Ratings: CBS dominates while 'Mental' and 'Hitched or Ditched' debut

Without American Idol, Fox must once again relinquish the Tuesday night crown to CBS, which easily dominated the evening even in repeats. The premiere of Fox’s scripted summer series Mental found 5.8 million viewers to finish third in the 9 p.m. hour (behind The Mentalist, TV’s No. 1 new show, and NBC’s two-hour special on TV’s funniest catchphrases). The series debut of The CW’s Hitched or Ditched, the latest reality offering from Bachelor creator Mike Fleiss, held on to roughly two-thirds of the audience that tuned in for the finale of canceled Reaper.

Although I hate the show, how does a network justify cancelling a show that gets 9.6 million viewers for repeats? Is it that expensive to produce?

Maybe Fox should create American Idol Summer Edition.

I really couldn’t get into Mental. I’ll give it another shot for sure…but I don’t know about it.

I loved Mental. I hope more people tune in. I would hate to see it canceled.

Uh…way to spin Hitched or Ditch’s abysmal numbers there.
Industry insiders confirm Hollywood Reporter’s article that ABC Studios is actively trying to sell Reaper. Syndication is a very real possiblity right now, but EVERYONE is recommending writing your affiliates! Help out! I really enjoyed Mental. I liked the Mentalist early on, but it got really boring as the series worn on. As for more American Idol – please no! I can’t stand the one we have a year as it is. It comes across as real as “wrestling”.

Mental was blech; a repeat of According to Jim would have been better. Without a Trace was a class show and will be missed. As for American Idol, please stab it with a fork and declare it done.

I really didn’t care for Mental, I was looking forward to it and the cast was good, but I couldn’t get past the thought that it was a clone of House. His boss was a takeoff of Cuddy, he sent the interns to investigate just like House would, too much of a ripoff for my liking.

AT&T said that 38 million votes came from Arkansas, a state with only 3 million people. That is closing in on half the total votes cast. Then, they retracted their statement; they realized they were causing controversy. American Idol should just post the vote totals like they have in the past; by not doing so, they are acting like they have something to hide. The contest is over; I voted for Adam, but am not upset he lost. I am upset for the fan, the voter, who watches and votes every season – their vote counts for nothing in the current way the voting process is.

I don’t think I’ll ever forgive CBS for cancelling the brilliant ‘Without a Trace.’ I hope they end up regretting their decision big-time.

  • Marie

I liked Mental. I think that this show has a lot of potential. Of course, I’m not going to get too attached. The network will probably just end up canceling it anyway.

How do you recommend a couple for hitched or ditched?
