Fox announces fall schedule, acknowledges Whedon fans

Two new comedies and a new latenight show starring Wanda Sykes will debut this fall on Fox, followed by the addition of the new action/thriller dramas Human Target and Past Life in January. Gone are The Sarah Connor Chronicles but Joss Whedon’s ratings-challenged Dollhouse is back, along with a second season of Fringe and the first-full season run of Glee, which bows tomorrow after American Idol. To help bring in more female viewers, summer fave So You Think Can Dance gets a Tuesday and Wednesday berth this fall as a lead-in to Glee, a cheeky drama from Nip/Tuck’s Ryan Murphy about a high school show choir.

"Terminator had a nice little run," explains Entertainment President Kevin Reilly. "We did see it trailing off a bit, and ultimately we made the bet on Dollhouse. That’s it for Terminator. If we canceled Joss Whedon’s show I would have got 110 million emails from his fans today."

>As for the new comedies, Brothers stars Michael Strahan (Fox NFL Sunday) and Daryl "Chill" Mitchell (Veronica’s Closet) and follows a former pro football player who returns home to his mom’s house. The Cleveland Show is an animated spinoff of The Family Guy and focuses on neighbor Cleveland Brown (Mike Henry). For dramas, Human Target is based on the DC Comics franchise of the same name and stars Fringe‘s Mark Valley (pictured) as a for-hire heavy who’ll pull out the stops to keep his clients alive. Past Life is based on the book The Reincarnationist and stars Kelli Giddish (All My Children) as a psychologist who works with a former detective to solve mysteries. For midseason, the network will unveil the quirky family comedy Sons of Tucson from Todd Holland (Malcolm in the Middle).

Sykes’ late-night show will include sketch comedy and roundtable discussions.

Why did they move Fringe to Thursdays at 9pm? It’s not going to survive going up against Grey’s and CSI. I guess it’ll be cancelled next year, then (not to mention, I’ll be taping it because I’ll be ewatching Grey’s!).

  • el

If Dollhouse only has 13 eps, how is it both on the fall and mid-season schedules? Are we going to only get a few eps at a time? That seems like a bad idea (remember why they changed the structure of the Lost schedule??)

  • Mariah

Supernatural has survived for 3.5 seasons on Thursday nights up against Grey’s and CSI. Fringe will be fine.

  • Q!

Happy that Bones is on Thursdays.. atleast this way it wont be testing a new night during mid season…

  • cindi

OMG! Fringe up against Supernatural (screw Grey’s). HELP. This is not right. For four years no other show that I watch has been up against my boys. Ahhhhh…………

  • C C

Fringe fans are already howling over Fox moving it to Thursdays at 9, but I like the move. I think Fringe and Bones are very compatible, and I’ll bet that Fringe will be able to keep most of Bones’ audience.

Dollhouse over Terminator is a crime. I loved Whedon’s Firefly and I can understand why fans love him, but this is by far his worst television venture. There are great actors on that show but they look lost because of a lack of story. Terminator on the other hand has taken its time, built character and ended with a huge plot twist with infinite potential. Fox had a good track record this year. Fringe is the next best thing on TV (next to LOST) and Lie to Me is fantastic. However, I’m thoroughly disappointed in this move by Fox. Bad form

I’m confused. So they are doing So You Think You Can Dance in the summer and they’re going to turn around and do it again in the fall? So they’re going to be auditioning for a new season while they are doing the current season? Weird.

  • dave

Why is Fox moving Fringe to Thursday at 9? Ever heard of the saying “don’t fix what isn’t broken”? Fringe was doing just fine in its time slot on Tuesday nights. Not that I think it will perform poorly in the ratings at its new time, but I’m more upset because now it will be on at the same time as The Office and 30 Rock. Thursday has been my comedy night for as long as I can remember. I guess I’ll need to set the DVR. Annoying.

  • Kate

I am confused about the SYTYCD thing too. I was looking forward to it this summer, but are they delaying it? I kind of like it better that American Idol.

  • Show

If you’re watching Grey’s, your way too uncool to watch Fringe.

  • D2

Dullhouse over The Sarah Connor Chronicles is so wrong. It’s a victory of bad taste over good storytelling. But there’s no accounting for taste. I don’t fault FOX; I fault viewers for not adequately supporting it. But most of all–I fault the writers and the show-runner of TSSC that allowed an irredeemably boring stretch of mid-season shows to drag down the intrigue. It was an unforgiveable lapse in judgement and killed the show, IMO.

  • TJ

Looking forward to Dollhouse season 2.
Hoping that Wanda Sykes late night show = epic fail. If you watch it, you’re a tool.

  • strickens_girl

The lead-in for Dollhouse sucks. TSCC was a much better lead-in show. Fringe and Dollhouse would make more sense.

“Terminator had a nice little run,” explains Entertainment President Kevin Reilly. “We did see it trailing off a bit, and ultimately we made the bet on Dollhouse. That’s it for Terminator. If we canceled Joss Whedon’s show I would have got 110 million emails from his fans today.”
Seriously? Did he even attempt to research internet responses before committing this travesty?
Dollhouse does not have NEAR the fan support of T:SCC. Reilly’s comments are so far removed from reality, it leaves one wondering whether he even cares or is just facing some serious job burnout?
Please put someone who cares about looking into fan opinions and fan base into this guy’s job slot.
