When Ian began to give the first speech on Shiloh, I was awed. Unfortunately the rest of the cast blew. I had to give up watching because the only only scenes I could sit through were Ian’s, and some of them were LAME!!!!
I was sooo stoked for this series…maybe part of my problem is that I built it up in my head into something it could not possibly be.
Oh yeah, and the seemingly quadrillion mentions of God in the first 20 minutes of the show REALLY turned me off. I understand the allusions to David and Saul, but they didn’t need to bash us with it quite so much.
I will try to sit through next Sunday’s episode without muting the scenes that Ian isn’t in, but this time, the bar of expectation is so low a flea could barely crawl under it.
I totally disagree with what a majority of you guys are saying. Kings was brilliant. The cast, including Ian McShane, was terrific. I don’t understand where people get off saying the acting was atrocious. And yes God was brought into it but it wasn’t throwing it in anyone’s face. And since when does the mention of God mean that a show should be discounted. It was overall an epic and masterfully built episode. I look forward to the rest of the season. Hopefully it stays around. It is very different from anything out there and is finally a new show of high quality. HEAR THAT CBS HIGH QUALITY. NBC just has to keep the faith and promote the heck out of this show. Lastly, the story was straightforward and pretty simple. All you need to do is wikipedia David and Goliath. Pretty simple. Not too convoluted or confusing.
Those who know the story and the Bible will pick up on all the little things that most will miss. I hope the ratings will pick up. I need something new to watch. So sick of all these shows out today.
JB, I think you made a good point – those who are familiar with the Bible will get it. But the Kings writers need to realize that not everyone is Christian and familiar with the Bible (I’m not). They need to make something that anyone and everyone can understand without having to know any type of backstory – religious or otherwise. Kings isn’t doing that.
I had no problems with Ian McShane or the actress who played his wife or Sebastian Stan, but the actors who played the daughter and David were not as good.
You don’t have to “know the bible” to recognize that “Kings” is going to be a great show. Shelley has “no problems” with Ian McShane? Oh, please. He’s one of the greatest actors of our time. If you were bored, you’re brainless.
McShane: “There’s no apocalyptic voice coming on, saying, ‘It’s the year 2025. The world is in disarray. These people are’–we don’t wear an overall or some kind of strange one-piece.”
Critic: So there’s a United States, there’s a China, there’s a Russia. So it’s this world. It’s just not a country we know?…OK. Now you’re not making any sense at all.”
McShane: “We’re not making any sense? Is that what drama’s about? Isn’t drama-excuse me–for your ignorant remark. Isn’t drama-based on the fact-we’re not making any sense? What the hell kind of question? You ask a question. You want an answer or not?… What do you expect, it all spelled out for you now? That you should know what kind of pop culture of we’re going to refer to Britney Spears’ new child?”
I liked it….short of the David vs Goliath thing..I tried not to draw too much comparison to the bible…I just watched it as an epic and thought it was good.. So far so good..I will tune in again this Sunday..
