I have another complaint, I think having 2 killers is a bit of a cheat. I mean, I’m glad it didn’t turn out to be *only* someone from outside the wedding group. But really good writing would could have given us 1 killer, and have had to account for his whereabouts, time to be alone with the victims, etc. If they could have done that with one main character, I would have been totally impressed, and first in line to get the DVD to rewatch the season and see just how they did it (once I knew the killer’s identity). Having 2 killers just totally dilutes that.

The concept of having a short run mini-series was good, the execution was awful. Having a second season with the same concept with different characters would have been beyond stupid.
There were too many characters given that it was a 13 episode mini-series. All of the characters seemed to be too self-absorbed and were completely unaware of people missing until at least half way through the series. There is no way that any series can sustain an audience with that writing formula.
I had to force myself to watch every episode in hopes it would get better. It didn’t get better for me until around episode eight or nine.
Then they have to go and ruin it by having Wakefield be alive.
I think this show would have had a better chance of success if it was more of a whodunit, and not a slasher series. In either case, slow developing shows don’t work very well unless their is something to hook the viewer into watching. Watching people killed off in a variety of ways wasn’t enough.

It is hard to care about characters who are so one dimensional. There is no way to get any background on these characters in such a limited run series. That is especially true given the huge number of characters involved in this series.

While Harper’s Island wasn’t the best example of a limited-run series, I hope the networks don’t give the idea up. Many times viewers are forced to either give up on their shows or watch their shows tank because networks can’t limit the runs of ‘successful’ shows until the ratings tank–which doesn’t happen until the writing goes south, which doesn’t happen unless creators are strongarmed into year after year of unending love triangles and unresolvable plotlines. Networks need to embrace the idea of a show that ENDS. Give the viewers a limited run so they can enjoy great writing from beginning to end. I hope the Harper’s Island concept gets revamped into something with a little more depth and genius for the benefit of all TV fans.

I get the criticisms here, but I loved this show and found it thoroughly entertaining. It’s a shame that the failure of this series though makes it unlikely we’ll get anything like it again. It’s perfect summer fare for those of us not interested in watching dating shows or “reality” crap.

My daughter and I loved this show!! Lots of twists and turns and the finale was a shocker. We were glued to the TV every Saturday night to watch. So sad it’s over now…

Here’s a thought for a 2nd season. Have two stories, one would run for 6 or 7 episodes and than the other for 6 or 7 after the first series has its finale. That way it won’t get tiresome, the writing will be tighter and no boring lulls in the story like they had this year.

I loved the show, I know there were some really bad spots with awful writing, but there isn’t anything else like it on. I would love another season with different characters next year. I have several friends that were watching and we had such a good time trying to figure out who the killer was.

Erika – the problem is that broadcast networks have a certain business model which is not really supported by “limited run” series. That’s why you’ll see more innovative programming (such as “split” seasons) on a cable network.
The way it can be done in the UK is that whole licensing regime is different. Individual viewers pay their share of copyright license there. I don’t think that idea’s going to fly with US viewers any time soon. There is a notion that when you’ve paid for cable or satellite – as a viewer – you’ve paid. But creative suppliers have got to be paid some way – or they will stop producing entertainment for you. The model now is that advertisers pay a whole lot of that. The fact is they get limited bang for their buck on limited series. And the costs to produce TV are so high that b’cast can’t recoup save through syndication. Syndie for 8 eps? Doesn’t compute.

This show was great and very original. I’m willing to forgive a few plot holes or bad writing for the sheer entertainment it provided. My wife and I loved it. Nobody ever thought the show would be up for any kind of awards so lighten up. It did have a great case regardless of the material. And who watches one episode of a show and declares it awful? The same people that think American Idol and Dancing with the Stars is good tv I guess.

That’s too bad. I loved the “whodunnit” style horror shows. We never see them any more. That’s why I loved the Scream trilogy.
Harper’s Island was a great summer treat that. Hopefully we get something like it in the future.

Enjoyed the show as pure summer entertainment. The only way I would watch a second season is you had the cast of Twilight and the cast from The Hill’s on the island. I would hope to see all of the Hill’s crowd DEAD by season end.

  • Sarah

My husband and I both enjoyed the show. Sure there were things we questioned, but it was ultimately an hour a week of entertainment – and entertain it did. I’m disappointed that CBS can’t learn from what it did right and wrong from this season and try it anew again. However, this IS the station that cancelled Moonlight…

Harper’s Island was the equivilant of a beach read – fun, mindless and good to the end as long as you looked only at the surface. We will miss it on Saturday nights. Equal to the Scream series but not at the movie prices. In today’s world mindless is good once and a while.

  • Nikki

It was pretty clear early on that it wasn’t going to return. That’s why I didn’t watch it. Iv’e been burned every year by shows that no one took a chance on bringing back.
