'The Closer' exclusive: It's McDonnell vs. Sedgwick!

Marymcdonnell_lBring it the frak on.

Ex-Battlestar Galactica prez Mary McDonnell is joining TNT’s The Closer for a multi-episode arc as a police captain who butts heads with Kyra Sedgwick, sources confirm to me exclusively.

It’s a battle of TV’s feminist icons!

McDonnell’s alter ego, Capt. Christina Hatcher, runs the department’s Force Investigation Division and is slated to debut early into The Closer‘s forthcoming fifth season.

This character should not be confused with the lesbian cop the show is (or was) casting. This is a completely different role, one that a Closer insider says exec producer James Duff created specifically for the BSG star.

What do you think? Has Brenda met her match? Do you hope McDonnell’s gig turns permanent? And, switching gears, will this finally be the year Emmy recognizes her for BSG? (It better be.) Sound off in the comments!

It’s going to be interesting to see the two of them together. I can’t wait.

Watching these two phenomenal actress together should be a lot of fun, especially if the character is given some teeth to actually go head-to-head with Brenda. Once in awhile Brenda needs an equal she can’t easily walk over to get what she wants. Do I smell spin-off? FID: LA?

Oh! I can’t wait. Mary was absolutely incredible in BSG and this sounds sure to be excellent.

Let’s just hope Mary has better material here than she did on Greys.

YES!!! *Dances around room* So glad to see Mary McDonnell as another strong woman character! Oh, I’d love to see her as a regular because I enjoy The Closer’s mix of drama and humor, the latter somewhat rare in Battlestar Galactica.
Given the Emmys’ new nominee selection process, unfortunately, as head and shoulders above all the other potential nominees that Mary is, sounds like she’s less likely to get the nomination and Emmy she has deserved for several years. Curse the Emmys for their archaic prejudice against anything associated with the term Sci Fi. Given all the Scientologists in Hollywood, you’d think there’d be a lot of votes for an actor from L. Ron Hubbard’s genre :-(

    This is FUKKN awesome!

Addendum, for Ausiello: Thank you so much for giving us this piece of news today. Over in the skiffy thread, you have brought unbelievable joy to a great number of fans previously in mourning. Now, if only they can get Edward James Olmos cast as the new character’s husband, the world (at least ours) would be perfect! ;-)

I am so excited! I like ”The Closer.” And I love Mary McDonnell. I do think that Brenda has met her match. The two of them will be interesting to watch. I hope Mary McDonnell’s role does become permanent. I really do hope the Emmys finally does recognize for her role on BSG. I think it about time they notice the amazing job she does and give her an Emmy!

Both very appealing actresses, but I wonder if the appearance of yet another “tough, smart” TV female cop will be enough to enable “The Closer” to come back. Last season was mostly silly and ho-hum, full of dopey little snits with “Fritzie” and endless crap involving his new yokel in-laws. After an intense, compelling previous season — remember Brenda in the ‘copter w/wounded officer? — the show really lost its edge.

  • Laura

I think the two of them will make thing quite exciting, but in the end Brenda should win out, she is the best. Mary is a strong actress and deserves her own show. If they want to feature her once awhile fine, but not as a permanent addition.
