As I first scooped in this week’s Ask Ausiello, T.R. Knight’s army-clad parting shot on Grey’s Anatomy almost didn’t feature T.R. Knight. The haunting scene in the final moments of the show’s season finale — the one where George appears poised to escort Izzie to heaven via elevator — was originally filmed with Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s deceased Denny waiting for Katherine Heigl’s cancer-stricken MD. But an 11th hour epiphany by series creator Shonda Rhimes resulted in Denny getting the shaft.
“Something didn’t feel right,” Rhimes recalls. “And then it hit me, ‘My God, it’s George! When the elevator opens, it should be George we see.’”
There was just one problem. Actually, there were two problems. Keep reading to see what they were and how they got resolved…
Thinking he was done for the season, Knight went ahead and shaved his head. As Rhimes explains, “[Director] Rob Corn calls me up and goes, ‘What do we do?’” Considering George enlisted in the Army right before getting mowed down by that bus, the solution came to Rhimes in an instant. “I said, ‘Put him in a military uniform!’ It wasn’t a big amazing plan I had.”
The happy accident packed an emotional punch for viewers, Knight included. “It was brilliant of Shonda to put George in the dress blues,” says the actor, who last month confirmed that he would not be returning to Grey’s next fall. “It was such a powerful image.”
The whole thing is even more remarkable when you consider that Heigl was in Atlanta shooting a film and not present for the reshoot. To ensure their expressions were in sync, Knight picked Heigl’s brain over the phone before stepping in front of the cameras. “I was like, ‘What did you do in that scene?’” he says with a laugh. “It’s nice when you’ve worked with someone for five years. There’s a shorthand.”
Heigl still had some concerns about whether the switcheroo could be pulled off. “Katey called me and was like, ‘Are my expressions going to match his? Is it going to work?” Rhimes recounts. “And I was like, ‘I promise you it’s going to be perfect.’”

It’s good to hear TR talking about the finale
http://tvdonewright.com/
She was filming “Killers” in Atlanta, Georgia not Alabama by the way.
Umm, he joined the ARMY it’s not dress blues.
More of Shonda talking out of both sides of her mouth. She can’t keep her stories straight, whether in the media or on screen. The show peaked with Season 2 and has stunk ever since. I will miss TR on the show. I hope Izzie stays on the elevator.
Wow, Miss Rhimes chose to put George there instead of Denny? She must have hated TR more that she is obsessed with Dean. Dean is such a terrible actor. He has a damn good rep team.
Also, it is true. George joined the army and should not be in blue.
uh-uh
i love george’s hair cut short (:
There is an Army dress uniform that is blue. It is for formal occasions.
Actually, the Army does have dress blues, but from the tiny picture, it looks like he’s in his Class A’s (greens). Didn’t watch it, so I’m not sure what he was wearing. Also, they are phasing out the greens, so maybe he has the new Class A uniform, which is blue, I believe.
Actually, those aren’t Army dress blues (which do exist, by the way) those are the Class A uniform.
I really liked the finale. These people that are picking apart the show really don’t care how they ruin for everyone else. It’s the moment more than anything. Get over it and watch something else if you want to pick it apart.
Thank you for finally posting the WHOLE story. It’s been killing me!
OMG..YOu really think this is a scoop? I mean, REALLY? You do realize when you first posted this “non scoop” and you said you’d do the “big reveal” in the new EW, more than a dozen posters already put the story up in the comment page because Grey’s fans already knew the story and it was online before you scooped it. Can you A) stop doing so many non stories on Grey’s B) try to find better GA sources because yours aren’t good. Online fans are better at scoops than you are and C)If the scoop is really this lame, avoid plugging the EW magazine for the reveal because that magazine still has credibility. Truly a sorry piece of so called GA scoop. You’ve lost your touch Ausiello. Now onto EVEN more Izzie stories right? (ugh).
Its still somewhat sad when you write storylines based on off screen problems and disputes with your actors.

George looked so beautiful in his army uniform.
I love hearing TR speak.
Katie Heigl was filming in Atlanta (as in Georgia), not Alabama.
