Although I commend RTD for recommending Supernatural, I think he really, really doesn’t understand, or just doesn’t give a damn about, the Torchwood fanbase. My friends and I adore the show, but our common complaint is that Gwen Cooper is a complete and total Mary Sue and gets off relatively easy.
That being said, I liked most of Children of the Earth until the unnecessary death of Ianto. For me, Ianto was one of the more interesting and complex characters of the show, given that the other two interesting and complex characters were killed off at the end of season 2. RTD does have interesting ideas and can create memorable characters, but his unfortunate tendency of killing off good characters and pampering others leaves much to be desired.
As much as I loved the show in previous seasons, COE has possibly driven me and my friends away from the series for good. Fantastic job, RTD. Truly a work of art.

Reading RTD’s answers made me so angry. I’ve been a fan, a faithful viewer. Bought the DVDs, the books, the audio plays, attended the conventions and even travelled to Cardiff. And now I’m being discarded. Just like that. I’m being told off for wanting my favourite character and TV show back because I can’t stand “drama” and am told to go read poetry? Nice. RTD and the BBC most certainly won’t get another Euro from this fan.

Sorry, RTD. Did Ianto’s death piss me off? Of course it did. But it was Day Five that sealed my extremely negative opinion of “Children of Earth” as a whole, not missing one character. It was the opposite of entertaining – it was an hour of horrible, terrible things. Things I didn’t enjoy watching, didn’t enjoy thinking about. There’s being an “adult show” and pushing the envelope and being willing to put one’s characters into difficult/truly risky situations and then there’s “Children of Earth.”
To me the biggest shame is that artistically speaking I think this was the strongest Torchwood’s ever been. None of the heinous quick-zooms and shaky-cam of S2, the best music the series has seen, and gorgeous lighting and camera angles. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to watch CoE again – certainly not Day Five, but probably not any of it.
I can only hope that similar treatment hasn’t been given to David Tennant’s last three episodes of Doctor Who.
    (I’ll not hold my breath.)

‘Torchwood’ boss to angry fans: Go watch ‘Supernatural’
    —-
    I will, thanks

  • Gail

    Miriam – well said!
Russell T Davies handled the questions professionally and honestly, imo. I admire the man for not bowing and scraping to the rabid minority of “fans” who feel he owes them some kind of personal apology.
I was devastated by the storylines in ‘Children of Earth’ but I’m grateful to the writers, cast and crew for giving me five hours of heart-stoppingly brilliant TV.
I’m still a huge fan of the show, the characters, and RTD and I’m not going anywhere.

I already watch Supernatural thank you very much. I will gladly never watch anything you ever make again. You are a poor excuse for a writer and a nasty human being at that RTD. You have no respect for your fans or your charactrs. I wish you nothing but bad luck.

  • Michele

No respect for the fans at all. Even if there will be another series (which considering there are NO CHARACTERS LEFT, there shouldn’t be), you can BET on a lower demographic for the callous dismissal of a beloved character which served no purpose other than a whim of an arrogant writer. From your lips, you want us to go watch other things? Fine. I hope you have other hobbies, because without the fans, you are nothing.

  • Carrie

I spent hours convincing my friends to watch seasons one and two of Torchwood because I loved it so much. We all sat and watched Children Of Earth together…
I guess we will all have to watch Supernatural now! or Fringe! or Warehouse 13! or Dollhouse or anything that puts my money as far away from RTD as possible.
oh and all that time I spent convincing my friends to watch Torchwood… well now I can spend that time better… supporting the careers of Gareth David-Lloyd, Nakio Mori and Burn Gorman (Ianto, Tosh and Owen) who deserved better care in your hands.

  • Callie K.

Sorry, RTD. I’m not posting because I had a big emotional reaction. Ianto was killed to advanced Jack’s angst and plotline. (Google “women in refrigerators.”)
It was weak. It was poor writing. It’s the same “lonely soldier” story you’ve done five or six times to the Doctor. I’m voicing my opinion around because if I keep having to watch dreck like this, I’m going to stop watching television altogether. I barely watch it anyway, and you lost any money I might have given Doctor Who and Torchwood in the future or any interest I might have in your future projects.
I’ve also been dealing with queer issues my whole life, and I’m tired of the Brokeback Mountain tragidi!!! ending that’s in so much queer cinema. It’s boring and done, I don’t want it, and I’m sick of dead, tragic queers. You wrote into a trope, and it’s a trope that was tired back in 1992.

I honestly don’t think that Davies understands what’s going on here at all. We are not just a few fans typing away at a computer. We are very pissed off, very heatbroken fans who are feeling even more betrayed then when we first watched day 4. Ianto Jones was ultimately not explored enough, and his relationship with Jack was cut off right when they were going even deeper* then they were before. Ianto’s death was both unnecessary and completely reversible. As for claiming that “some people” will not watch the 4th season, he is severely underestimating the fans devotion to Ianto Jones. I can pretty much guarantee that Torchwood is destroyed with Ianto’s death. The fanbase is severely depleted with Ianto gone, and I highly doubt that a 4th season will be successful now. Good luck with that, Davies, really, because I am completely done watching Torchwood now. I didn’t even watch Day 5.
All the best, Russel, really. But don’t expect the same loyalty or fans as before. Not even a fraction.

How can their be another Torchwood season when RTD keeps killing off the characters?

  • Rhi

Wow. Condescending much? Hate to tell you RTD, but most fans aren’t upset because GDL is a pretty boy and we’re losing that – so no need to send us to SPN. We’re upset because Ianto was an awesome character who had a lot of potential and whose death seemed pointless. I get that characters die on TW – you’ve made that very clear. But you could have given his death meaning. Instead, it felt cheap and served no purpose. Plus, a lot of us are really tired of Gwen never suffering. Nothing permanent ever happens to her – she gets her happily ever after. No other character does. And yes, life sucks and life is hard, but one character shouldn’t get all the happy endings.

  • m

Some fans loved COE, some fans didn’t. Which ones should RTD call to get the plotlines from? Ianto’s death was horrible and RTD should have been more respectful of the fans in his comments, but do you seriously think the scripts should be dictated by what makes the fans happy? The fact that the series was devastating points out its effectiveness.

  • Lisa

“It would devalue the entire plot if we brought him back.”
Explain, RTD, why you brought Rose back in Doctor Who if this is what you claim to believe. She had a very dramatic and heart-wrenching departure, so why did he need to bring her back?
Everything this man says just makes him seem more contemptible. He has no respect for fans.

  • Jenny

    Wow. Just… gobsmacked.
It’s always nice to be insulted first thing in the morning.
For the record, yes I agree COE was brilliantly written, thought provoking and beautifully acted.
It was also bleak, depressing, introduced characters for the whole purpose of killing them and to be quite frank felt more like Spooks than Torchwood.I kept expecting Harry to pop up somewhere. It was so far removed from the Whoniverse in general that it really felt like an idea from RTD’s “maybe” that he had been wanting to write for ages so just used it regardless of how it would affect the show.
As for taking Jack in a new direction – yes,you are turning him into the Doctor.Sacrificed a grandchild to save a world or two?Check.Lost your partner (several times?) Check.
I suppose we should at least be grateful Ianto got an “original” death with a virus as opposed to shot like the Master or Jenny.
Thanks for the memories RTD.Hope you enjoy the US.I hear they also have great coffee.
