bud, Poppy Lifton!

Question: Does First Husband Henry Taylor die on 24? Please say no. He is one of my new favorite characters! — Nicole
Ausiello:
I’ll say this about Henry’s fate: Nothing. I will, however,
divulge that his shooting leads to the introduction of First Daughter
Olivia, played by Jericho‘s Sprague Grayden. "She [became] estranged
from the family during the campaign after a small scandal," reveals
exec producer Howard Gordon. "She’s adversarial and very formidable,
and actually had a position of power in her mother’s campaign." We’ll
meet Olivia in Monday’s episode when a VIP who’s very familiar to 24
fans summons her.

Question: 24 scoop, please! This is the best season ever. What can you give us?  — Robin
Ausiello:
I thought I had the whole FBI mole situation figured out. I thought wrong.

Question: Any news on the Veronica Mars movie? — Esme
Ausiello:
Yes. Big news. Here.

Question: What’s going on with Sam on Supernatural? Is he going to succumb to the Dark Side? — Jon
Ausiello:
Let’s just say Sam may need to start going to meetings. The
kind of meeting where you step up in front of a room and declare, "Hi.
My name is Sam, and I’m a Demon Bloodholic."

Question: Totally psyched about the return of Rescue Me in April. How about some scoop? — Sean
Ausiello:
A major character will be diagnosed with cancer this season.
And because it’s Rescue Me, it’ll be both sad and hilarious. Probably
more of the latter.

Question: I have just been blown away by these final episodes of
Battlestar Galactica. I’m almost afraid to ask for spoilers. Eh, frak
it, what’s to come? — John
Ausiello:
I’m told this Friday’s episode is 33 percent about Ellen
Tigh, 31 percent about Brother Cavil, and 5 percent about this
awesomeness
. The other 31 percent remained unaccounted for at press time. (And I
agree with you about these BSG eps being top-notch. Well, mostly
top-notch. I still maintain that the Jan. 23 episode was a dud.)

Question: Is Roma Maffia gone for good on Nip/Tuck?  I hope not. — A. Swift
Ausiello:
She is not. Hey, speaking of Liz, did anyone else spot Days of Our Lives alum Lisa Howard playing her girlfriend in last week’s episode? I sure did!

Question: Is it too much to ask for some scoop about the return of George Clooney and Julianna Margulies to ER? Jackie
Ausiello:
Is it too much to answer in the form of a multiple choice
quiz? Cool. How much did George and Julianna each get paid for their
two days of work?

A)    $125K
B)    $225K
C)    $500K
D)    Scale

Submit your best guess in the comments section below and check back next week to see if you’re a winner!

And on that note, it’s time to bring this historic edition of Ask
Ausiello (first time on Thursday!) to a close. Please send

Music Chart: The Fray win the week

Categories: Charts, Music, Music Biz

We’re finally starting to see some motion in the Billboard 200 album sales chart after a fairly static month of January. The Fray take the top spot in this week’s chart, selling 179,000 copies of their self-titled album in its first week. That’s not a huge number by any means, but it’s the band’s best sales week to date nonetheless, and it was enough to knock last week’s champ, Bruce Springsteen’s Working on a Dream, down to No. 2 with 102,000 units moved.

Coming in at No. 3 was country star Dierks Bentley’s Feel That Fire, which debuted with 71,000 in sales. The once-invincible Taylor Swift, whose album Fearless recently spent eight weeks at the top of this chart, slid to No. 4 with 64,000, while Beyonce’s I Am…Sasha Fierce rounded out the top five with 51,000.

Other noteworthy chart debuts included Kidz Bop 15 at No. 7 with 38,000 and The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus’ Lonely Road at No. 14 with 26,000.

Ratings: 'The Mentalist' sets new series high

Categories: TV Biz, TV Ratings

It’s nice that Simon Baker is still eligible for a raise. He deserves one. His freshman drama The Mentalist, TV’s No. 1 new show, set another series-best in ratings Tuesday night, with 19.7 million viewers. That’s CBS’ best performance in that Tuesday at 9 p.m. time slot with a regularly scheduled program since 1995. Elsewhere on the dial, things weren’t quite so cheery: Fox’s American Idol was down 6 percent from last Tuesday, while Fringe dipped 23 percent. On ABC, an hour of Charlie Brown-themed Valentine’s Day programming did better than an hour of Scrubs, which continues to dwell below the 5 million viewer mark. (We won’t even bother to discuss True Beauty.) NBC’s The Biggest Loser: Couples lost 11 percent of its crowd from last week. The CW’s 90210 and Privileged fell, too — 5 percent and 15 percent, respectively.

Exclusive: Summer Glau sets off a 'Big Bang'

Categories: The Big Bang Theory

Summerglau_lThis has been a big week for The Big Bang Theory‘s nerd herd. First, they score their best ratings ever, and now they’re getting to rub elbows with frakkin’ Summer Glau!

The Sarah Connor Chronicles siren will play herself in the March 9 episode, the set-up of which already has me ROFWLing: A train trip to San  Francisco takes a major detour when Leonard, Sheldon, Wolowitz, and Raj discover that their favorite sci-fi actress in all the land is on board. But the fanboy frenzy quickly gives way to a heated mass debate (tee-hee) when they realize one of them will have to approach her — but who?

It’s not too difficult to figure out how this cheeky cross-over came about, provided you know this little detail: The Big Bang Theory and Sarah Connor Chronicles (which returns this Friday) are both produced by Warner Bros.

This is what we in the TV biz refer to as extremely positive synergy.

Exclusive: 'Moonlight' vamp Alex O'Loughlin returns to CBS

Categories: Criminal Minds

Alexoloughlin_lFinally, I have a bone to throw all you inconsolable Moonlight fans.

The dead drama’s central blood sucker, Alex O’Loughlin, is returning to CBS in an upcoming episode of Criminal Minds, sources confirm to me exclusively.

The change-of-pace hour, which is tentatively scheduled to air in April, will track a case from the POV of a serial killer, played by O’Loughlin.

This is O’Loughlin’s first leap back into TV since Moonlight was laid to rest nine months ago. At press tour last month, CBS president Nina Tassler — who signed the Aussie hunk to a development deal in August — hinted that we may see him back on the network “soon” in a new project.

What say you, Moonlight fans? Happy to see O’Loughlin sinking his teeth into another meaty TV role — even if he’s not literally doing so? Sound off below!
