Exclusive: I have something important to tell you!

Categories:

Before I say what I’m about to say, I want you to know that I did not take this decision lightly. On the contrary, it was only after much soul-searching (yes, I have one) and discussion with my closest advisers that I arrived at this turning point. So, although I realize it may cause many of you a period of discomfort, maybe even pain, I had to do it for myself.

Beginning this week, Ask Ausiello is (deep breath) moving to Thursdays.

I’ll give you all a minute to collect yourselves.

The reason the column is being postponed by a day forevermore is as simple as it is important: my love of a good 13 hours’ sleep a night health. You see, in addition to my having to wrap up AA on Tuesdays, the magazine closes on Tuesdays, resulting in the kind of deadline logjam that would’ve driven lesser men to drink more. By bumping the column to Thursdays, I’ll not only get to stop pulling out the hair I so highly value, I’ll also be able to deliver you a stronger AA. And if I can’t do that… well, my hair IS really nice.

So what do you say? Can we make Thursday the new Wednesday? (Would it help if there were bumper stickers?) Are you gonna be okay? And more importantly, what about me? If you need a hug tomorrow or are feeling lonely, I’ll be available between the hours of 1:70 pm and 3:90 pm/ET outside EW’s offices in midtown Manhattan. First come first serve!

Ratings: 'American Idol' wins the week

Categories: TV Biz, TV Ratings

Bikinigirl_l
A mix of Bikini Girl (who was sent home this week!), bad singing, and saucy bon mots from the judges helped take Fox’s American Idol — which premiered the first two episodes featuring its signature Hollywood Week round — to the top of the ratings for the week ending Feb. 8. But even while the show is still TV’s most powerful franchise, it has taken a tumble from the glory days of the past. Compared to last year’s Hollywood Week, whose episodes aired later — Tuesday, Feb. 12, and Wednesday, Feb. 13, a year ago — viewership was down by 500K (2 percent) and 1.7 million (6 percent), respectively.

But American Idol wasn’t the only music-related show on top. The 51st Annual Grammy Awards (No. 3) on CBS also drew a healthy viewership — a rather nice 19 million viewers tuned in, a bump of 11 percent over last year’s show, which also aired on CBS. Earlier in the evening, CBS scored with 60 Minutes (No. 4), which featured the first interview (by Katie Couric) with Capt. Sully Sullenberger, hero pilot of the Hudson River plane landing. While the 16.7 million who tuned in was no season high for the series, it did best the series’ season average by 1.4 million viewers.

The rest of the Top 20 is nearly identical to last week’s: Six of CBS’ signature procedurals dominated, with the network’s (and TV’s) top comedy, Two and a Half Men (No. 5), in the mix as well. ABC served up Grey’s Anatomy (No. 7), Desperate Housewives (No. 11), Private Practice (enjoying a bump from No. 32 to No. 13 this week because of the Grey’s crossover event), surging reality series The Bachelor (No. 19), and Lost (No. 19). Fox turned up with House (No. 8), Lie to Me (No. 12), and 24 (No. 18), while cellar-dwelling NBC and the CW didn’t manage to crack the Top 20. The full Top 20 — complete with total viewerships — is after the jump.

Exclusive: 'Ugly Betty' lives!

Categories: Ugly Betty

Uglybetty_lAn Ugly mess has been averted!

Despite the, ahem, perception problem that resulted from that whole open-ended hiatus thing, ABC is on the verge of renewing Ugly Betty for a fourth season, sources confirm to me exclusively.

The network is also said to be thisclose to giving early pickups to Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, Brothers & Sisters, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, America’s Funniest Home Videos, and The Bachelor.

An ABC spokesperson says the net “is not ready to announce any pick-ups at this point.”

As you know, Betty‘s future was called into question when ABC announced that it was temporarily replacing the show on Thursdays with an all-sitcom comedy block. At the time, Alphabet insiders insisted the show was safe, and, gosh dang-it, they weren’t lying!

What say you Betty fans? Relieved? Indifferent? Worried about Life on Mars and Samantha Who? now? Sound off below!

Chris Brown and Rihanna: More fallout

Categories: Music, Television

As more details emerge about Chris Brown’s alleged assault of Rihanna, aftermath from the incident continues to grow in scope. Two events have been affected: A concert Rihanna had scheduled in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for this Friday, Feb. 13, was indefinitely postponed today; and an NBA spokesperson tells EW that Brown has withdrawn from his scheduled appearance at pro basketball’s All-Star Game this weekend.

What’s more, a slew of companies and organizations have moved to distance themselves from Brown:

* The Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company, which had prominently featured Brown in a TV campaign for Doublemint Gum starting last year, took the ad off the air, saying, “Wrigley is concerned by the serious allegations made against Chris Brown. We believe Mr. Brown should be afforded the same due process as any citizen. However, we have made the decision to suspend the current advertising featuring Brown and any related marketing communications until the matter is resolved.”

* The Milk Mustache campaign tells EW that its “got milk?” print ad starring Brown was already scheduled to end its run this week, but adds in a statement, “The Milk Mustache campaign is taking the allegations against Chris Brown very seriously. We are very proud and protective of the image of the Milk Mustache campaign and the responsible message it sends to teens.”

* Sesame Street tells EW that a 2007 episode guest-starring Brown is being pulled from future airings.

Stay tuned for more news on the latest developments in this case.

Ratings: CBS wins the night, but Obama and 'The Bachelor' score for ABC

Categories: TV Ratings

Despite a truncated lineup due to President Obama’s press conference, CBS still won Monday night. The Eye’s Two and a Half Men was the evening’s top show, with 14.9 million viewers. A special Big Bang Theory benefited from the Two and a Half Men lead-in, drawing 13.1 million watchers. Capping off the night, 13.7 million fans tuned in to see CSI: Miami guest star Sean Combs square off against David Caruso.

Meanwhile, ABC had a solid night, thanks to President Obama’s address and the romantic pursuits of a single father. The Alphabet network nabbed the most viewers for the Presidential press conference (11.5 million). That led nicely into The Bachelor, which drew 10.9 million people, almost on par with last week’s 11 million.

Breaking: Are Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight REALLY leaving 'Grey's Anatomy'?

Categories: Grey's Anatomy

Greysanatomy_l
Here we go again.

The ongoing soap opera concerning Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight’s uncertain Grey’s Anatomy futures took another crazy turn today when co-star James Pickens Jr. confirmed to US Weekly that both actors are indeed leaving the show.

“Yes, she is,” Pickens said when asked if Heigl was checking out of Seattle Grace. “Wherever Katherine goes, I wish her
nothing but the best.” And what about Knight? “He’s going too,” Pickens said. “He just wanted to pursue other career paths.”

ABC isn’t commenting, but here’s what sources close to the situation are telling me about Pickens’ comments: Dude jumped the gun.

While it’s hardly a secret that Heigl and Knight want off the show,
Alphabet execs have yet to officially issue the actors their Get Out of
Jail Free cards. Unofficially, however, all indications are that it
will happen. The only question now is when.

“Right now, the whole thing is in the hands of their agents and
ABC’s lawyers,” explains an insider. “Something will probably be worked
out soon, but it’s a safe bet that Katherine and T.R. won’t be
returning as series regulars next season.”

If you believe the rumors, Heigl has been trying to wiggle her way out of her Grey’s
contract for the better part of the past two years. (She’s a movie
star, people!) Knight, meanwhile, approached the show’s producers last fall about making an early exit. As I previously reported, the Isaiahgate survivor has been frustrated by his lack of air time. “He’s an actor. He wants to act,” a Grey’s insider told me at the time. “It’s that simple.”

One possible wrinkle that may be delaying an official announcement: Grey’s
boss Shonda Rhimes may want Heigl and Knight to briefly reprise their
roles next season. “There’s talk of one or both of them doing an arc in
the fall,” whispers a Grey’s snitch. “That’s one of several things being discussed.”

What do you think? Would Grey’s flatline without George and Izzie? Or has it gotten to the point where you’re so sick of hearing about them leaving that you just want them to leave, period? Sound off below!

Exclusive: 'Parks and Recreation' recruits 'Everwood' alum

Chrispratt_l
NBC’s Amy Poehler-fronted Parks and Recreation just went from Must-See TV to Wild-Horses-Couldn’t-Drag-Me-Away TV.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that the hilarious Chris Pratt has been added to the dream ensemble. The Everwood grad (and future Mr. Anna Faris) will play the unemployed musician boyfriend of Rashida Jones’ nurse character.

The well-pedigreed Parks and RecreationThe Office‘s Greg Daniels and Michael Schur are producing — premieres Thursday, April 9.

The only thing that could make this show better is if they hired Cheri Oteri to play Poehler’s wacky assistant. (Hint, hint, Greg Daniels. Nudge, nudge, Michael Schur.)

Grammys burning questions answered!

Categories: Music, Television

EW.com talked to Jack Sussman, CBS’ exec VP of specials and live events, about the last-minute cancellation by Rihanna and Chris Brown, what was up with Justin Timberlake and Al Green, whether the show was ready in case M.I.A. gave birth on stage, and more. Here’s the scoop.

When did you learn that Rihanna and Chris Brown weren’t going to make it?
The Grammy production team was knee deep in rehearsals at the Staples Center when they first got the call between 1:30 and 2 p.m. Sunday about the no-shows (Rihanna was supposed to immediately follow U2 with a medley of "Disturbia" and "Live Your Life" while Brown was going to sing "Forever" before Kid Rock’s performance). "Beyond thinking, I hope they’re okay, it immediately goes out of your mind because you’re too busy thinking about what to do next," says Sussman. Justin Timberlake had just finished rehearsing his duet with T.I. when the team approached him in his dressing room about filling Rihanna’s spot with a brand new act. “Justin’s first words were, ‘what can I do to help?’” recalls Sussman. “That’s what you want to hear.” It was Timberlake’s idea to perform with Al Green, since the two Memphis natives had once performed "Let’s Stay Together" — and Green was already in town to present an award with Duffy. The veteran crooner was literally in his hotel bathtub when he got the call to rush to rehearsals, where he and Timberlake had less than two hours to prepare (Brown’s performance was not replaced).

Was it true you had a gurney waiting on the side of the stage while M.I.A., who is set to give birth any day now, was performing?
“She went into contractions when the show went on the air and she was not supposed to go on until act 8!” says Sussman. “I asked her to just hang on until 10 ET. The kid’s a gamer…and by the way, the gurney is always there. Every once in a while, someone falls.”

Why didn’t Whitney Houston perform?
“We only talked about her being a presenter,” says Sussman.

Did we hear Kanye West correctly? Did Bob Newhart win a Grammy for best new artist?
Yes, the running tally is: Newhart, one Best New Artist Grammy, Kanye West, none. Newhart won for  "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart" in 1960. West has won several Grammys, including Best Rap Album, but never Best New Artist.

Why so much rap and country in the show?
“I called it my musical sardine can,” says Sussman. “You want to make the show embraceable for lots of people, not just niche audiences. We’re a broadcast network TV show, not a narrow-cast cable music show.”

Did you cut categories to make room for more music? For instance, Katy Perry performed "I Kissed a Girl" but her category — Best Female Pop Vocal Performance — didn’t air.
"Every year it’s different," Sussman said. "Outside of the four or five major awards, the other awards change every year. And performing is better than actually having your category on air. People won’t remember who won best R&B album, but they will remember Jennifer Hudson’s performance.”

Was there an unprecedented number of acts?
Yes, says Sussman — 24 in total!

Chris Brown Wrigley's gum ads suspended

Categories: Music Biz

The fallout from Chris Brown’s arrest last night has begun. In a statement to EW.com concerning its ad campaign for Doublemint gum that incorporated Brown’s song “Forever”, the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company said that it is “concerned by the serious allegations made against Chris Brown,” and while they believe Brown deserves “due process,” they are suspending all ads “and any related marketing [featuring Brown]…until the matter is resolved.”

Brown turned himself into police custody last night in connection with an investigation into charges of a felony battery that allegedly took place in a car early Sunday morning. He was released from LAPD custody after posting $50,000 bail on Sunday night and is due in court March 5. It is being reported that the alleged victim’s name is Robyn Fenty, the real name of R&B singer, and Brown’s girlfriend, Rihanna.

Exclusive 'Veronica Mars' movie update: 'It's close'

Categories: Veronica Mars

Veronicamars_l
Veronica Mars
fans, if you pray, pray hard. And if you don’t, start, because the cult fave’s long-rumored movie version is about to enter the anxiety-producing phase known as do-or-die-time.

“I’m preparing the pitch now — literally now,” Mars‘ main man, Rob Thomas, told me this morning. “I hope to go in and talk to [executive producer] Joel Silver and [Warner Bros.] in the next week or two to see if they’re interested.”

But first, Thomas has to iron out the endgame of the plot, which, as I first reported last fall, focuses on Veronica solving a crime in college rather than as an FBI agent. “I haven’t figured it out yet,” he says of the final act. “That’s what I’m working on now. It’s close. A few key details left to solve.”

Thomas is quick to caution, however, that completing an outline and
pitching the studio are just two steps of a much larger, more daunting
process. “I have some fear that Veronica Mars fans believe that the
chief hurdle in getting the movie made is my writing it,” Thomas
confesses. “Unfortunately, that’s only one of several hurdles. I’m
going to give it my best shot and let the chips fall where they may.

“It’s entirely possible I won’t have an answer at the end of the
pitch,” he continues. “They will want to consider [the pitch], look at
some numbers — whatever it is people on the business side do — and
then they’ll give me some sort of response. Then, if they want to move
forward, there’s the deal-making that’ll need to go on.”

Surprisingly, one of the project’s primary selling points won’t be
tagging along to the meeting. “Kristen [Bell] will not be joining me,”
he says. “I’m sure she has no desire to see how the sausage is made.”

Perhaps not, but I think I know what K. Bell would like to see: a
comments section overflowing with messages of support and encouragement
for Thomas as his Mars mission approaches stage: critical. That’s your cue to get busy writing!

Ratings: Grammys up, Kilmer down

Categories: TV Ratings

Chesleysullenberger60minutes_l
The Grammy Awards gave CBS an easy Sunday ratings victory, averaging 19.7 million viewers — up a stunning 11 percent over last year, a rarity for awards shows these days — while the net’s 60 Minutes interview with U.S. Airways Captain Chesley Sullenberger netted a similarly solid 16.8 million viewers. The first night of NBC’s two-part Val Kilmer movie XIII, meanwhile, fell flat, garnering an audience of just 6.3 million. The rest of the weekend was business as usual, with the Eye killing on Friday with Ghost Whisperer (11.4 million viewers) and Numb3rs (10.2 million), NBC’s critical darling Friday Night Lights (4.2 million) continuing to suffer, and Fox dominating Saturday — this time with NASCAR coverage (7.6 million).
