Fox has confirmed reports that the Top 13 finalists on American Idol will tackle Michael Jackson (his music, not the man) in their first performances on the main Idol stage next Tuesday, March 10. Several contestants told EW.com at last night’s Top 13 party in Los Angeles that they were excited and more than a bit nervous to take on the King of Pop’s catalog, but it was unclear at the time when that night would fall in Idol‘s schedule. “Michael Jackson might be coming up,” said contestant Kris Allen, “which would be kinda fun, but scary as well since I actually did a Michael Jackson song [in the semifinal round].”
A rep for the show says Jackson will not be mentoring the contestants, but was mum about whether Jackson would be making an appearance, replying only, “Not to my knowledge.” Meanwhile, Kanye West and original American Idol Kelly Clarkson are scheduled to perform on Wednesday’s elimination show.
SO excited to see Kelly!!!! I haven’t seen her perform that song yet live – she’ll rock it 4 sure. Kanye better not give her any trouble. (Kidding!)
I think I would faint if Michael was on!

I hope Adam rocks it out with thriller. I think he’s the only one who’s vocals could handle that song.

Not just the vocals, but the theatrics of the song is well suited for him. I always picture the video as well.
I do think, however, that there is at least one other singer that can give Adam fits. Not in matching his range, necessarily, but giving the song the necessary punch. Song choice.

yay! the King is back!
It would be amazing to see MJ on Idol. Similar to the George Michael appearance last year, it is always a jolt to see a true talent once in a while. Number one selling album of all time, the King Of Pop is back baby!
Although I do enjoy listening to some of MJ’s songs, I do think that they were more about the beat than vocal ability. I never thought it was a good idea that someone auditions with an MJ song. To paraphrase the judges: The Idols will “have to make these songs their own” and not try to mimic his tics and hiccups in his singing…and Adam has to connect with the lyrics and not just wail…we know you have a good voice, now use it properly!
michael jackson week should be interesting! i kind of hope that anoop sings “man in the mirror” this time! kris sang it last time so i’m sure he’ll sing something different. i hope that “thriller” is just a group song and that nobody sings it solo! that would be terrible. i’m looking forward to seeing kelly clarkson next week! it’s getting annoying just seeing contestants from season 7, we need some variety! next time melinda doolittle should come on the show. she just released a cd!

Oh my — let’s hope he doesn’t appear. I will surely have nightmare for weeks if he does. That is one scary looking dude (wait, dude? chick?). How could anyone destroy their face like that. What a waste of talent.

I think it’s great that they’re doing MJ’s catalog, however it well be difficult. He has put such a stamp on his song, that it’s hard to to image or hear someone else try to do them. I wish the contestants luck and I will be watching.
When the contestants choose material from an icon (like Micheal Jackson,the Beatles, Elvis, Whitney, etc,the judges usually give them a hard time about it, critizing every note and saying they don’t sound contemporary enough, etc. So why does the show insist on giving the contestants no choice but to sing material by an icon (like last years Beatles catalog, the results of which were just plain awful !)?? Micheal Jackson material is good stuff, but very few of the contestants will be able to pull it off; they just aren’t the same type of singer that Micheal is.
