'Friday Night Lights': Zach Gilford talks about the show's renewal and if he'll return, too

Tags:

Friday Night Lights will be back for two more seasons, but Zach Gilford‘s days in Dillon could be over. Barring an unlikely academic meltdown, Gilford’s put-upon quarterback Matt Saracen will graduate this season from Dillon High, following the lead of Jason Street (Scott Porter) and “Smash” Williams (Gaius Charles), who previously bid their adieus. (Minka Kelly and Adrianne Palicki are also rumored to be moving on, so FNL might be facing some serious rebuilding.)

In a recent conversation with EW, Gilford said he was excited about the show’s renewal but acknowledged that executive producer Jason Katims recently told him that Saracen’s fate remains undecided. Still, he hasn’t abandoned all hope. “I think there’s a lot of stuff that could keep him around,” suggests the 27-year-old actor, who stars in the upcoming movie Post-Grad, opposite Alexis Bledel. “The fact that Matt’s dating the coach’s daughter and his best friend will still be in high school. But they have to make sure it’s done in a way that will still keep the show about what the show’s supposed to be about, which is the high school football team.”

Ratings: 'Dancing With the Stars' wins again on Monday

No surprise, ABC’s Dancing With the Stars was far and away the Monday night winner with 20.2 million viewers, according to preliminary overnight ratings. The network’s mid-season series, Castle, meanwhile, held steady with 9.8 million fans, same as last week. Over on Fox, a guest appearance by rapper/actor Mos Def helped drive House to a solid 12.2 million. The night was not good for NBC’s Chuck, though, as the series struggled with only 5.6 million viewers.

Spoiler alert: 'Life on Mars' ending (sorta) revealed!

Lifeonmars_lMemo to October Road creators Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg: All’s forgiven! The pair’s short-lived ABC soap made my ears bleed, but they more than made up for it with their out-of-this-world follow-up, Life on Mars — so much so that I’m almost tempted to give Road a second look on DVD. (I said almost.) Unfortunately, anemic ratings prompted ABC to abort Mars‘ mission after just 17 episodes, the last of which airs tomorrow night (10 pm/EST). The good news? Appelbaum and Rosenberg had enough notice to wrap up the time-tripping drama’s central mystery and give viewers what has become something of a rare commodity these days in TV land: closure. The even better news? Despite my merciless Road bashing, the classy duo agreed to get on the phone with me to spoil preview tomorrow’s must-see climax.

In the UK version, the fate of Sam was left very much up in the air. Please tell me your ending will be a little less ambiguous.
JOSH APPELBAUM:
One hundred percent. There is a very clear and
definitive answer as to what his journey has been about and how all the
pieces over the past 17 hours play into that journey. At the same
time, we hope, like all great finales, it still leaves things open to
interpretation. But if there’s one thing we feel pretty good about it’s
that in the afterlife of Life on Mars on DVD or wherever, it will exist
as a cohesive, complete thought that will all make sense.

Did you always plan to conclude your version differently?
SCOTT ROSENBERG:
Right from the beginning. Anybody with access to
Wikipedia can find out how the [UK version] ended. So we were certain we wanted to do it differently. And it was kind of in prep on
the pilot that we stumbled upon what our ultimate ending was. We never
did anything that wouldn’t be explained by this ending. And we also
left clues along the way, so people that go back and watch it a second
time will go, “So that’s why they did this.” There were names, numbers,
all kinds of things.

How will the finale be structured? Will there be the standard case to solve, or is it all about wrapping up Sam’s story?
ROSENBERG: There’s a standard case, but it’s all a culmination episode.
It was going to be the same if it was the season finale or a series
finale. The only difference is if it was a season finale it would have
ended with a very different Act Six, with cliffhangers and that sort of
thing. [Sam's] mother and father play very heavily in it. Sam’s emotional
journey was really about his past and his family… And without saying too much, there’s a major climax with Sam and Annie’s journey together.

Will Lisa Bonet be in the episode?
ROSENBERG: She is not in it. She was for a half-second, and then we decided not to.

Is that a hint as to what decade he ultimately ends up in?
[Crickets]
APPELBAUM: [to Scott] Good job stumbling into that one, Rosenberg. [Laughs]

You like how I did that?
ROSENBERG:

Nice!
APPELBAUM: Unbelievable!

This isn’t my first time at the rodeo.
ROSENBERG: Let’s start over: Lisa Bonet is in the episode. [Laughs]

Too late! Moving on, will the show definitely be on DVD?
ROSENBERG:

Oh, yeah.

There weren’t clearance issues with all the popular music you featured?
ROSENBERG:

We only cleared songs if they allowed us to use it forever, and it wasn’t that difficult. Music is so important to us, both in this and in October Road. Remember that one, Michael?

Hmm… it rings a bell.
ROSENBERG:

[Laughs] You’re like, “I tried not to.”
APPELBAUM: [Laughs] He’s like, “It was a bad case of indigestion.”

Last question: What’s the deal with the tiny robot?
ROSENBERG:

The robot is totally explained away [in the finale]. By
Wednesday night at 11 you will know what the robot is, and I’m sure you
will be annoyed. [Laughs]

It's official: 'Friday Night Lights' renewed for two more seasons

Fridaynightlights_lTouch-freaking-down!

Sources at NBC are now confirming what I first reported earlier this month: DirecTV and NBC have come to terms on a deal that ensures Friday Night Lights will stick around for not one but two more seasons!

And I repeat: Touch-freaking-down!

Although NBC declined to comment, my Peacock insider says the pact guarantees that FNL will see a fourth and fifth season of 13 episodes each. Similar to this season’s shared-window experiment, DirecTV will get first crack at the episodes followed by an encore run on NBC.

Let’s get a chant going in the comments section! And while you’re at it, pray that the show’s creative mastermind, Jason Katims, finds a way to juggle both FNL and that prospective Parenthood series he’s producing for NBC. Ditto director Jeffrey Reiner, who’s attached to NBC’s Trauma pilot. Losing one would be devastating; losing both would be a catastrophe. So how about we lose neither? You with me?

'Dancing With the Stars' judge Carrie Ann Inaba: Are the pros to blame for the injuries?

Tags:

Dancing With the Stars‘ judge (and EW celebrity blogger) Carrie Ann Inaba thinks she may know what — or who — is behind all the crazy injuries on the show this season. From Nancy O’Dell’s torn meniscus to Steve Wozniak’s pulled hamstring, Inaba believes the ouchies may be due to the dancing partners who “have gotten more competitive as the seasons have gone on.” So are Derek Hough, Cheryl Burke, and the impossibly gorgeous Edyta Sliwinska attempting the impossible with their klutzy C-listers? “The professional dancers are getting more and more competitive amongst themselves, and they are pushing their celebrities very hard,” Inaba admitted to EW while walking the red carpet for Nickelodeon’s Kids Choice Awards on March 28. “The professionals’ reputations are at stake, and they want to win the title just as bad if not worse than the celebs because that is what they do for a living. I also think that the celebrities are pushing themselves harder.

“The first season, no one really knew what to expect or what it would take or how hard we would judge them,” Inaba added. “They know that if they do well on the show their careers can take off. It can really help on a business level. Look at Mario Lopez — and he didn’t even win. It is a great stage for America to get to know them for who they are now, and it can be rejuvenating. Plus, they get bragging rights if they win. And a lot of them use it to get in shape. Anyway, I think they start to put in more energy, practice longer, and take bigger risks in the routines, so someone is bound to get hurt. Or a few people as the case has been. But I think they see it as worth it. Big rewards.” (Reporting by Carrie Bell)

'90210' shocker: Leading man Milligan to exit

Dustinmilligan_l90210‘s new boss lady, Rebecca Rand Kirshner Sinclair, recently told me that the soap’s second season would be "significantly" different than the first, and, man, she wasn’t kidding.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Dustin Milligan, who plays affable jock (and one half of 90210‘s central super couple) Ethan, won’t be returning to the show in the fall — at least not full time.

Reps for The CW and producer Paramount declined comment, but a 90210 insider confirms that Milligan’s contract option is not being picked up for next season. The source adds that the door is being left open for the actor to briefly appear in the fall to wrap up Ethan’s story.

All indications are that Milligan’s exit was strictly a creative decision. "Everyone loves Dustin," maintains the insider. "There was just a feeling that the character had run its course." (Curiously, the news comes just days after Milligan’s newbie co-star,
Matt Lanter — a.k.a. bad boy Liam — confirmed that he was being promoted to a series regular next season.)

The departure of one the show’s most high profile leading men is the clearest indication yet that Sinclair’s ongoing reboot of the reboot will be anything but minor. Viewers will get their first taste of the Gilmore Girl alum’s new vision when 90210 returns from its winter hiatus this Tuesday with a hilariously campy outing that features the primetime soap trifecta: stalkers, street-racing, and scenery-chewing!

Looking ahead to season 2, Sinclair said last month that she wants to "reconceive things visually. There are opportunities to embrace California culture visually in terms of fashion and style; I want it to be more contemporary.

"If Gossip Girl is about youth in New York," she elaborated, "I want to [make 90210] about youth in L.A. and Beverly Hills."

The writer-producer also plans to rely less on 90210 vets such as Jennie Garth, Shannen Doherty, and Tori Spelling to boost ratings. "The show tried to be a lot of things to a lot of people in its first season," she conceded. "I think the center lies with the generation of kids that are in high school now. I’m not interested in casting people for stunt value."

Sinclair, who replaces original show-runners Jeff Judah and Gabe Sachs, said the show will benefit from having a singular vision. "The advantage of having one person — me — [in charge] is that scripts, what happens on the set, casting… it all speaks in one voice."

Thoughts on Sinclair’s new 90210? Waiting to pass judgment until you see this season’s remaining episodes? Is the loss of cute-but-boring Ethan a step in the right or wrong direction? Sound off below!

Ratings: 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' adds viewers on Sunday

Tags:

ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition got a ratings boost on Sunday with a two-hour episode, while Desperate Housewives sat the hour out, according to preliminary Nielsen estimates. (Usually a viewer magnet, Desperate Housewives showed up only in a rerun an hour later than usual, at 10 p.m.) Makeover averaged 10.8 million viewers, a million more than last week. The absence of Housewives and lead-out Brothers & Sisters also helped NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice, which ticked up 16 percent to 8.5 million. NCAA basketball, however, helped CBS win the night (though its overrun into primetime means the net’s times and viewership numbers are approximate); with March Madness leading off the traditionally strong Sunday schedule, the network averaged 12.1 million viewers on Sunday. The Eye dominated Friday (with 10.3 million) and Saturday (8.6 million), too, thanks to hoops, hoops, and more hoops.

It's official: 'Lipstick Jungle' is dead

Lipstickjungle_lAn NBC spokesperson declined to comment, but a Peacock insider is confirming what I first told you back in November: Lipstick Jungle has been canceled.

The show’s leading lady, Brooke Shields, told E! that cast and crew received the bad news late last week. “I think a lot of people were really sad, but I think we hung on a really long time,” she said. “It was three great years that we’ve been working on it.”

Exclusive: Kathleen Turner heats up 'Californication'

Kathleenturner_lIconic sex symbol Kathleen Turner is joining Showtime’s Californication for a recurring arc during the dramedy’s upcoming third season, sources confirm to me exclusively.

Turner will play the ball-breaking, foul-mouthed, outrageous boss of Evan Handler’s literary agent. She’s Ari Gold without the poison sushi allergy penis!

A Showtime rep declined to comment, but Turner’s spokesperson, Alan Nierob, confirmed that the Oscar-nominated actress would be spending three months in Los Angeles shooting the role.

Season three of Californication is slated to debut next fall.

Will Arnett: Just call him the king of voiceovers

Tags:

Will Arnett — who voices the Missing Link in Monsters vs. Aliens, which opens today – has only just begun to forge a new career as a voice-over actor. Arnett will lend his vocal cords to the role of an English teacher named Ennis Hofftard in Fox’s animated TV comedy Sit Down, Shut Up (premiering April 19) from Mitch Hurwitz (Arrested Development). He has also accepted an uncredited role in Eva Adams, a drama pilot from Kevin Falls (Journeyman) that’s under consideration for fall, in which he plays a misogynist trapped in a woman’s body.

“I am having a great time doing voice work,” Arnett told EW while attending the Monsters premiere. “I have found a niche. Maybe I should only do animated stuff from now on. Myabe the Arrested Development movie should be animated. I bet more people would have watched our show if it was animated. They’d have gotten confused and thought it was for their kids. That’s a huge audience. Or maybe I shouldn’t be that excited about it. Maybe they just give me the work so my face won’t be on screen.” (Reporting by Carrie Bell)

Fact: He turns up in the season finale.

'Mentalist' mystery: Who's Alicia Witt playing?

Aliciawitt_l
She’s playing Red John!!

Wait, that came out wrong. What I meant to say is she’s connected to Red John, the infamous serial killer who took the life of P-Jane’s wife and child.

Let me back up: Sources confirm to me exclusively that Alicia Witt (of Cybill and Law & Order: Criminal Intent fame) will guest star in the season finale of The Mentalist as Rosalind Harker, a luminously beautiful piano player who used to date the madman, the myth, the legend known as Red John.

OMG, this is just the break Simon Baker’s master observationist was looking for, right?! Well, kinda. You see, Rosalind isn’t able to… The thing is… What I’m trying to say is… It’s a big ol’ twist, dammit!

'Office' exclusive: Another Dunder Mifflinite defects!

Tags:

Pammichael_l
If you haven’t seen this week’s Office yet, head for the nearest exit. Everyone else, read on…

The new boss at Dunder Mifflin may want to familiarize himself with the company’s non-compete policy, because I’m hearing yet another employee will be joining Pam and Michael at the newly-formed Michael Scott Paper Co.

Actually, make that an ex-employee: Ryan!

Yep, sources confirm that in an upcoming ep Michael will offer his onetime boss (played by B.J. Novak) a position at his upstart, and I’m told he will accept. Of course, based on the promo we saw at the end of last night’s ep — showing a now-bleach-blond Ryan slumming it as a bowling alley manager — he’s hardly in a position to turn him down.

Who’ll defect next? How long do you think these warring factions will go at it before we get our old Office back? Are you embracing this truly game-changing plot as much as I am? Sound off below!
