Scoop: Fox renews 'Lie to Me,' installs 'Shield' creator as new showrunner

This is the God’s honest truth: Lie to Me is coming back for another season.

A Fox rep wouldn’t comment, but reliable sources confirm that the network has renewed the freshman drama for a 13-episode second season. And here’s where things get really interesting: Shawn Ryan, the genius producer-writer behind The Shield and The Unit, is taking over as showrunner. Don’t interpret that to mean The Unit is dead though. I’m told if the CBS procedural returns — and it very well may — Ryan will juggle both shows.

Additionally, Fox has picked up two new shows: the comedy Sons of Tucson starring Reaper‘s Tyler Labine and the DC comic adaptation Human Target starring Mark Valley.

The net will announce its full schedule next Monday. Now excuse me while I go update my Fall TV Cheat Sheet!

Oh great one! What does this mean for Dollhouse? SOB!

  • A.D.

The American Idol Network aka FOX, renews another boring show yet strong, creative, unique shows like Dollhouse and Terminator probably won’t be renewed and will fall along the wayside like the other Fantastic shows they dumped on Friday…Firefly, Boston Public, Fastlane, Dark Angel, etc…Can’t stand FOX!

  • XK

Well, I do like the show. Although it wasn’t on my list of shows to obsess over, my wife and I watched it every week. So… that’s good. Unfortunately, the two shows I really want Fox to renew are Terminator and Dollhouse, both of which seem like utter goners.

Does that mean it’s ONLY going to be a 13-episode season or that they will make a decision on the back 9 later on?

I am so excited!! I love Lie to Me and I love Tim Roth so I’m totally happy by this news!

That’s really weird that they hired Ryan as showrunner. But, I don’t blame him since The Unit is on the bubble and he needs a steady job.

  • CandyMaize

Like XK, the 2 FOX shows that I am most interested in are ‘TTSCC’ and ‘Dollhouse’ (renewal would be really nice). And regarding ‘The Unit’ .. I’ve watched since it premiered and I’ve never missed an episode, so I really hope that CBS decides to renew it!

  • Raquel

Yeahhhhhh, so happy!!!! Love ‘Lie To Me’ !! Can’t wait!

  • AO

I’ve never seen Lie To Me, but congratulations to the fans of this show.
Hopefully there will be more renewal notices soon.

I’m a Tim Roth fan so I’m thrilled. Kelli Williams has done a great job. I could stand to see some improvement in overall execution but the potential is high and the actors have plenty of ability. I think having Shawn Ryan involved will make it a little less stilted. It has strong moments but needs consistency. For a first season, it did a good job and there’s a lot of room for growth.

Michael, with only a 13 ep pick up, what are the chances that this is to make room for a limited run of Dollhouse? @ElizaPatricia wrote that Mutant Enemy was in talks today with Fox so the timing sounds right to me…

    @Kate:
“I think having Shawn Ryan involved will make it a little less stilted… For a first season, it did a good job and there’s a lot of room for growth.”
    – I’m actually not familiar with his work, but if he does bring improvements, then I’m all for it! :)
As for doing a good job the first season: I couldn’t agree more. Glad that it’s been renewed, and I hope they’ll pick up more episodes in the future. Hopefully the show will gain some more viewers this summer.

Cool. This is a good show based on a fascinating concept, but it does has it’s problems and could definately benefit from some revamping. Besides, I’ve always loved Tim Roth, and look forward to lusting after him for at least another 13 episodes. Yow!

oh shut up about LTM being another boring show that Fox renews. If people watched TSCC than it would be renewed. and if it doesn’t get renewed its because its a boring show no one watches. Same with Dollhouse. How is LTM not a strong creative show? Go home and cry me a river.
