Kyra Sedgwick talks the future of 'The Closer,' the hot Tropicana commercial, and those Madoff rumors

Categories: Television

Kyra-sedgwick_l Kyra Sedgwick really wants the hot chocolate, even though it’s mid-May and pushing 60 degrees. “I hope they have it,” she says, still breathless from the walk to one of her favorite restaurants on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The cocoa is all part of Sedgwick’s plan to squeeze as much enjoyment as possible out of her five-day jaunt home, a brief respite from shooting her TNT hit series The Closer (premiering June 8 at 9 p.m.) in Los Angeles. After four seasons as Deputy Police Chief
Brenda Johnson, she’s used to the cross-country commute between the set and her family on the East Coast — actor-husband Kevin Bacon, 50, daughter Sosie, 17, and son Travis, 19 — but that doesn’t make it any easier. And neither does the news that hot-chocolate season is over. “It’s thick and magical and sooo chocolaty,” the actress muses ruefully, before choosing an alternative: triple berry ginger pie with soy ice cream. Or, as she calls it, “sloppy seconds.”

Such is life for Sedgwick these days: pretty darn sweet — but not without a few laments. EW talked to the 43-year-old star about her sexy Tropicana commercial, life beyond The Closer, and the shock of seeing her name splashed across gossip columns courtesy of Bernie Madoff.

What’s it like being away from home for half the year? It’s gotten harder. This year there was some discussion about moving the show to New York, which was shot down for many reasons, mostly fiscal. And I’m thinking, But what about me? I’ve given so much. So we’ll see next year.

You’ve been married to Kevin Bacon for 20 years and managed to stay out of the gossip pages — until news broke that you both invested with Bernie Madoff. How did that feel? I always joked that the best thing for mine and Kevin’s careers would be for one of us to have an affair. I didn’t realize how unfunny it was until [the Madoff news broke]. Suddenly, I felt like when I walked into a room people were [whispering]. And they probably weren’t. Then they’re saying we lost everything? We didn’t lose everything, we lost a pension. Some people had it so much worse. I have such newfound empathy for people who are always on these covers, like Jennifer Aniston.

Do you pay attention to your press? My husband is a Google Alert guy. He has one on himself and me. I’m like, Dude, I don’t want to know what people are saying.

How did that Tropicana commercial come together? I’ve never done a commercial before. I’ve always been like, Meryl Streep doesn’t do commercials! But they called me and said, “What do you think?” I got scared, but then I talked to the director, Peter Arnell. And boy, it turned out beyond my wildest dreams.

You call The Closer “the most creatively fulfilling job” you’ve ever had. How long do you think you’ll stick with it after your contract’s up in two seasons? I would hate for you guys to write, “They really jumped the shark.” I mean, let’s quit while we’re ahead. It’s still great. But I don’t want to be bad.

What would you like to do after that? I would love to do a romantic comedy. I definitely think, Hurry up! Let’s do it now, while [pats her cheeks] things are still all okay here.

Exclusive: Meet House's new roommate!

Categories: House

House-casting-news_l Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the first official House scoop of the new season: Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda has been cast as House’s psych hospital roomie, sources confirm to me exclusively.

Miranda, best known for writing and starring in the Broadway musical In the Heights, will appear in at least two episodes beginning with the show’s sixth season premiere this fall.

A House insider tells me producers are looking for other “interesting actors” to populate the psychiatric facility that became House’s home in last month’s finale. So if you’re an actor who excels at riding the crazy train, forward this story to your agent ASAP.

Ladies and gentlemen, that concludes the first official House scoop of the new season.

Jay Leno attracts record number of viewers for a Friday

Categories: Television

The final telecast of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on May 29 attracted the host’s biggest audience on a Friday since he took over the gig from Johnny Carson 17 years ago. Leno’s final show not only generated the show’s best performance among adults 18-49 in 12 years, but it lured 11.9 million viewers. Overall, it was Leno’s seventh most-watched telecast ever, behind such memorable shows like that one that followed the Cheers finale in 1993 (22.4 million) and his May 1992 debut (16.1 million).

Leno’s off the air until Sept. 17, when he’ll return in the 10 o’clock hour to launch The Jay Leno Show five nights a week.

Exclusive: 'Heroes' recruits Sue Thomas, Darth Maul

Categories: Heroes

Heroes-casting-news_l The Force will be with Heroes next season.

British actor Ray Park, whose role as Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace made him an icon to fanboys far and wide, is joining the cast for a sizeable arc. Additionally, Deanne Bray (Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye, The L Word) has inked a deal to come on board for multiple episodes.

Who are they playing and how long will they be sticking around for? Keep reading for the scoop…

Little is known about Park’s role, except that he’s playing one of the colorful characters at the center of the show’s Carnivale-esque storyline. (My guess? He’s the character described in the breakdowns as “Knife Thrower.”)

Bray, meanwhile, will play a deaf love interest for one of the main Heroes. As I previously reported, the part specifically called for a deaf actress. (So much for my campaign to get Jericho‘s Shoshannah Stern the gig!)

In addition to Park and Bray, Heroes‘ fourth season will welcome Prison Break‘s Robert Knepper (as a new villain) and Californication‘s Madeline Zima (as Claire’s quirky college roommate).

Thoughts?

ATV Video: Neil Patrick Harris is in the house!

Neil Patrick Harris made off with one of my Smurfs. No lie. The How I Met Your Mother scene-snatcher and host of this Sunday’s Tony Awards dropped by yesterday to talk about, you know, life and stuff and walked away with one of my prized little blue buddies. It’s not like he stole it though. Please, each one of those guys is rigged with their own ADT alarm. No, I offered the Dream Emmy Ballot nominee a piece of my legendary collection as a thank you for giving me an awesome interview that featured three of my favorite things: exclusive scoop, HIMYM sorta-spoilers, and an in-depth discussion about the comic genius that is Cobie Smulders. If that doesn’t warrant a Smurf I don’t know what does. But don’t take my word for it. Watch the video and judge for yourselves…

P.S. Keep your eye out for more tidbits from my NPH Q&A, including his take on the when/where/how of a Dr. Horrible sequel, and the one person he feels must earn an Emmy nod this year.

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'Lost,' 'The Closer,' 'Weeds,' 'True Blood,' 'Burn Notice,' 'Fringe,' and more!

Claire-lost_l Question: I miss Claire on Lost. Emilie de Ravin is such a great actress. Will she be back for all of next season? –Kelly
Ausiello:
Yes! After sitting out last season, de Ravin will return as a full-time series regular for Lost‘s sixth and final season, Team Darlton confirms. “Damon and I are very excited to bring Claire back to the show,” says Carlton Cuse, “and even more excited for people to experience just how she will return.” And even more exciting than that? Experiencing Doc Jensen’s theory on how she’ll return. Take it away, DJ:

“Any scenario that brings Claire back to Lost must address the mysterious circumstances of her disappearance at the end of season 4, in which many of us were led to believe that she was as dead — or rather, undead — as the Ghost Christian that’s been haunting The Island since season 1. So here’s one thought: Juliet changed time in the season finale by detonating Jughead, and season 6 will tell the story of the new timeline, one in which Claire is alive. Another thought: In light of the revelation that John Locke was actually a supernatural impostor for half of season 5, perhaps in season 6, we’ll get a storyline in which Claire just emerges out of the jungle, with no memory of what happened to her — just like season 1 — and we and the castaways will be left to wonder: Is this the real Claire or another impostor infiltrating them a la Locke? Heck, maybe that’s going to be the major idea of next season: Who’s really alive and who’s really (un)dead? It really will be the fabled zombie season of Lost!” Thanks  a million, Doc!

Question: What’s the deal with Louise Lombard’s exit from NCIS: Los Angeles? I thought she was great. Are they recasting the character, or making a new one entirely? –Amy
Ausiello:
That’s TBD. My guess? They’ll introduce a new character. And as far as why Lombard got the boot, I hear Macy didn’t test well with viewers.

Question: What’s this I’m hearing about an Aushole meet-and-greet at Comic-Con next month? –Diego
Ausiello:
I can confirm that something is in the works. More details to come on Twitter!

Question: I must confess, I’m kind of loving the idea of Brian Austin Green on One Tree Hill. –Jules
Ausiello:
Well, I hope you don’t love it too much, because I’m hearing the deal may be unraveling. Word is Green’s reps got spooked by the negative spin some bloggers were putting on their client doing OTH. As a result, they may be getting cold feet. Personally, I can’t see Green walking away from a gig that could potentially fetch him north of $1.5 million. Of course, that’s the same figure Chad Michael Murray said no to, so who knows? In their defense, $75K a week — after taxes and agency fees — does not go very far these days. I know that more than anyone

Question: The forums over at TheEnvelope.com are reporting that ABC may not have submitted Pushing Daisies leads Lee Pace and Anna Friel for Emmy consideration. Is this true? –Mindy
Ausiello:
It’s true that Pace and Friel are not in the running for an Emmy this year, but don’t blame ABC. The actors — or their reps — are responsible for submitting themselves, not the networks or studios. Not sure why they chose to sit this one out. It’s certainly perplexing.

Question: Can you please give us some Burn Notice spoilers — preferably about Michael and Fiona’s relationship? –Jessica
Ausiello:
I have a hunch Fi is going to need Michael more than ever in light of this exclusive casting scoop: Lipstick Jungle hottie Paul Blackthorne has been tapped to play Thomas O’Neill, an Irishman who arrives in Miami with a longtime grudge against Fiona. He shows up towards the end of the season 3, which debuts tomorrow! BTW, Jeffrey Donovan is dropping by tomorrow for an ATV Q&A, so send those Qs to ausielloscoop@ew.com ASAP.

Question: I see Michael Rady from Greek is on the new Melrose Place. Does this mean Max is leaving? Hope so. He’s too geeky for Casey. –Jessica
Ausiello:
That question will be answered in Greek‘s June 15 season finale.

Question: Is it true that Fringe will be adding a new cast member next season? –Izebel
Ausiello:
Yes, ’tis true. Producers are currently casting a new female agent to replace Kirk Acevedo’s Charlie. The character is described as brash, outspoken, quick-witted, and capable, and possesses a “deep core belief” in the wonders of the universe. Translation: She’s a Mulder.

Question: Please give us fang bangers some True Blood scoop. I cannot wait for season 2. Will some of it take place in Dallas like the second book did? –Jessie
Ausiello:
Yep. In the new season’s fourth episode, Sookie, Bill, and their adoptive vamp Jessica (played by the awesome Deborah Ann Woll) wing it to Dallas, but there’s a surprise waiting for them at the airport. Later in the episode, an even bigger shock awaits Sookie when a, ahem, special visitor drops by her hotel room.

Question: Not that I don’t appreciate the awesome True Blood scoop we got last week, it’s just that I need, really need, scoop on Sookie/Eric. Is anything gonna happen between them? –Sofia
Ausiello:
Something happens in the first four episodes that may lead one to believe Eric has eyes for someone else (hint: it’s a dude!). But maybe I’m reading too much into it.

Question: Any news on The Closer? –Debra
Ausiello:
Big news: Someone’s leaving the show! Kyra Sedgwick reveals that “a change in the squad” will come early into the new season (debuting June 8). “We lose a squad member,” she says. “It’ll be quick and painless, and it’ll be soon.” The departure is fitting given the overarching theme of the season: change. “The first and most obvious change is [Brenda's] married,” Sedgwick says. “Which is a big thing. How do you live as an individual you defined yourself as and thought of yourself as and now you’re attached to this other person? That’s a big change for her.” Also, Brenda’s beloved cat falls ill, Provenza gets a girlfriend, and, as I previously reported, Mary McDonnell joins the cast for an arc as an internal affairs officer. “She’s the complete opposite of me; we’re at odds,” Sedgwick says. “Brenda’s always had antagonists who are men, so it’ll be great to have an antagonist who’s a woman.”

Question: Weeds hasn’t been good since Nancy torched Agrestic. Any chance that this season will be worth watching? –Meaghan
Ausiello:
I handed your question off EW to intern/Weeds addict Jeremy Medina, who just watched the first three episodes of the new season (premiering June 8). Here’s what he said: “Hi Meaghan! I agree, last season was easily the series’ worst — up until the finale shocker that revealed Nancy’s pregnancy. The new season starts off with the fallout from that announcement. Her family is pissed. Even Andy, who loves her. Nancy basically acknowledges she’s a terrible human being, but then proceeds to act like even more of one. She dumps Shane off to live with her volatile sister (Jennifer Jason Leigh) because he isn’t safe at home. She even purposely gets drunk to antagonize her Mexican drug lord boyfriend, simply because it’s the last card she can play in her epic power struggle. What will continue to make the season worth watching is to see if Nancy can win back a shred of dignity. She needs to have some sort of redemptive arc to make the show compelling again. Whether that will actually happen remains to be seen.”

Question: Any scoop on how Jim and Pam will adjust to parenthood on The Office? –Dave
Ausiello:
First we need confirmation that she is, in fact, pregnant. I mean, that’s how I interpreted that scene in the season finale, but Ed Helms has me wondering if there’s a bait and switch at play. “I don’t know exactly what’s going on there,” he told us over the weekend at the MTV Movie Awards. “There was an ambiguous hospital scene; that’s about all I know.” Translation: She’s pregnant.

Question: Is The Unit really gone? Say it ain’t so! –Elise
Ausiello:
It’s so. Sorry.

Question: Any scoop on Mariska and Chris’ contract negotiations? Are they still going to be on SVU next season? –Kae
Ausiello:
Still no official deal, but things are looking good.

Question: The season finale of Law & Order: SVU was extremely disappointing! We were all led to believe that a “major” character was going to die. I’d even read/heard it was going to be someone in the opening credits. Then it turns out to be the guy in the lab? It was so misleading! –Jill
Ausiello:
Don’t go pointing fingers at me. I strongly hinted back in April that reports of a major SVU death were greatly exaggerated. [Beat] You’re still pointing at me. [Beat] Stop.

Question: Did your rec
ent blind item have anything to do with Lauren Graham or Kristen Bell? –Elle
Ausiello:
No, but the actress in question shares a first initial with one of them.

That’s a wrap! Send questions/comments/anonymous tips to
ausielloscoop@ew.com
. Thanks for playing! (Additional reporting by Jennifer Armstrong and Jenny Sundel)

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's rep: Couple is not splitting

Categories: Misc.

Despite rumors of a split, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are not breaking up, the couple’s representative told People this afternoon. The denial was in response to a story in the National Enquirer that stated the two actors are making an “official split.” Jolie is currently shooting the political action thriller Salt in Long Island, N.Y., while Pitt is promoting Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. Sources at studios for both films tell EW.com that they haven’t noticed any tension between the couple. Jolie shot scenes for Salt today without incident. Although the Enquirer reported that the couple was icy to each other out of camera range at the Cannes Film Festival last month, a source who was in Cannes with Pitt saw no evidence of trouble in the relationship.

'Top Chef' alums Fabio Viviani, Carla Hall, and Jeff McInnis talk future projects

Categories: Books, Television

They didn’t take home the top prize, but Fabio Viviani, Carla Hall, and Jeff McInnis still might be the most memorable contestants from season 5 of Top Chef, and they are clearly taking advantage of their increased visibility: Each has an upcoming project in the works (even if they can’t yet tell us what it is). First up? Viviani’s cookbook, Café Firenze Cookbook, which will be released in late June. Viviani, Hall, and McInnis took time out of creating custom-made sundaes for Marble Slab Creamery for a spirited chat about their craziest fans, Martha Stewart, and what we can expect from them in the very near future (Hint: Is that a Fabio-helmed TV show we hear?).

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How’s life been post-Top Chef? Crazy, I’m sure.

JEFF McINNIS: Yea, crazy. Different. Crazy busy.

FABIO VIVANI: More stuff to do, no time to get it done.

You guys are still working at your respective restaurants and Carla, in your case, Alchemy Caterers. Have things gotten busier?

FV: Top Chef did help. For myself, it did help a lot. I was running a restaurant [Café Firenze] that was successful. Now it’s even busier. We increased the sales quite a bit. And plus, I have the chance to meet people that did help. I’m publishing a book, opening two more restaurants, working on some other projects, and everything’s coming along very well.

When is your book coming out?

FV: My book is coming out end of June, beginning of July. It’s the Café Firenze Cookbook. It’s a different take to the classic cookbook.

CARLA HALL: It’s written in broken English.

FV: It’s written in broken English, but it will make you cry. You’ll cry as much as you laugh. It’s funny.

CH: We’ll be the judges of that.

Are you doing a book tour?

FV: Yea, 16 cities. We’re going to hit almost 70 stores. We got a sponsor for it. We got good people behind us. The book is going to be great. It’s going to be everywhere. You think about it, you name it: Target, Wal-Mart, Costco.

How about you, Jeff? Any new projects post-Top Chef?

JM: It was a weird time to get off the show. Once we got off the show, that was whenever the market started crashing. My productivity of the restaurant I’m at—the Ritz-Carlton—it definitely went up. You just always wonder if it would have been different if everything was on an even playing field. But like Fabio, I started on a book about six months before going on the show, and then of course, once the show happened, I pushed on it real hard. I had it done. I’m working on getting it a major publisher right now….It’s called The Natural Course, and it kind of documents a portion of my life from childhood to the end, and I support local farmers. I’d say 25 percent of my book just talks about farmers themselves and about taking care of the animals and being kind to animals. I’m a firm believer of what you put in your body is what you’re going to get out of your body.

So is the book a part-memoir?

JM: Yea, I guess. The chapters go from “Farm”—my grandparents had a farm growing up on both sides of the family, so it touches on that again—and then the second chapter would be “Ocean,” [since] I grew up in Florida all my life.

It’s clear from the show that you guys all got along pretty well.

JM: Yea, no one was ever cutting anybody’s throat.

There have been rumors over the past few months that some season five-ers might get TV show deals, particularly you three. Any truth to that?

CH: Yea, maybe.

JM: I started a documentary awhile ago. The Foodie Phenomenon. I had a team. We were going through all these things I was telling you about, the Wine and Food Fest and everything, asking the question, what the hell is going on in America today? Why is everybody in the past ten years—my mother didn’t even have balsamic vinegar here in America ten years ago, but now, she’s obsessed with the Food Network and Martha Stewart and everything, and everybody’s buying cookbooks. In the past decade, America’s just exploded. So the documentary was based on that. And the documentary has fallen off. I’ll be honest. It’s hard to get backing. I’m working on two pilots, and that documentary, I think I’m going to put on hold.

What kind of pilots are you working on? Is there a theme?

JM: If I gave that away, that would be like giving the end of a book away. But look out for Fabio.

CH: You’ll see him before you’ll see us.

Any TV deals for you Fabio? We’ve been hearing the rumors for some time…

FV: There is something in the making. Of course, we can’t talk about it. But trust me, you will see it soon. There is something in the making. We can’t say who, when, how.

So I guess we’ll have to wait to find out.

FV: You won’t have to wait much. There’s not much to wait here. But something is in the making. You can say that Fabio will start laughing in the night.

It’s probably nice, though, because there are so many food networks out there now that you can pitch to.

CH: Right. I think that the project that I’m hoping to come across is something where it’s more about inspiring people. And I cook for inspiration. That’s my passion. But I would still like to inspire the person who does garden work, or who teaches, or is a doctor. I think when you see somebody who loves what they do, hopefully it inspires you to do what you love.

Some time has passed since the season 5 finale. Are you still happy about the show? Angry?

FV: I’m very happy. It’s true, they can copy and paste things that you’ve done or said here and there, but they cannot put stuff in your mouth. So whatever you said, or done, maybe not in that context, but you said it, you done it. So it doesn’t really matter. If you look like an ass, you probably are. I’m very happy with it. The way that Carla looks on the show, is the way that she is. If you hang out with her, you laugh. She’s great. She’s jumping all over. And the way that I look is the way that I am. I wasn’t trying to be funny. They said I have some great lines, but I wasn’t trying to be funny. That was just coming out of my head. You can’t really fix that.

Jeff, you were portrayed as the season five heartthrob. Any problems with that?

JM: It’s fine. It could be worse, right?

CH: [He's] the Baywatch guy!

JM: I didn’t mind that. I can be a pretty boy, that’s fine. Sex sells, right?

FV: Well, porn is the biggest industry.

JM: Well, not that kind of sex. You were my roommate, bro.

FV: That’s why I moved out, because you were always naked! I’m just kidding. He’s a great guy.

What’s been the fan reaction to you guys?

JM: Crazy.

CH: Really crazy.

Carla, you must be so tired of people yelling “Hootie-Hoo!” at you.

CH: No, it’s hard to find my husband, but other than that…People have gotten to know me over the 15-week period that I was on the show, and now it’s my opportunity for me to get to know them. And that’s how I look at it. I have to think of a way to keep it fresh. If someone comes up, I haven’t met that person before, so I can’t penalize them because 100 people came up to me before that one person.  But it’s fun.

FV: Tons of email. Tons of letters. It feels good. The only problem is, I don’t want to play a rock star, so I’m trying to answer to everybody and it’s impossible. It’s physically impossible. And I live in a little town. Moorpark [California]. 35,000 people. Everybody’s at the restaurant. Everybody. [There’s] a line on a Tuesday night to get in. It’s crazy.

JM: I definitely have a fan base. There’s a lot of weird stuff that goes on with that.

What kind of weird stuff?

JM: Um…I don’t know why, but I guess I’m pretty popular in prisons. I guess they all have televisions now. I am every prison boy’s dream. I don’t know what it is. There’re good fans, and there’s scary fans. And I’ve definitely met them all. Let’s put it that way. But I love all the fans. They’re really nice. But it is difficult to keep up with everything.

CH: I get a lot of kids.

JM: I get a lot of cougars.

CH: I get people my age, older people, a lot of religious people. People from any religious group. It’s the whole thing of, people will tell me, we’re so glad with how you competed. It’s interesting who gravitates toward us. And I can’t tell you how many teenyboppers I’ve seen wearing that shirt with Fabio’s face. “Carla, Carla! Can I have your autograph? You’re my favorite!” Then why are you wearing Fabio’s shirt?

FV: Bravo, they sold lots of [the shirts]. Like, lots of them. They said several hundred thousand [were sold]. Like, seriously?

Anything you guys regret from the show?

CH: Let me just say, I don’t regret working with Casey [for the final challenge]. I really enjoyed working with her. I think I just didn’t perform well. Restaurant Wars, that was really hard. And thankfully I was on Jeff’s team. Restaurant Wars, I would have worked on my dish first, and then helped later.

F: I loved the Restaurant Wars. “The food is Asian? Okay, front of the house [for me].” [But] I would love to have a sit-down discussion with Martha Stewart.

C: I knew it was that! The mushroom polenta.

F: She didn’t taste it. She got on the show, she had to promote her book. Who buys Martha Stewart books? Housewives! Women! I don’t have a Martha Stewart book! What happens then, she didn’t really try my food. I don’t care who won the challenge. Just make sure that you taste the food before you judge. But truly, she dipped the fork in the polenta. There was nothing on it, she tasted it, and she walked
away. And I was like, she didn’t even taste it. [But] she’s Martha Stewart. I’ve been working with people who have worked with her, and they said she’s very harsh sometimes. I want to make everybody happy. I would probably have Jeff’s friends in jail too, because I try to make everybody happy. And I like people that are approachable, and she didn’t look that way. And you think about it, Martha Stewart, she feeds everybody, you know? Martha Stewart, the biggest brand in the U.S. So what I was expecting was a more loving, fun person in front of you. But I’m sure she’s nice. But she didn’t touch my mushroom polenta, so I was really upset.

Jeff, were you upset that the show brought you back for a second chance in New Orleans, only to kick you off again in the same episode?

JM: Not at all. I was honored to come back. I’ll be honest, I was kicking and screaming when they kicked me off the first time. I thought they should kick [Fabio] off. So I was ticked about that. But I can’t say enough about New Orleans. I love New Orleans. And honestly, whenever I got sent there, there’s something about the energy of the city. I’ve been there twice since the show and it’s been extremely amazing. They edited it. They asked me, “If you come back and you win and you win the car and you win the money, what are you going to do with it?” And I said, “In my opinion, I don’t deserve to be here. This is my second chance. I’m going to give everything to the city of New Orleans and I’m going to find somebody who wasn’t able to open a restaurant that was destroyed by Katrina and wasn’t able to get back on their feet, I’m going to give them the car and the money and hopefully that will be enough to help them get their restaurant back open again.” And even though I wasn’t playing, something in the air with me saying that—I’m not extremely spiritual, but ever since that day, that city has paid me back tenfold.

'I'm a Celebrity...' loses a million viewers from premiere

Categories: TV Biz, TV Ratings

Even with the will-they-leave-or-won’t-they antics of Heidi and Spencer Pratt on Tuesday, NBC’s I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! lost nearly a million viewers from its Monday premiere. Still, it was a decent night for NBC, which rebounded with Brian Williams’ look inside the Obama White House and the season finale of Law & Order: SVU, which was the evening’s most-watched program. (CBS was the most-watched network with repeats of NCIS and The Mentalist.) Elsewhere on the dial, ABC’s According to Jim (finally!) said farewell to its 4.1 million fans, which is more than the number of people ready to face how life will look on Earth in 2100.

Ratings: CBS dominates the week with repeats, George Strait concert

Categories: TV Biz, TV Ratings

One sure sign that the summer has officially arrived: CBS repeats dominated the ratings last week. In fact, of the Top 20 shows, a full 12 were CBS repeats, ranging from No. 1 NCIS (which pulled in 12.5 million viewers) down to No. 17 Rules of Engagement (which drew 7.3 million). But CBS wasn’t only serving up old episodes. The network’s concert special George Strait ACM Artist of the Decade All Star Concert landed at No. 3 with a very healthy 10.6 million watchers. And a new installment of CBS’ Million Dollar Password showed up at No. 20 with 6.7 million viewers.

The CW, as usual, didn’t land any of its shows in the Top 20, but ABC, Fox, and, yes, even NBC, did have some presence. Fox’s summer hit So You Think You Can Dance expanded to its regular two installments last week, and showed up at No. 9 for the Thursday edition (9.2 million viewers) and No. 13 for the Wednesday edition (8.7 million). ABC scored with the second season premiere of Wipeout at No. 12, drawing 8.7 million viewers. And NBC surprisingly notched two Top 20 entries: The season’s second-to-last episode of Medium appeared at No. 14 with 7.9 million viewers, while a new installment of Dateline made its way in at No. 18 with 7.2 million viewers.

The complete Top 20 — with full viewership numbers — is after the jump.

Heidi and Spencer Pratt: Are they getting out of 'I'm a Celebrity...'?

Are the reports saying that Heidi and Spencer Pratt are leaving NBC’s I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here true? It’s anyone’s guess. After a full day of back and forth — which included EW receiving an e-mail from the couple’s publicist announcing the scheduled arrival of their return flight from Costa Rica early tomorrow morning — we’re now told by a key source that the Pratts are considering whether to return to the reality show, and that the decision changes “minute to minute.” Presumably, we’ll have to tune in tonight for the answer. The latest results of an EW.com poll reveal that 60 percent of readers are hoping they’re off the show.

'Jon & Kate Plus Eight' ratings remain strong

Categories: Reality TV, TV Ratings

While it drew fewer viewers than the show’s behemoth premiere, Jon & Kate Plus Eight‘s second installment of the season still helped TLC rank No. 1 on Monday among homes and all key female demographics. The original, back-to-back episodes from 9-10 p.m. attracted 5.5 million and 5.9 million watchers, respectively — good enough to beat competing programs on broadcast and cable among women and persons 18-34. Even the men tuned in to get the latest on the super-sized family from Pennsylvania: The episodes ranked second in key male demos on ad-supported cable, behind WWE Entertainment.

The Gosselins are contracted to appear in a total of 40 episodes this season.
