Ratings: 'American Idol' dominates Tuesday

Categories: TV Ratings

American Idol‘s viewership was back up from last week’s drop, gaining the 7 percent it had lost, and easily winning Tuesday evening. Sliding its way into second was the Dancing With the Stars results show, which was also up slightly from last week. Fox’s Fringe and ABC’s Cupid stayed steady. And even though CBS had 8 and 9 o’clock reruns (NCIS and The Mentalist), the network still came in second for the night in total viewers.

Rod Blagojevich to join 'I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!'

Categories: TV Biz

Pending court approval, ousted Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich will join the cast of I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! when it bows in June on NBC, the network announced Tuesday. The show, which is based on the U.K. format of the same name and previously ran for one season on ABC in 2003, drops 10 celebrities into a Costa Rican jungle to face challenges. NBC has not announced the rest of the cast. I’m a Celebrity will run nightly for four weeks in June.

Blagojevich, who was taped allegedly trying to sell Barack Obama’s Senate seat, recently pleaded not guilty to charges of racketeering conspiracy, extortion conspiracy, attempted extortion, making false statements, and wire fraud. If convicted, Blagojevich faces up to 30 years in prison.

Amazon.com's gay-book debacle: Could a hacker have been behind it all?

Categories: Books, Rumor Police!, Tech

Days after authors and readers noticed that Amazon.com had removed sales rankings from thousands of gay- and lesbian-themed books — in a move Amazon chalked up to a "ham-fisted cataloging error" — bloggers began speculating that hackers, not Amazon, were actually the ones responsible for censoring the titles. In fact, a notorious hacker known as Weev has even claimed to be behind the mishap, writing in a livejournal entry that he hired third-world workers to flag the material as objectionable en masse.

But would such an attack even be possible? According to a computer-security expert, yes. John Pironti, the President of IP Architects, LLC, who is familiar with Weev’s work, says it is "possible, plausible, and capable. It actually makes a lot of sense. And it [wouldn't be] the first time we would have seen it done." (An Amazon rep, however, still maintains it was a cataloging error.)

But stripper-turned-memoirist Craig Seymour (a former EW.com staffer) has a hard time believing a hacker is at fault, since he saw his sales rank removed by Amazon, "the world’s most consumer-centric company," months ago. "It’s not consumer-centric if you’re not allowing people to search for books by title and author from your homepage," says Seymour, who was told by a customer service rep in February that his gay memoir, All I Could Bare, had been booted because it had been classified as an "adult product." "I’m not saying they should have a flash of me stripping across the homepage when you log on. But if somebody specifically looks up [my book], they should be able to find it."

Hacker or no, the company claims the glitch will be fixed "as quickly as possible." Not that spurned authors are quick to forgive. Even though Seymour’s sales rank was restored four weeks after he issued his first complaint, he says the shunning still stings, especially since bookstores were the only outlets to provide homosexual-centric information and entertainment when he was growing up in the 1980s. "Bookstores for me were always sort of a safe place," he says. "And now, of course, Amazon is like a big virtual bookstore, and to feel booted out of that, it’s hurtful in terms of the role that books have played in my life and in the lives of a lot of gay and lesbian people."

'Jon & Kate Plus 8' star attracts hundreds of fans to California book signing

Categories: Books, Television

Jonkatebooksigning_l Hundreds of Jon and Kate Plus 8 fans converged on a three-story Barnes and Noble store in Glendale, Calif., Tuesday to meet series star Kate Gosselin, who is crisscrossing the country to promote her second book, Eight Little Faces: A Mom’s Journey. The bookstore, about eight miles outside of Los Angeles, was the first stop in Gosselin’s multi-city tour (she’ll be in Huntington Beach, Fresno, and San Francisco later this week), and close to 400 people waited for hours to get a brief audience with TLC’s famous mother of eight.

Many women were so determined to get a photo with Gosselin that a book with her signature seemed of little importance to them. But the occasional fan did manage to use her oh-so-brief time in Gosselin’s presence to shower effusive praise. “I make my boyfriend miss Heroes so I can watch your show!” exclaimed one rabid fan. “You’re so beautiful!” said another. “You are like Hollywood!” The tall and slender Gosselin, who was wearing white pants, a leopard-spotted blouse, and three-inch cork heels, just smiled and said “thank you.” She always made sure, however, to say something special about any baby who came her way. “Just drop her off with me!” she said of a three-week-old baby named Morgan. “I’ll give her back at night.”

Many fans even brought presents, ranging from a tome titled The Book for People Who Do Too Much to eight personalized gift bags for Gosselin’s children (pictured). Everything Gosselin received — including plenty of heartfelt notes — was carefully set aside for her (and her small staff) to review later. Remarkably, no one seemed to inquire about Gosselin’s husband, Jon, during the 90-minute book signing, though one fan did ask where her “little ones” were. “Back at home,” replied Gosselin, who is touring alone.

Gosselin’s second book (the couple’s first, Multiple Blessings: Surviving to Thriving With Twins and Sextuplets,
was a New York Times best seller) is 44 pages long and filled with
photographs, Scripture quotations, and brief notes about giving birth
to so many kids. (Sample: “Early in my pregnancy, when we
learned I was carrying multiples, I felt insignificant and unworthy to
mother so many children. As time passed we realized God did not make a
mistake when he gave us six instead of just one. For us this was the
beginning of learning to trust God completely.”) One photo is from the
hospital and shows Gosselin’s very large belly. (“Having them so close
to me, I learned each of their personalities — even before they were
born.”)

The Gosselin family has already begun production on the fifth season of Jon & Kate Plus 8, which returns to TLC on May 25. The family has a green special airing April 19.

Exclusive: '24' moving to New York!

Categories: 24

Kiefersutherland24_lAfter six seasons in Los Angeles and one in D.C., Jack Bauer is taking his one-man show to Broadway!

Sources confirm to me exclusively that 24 will be relocating to New York next season — at least on screen. (The show will still be primarily shot in Los Angeles, with some NY location footage mixed in.)

Production on Day 8 gets underway next month, but already details are emerging. In addition to the move to the Big Apple, CTU will make a comeback under the leadership of a new, yet-to-be-cast male character by the name of Brian Hastings. Described as an MBA type with a razor sharp intellect, Hastings will be joined by two new twentysomething agents (one male, one female), as well as Mary Lynn Rajskub’s returning Chloe.

As previously reported, Slumdog Millionaire‘s smarmy game show host, Anil Kapoor, is joining the cast as Arman Hashemi, a Middle Eastern leader on a peacemaking mission in the U.S. Casting is underway for the roles of his brother and wife.

Thoughts on 24‘s move to the city that never sleeps? Comment away below!

Ratings: 'Dancing With the Stars' wins Monday in a waltz

ABC’s Dancing With the Stars pranced its way to a ratings victory on Monday night, with 19.1 million viewers, according to preliminary overnight ratings. The network had less happy results with its fledgling 10 p.m. series Castle. The Nathan Fillion starrer dipped to 7.6 million viewers, a drop of 1.7 million from the previous week. Still, the show wound up tied with NBC’s Medium, the most-watched program of the night for the Peacock network.

Scoop: Fox set to terminate 'Sarah Connor Chronicles'

Categories:

Terminatorsarahconnor_l
Resist the urge to nuke the messenger, but multiple sources are telling me that Fox will not be renewing Terminator: The Summer Glau Sarah Connor Chronicles for a third season.

“It’s done,” maintains a source close to the show. “Everyone has pretty much known for a couple of weeks.” Adds a network insider: “Consider it canceled.”

The one bright spot? Despite horrific ratings, Fox isn’t ready to declare SCC dead and buried — at least not officially. “No decision has been made yet,” insists a network rep. “We will be announcing our fall schedule on May 18.”

Rough translation: It won’t be back.

Oh, I just thought of one other bright spot: At least the show went out on top creatively. Last Friday’s finale was an action-packed, closure-filled triumph. The only thing left unresolved is what Summer Glau will do for an encore. I’m thinking 24 should hire her as next season’s Big Bad.

What do you think Glau should do next? Post your career advice — and unofficial SCC eulogies — in the comments section below.

Ratings: 'American Idol' holds off a slew of new shows to win the week

Categories: TV Biz, TV Ratings

Kelliepickler_l
The week ending April 12 had an unusually large number of new shows premiere — ABC’s Surviving Suburbia and The Unusuals; CBS’ Harper’s Island; and NBC’s Southland and Parks & Recreation — but none of them could stop Fox’s American Idol, which once again took the top two spots in the Top 20. The Wednesday results show, which featured performances by Frankie Avalon, Idol alum Kellie Pickler (pictured), and Flo Rida, and saw blind contestant Scott MacIntyre go home, took No. 1 for the week with 23 million viewers, while the Tuesday performance show came in at No. 2 with just a handful fewer eyeballs — 22.8 million, to be exact.

Of the new shows, Surviving Suburbia (No. 14) and Harper’s Island (No. 19) landed in the Top 20. Suburbia drew 11.3 million viewers and was undoubtedly buoyed by lead-in, Dancing With the Stars (No. 3), which attracted 19.9 million viewers. Harper’s drew 10.2 million viewers and was also boosted by its lead-in, CSI (No. 7), which drew 16.6 million watchers. Viewership for both shows, however, dropped off sharply from those lead-ins, with Suburbia losing 43 percent of Dancing‘s audience and Harper’s losing 39 percent of CSI‘s crowd.

As for the non-Top 20 shows, Southland (No. 22) rolled in with 9.9 million viewers; the new Amy Poehler comedy, Parks & Recreations (No. 40), drew 6.9 million pairs of eyes; and The Unusuals (No. 41) attracted 6.8 million viewers.

The rest of the Top 20 — complete with full viewership numbers — is after the jump.

1. American Idol | Fox | 23.0 million
2. American Idol | Fox | 22.8 million
3. Dancing With the Stars | ABC | 19.9 million
4. NCIS | CBS | 17.8 million
5. NCAA Basketball Championship: University of North Carolina vs. Michigan State | CBS | 17.7 million
6. The Mentalist | CBS | 16.9 million
7. CSI | CBS | 16.6 million
8. Dancing With the Stars | ABC | 14.6 million
9. Criminal Minds | CBS | 13.6 million
10. House | Fox | 13.3 million
11. 60 Minutes | CBS | 12.8 million
12. CSI: NY | CBS | 12.5 million
13. Without a Trace | CBS | 12.2 million
14. Surviving Suburbia | ABC | 11.3 million
15. Survivor: Tocantins | CBS | 11.2 million
16. 24 | Fox | 11.0 million
17. The Amazing Race | CBS | 10.6 million
      Cold Case | CBS | 10.6 million

Mel Gibson's billion-dollar divorce: How bad will it be for him?

Categories: Celebrity Couples

Gibsonmoore_l_2
"It’s a billion-dollar divorce!" says celebrity divorce lawyer Raoul Felder.

Yesterday’s headlines that Mel Gibson, 53 and his wife Robyn Moore, also 53, were filing for divorce after 28 years of marriage has now been eclipsed by a handful of thornier follow-up questions. Namely, how much will the split cost the A-lister? How will it affect his reputation? Will it jeopardize the projects he has in development? And perhaps, most tantalizing of all, will it be the costliest celebrity divorce ever?

In short, the answers are: lots, remains to be seen, not likely, and almost certainly yes.

With no indication that the couple had hammered out a prenuptial agreement before their 1980 wedding, Gibson’s low-profile wife is now legally entitled to half of everything he’s earned over their nearly-three decades together, according to Felder, which could translate into roughly $500 million.

People.com estimates Gibson’s fortune to be in the neighborhood of $1 billion (The Passion of the Christ, a labor of love project he directed and produced, pulled in $600 million at the box office, alone), which puts the split on track to be the richest celebrity divorce ever. Other celeb splits with lots of zeroes include Michael Jordan paying $168 million in his 2006 divorce from his wife Juanita, Steven Spielberg’s shelling out $100 million in his 1989 split from actress Amy Irving, and Sir Paul McCartney’s $48.6 million 2008 settlement with Heather Mills.

Obviously, half of a billion is still a nice chunk of change to have left in your bank account. So don’t cry for Gibson yet. The stickier issue, however, may be whether the split will tarnish Gibson’s reputation as a devoted father (Gibson and Moore have seven kids ranging in age from 10 to 28) and a devout Christian — an image already damaged by his 2006 arrest for drunken driving and the bizarre tirade that accompanied it.

"If he was Matthew Broderick or Tom Hanks, the answer would be yes," says Felder. "But the public has been desensitized already to this fellow, so I don’t think it’s going to affect him at all."

addCredit(“Ron Galella/WireImage.com”)

Felder doesn’t expect the divorce to have much effect on Gibson’s
upcoming projects, beyond the fact that his wife will have to be bought
out for her share in them. And that could get complicated since he has
more than a dozen films in various stages of development, ranging from Mad Max 4 to an adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451.
"This divorce could be very difficult because he’s one of the few stars
who acquires properties and gets involved with them on different
levels, like directing and producing," says Felder. "These are very
hard to value, and that makes it not a simple divorce."

Still, Felder doesn’t expect that the couple will turn their split
into a drawn-out battle. "If [Moore] is like any other wife, she’ll
want her money now. She doesn’t want to be a partner in a movie that
may or may not be made 10 years from now. I think she’d want to be paid
up front. Until then, I’d try to keep it quiet. Because one of the
problems with these divorces is, if you unleash the dogs of war, you
can never put them back in the bottle again, to mix metaphors. But who
knows, it may wind up being World War III — you can’t tell."

Bravo upfront: New fashion and food competitions, a 'Gossip Girl'-esque reality series, and more...

Categories: Television

At its annual upfront presentation to the media, Bravo announced its plans to take over even more of your precious, formerly productive hours with fashion and food competitions, Friends- and Gossip Girl-esque reality shows, and its own take on the oh-so-hot family-with-tons-of-kids genre. Hitting the airwaves in the coming months are:

The Fashion Show: Isaac Mizrahi and Destiny’s Child’s Kelly Rowland host as 15 designers compete in a weekly runway show (premiering May 7) judged by a studio audience. Each week’s winning garment goes on sale to viewers online, and a popular vote picks the final victor, American Idol-style.

Top Chef Masters: Instead of pitting regular old professional chefs against each other, this spin-off puts world-renowned chefs — the kind who’d normally be judges on Top Chef — through the same absurd challenges (i.e. cooking a three-course meal in a dorm room).

Launch My Line: Previously announced as Celebrity Sew-Off, this other fashion competition will pair established designers with "pop culture notables" — stylists, music producers, choreographers, and whatnot — who’ve always wanted to have their own fashion line. The winner will, yes, get his or her own line.

American Artist: Basically, Top Chef/Project Runway for artists, produced by Sarah Jessica Parker, aiming to "do for art what we’ve done for food, which is make it accessible," says programming exec Andy Cohen.

NYC Prep: Six real teens live it up, Gossip Girl style. We’re sold.

Miami Social: Bravo execs describe it as a reality Friends — seven young professionals, including an amicably divorced couple, meet in a Miami bar and dish about their lives.

Chef Academy: Award-winning French chef
Jean-Christophe Novelli moves to L.A. to open a cooking school and train
aspirants in the ways of merengues and souffles.

Design Sixx: Design team Cortney and Bob Novogratz
renovate abandoned Manhattan buildings — all while living in them.
With their six kids. With a seventh on the way.

Double Exposure: Former couple Markus Klinko and
Indrani — who work together as "one of the hottest photography teams
in music and fashion" — bicker through high-end shoots.

Kell on Earth: Our favorite part of The Hills
fashion PR maven/Lauren’s onetime boss Kelly Cutrone — lives her
glamorous life on camera while being a single mom. And, um, living with
her "platonic friend," a 20-something male Brazilian model.

Also returning for more: Real Housewives of Atlanta and Orange County, The Rachel Zoe Project, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List, Shear Genius (now hosted by Camila Alves, with Jonathan Antin as a judge), Flipping Out, Million Dollar Listing, Tabatha’s Salon Takeover, and Top Chef.

Bravo also gave a peek at its development slate today and revealed that it’s working on two new scripted
series — a bold move for the network, which is mostly focused on reality fare. Blueprint comes from Alloy Entertainment (Gossip Girl, Privileged) and Laurence Andries (Six Feet Under)
and features two best friends — one gay, one straight — who run an
architecture and design firm in New York. The other series, 30 Under 30, is production from American Dreams‘ Jonathan Prince and Murphy Brown‘s Alana Sanko. It follows a group of young characters after an influential magazine grants them up-and-comer status with that titular moniker.

Finally, the network announced it is developing a new, live series, Watch What Happens, based on the online program focused on its reality show personalities; reality series Eric B., based around celebrity event planner Eric Buterbaugh and produced by Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher; The Secret Lives of Supermodels, starring Mariel Hemingway and Maggie Rizer; Jackie’s Gym Takeover, with Work Out star Jackie Warner making over America’s gyms; and a show following former Project Runway contestant Laura Bennett.

— Tim Stack contributed to this report.

'House' spoiler alert: 'Chameron' twist revealed!

Categories: House

Houseengagement_lWarning: Stop reading if you haven’t seen last night’s House. Everyone else, onward and downward…

As I’ve been teasing for much of the past week, Chase and Cameron broke up on tonight’s House. But as I’ve also been teasing for much of the past week, there was a humdinger of a twist that followed the duo’s split: They quickly got back together and engaged!

Holy bait and switch, Batman!

I know what you’re thinking: Does this mean Jesse Spencer will make good on the promise he made earlier this year to up and quit should the day come when Cam and Chase march down the aisle? What?! You don’t recall him making such a threat? Allow me to copy and paste his exact quote again:

“If there is [a very special Chase-Cam wedding episode], I’m out. I’ll walk. I’m
freaking done. I think they are wary about getting into too much
relationship stuff. It’s a procedural show at its core. That’s why
people like it. That’s why I like to watch it.”

Hmm… was Spencer just being his usual silly self or does he know something about where the Cam-Chase story is headed that we don’t? Interestingly, Spencer also went on to predict that due to “[exec producer] David Shore’s general disdain for life, you can rest
assured that what we won’t be doing next season is getting happy. You
won’t see Chase and Cameron making a home and having babies and other
greeting card stuff.”

Added Jennifer Morrison: “We’ve been happy for way too long for this
show. Something is probably coming. I can’t imagine that some
happy-go-lucky fairy tale is in store for Chameron. I think [David Shore] will
probably find some very unique bizarre way to make us miserable.”

Whatever happens next (bachelor party!), I would advise Chameron fans to enjoy their favorite couple’s pre-honeymoon honeymoon period while it lasts. I would also advise them to answer the following Qs in the comments section: Was the episode everything
you hoped it would be and more? Do you think their engagement will lead
to an actual wedding? Was Cameron being honest about her feelings (or lack thereof) for House? Do you hope Amber’s ghost sticks around at least as long as Denny’s did? Sound off below!

'24': Howard Gordon talks about the return of Kim Bauer

Categories: TV Biz

Interested in intel on the return of Kim Bauer (Elisha Cuthbert)? You should know that the 24 producers decided to welcome back Jack’s daughter — who’s no stranger to life-threatening situations, terrorist- or cougar-based — only after cautious consideration. “Kim has been easily targeted and lampooned by fans, so we had to do it very carefully,” says exec producer Howard Gordon. “Elisha was as sensitive to this as we were.”

And what should viewers expect from the comeback Kim? Now the mother of a daughter named Teri (after her own mom), Kim resurfaces tonight in a story tied to Jack’s battle with his deadly disease. “Their relationship was far from healed the last time we saw her, so the capacity for that emotional rift to be healed was the emotional center of bringing her back,” says Gordon, noting that Kim will stick around for the rest of the season. “She’s not a victim or someone who’s going to cause Jack any harm. She tries to save his life…. We took a few stabs at different ways to bring her back, and we think we finally found a way that fans will really appreciate — and, more importantly, that Jack will appreciate.”

Ratings: NBC better off without 'Kings' on Sunday

Categories: TV Ratings

NBC boosted its Sunday night ratings by booting big-budget drama Kings off the schedule. In its place, a two-hour Dateline snagged 6.4 million viewers (as opposed to the mere 3.6 million Kings sired last week), helping lead-out Celebrity Apprentice (7.9 million) score an extra 900,000 watchers. CBS won the night with the Masters Golf Tournament leading into its usually strong primetime lineup (though the numbers in the chart below are slightly skewed because the tournament ran over).

As for the rest of the weekend, ABC ruled Saturday with the annual Easter weekend airing of The Ten Commandments (6.8 million), and CBS’ almost-as-powerful Ghost Whisperer/Flashpoint/Numb3rs lineup won Friday night, as usual.
