Exclusive: Is 'Housewives' killing off Orson?

Housewivesmarciakyle_l
"Marc Cherry just told me that I go up in a plane in the finale and my parachute doesn’t work. Do you think that means something?"

What it means is that Kyle MacLachlan is maintaining a very healthy sense of humor about rumors that his Desperate Housewives days are numbered.

All joking aside, MacLachlan — who was among the Wisteria Laners at Saturday’s Desperate Housewives event at PaleyFest ’09 — admits he’s anxiously awaiting word on what the future holds for Orson. "I don’t know Orson’s fate for sure, although I am pretty sure I am scheduled to be back next season," he says. "I like these rumors because they keep people guessing… I want to come back for sure. I love this show and I think that Orson has gotten interesting again."

It’s that, ahem, interesting place that has fueled buzz that Cherry is writing
Orson into the kind of corner lesser villains would have trouble
escaping from. And according to a DH insider, upcoming events
(including Bree’s decision to divorce him) will further isolate the
character.

MacLachlan acknowledges that Orson has entered a bleak period. "He
is in a very dark place right now. His kleptomania and need to punish
Bree and the others around him essentially caused Edie’s crash, and it
may be responsible for more tragic and bad events. It will come to
a head and I am not sure if Bree and Orson’s marriage can survive all
this. But he isn’t evil. I just think he is pushed to the breaking
point. I don’t think Orson is like Dave. He isn’t nuts, but he is very
tired and very angry."

What do you think? Is Orson beyond redemption — especially when you consider
this isn’t his first time at the loco rodeo (see also: running Mike
over)? Or do you agree with MacLachlan that a cuckoo Orson presents far more storyline possibilities than a sane one? Sound off below! (Reporting by Carrie Bell)

OH LORD NO…PLEASE HE IS ACTUALLY INTERSTING…and bree already went through loosing a husband…its time for lynette to loose hers.

To be honest, I think this whole storyline of Orson’s kleptomania has been kinda stupid. It just seemed like a really desperate attempt to give Bree and Orson a story. I’ve never really cared for Orson so I probably wouldn’t care if he dies, but the problem with killing him is that they’ve already killed off Bree’s former husband Rex. Then they killed off her pharmacist boyfriend (forgot his name). So killing Orson would just be repetitive. I guess they should keep him, but give him a better storyline instead of kleptomania.

No offense to Kyle, because this is about the writing, but I’ve never liked the character of Orson. Bree needs a foil, not a patsy. They got rid of Rex and the daughter, and turned Andrew into an ally. Bree is at her best when she has a worthy adversary.

  • kellen

fine with me if they kill him off. he’s a waste of space on the show

  • debi

Send them all away with him. Then bring Edie back for a new spinoff show of her own.

  • Buffy Freak

If the best they can do is make him a klepto, then killing him off would be just fine.

  • paige

eh. they’ve already f**ked up his character- might as well get rid of him… i love kyle though… why dont he make movies with David Lynch anymore??? oh they can soo send Orson to the Black Lodge and then bring Good Cooper back!

I like Orson just fine. He’s imperfect, sometimes to the extreme, but at least he’s interesting and a believable foil for Bree. Tom Scavo, on the other hand, is about the most dreadful, boring, and irritating character on the series. His continued presence on the show makes me long for the days of Betty Applewhite. Marc Cherry is very talented–a gifted writer, for sure–but Tom and Betty are the most woefully underwritten characters in all five seasons of “Desperate Housewives.”

Kyle likes Orson ? They have made him the most idiotic character on the show. This latest storyline is appaling. Unless they give him something to do except being a klepto – then it’s time for him to go !

  • XSE Drake

Orson should end his season by bashing his head into a mirror and repeatedly aping “How’s Annie?”

Love Kyle. Tolerate Orson. Dune, Twin Peaks, Sex & the City.. all better roles for him. Orson’s just a walking door mat at this point.. rather boring. I know Kyle’s got a kid now and probably likes the steady pay check, but….

  • Jimmy

Would it really hurt the series if Orson was gone. The character has become so boring that I don’t even care what happens to him. MacLachlan is a great actor, but he’s wasted on this series. Much like Dana Delany. With Edie gone maybe Cherry can figure out something for Katherine to do other than a sad, doomed relationship with Mike.

I miss the Orson who first got with Bree- who gave her her first O and was so supportive and giving. Now he’s a big needy tool. Change him back, redeem him somehow. I’m not a fan of how they keep killing Bree’s exes, if they’re splitting them up, at least let him have a divorce like a regular dude and klepto off in to the sunset. Mike got to stick around after a divorce. And if they’re sticking with ‘Orson is pitiful’ story lines, nothing says loser like a guy who puts his wife through the crap he pulled on Bree and then goes after her for big money spousal support. She did write a best seller with a very successful business and he IS financially dependent on her (very ironic since that’s supposedly what is making him act like such a putz) Here’s hoping he lives another season with a better story line ;)

  • Dorian

There is another season of this show? Seriously? WOW- who the hell watches this crap

  • Joanne

Bring Orson back… I adore him.. the fact the Bree might be getting with Karl kind of makes me angry.. I love Karl but no… SO ORSON PLEASE COME BACK
