'90210' stars lament leading man's exit: 'TV is cruel'

Categories: 90210 Casting News!

Dustinmilligan_l
Dustin Milligan was conspicuously missing from Saturday’s 90210 event at PaleyFest ’09, but the actor — who was recently handed his walking papers — was on the forefront of his co-stars’ minds.

“I’m going to miss him terribly,” confessed Milligan’s leading lady, Shenae Grimes. “He is an amazing guy and an amazing actor. We would bounce ideas off each other and we could be straight up with each other. We could be like, ‘Chill with the mouth thing.’ It was nice to have that on-set camaraderie. But we will keep in touch.”

Ryan Eggold, who only just learned of Milligan’s exit, echoed those
sentiments. “It will be a bummer not to see him on set,” he said. “It’s
sad, but that stuff happerns. Shows end, they go in different
directions… I was loving doing Dirt and then the writers strike
buried us and we all got let go. You just have to accept that this will
happen from time to time. TV is a cruel mistress.”

Adding potential insult to injury for Milligan is the fact that
Milligan’s character may not even get a proper send-off; Grimes
confirms that the season’s final episodes fail to provide closure for
Ethan. “I don’t know exactly how they will explain it [next season].”
However, Milligan’s pseudo-replacement, Matt Lanter, hints that his
bad-boy alter ego will start to bring out Ethan’s dark side as
the season winds down. “[Liam] is going to start influencing the other
kids — specifically Ethan — and not in a good way,” he revealed. “We
have a Habitat for Humanity episode [coming up] and I take Ethan on a camping trip
and Liam gets Ethan into some trouble.”

Bye, George! Is 'Grey's' killing off T.R. Knight?

Categories: Grey's Anatomy

Greysanatomytrknight_l
Whatever cliff-hanger Grey’s Anatomy has in store in its May 14 season finale, it’ll probably pale in comparison to the one T.R. Knight is experiencing in real life.

Last fall, the actor — frustrated by his lack of airtime — asked to be released from his multiyear Grey’s contract. Now, as I first reported in Ask Ausiello, his wish may be granted by an upcoming story line that finds (MAJOR SPOILER ALERT) George marching off to war as an Army medic. Just as the season wraps up, George gets injured in the line of duty, leaving his fate up in the air for viewers — and even Knight himself. “T.R. doesn’t know whether George lives or dies,” explains a source close to the show. “And, as a result, he doesn’t know whether or not he has to come back next season.”

Legally speaking, Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes has until
mid-June to decide whether to drop Knight — and all indications are
she will use every last second of that time. Some are suggesting she
may be forcing Knight to sweat it out as payback for wanting to jump
ship. (The two have had a strained relationship since the Isaiah
Washington blowup in 2006.) While Knight’s rep and Rhimes both declined
to comment, a Grey’s insider scoffs at such a notion. “At the
end of the day, Shonda is going to do what’s best for the show,”
maintains the source. “Everything else is just idle gossip.”

What do you think is best for the show at this point: Cutting Knight loose via a season-ending tragedy, or forcing him to return next season for an indeterminate period of time (thus dragging out this off screen soap opera even longer)? Sound off below!

Ratings: 'Southland,' 'Parks & Recreation' score decent debuts

Categories: TV Ratings

On a Thursday night when most shows — Survivor, Bones, In the Motherhood, Samantha Who?, The Office (which aired two new episodes), 30 Rock — were down from their season averages, CBS won the ratings race thanks, of course, to CSI. As for the evening’s much-publicized new programs, NBC’s cop drama Southland nabbed a respectable 9.7 million pairs of eyes in ER‘s old 10 p.m. slot. CBS’ limited-run Harper’s Island lost nearly 6 million viewers from its CSI lead-in, garnering 10.5 million folks, also at 10 p.m. And NBC’s Parks & Recreation drew 6.8 million people at 8:30 p.m., even though it followed an episode of The Office that had 7.2 million watchers and came before another Office that boasted 8 million viewers.

'Dollhouse': Fox won't air 13th episode, but show could still go on

Categories: TV Biz

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog star Felicia Day set off a Joss Whedon-fan panic this afternoon when she tweeted “Found out my Dollhouse ep, #13 isn’t gonna air. Only on DVD. Such a great part too. Thx Fox. :(

It’s true. Fox bought and paid for 13 hours of Dollhouse (from sister company 20th Century Fox), one of which turned out to be the scrapped pilot that Whedon wound up reshooting. Which means Day’s episode, “Epitaph One,” is the 14th — which the network didn’t buy. And isn’t going to buy. “We currently do not have plans to air ‘Epitaph One,’” says a Fox source, who added that this decision does not reflect the network’s feelings about the show or whether Dollhouse will be renewed. An official announcement about Dollhouse’s possible return for next season will be made at the network’s upfronts in May.

But don’t be too sad, Whedonites. The episode will be on the DVD, and as far as the show’s mythology goes, “Epitaph One” is, according to the source, less a conclusion and more of a branch into another direction: “‘Omega’ was and is the proper season finale.”

Ratings: 'American Idol' scores, 'The Unusuals' struggles on Wednesday

The American Idol results show dominated Wednesday night’s ratings, as usual, and the CBS lineup put in some typically solid results. But there was little good news for ABC, whose sitcoms Scrubs and Better Off Ted lost half a million viewers from last week. Lost, too, was down 14 percent from last week, and the debut of the cop series The Unusuals drew a mediocre 6.8 million viewers (88 percent of its lead-in audience from 9 p.m.’s Lost). Fox’s Lie To Me hit another all-time low in total viewership, while NBC’s Life was down 25 percent from last week’s new episode.

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'NCIS,' 'House,' 'Grey's,' 'Numb3rs,' 'Fringe,' 'Melrose Place,' and more!

Askausiellohouse_l Question: Seems like forever since Gibbs had a love interest on NCIS. Any scoop about that please? –Maya
Ausiello:
There’s a chance he’ll see some action later this month when he travels out west to meet the crew of the NCIS spin-off. As exec producer Shane Brennan tells me, sparks will fly between Gibbs and Louise Lombard’s character, Lara. "Gibbs and [Lara] have some past history that goes back a long, long way," he teases. "And quite clearly, Gibbs is not very keen to actually fly to Los Angeles and work with her — particularly when she’s given the lead on the case." Brennan adds that it’s not immediately clear whether the baggage they share is romantic in nature, "but it is resolved over the two-part episode. The audience will find out exactly what it is, and I can guarantee no one is going to guess what the connection is."

Question: You said that there would be some major Tony-Ziva action coming up on NCIS, but, so far, nada! What gives? –Shoshana
Ausiello:
Exec producer Shane Brennan clearly stated last month that the "Tiva" rollercoaster wouldn’t leave the station until the April 28 episode, so I think what gives is you’re losing your mind.

Question: Any idea how the new Melrose Place will explain what the hell happened to Sydney? If she didn’t go six feet under, where did she go? –Dave
Ausiello:
I’ve got two words for you: Women’s. Prison.

Question: Kutner’s death on House didn’t quite shock me, but it did have an emotional punch. My question: Does his death mean we won’t be seeing Amber this season? –Shane
Ausiello:
You’ll definitely be seeing Amber this season, the only question is when. Hey, check out the tantalizing teaser Fox just sent out for the April 27 episode: "House’s lack of sleep starts to play tricks on his mind, but he finds insomnia may be a gift instead of a burden." Hmmm…..

Question: Can you please give us a hint about the twist that follows Cameron and Chase’s forthcoming breakup on House? –Ronnie
Ausiello:
It involves a piece of luggage belonging to Chase. (And contrary to speculation, he’s not being deported.)

Question: I’m not so much interested in the twist surrounding Chase and Cameron’s split as I am about the reason for the split in the first place. Spill! –Kelly
Ausiello:
All I’ll say is there’s some major foreshadowing in the promo for next week’s episode.

Question: givememyremote.com is hosting a "Save Chuck" rally. You might want to pass it along to your Ausholes. –Adam
Ausiello:
Ausholes. Rally. Rally. Ausholes. Take a few minutes to get acquainted.

Question: Got anything on Desperate Housewives? — Cyndi
Ausiello:
Orson must’ve contracted one of those contagious strains of kleptomania, ’cause I’m getting some fuzzy intel that Bree is about to participate in a burglary.

Question: I think it’s time for an update on T.R. Knight’s efforts to flee Grey’s Anatomy. Will he get his wish by the end of the season? –Amy
Ausiello:
It certainly sounds like Shonda Rhimes is setting the stage for his departure. A Grey’s insider is now confirming what I previously predicted: George will not only (MAJOR SPOILER ALERT) march off to war, but he’ll be wounded (perhaps mortally) in the line of duty by season’s end.

Question: I went ahead and tallied up the votes in the comments section of last week’s Ask Ausiello and an overwhelming majority of your readers want to know who’s getting married in the 100th episode of Grey’s Anatomy. What are you waiting for? Spoil it! — Craig
Ausiello:
I’ll do you one better: I’ll drop a clue into my Twitter feed in the next few days. That is better, right?

Question: I loved Ari Graynor in Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, and I’m loving her now on Fringe as Olivia’s sister. Is she in for the rest of the season or what? –Jack
Ausiello:
She’s sticking around for a few more episodes, during which we’ll learn a little bit more about her estranged hubby.

Question: Leonard Nimoy as William Bell on Fringe? In a word, awesome. How long will he be around for? –Jeremy
Ausiello:
He’ll appear in one scene in the May 12 finale and then return next season for three more episodes. I hear the character’s arc was significantly cut back to accommodate Nimoy, who was only interested in doing a handful of episodes. The moral of this story: A little Leonard Nimoy is better than no Leonard Nimoy.

Question: Your Supernatural asterisk quiz last week was just plain cruel! –Betsy
Ausiello:
You know what else it was? Wrong! Turns out I had one too many asterisks in the second word. The revised (and correct) quiz is below. Sorry for the inconvenience. As a make-good, I went ahead and filled in an extra word.

Sam learns in the season finale that ******i** ****** is the ***** **** that has ** ** broken ****** ******* can ***e.

Question: My husband and I have been debating whether or not most of the questions you get are actually real. They seem just too perfect and clever sometimes. –Alicia
Ausiello:
[Laughs] That’s a good one! I wish I had the time to sit around making up questions. I should be so lucky.

Question: I just watched the latest episode of ATV and, man, you are looking fine these days, Mr. Ausiello. Are you aware of just how hot you are? –Vanity Smurf
Ausiello:
OMG, you’re making me blush. I’m so embarrassed. What an incredibly sweet thing to say. You made my day with that, VF. Thank you.

Question: What are your top three favorite shows to watch right now? –Jeremy
Ausiello:
Lost, 90210, and The Big Bang Theory.

Question: Do you have any info on Dollhouse‘s second season chances? I’ve fallen in love with the show and I’m on pins and needles waiting to hear if I’ll get another season of it. –Mandi
Ausiello:
I wish I could share your enthusiasm. I’m trying really hard to get into this show but it’s just not happening. I actually thought the recent (and much-heralded) reboot episode was one of the weakest of the season. As far as a second season goes, I don’t have any solid evidence to back this up (aside from those anemic ratings), but I’d say it’s a long shot.

Question: I am going to see Guys and Dolls soon and was wondering if you had any tips on how I could get a Lauren Graham autograph? –Nicky
Ausiello:
Find a recent picture of me on the Internets, enlarge it, print it out, tape it to your face, and then stand outside the stage door after the show.

Question: What is your take on the series finale of Life On Mars. –Diane
Ausiello:
I admired it on an artistic level. But on an emotional level, it left me a little cold.

Question: Everyone is so worked up about the Hilarie Burton and Chad Michael Murray’s negotiations for the seventh season of One Tree Hill, but what about Sophia Bush and James Lafferty? –Adrienne
Ausiello:
James’ deal is closed. Sophia’s is not, but my OTH mole assures me that she will definitely be back.

Question: What can you tell us about Booth’s undiagnosed health issue on Bones? Does Booth have a brain tumor? David Boreanaz isn’t leaving, is he? –Rachel
Ausiello:
The answer to one of those two questions is yes.

Question: Are you ever going to be a guest on Idolatry? Or is the rumor true that you and Slezak don’t get along? –Owen.
Ausiello:
The answer to one of those two questions is also yes.

Question: How about some scoop on the most underrated show on TV: Numb3rs. –Jeffrey
Ausiello:
How’s this for some fraktastic guest casting: The May 15 season finale will feature Battlestar Galactica‘s James Callis and Everwood‘s Sarah Drew! Callis will play a charismatic sociopath who is suspected of abducting Amita. Drew co-stars as one of his followers.

That’s a wrap! Please submit questions/anonymous tips/Easter bunny sightings to ausielloscoop@ew.com. Thanks for playing!

Billy Bob Thornton tussles with radio host

Categories:

It’s every journalist’s nightmare: an interview with a star that goes horribly wrong. In an interview Wednesday morning in Toronto, Canada, on the CBC radio show Studio Q, Billy Bob Thornton refused to answer questions posed to him by the show’s host, Jian Ghomeshi, and then, when confronted by Ghomeshi, lectured the host on how to do his job. Thornton — on tour with his band The Boxmasters promoting their third album this year, Mod Billy — took offense that Ghomeshi mentioned Thornton’s film career during the introduction for the show. It’s unclear why this was such a terrible transgression, but from that point on, Thornton evaded or ignored Ghomeshi’s questions. When asked about his band being together for only two years, Thornton responded: “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” And then, when asked the question more directly, he said, “I don’t know what you mean.” It went downhill from there. The band is currently on tour with Willie Nelson, but when Ghomeshi asked Thornton, “What do you learn from Willie Nelson?” Thornton responded: “I’ve never met him.” The tension built to a confrontation, with Thornton telling Ghomeshi that the host was “instructed not to discuss” Thornton’s film career. Ghomeshi respectfully tried to resolve the situation and move on, but to little effect. At the end of the segment, when the band was supposed to play a track from their album, Thornton said the band would be performing without him because he didn’t bring his drums. He soon afterward stood up and walked out of the studio.

What’s particularly odd about this incident is that Thornton, who won an Oscar for his screenplay for Sling Blade and was once married to Angelina Jolie, is typically one the best interviews around — funny, engaging, a born storyteller and willing to psychoanalyze himself (and his costars) on the record. Given that, there’s already speculation floating around the web that Thornton was under the influence for this interview. His spokesman, Arnold Robinson, says that is flatly untrue. “Billy Bob clearly just had an issue with the guy,” Robinson says. Robinson confirms that while it’s true Thornton does not like to be asked about his movie career while he’s out promoting his band, Ghomeshi was never “instructed” to avoid the topic. “Bottom line: We don’t tell people what questions they can or cannot ask,” Robinson says. Apparently, Thornton just wasn’t in the best mood this morning, but he doesn’t seem to have had a change of heart in the hours since. When asked if there were any apologies or group hugs after the segment, Robinson laughs. “I don’t think so, no.” See the entire interview below, and read more on EW’s Music Mix.

'SVU' exclusive: NBC to replace Chris and Mariska?!

Categories: Law & Order: SVU

Lawandorder_l They wouldn’t dare.

Multiple sources are confirming that NBC is threatening to replace Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni on Law & Order: SVU if the actors persist in their demands for more money.

Last week, NBC closed a deal with L&O boss Dick Wolf for an 11th season of SVU — which, at 10.5 million viewers, remains the Peacock’s No. 1 scripted show. That opened the door to a new round of negotiations with the stars, whose $350K-per-episode contracts will expire in May. Yet a source close to the matter said talks stalled when the duo — who, like in their previous negotiations, are banding together — attempted to go after back-end profits, a perk that’s almost never granted in the L&O universe (although exceptions were made for Vincent D’Onofrio and Chris Noth).

As a result, NBC cautioned that it may be forced to replace the MVPs — a risky move considering how integral Hargitay and Meloni are
to the show. Many feel the Peacock won’t make good on its
threat (reps for the network, studio and the actors would not comment for
this story). “I don’t think in this environment, there’s any chance
they could re-launch the show with both of them gone,” says a
high-ranking exec at a rival network. “It’s a horrible time to retool a
show. They already have to change the time-slot, because it’s not going
to be airing at 10 pm next season.” At the same time, a Peacock
insider says, “I can’t imagine either actor walking away from over $7 million a
year.”

For now, Wolf is putting a positive face on the talks. Through his
spokesman, he said, “It is my fondest hope that both Chris and Mariska
will be back next season.”

What do you think? Can SVU exist without Chris and Mariska?! Cast your votes in the comments section below!

Ratings: 'American Idol' edges out CBS mainstays on Tuesday

Categories: TV Biz, TV Ratings

Total viewership for last night’s American Idol performance show was down 7 percent from last Tuesday and down 16 percent from performance night’s special Wednesday airing two weeks ago, but Fox still pulled out a narrow win over CBS. The second episode of ABC’s new romance series Cupid lost 18 percent of last week’s premiere viewership — a bit of a bigger drop than anticipated (networks expect around 10-15 percent drop from the first outing).

Look at J.J. Abrams using his fancy sci-fi connections.

After collaborating on his upcoming Star Trek reboot, Abrams has signed Leonard Nimoy to join the cast of his Fox baby, Fringe.

The 78-year-old Trek icon will play William Bell, Walter Bishop’s former lab partner-turned-millionaire founder of Massive Dynamic.

“It was a delight to work with Mr. Nimoy on Star Trek,” J.J. tells me. “The idea that
he will play the mysterious, much-referenced William Bell is a thrill.
I know I sound like a goofy fan boy, but I can’t help it: Leonard is
an icon of the genre and such a wonderful actor. To have him come on
board Fringe is a mind-blowing honor.”

The character is slated to debut in next month’s season finale and then return in the fall for an extended arc.

Ratings: 'American Idol' rules another week

Categories: TV Biz, TV Ratings

Once again, Fox’s juggernaut American Idol took the Nos. 1 and 2 spots in the ratings for the week ending April 5. There was no contest for the Tuesday performance and Wednesday results shows, which drew 24.4 million and 24.3 million viewers, respectively. For the second week in a row, the results show nearly matched the performance episode — just 100,000 viewers separated the two installments. Lady Gaga performed a version of her hit "Poker Face" on the results show, which may have convinced some viewers to tune in to the Wednesday night episode they might normally have skipped.

Elsewhere, the two-hour series finale of NBC’s ER landed the show in the Top 20 for the first time in recent memory; the medical drama rolled in at No. 6 with 16.4 million viewers. (A one-hour retrospective drew 10.6 million viewers, which was good enough for a No. 19 finish for the week.) ER, which ran for 15 seasons, garnered the highest-rated series-ender for a drama since Murder, She Wrote in 1996. Despite the fact that ER didn’t end its run at the top of the ratings heap (shows rarely do), it’s important to realize what an impact it had on television: ER was the top-rated TV drama for seven seasons (from 1994-2001) until CBS’ CSI hit its stride. Impressive!

The week featured two other Top 20 anomalies. The 44th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards show up at No. 7 with 14.8 million viewers, which was good enough to be that ceremony’s most-watched show since 1999. Also, one semifinal game of the NCAA basketball tournament — in which UNC beat Villanova — came in at No. 10 with 14.5 million viewers. (The other semifinal, between the University of Connecticut and Michigan State, aired before primetime.) The national championship game, which was telecast last night and will be included in next week’s weekly ratings report, drew 16.3 million viewers, according to fast overnight ratings. In case you didn’t know: UNC beat Michigan State for the national title.

The rest of the week was rather standard. ABC’s two installments of Dancing With the Stars did well. So did CBS’s procedurals, Survivor, and Monday night comedies, and Fox’s House and 24. The full Top 20 is after the jump.

1. American Idol | Fox | 24.4 million
2. American Idol | Fox | 24.3 million

'Grey's' scoop: 'Everwood,' 'Gilmore' stars scrub in

Categories: Grey's Anatomy

Greysanatomy_lIf Grey’s Anatomy boss Shonda Rhimes is trying to win me back over after that whole Izzie-Denny-ghost-sex debacle, mission accomplished!

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Rhimes has tapped two of my favorite actresses on the planet, Everwood‘s Debra Mooney and Gilmore Girls‘ Liza Weil, to guest star in the show’s two-hour season finale on May 14.

Mooney will play mom to Kevin McKidd’s emotionally tormented Owen, while Weil will appear as a cancer patient who crosses paths with Izzie.

Interesting piece of trivia: Weil, whose sublime work as Rory’s acid-tongued BFF on Gilmore turned many a frown upside down, has ties to Rhimes’ other show, Private Practice; her real-life husband is the equally awesome Paul Adelstein (Cooper).

All’s (almost) forgiven, Shonda!
