'CSI' scoop: Sara's back! Is Grissom next?

Csi-Jorja-Fox_l Now that the initial burst of excitement surrounding Jorja Fox’s CSI comeback has died down, it’s time to get down to business — the business of getting answers to some burning questions! What prompted her return? How long will she be sticking around? What impact will Sara’s reappearance have on the rest of the team? And, last but not least, is Grissom next? CSI showrunners Carol Mendelsohn and Naren Shankar tackle all those Qs and then some after the jump.

Jorja’s back for five episodes, right?
CAROL MENDELSOHN: Yes, five non-consecutive episodes.

The show took a little bit of a ratings hit towards the end of last season. Did CBS ask you to bring her back as a way to halt the slide?
MENDELSOHN: No. It actually emanated from Naren and I. It’s a tough time for everybody in TV. We don’t feel [it's fair] to single out CSI.

NAREN SHANKAR: We had several major characters departing over the last year and a half, and it felt like the family had disintegrated a little bit. We had people off in their own bubbles, and that suggested a theme for this season, which is really about family. We wanted to restore that balance of the family. And that initial creative impulse led to the notion of Jorja coming back and helping to assist with that.

How is she reintegrated?
SHANKAR: We’ll learn a little bit about what she’s been doing for the past couple of months. We’re going to start season 10 in real time — two-and-a-half months since the end of last season. She comes in because the team is a little understaffed and overworked. One of our characters reaches out to her and brings her back in, unbeknownst to the other guys.

MENDELSOHN: It’s an interesting dynamic because each and every individual in the team is feeling that lack of cohesion. Catherine feels it. Nick feels it. Greg feels it. And Sara comes in and brings everyone together. And she helps Catherine understand that as the [new] leader, she needs to make the team cohesive and really fire on all cylinders again.

Should we assume that her happily ever after with Grissom didn’t fare so well? They did end up together, right?
SHANKAR: They absolutely ended up together. Grissom is referenced in [Fox's first] episode. You’ll get a sense of the good and the bad of the two of them actually being together for real. Because we’re talking about a couple of very independent individuals who have decided to share their life together. The first few months of that for any couple would be a weird kind of adjustment. In some ways, it’s easier to be in love with somebody who’s not there.

MENDELSOHN: And you have to admit that Sara and Grissom had a unique courtship. It [makes sense] that their further relationship would also be unique.

So they didn’t break up then?
SHANKAR: No.

When’s William Petersen returning?
MENDELSOHN: You never know when and if Grissom will show up on CSI. The theme of the season is family. And he certainly is part of the family — a big part of the family.

Are there any concrete plans?
MENDELSOHN: We’re certainly open to it, but no, there are no concrete plans.

“The theme of the season is family.”
What a nice way of putting it. I did see that last season everyone felt disjointed. I hope this doesn’t disappoint.

      well said niko

I actually have watched every single season of CSI and it was my fave show. After Sara and the Grissom left I tried to watch it with the newer cast members but it wasn’t the same and i stopped watching all together. SARA coming in is definitely going to make me want to watch the show i once couldn’t live without! I’m very very excited!

I agree totally, I really like Rays character buit something is missing now that Grissom has gone. liking the fact that Sara is back tho :)

  • Whatever

Sara’s coming back, again? I’m already disappointed with season 10.

    • Fallen

      Oh, boo! You guys suck.

PS: If you hadn’t noticed–I kind of like Sara. I’m glad she’s back.

    • JoJo6

DISAPPOINTED, r u crazy? The last season was lost without her and Grissom, why on earth would u be disappointed? Do you not love the original show and the previous 9 seasons!?

  • Kayla

Too much focus on Sara! I’m more interested in the other characters, I hope they will get some decent storylines.

    • JoJo6

yuck, the 2 newest characters are kind of , hmm how do I say this nicely, kind of LAME (especially the chick she is like a freaking mannequin! L. Fishburn just tries too hard to fit into Grissom’s shoes, and NO ONE can ever fill those!!

  • babydoll

This is fantastic – I guess a little part of me just hoped that she would stay for more than 5 episode – I like how they finally realised Riley wasn’t working – and that Ray isn’t the centre of the universe!!

    • George

I agree with you. Finally they are doing something about it.

    • Chelsea

I agree! I wish she were around for more than 5 episodes. And Ray isn’t the center anymore :) I would much rather have Sara be the center of an episode than Ray.

      • JoJo6

u never knoe, maybe she’ll stay!

    • JoJo6

      WELL SAID!!!

  • dee

I am disappointed already. I didn’t like Sara (or GSR) and was glad she had left but she keeps coming back. I was just starting to enjoy the show again and I really liked Riley but I agree there is way too much Ray and hope that changes. What we really need is more Cath, Nick, and GREG!!!

    • debbwell

I hear you. It was becoming the Laurence Fishburne show. & I love LF.
My problem also is that Sara sounds like a Mary Sue to the Rescue! Only Sara can bring the group together. Come On!

  • kirads09

I am not a fan at all of Jorja/Sara miss-why-are-you-so-angry-all-the-time-whiney-pants. So not excited about her “return”. I do,however, require a major Grissom fix and hope he returns for a few episodes.

    • SmokeFreeZone

If Petersen is not too busy with theater appearances… he might show up at least once during season 10!!

  • MT

I never bought the romance between Grissom and Sara. Also, for being such a stickler for protocol and rules I couldn’t believe he’d have a relationship with a subordinate. The writers tried to make their “romance” seem like it was destined – actually it seemed icky and forced. When Sara left I was glad not to have to see her flat pancake face anymore. But when Grissom left, so did I.

    • JoJo6

I thought that romance was so exciting and them too fit soooo well 2gether. We all have our opinions i guess

  • marilyn

Last season was a bust…sorry!Miss Sara and Grissom and Warrick very much. Can’t Warrick be in witness protection?

    • Teresa

I agree. I feel like the show started to go down a bit as soon as Warrick was gone. The commarderie he had with ALL the characters, I think added to that feeling of family with Grissom as the “dad”. I think having Sara back for a few episodes is okay but she was never my favorite character. It looks like I am in the minority of liking the Ray character. I think he just needs a little more time to develop. Riley can go.

      • JoJo6

Riley AND Ray can both go! Lets bring back the REAL crew of CSI back!

    • JoJo6

NIce, witness protection-that would be the shizzo! Good idea ;)Marilyn

  • nanigsr

I’m very HAPPY for the return of Sara.its FANTASTIC!!!!!! “The theme of the S10 is family”?? She is a big part of that family!!!!,ok??? Sara intersted more that many characters of CSI. GRISSOM & SARA ARE PERFECT TOGETHER!!!! Not cath/griss not sara/greg not LH/griss…ok?? Sara & Grissom only ship!!!! I HOPE THAT GRISSOM WILL BE NEXT. Ausiello!!! THEY ARE MARRIED??? You is not sad!!!! GO GSR!!!!

  • Marsha

I have always loved the Grissom/Sara
combo. Am looking very forward to Season 10. TY

  • jenna

Ahh, the Sara/GSR haters are back in full force. What do you do with all your negative energy when she’s not around?
No matter. Sara’s back. GSR is together. That’s all I need to know. Can’t wait for season 10. And without Sara, I could have cared less.
    Welcome back, JORJA!

  • Gerrianne Cheek

I’m with Dee. I never like the Sara character and last season wasn’t the same without Grissom. I’m not watching it this season unless there is nothing else on. I don’t care if you have to pay him a fortune… He was your “CSI” show.

  • MikerMan

I disliked Sara’s character and was happy to see her leave, however, Riley is even worse. We still don’t even know a thing about her. So, I guess I’m ok with this move.

  • AnnaSophia

Jorja! Jorja!!… I’m so excited that Sara is coming back to CSI to bring the family together.. The team had come apart after Warrick’s death and Grissom’s departure. I cannot wait for the premiere… Welcome back Jorja
PS. Riley is not coming back to CSI. She really did not integrate with the team well. I did not like her character that much.

    • JoJo6

I really hope Riley (aka mannequin chick) doesn’t evr come back!

  • david lomar

I hate Dr. Langston fire him!!!!Bring someone better. Please!!!!!
