Ratings: 'Survivor,' 'CSI,' 'Grey's Anatomy' score on Thursday

Categories: TV Ratings

The absence of American Idol‘s Thursday night cameo from last week left room for Survivor to take the lead in the 8 o’clock hour, while ratings behemoth CSI easily took the evening (despite a fairly hefty 20 percent decline). Meanwhile, a new episode of Grey’s Anatomy came in second for the night after three weeks of repeats. And the beginning of the end for NBC staple ER continued to gain viewers as its April 2 finale rapidly approaches.

'House' bosses spill scoop on 'Huddy,' 'Chameron,' 'Foreteen,' and more!

Categories: House

Housecast_laurie_l

As you no doubt surmised from my last two Ask Ausiellos, I recently chatted with House exec producers David Shore and Katie Jacobs. But it’s probably time I stopped parceling out sound bites here and there and just ran the entire transcript — if for no other reason than to watch the two of them squirm around such topics as Amber’s return, House’s descent into madness, and who’s hanging up his/her scrubs this season.

AUSIELLO: There’s an episode coming up where we learn House traveled to New York under mysterious circumstances. Does that trip tie into the upcoming emotional crisis House will be going through?
DAVID SHORE:
It is tied into that. There’s certainly a thru-line within the episode about what he was doing there. I can say we’re certainly exploring House and we’re going a little deeper.
KATIE JACOBS: There’s an accumulation of events — some of which would not normally bother him and some of which would bother him — that are conspiring to make him struggle even more than we’ve seen him struggle before.

How does Cuddy figure into this?
SHORE:
It’s very complicated, but Cuddy does figure into it.
JACOBS: She cares about him.
SHORE:
They’re both troubled people. And they both make mistakes. It’s not as
simple as she’s this thing and if he could only reach out and grab it
everything would be okay.

How will Cameron and Chase be re-integrated into the show in the final four episodes?
SHORE:
We’ve got some really
cool stuff coming up, and unfortunately, I can’t even give you little
hints at it. It’s a set of dominos: I knock one over, they all fall
over.

Do Jesse Spencer and Jennifer Morrison figure into your long-term plans?
SHORE:
They do.

What are your plans for Foreman and Thirteen as the season winds down?
SHORE:
There are obstacles, but it’s not a huge storyline coming up.
JACOBS:
They’re not breaking up in the immediate future. But it’s not as much
about that relationship or Cameron  and Chase or Cuddy and House…
it’s about a family of people who work together, and if something
changes in the dynamic of that family, how will they all react as
individuals and as family members?

Any romance on the horizon for Wilson?
SHORE:
We do hint at something.

Can you confirm that Anne Dudek will be back as Amber?
(Crickets)
SHORE: Katie?
(Crickets)
JACOBS: (Pauses) No, I can’t.

Last question: Any cast changes as we head into next fall?
SHORE:
You’ll pretty much see the same cast as last year.

Pretty much?
SHORE:
Thank you, Michael!
JACOBS: Keep watching!

'CSI' exclusive: Henry Thomas books killer role

Categories: CSI

Csihenrythomas_l
Good thing E.T. isn’t around to see this.

Henry Thomas has been cast as a convicted murderer in a May sweeps episode of CSI that delves into Catherine’s (Marg Helgenberger) early days as a crime scene sleuth, sources confirm to me exclusively.

The 38-year-old actor will play Jeremy Kent, a presumed killer that Catherine put away during her first solo case back in 1991. Now, after nearly two decades in prison, during which he learned everything he could about forensics, Thomas’ character is calling her original findings into question.

Did Cath make a rookie mistake?! Will new technology exonerate E.T.’s BFF?! Is Thomas’ 1984 masterpiece Cloak & Dagger the most underrated crime thriller ever? Don’t know, probably, and damn straight it is!

Fox Broadcasting executive shakeup: Peter Ligouri out, Peter Rice in

Categories: TV Biz

There has been a big shakeup at Fox Broadcasting today: Fox Searchlight
President Peter Rice will reportedly replace Peter Liguori as chairman
of the TV network. Rice, who’s credited for the success of the indie
arm of the 20th Century Fox’s movie studio, will be replaced by Fox
Searchlight vets Nancy Utley and Steve Gilula. Fox Searchlight was
responsible for Slumdog Millionaire, this year’s Oscar winner for Best Picture. Ligouri had been at the network for five years.

NBC to relaunch 'I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!'

Categories: TV Biz

As part of its busy (see: lots more originals) summer lineup, NBC has picked up new episodes of I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! for a special run in June. Having first debuted on ABC in 2003, the reality show that drops D-level celebs into the heart of the jungle will air Mondays through Thursdays for three weeks beginning June 1 and then air Monday through Wednesday during the fourth week of June. "This is a concept that has worked really well, all around the world," says NBC head of scheduling Mitch Metcalf of I’m a Celebrity…, which is based on an international reality-show format from Granada America. "It will jump start our summer."

NBC will also stack the deck for Conan O’Brien’s much-anticipated debut as the new host of The Tonight Show on June 1 by scheduling the season finales of Medium (June 1), Law & Order: SVU (June 2), and Law & Order (June 3)  — as well as the premiere of  the new drama The Listener on June 4 — during that week. The Listener revolves around a young paramedic (The Timekeeper’s Craig Olejnic) who is telepathic.

Two other new scripted dramas will bow this summer: The Philanthropist (June 24) which stars James Purefoy as a wealthy do-gooder, and Merlin (June 21), a 13-parter about the infamous Camelot sorcerer. Besides the return of America’s Got Talent on June 23, NBC will trot out two  made-for-TV miniseries this summer, as well: Meteor (June 7), a disaster flick that stars Christopher Lloyd and Marla Sokoloff, and Storm (July 19), a Treat Williams starrer about a man-made disaster gone bad.

Ratings: 'Lie to Me' survives time slot switch. It's true!

Categories: TV Biz, TV Ratings

Fox’s Lie to Me, which switched time slots with American Idol for the first time Wednesday night, pulled down numbers comparable to what it got when it aired after the ratings Godzilla. Meanwhile, the lackluster series debut of NBC’s Chopping Block drew in only 4 million viewers, good enough only to beat an hour of Scrubs reruns on ABC. Over at The CW, America’s Next Top Model bettered last week’s season premiere audience by 13 percent.

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'Housewives,' 'Grey's Anatomy,' 'House,' 'Chuck,' 'Heroes,' 'NCIS,' 'Prison Break,' '24,' 'Gossip Girl,' 'SVU,' and more!

Greysanatomyheiglizzy_dl

Question: Got any clues as to what’s ailing Izzie on Grey’s Anatomy? –George
Ausiello:
Sources confirm to me exclusively that Izzie will learn in this week’s episode that she has ***** * ********** ******** that has spread to her ***** and *****.

Question: I need some Mer-Der proposal scoop, please! –Dee
Ausiello:
Der’s second attempt goes haywire, but the third time’s the charm — Patrick Dempsey (sort of) said so himself on The View yesterday! In totally unrelated news, you can now follow me and my scoops on Twitter!

Question: Any news on a possible Chuck renewal? A petition for a third season has already started. –Dianne
Ausiello:
Petitions are nice. Viewers are nicer. With that in mind, here’s a recap of all the mind-blowing stuff coming up this spring on TV’s funniest comedy:

•    Multiple weddings
•    A shocking death
•    Morgan departs the Buy More
•    Chuck and his father are reunited
•    Chuck and Sarah are going further than they ever have before
•    Chevy Chase
•    The return of Jeffster
•    The return of Bryce
•    The return of the Awesomes
•    A game-changing twist that will (hopefully) launch the show into season 3.

Question: NCIS… anything good going to happen? –Beth
Ausiello:
Did you miss this week’s EW, or are you just that greedy? As I report in my print column, the NCIS spin-off-launching episodes will fill in a blank that’s long been missing re. Gibbs. "There’s a resolution to him," says ex producer Shane Brennan, "in a story that has spanned the entire series, from the very first episode all the way through. It really is a piece of information the audience is well aware of — part of his back story — and in the spin-off [episodes], he lays that to rest." Any clue what it could be? Head to the comments and get a mass debate (tee-hee) going!

Question: Do you have anything on Prison Break‘s last episodes? –Abby
Ausiello:
Yes, but perhaps nothing that’ll really surprise you. I mean, it’s Prison Break — you kinda figure people are gonna die (like, several of ‘em). Aside from that, a few past characters are gonna resurface (including C-Note and Sofia), and the Company is gonna get shut down. (Yay!) Hey, on second thought, this might titillate you: Apparently, Michael is smacked with a Sophie’s choice and has to decide whether to save Lincoln’s head or Sara’s. And since she’s already lost hers once…

Question: It seems like you have something against giving out How I Met Your Mother scoops, but I’ll take my chances, anyway. Any scoop you can reveal? –Andrea
Ausiello:
I have nothing against giving out HIMYM scoop, Andrea, it’s actually you I have something against. Nonetheless, I will tell you that Alyson Hannigan finally left for maternity leave last week. And not a moment too soon. "She is not a big person to begin with, [so she is literally] now half baby," laughs EP Carter Bays. "Even if we had the option to keep her around, it would be comically difficult to hide that growing child inside her." Luckily, despite her maternity leave, she won’t be left out of the show for too long. "We have a funny way to cross her out for a few episodes," teases Bays, "and we shot some of her scenes in advance."

Question: Got anything on How I Met Your Mother? –Luke
Ausiello:
How ironic would it be if, after spending the entire season hiding Alyson Hannigan’s pregnancy, HIMYM producers ended the season by making Lily pregnant! Pretty ironic, right? Well, guess what — it just might happen! "It’s a distinct possibility," says EP Carter Bays. "On the one hand, there are a lot of funny baby stories just waiting to be told. But on the other hand, that could mean the end of all the stories we could tell at the bar. You kind of have to reach the point where it’s like, "Alright, there are no more stories to tell in the bar, so it’s time to start telling baby stories." So, I guess the question is, Is HIMYM at that point yet? Sounds like more mass debate (tee-hee) fodder for the comments section.

Question: Okay, after watching Laura Prepon’s annoying Karen nearly ruin an otherwise outstanding episode of HIMYM last Monday, I’m left wondering how long we have to put up with her. –Steve
Ausiello:
Maybe we were watching different shows, because I thought Laura’s Karen was a riot. But you’ll be pleased to hear that her arc will come to an end after just one more episode. (Some ignoramus originally reported that she was booked for five episodes, which couldn’t have been farther from the truth. Nothing pisses me off more than sloppy journalism.)

Question: Got any good gossip on Law & Order: SVU? –Laura
Ausiello:
The best: Mariska Hargitay is expected to make a complete recovery and will (hopefully) be back to work at the end of the month. The news isn’t so rosy for one of her co-stars, however. Exec producer Neal Baer tells me that "someone bites the dust" this May.

Question: How about some Bones scoop? –Amy
Ausiello:
The March 26 episode is a big one for Tamara Taylor’s Cam, who discovers that her ex-boyfriend has been murdered. "This was the love of her life," explains exec producer Hart Hanson. "She lived with him for two years and raised his daughter. She now has to go back and tell the now-16-year-old daughter — who doesn’t remember her — that her father is dead. It’s a very emotional episode for us. And Tamara is brilliant in it."

Question: i want to see some privets parts of you. –nicol
Ausiello:
Stand in line.

Question: I need a Heroes scoop. Got anything juicy? –Aled
Ausiello:
Consulting producer Bryan Fuller is putting to rest rumors that Ali Larter wants off the show. "She’s not going anywhere," he tells me. "I’ve never seen somebody so committed to the show as Ali, and the show is absolutely committed to Ali." Fuller says he jumped at the chance to pen an upcoming episode (No. 20) that focuses on Larter’s Tracy. "If you look at the ‘Fugitives’ arc, it all kind of leads up to episode 20 in a nice way," he says. "There’s a great twist in her arc." Might that twist be connected to one of the three big deaths coming up (one of which is a fake-out)? Fuller won’t budge, except to say Tracy "ends the season in a fantastic way."

Question: Jesse Spencer has already confirmed that he’ll be back on House next season, but what about Jennifer Morrison? Is she leaving at the end of this season? –Maria
Ausiello:
Not according to series creator David Shore, who insists Morrison figures into his long-term plans. But that’s not to say that someone else won’t be leaving Princeton-Plainsboro. Asked if he’s planning any staff changes heading into the fall, Shore tells me we’ll "pretty much see the same cast." Let me call your attention to the following words: Pretty and much.

Question: Do things work out for Wilson and his brother on House? –Monica
Ausiello:
If they do, we won’t find out this season. "That [story] won’t be forgotten," says David Shore. "But that is not where we’re going at the end of this year."

Question: Got any scoop on my new favorite show, The Mentalist? –Katie
Ausiello:
The season finale will revisit the mystery surrounding who killed Patrick’s wife and child. Furthermore, executive producer Chris Long teases that "something happens at the end of [the episode] that will change the way you look at Patrick." As long as you don’t change the way he looks, we’re good!

Question: We already know that Edie is going to die on Desperate Housewives. What else can you tell us? –Jason
Ausiello:
Orson’s antics will lead Bree to seriously contemplate the D-word. Also, the Dave Williams (Neal McDonough) saga will take a crazy turn when it becomes clear that the psycho has been targeting the wrong Wisterian!

Question: It’s been weeks since you’ve given us something on the Veronica Mars movie. Can you help a fan in desperate need of some good news? –Elise
Ausiello:
Progress has been made! "I pitched [it] to Joel [Silver]," Rob Thomas reports. "He seemed to really like the pitch. Waiting to hear whether he can get The Powers That Be at Warner Bros. to take a chance on it. If they say no, we’re out of luck, as the studio owns the rights. There’s really nowhere else I can take it." Let’s focus on the positive, shall we? Joel liked the pitch! Woo-hoo!

Question: I’m sure you’re not going to tell us who kicks the bucket on the Big Love finale, but could you perhaps tell us how? Murder? Suicide? Falling toilet seat? –Ava
Ausiello:
Su****a**on?

Question: Got any 24 scoop? Please tell me there’s some Jack and Renee romance on the horizon! –Emily
Ausiello:
Hey, Renee’s still romantically attached to Larry, although probably not for much longer. I’m told a shocking turn of events will further test their already strained relationship.

Question: For the sake of my eyes, please tell me that Ryan and Rebecca on Brothers & Sisters will not shack up. –Jennifer
Ausiello:
Sorry, but they’re shacking up (as in moving in together; not sure if it’ll turn romantic.) Speaking of Ryan, I hear the little bastard is hiding something.

Question: April 7 is a long way away. Gimme some good Fringe scoop to ease the pain. Please? –Kelli
Ausiello:
"Peter’s shady past will catch up with him," reveals exec producer Jeff Pinkner. "Specifically the work he was doing in Iraq at the start of the series. Those criminal doings will have direct consequences to his work on the Fringe team." Got anything else, Mr. Pinkner? "Olivia will learn more about the experiments done to her as a child with the drug Cortexiphan. She’ll also meet a man who underwent the same experiments as a child — but [he] can’t control the dangerous results." Got anything else, Mr. Pinkner? [Crickets] Guess not.

Question: Got any Gossip Girl/Jenny Humphrey scoops? –Giovanni
Ausiello:
According to exec producer Stephanie Savage, Dan’s kid sis "has a big Blair, Mean Girls story for the end of the season that also ties in with the Rufus/Lily story. And you will see that a new course has been charted for Jenny Humphrey in the fall."

Question: Do we know anything about Gossip Girl‘s prom episode? –Charisma
Ausiello:
Only that No Doubt will be performing, just not in this decade and not as No Doubt. "No Doubt is going to be playing in our ’80s flashback/[spin-off] episode," reveals Stephanie Savage. "They’re playing an up-and-coming ’80s band."

Question: Will we ever meet Harry’s real son on 90210? –Christopher
Ausiello:
Not this season. And probably not next, either. Newly crowned show-runner Rebecca Rand Kirshner Sinclair says "there was an overabundance of adoption-centric stories when I came to the show. And I didn’t feel like we could tell the story of the real son on the heels of the imposter son, because the issues that they would be going through would be too similar. So I don’t think there’s a place for that this year, but that’s definitely something that’s out there." Speaking of 90210, I hear the first new episode back is nuts. And I mean that in a good way.

Question: Please tell me Chloe isn’t dying on Smallville. –Ken
Ausiello:
Sorry, but I will have no further comment on the Smallville deaths. I’ve already said too much. (Pssst: Check my Twitter  feed in the coming days for a clue!)

Question: Your frenemy is reporting that a major character will be killed on Lost this season. Is this the same character you’ve been referring to? –Pamela
Ausiello:
Sure isn’t. The death I’ve been teasing is merely major-ish. This new one’s major sans the ish.

That’s a wrap! Send questions/anonymous tips/more questions to ausielloscoop@ew.com. Oh, and you might want to start following me on Twitter. You never know when I’m going to tweet an exclusive scoop or two. (Let me know if I’m driving home this Twitter thing too hard, k?)

Scoop: Ashley Jensen exits 'Ugly Betty'

Categories: Ugly Betty

Ashleyjensenuglybetty_l
Ashley Jensen is leaving Ugly Betty at the end of the season, and I know this because… she was just cast as a series regular in the CBS comedy pilot Accidentally on Purpose!

A rep for CBS/Paramount confirms that Jensen is joining the cast of Accidentally, which revolves around a San Francisco movie critic (Jenna Elfman) who finds herself “accidentally” pregnant after a fling with a much younger man.

Jensen’s Betty departure hardly comes as a surprise. The actress was less than thrilled when Betty moved its production from Los Angeles to New York. In fact, Jensen was the only cast-member not to relocate to the Big Apple full-time — making for one hellish cross-country commute. Add to that the fact that she was barely visible on Betty this season and you have the makings of what an ABC insider calls “a completely mutual” parting of the ways. (BTW, props to my Frenemy for making my story look extremely dated first reporting Jensen’s exit back in January.)

“While we’re sad that Ashley will not be returning next season as a series regular, she is still a member of the Ugly Betty family,” Ugly Betty exec producer Silvio Horta said in an exclusive statement. “So don’t be surprised if you see Christina pop back up in Betty’s life.”

Thoughts on a Jensen-less Betty? Sound off below!

Casting scoops: 'ER', 'Grey's,' 'Medium,' and more 'Grey's'!

Balthazargetty_l
What would a Monday Wednesday be without a fresh batch of mostly-exclusive casting scoops? A pretty dull Monday Wednesday.

•    There’s life after Brothers & Sisters for Balthazar Getty, who has inked a deal to guest star in an episode of NBC’s Medium directed by his good friend (and Medium star) Patricia Arquette. He’ll play a wealthy real estate magnate whose wife goes missing. Ironically, the ep will air in the spring, right around the time Getty makes his final appearance as a series regular on B&S. What a coinky-dink!

•    Marilu Henner is the latest name actor to join ER‘s all-star finale on April 2. The Taxi alum will play the mother-of-the-groom from hell whose antics land her and her future daughter-in-law in the hospital on their big day.

•    Amy Madigan is reprising her role as Seattle Grace’s on-call shrink next month on Grey’s Anatomy, only this time it’s not Meredith she’ll be psychoanalyzing, it’s Owen (Kevin McKidd). As I teased in last week’s Ask Ausiello, the ex-military doc’s post-traumatic stress disorder will flare up, causing him to physically hurt Cristina. Also returning to Grey’s is Callie’s dad, played by Hector Elizondo. Pops, er, pops up in April and is shocked to discover that his daughter is now into girls.

Ratings: 'The Mentalist' repeat fares well against 'American Idol'

Categories: TV Biz, TV Ratings

As expected, a two-hour American Idol triumphed on Tuesday as the top 13 did their best to vaguely imitate Michael Jackson. Meanwhile, a repeat of CBS’ The Mentalist pulled in a very impressive 14.2 million viewers — a 10 percent bump over the audience for last week’s repeat, which also aired against Idol. Like last week, The Biggest Loser: Couples had less viewers than usual during its 8-9 p.m. hour, but did increase viewership by 15 percent over its second hour.

'In the Motherhood': ABC needs you!

Categories: TV Biz

If your kid did the darnedest thing today, you might want to let ABC know all about it. The network’s upcoming series In the Motherhood — a comedy about a divorced mom (Cheryl Hines), her free-spirited neighbor (Megan Mullally), and one particularly perfect parent (Jessica St. Clair) that bows March 26 — is counting on viewers to submit embarrassing tales of parenting woe to help fill the episodes. Since the franchise already had a fan base (it started as a webisode series starring Chelsea Handler and Leah Remini, sponsored by Suave and Sprint), ideas have been coming in droves. To wit: One scatterbrained mom wrote in to recount the time she accidentally put a wine cooler in her kid’s lunch box.

Viewers get a screen credit if their anecdotes are used. “We like using them,” says executive producer Jennifer Konner, who admits, “It makes our lives easier.”

Jessica Simpson: Computer wiz?

Categories: TV Biz

If that whole singing thing doesn’t work out, Jessica Simpson may have a future in computer repair. For CBS’ April Fools’ Day special I Get That a Lot — in which celebs like Heidi Klum, Mario Lopez, and Ice-T try to hide their identities while assuming everyday jobs — Simpson proved surprisingly adept at playing “one of only 4 percent of the population who’s a computer wizard,” says CBS exec Jack Sussman.

“A lot of people knock her, but you have to be good to do this. Her timing is natural, her delivery is strong, and she totally gets it.” The sexy/geeky glasses didn’t hurt either. But then, anything beats an ill-fitting pair of mom jeans.

Exclusive: 'Trace,' 'Case' knocking at death's door?

Categories: Cold Case

Withouttracecoldcase_l
It’s time to update your bubble show scorecard.

Multiple sources confirm that cost-conscious CBS has informed the producers of Without a Trace and Cold Case that the long-running procedurals are facing possible cancellation come May.

“They no longer have the type of ratings that justify the massive overhead,” points out an Eye source, who adds that the Trace and Case bean counters at Warner Bros. are looking for ways to trim costs and avoid getting the axe. That includes convincing the casts of both shows to take salary cuts — or at the very least forfeit their annual raises. (As I reported last month, CBS is implementing a similar salary freeze at most of its in-house dramas.)

But even if new figures can be negotiated, the insider stresses that “it’s not a given that either show will be back.” Reps for CBS and Warner Bros. declined to comment for this story.

On the bright side, at least we don’t have to worry about perennial bubble candidate-turned-hit How I Met Your Mother this year! At least I don’t think we do. We better not.

Anyway, what say you, Trace/Case fans? Are you going to let these shows go without a fight? Well, are you?
