Armchair Casting Director: 'Scrubs'

Categories: Scrubs

Scrubs has officially started casting the three new med students exec producer Bill Lawrence first told me about last month. Details are as follows…

LUCY: A 22-year-old, all-American girl from a working class family. Her entire family has sacrificed all their hopes and dreams on her success. She has a nervous habit of lying about mundane things in an effort to connect with people. Series regular.

DREW: A 30-year-old scruffy yet attractive student. Think a younger Bill Murray. This is his last shot of making a go of this med school thing – and he knows it. On the surface he’s cool and a bit of a wise-ass. Deep down, he’s neurotic and terrified of failing again. Series regular.

COLE: A 22-year-old charming, conservative, insanely entitled med student. Seems like a sweetheart at first but he’s really an ass. His wealthy family donated a wing to the med school and he has a residency slot waiting for him at Sacred Heart when he graduates. Competitive, manipulative, reckless and an enormous irritant to Dr. Cox. Series regular.

Armchair Casting Director: 'The Smurfs Movie'

Categories:

The A.C.D. is taking a rare detour to movieland to bring you exclusive scoop on (natch) The Smurfs Movie – specifically, details about the two lead roles currently being cast. Beware, the following info contains plot spoilers…

SOPHIE: A pre-teen girl who possesses enormous smarts and great imagination, but who is socially and physically clumsy. She discovers that the doll her dad brought home from Belgium is actually a living, breathing Smurf. And not just any Smurf — Clumsy Smurf! Sophie tries to get her mom and dad to embrace Clumsy as a member of the family, but ultimately realizes what he really wants is to reunite with his fellow Smurfs.

Armchair Casting Director suggests Michael Ausiello for this role.

SAM: Sophie’s 15-year-old brother. He’s a good kid, but has a tendency to be difficult and withdrawn. He gets involved in helping Clumsy return home and, as a result, bonds with his sister.

Armchair Casting Director also suggests Michael Ausiello for this role.

'Grey's Anatomy' exclusive: The George story you'll never see

Categories: Grey's Anatomy

Tr-knight-greys_l It’s now common knowledge
that T.R. Knight declined Grey’s Anatomy boss Shonda Rhimes’ request to briefly
return in season 6 to give his terminal George some closure. “I kind of get it,”
the series’ creator says in this week’s Entertainment Weekly cover story. “[He’d]
emotionally walked away.” Fans, however, may not be quite as chill when
they hear the killer story she had planned for him. Exclusive details about
George O’Malley’s lost Grey’s Anatomy episode can be found after the jump…

In this fall’s season premiere, George will succumb to the injuries he sustained after getting mowed down by that bus in last May’s finale. But that wasn’t supposed to be the last we saw of him. Says Rhimes, the episode was then going to flash back to the hours during which George was missing, from when he left the hospital to when he returned later on as a disfigured John Doe.

“I wanted to see his last day [alive] really badly,” she says. “What I thought was interesting was the idea of, we now know it’s the last day of someone’s life, [so we’re] looking at it differently than [we] would any other time.”

Viewers would have also seen firsthand how George’s split-second decision to save that girl’s life cost him his own. “I wanted to see the moment he leapt in front of the bus,” Rhimes confirms. “I wanted to bookend the episode [so that] the first time you see him leap in front of the bus, it’s really scary. But the second time you see it, he’s a hero.

“I thought it would have been a beautiful episode,” she continues, adding that, had we seen those missing hours, “We might have learned something new about George.”

Although disappointed she wasn’t able to tell that story, Rhimes insists she’s content with how George’s five-year arc concluded. “We really got to see him grow up,” she says. “It really does feel like we watched a full evolution of a character, and I feel good about that.”

Still, I would’ve loved to have seen those flashbacks. What about you? Do you wish Knight had stuck around a little longer to give us George’s last day? Or do you agree with him that the final shot of his character standing outside the elevator was “the best way to leave
it”? Comment away below!

Everyone’s got an opinion about Lost‘s Jack/Kate/Sawyer triangle, and that includes Jorge Garcia, Michael Emerson, and Nestor Carbonell. Shortly after participating in the show’s last Comic-Con panel ever, the trio trekked over to EW.com’s video suite to weigh in one of the Lost community’s most hotly-debated subjects.

Ian Somerhalder (Boone) returning to 'Lost'

Categories: Lost, Television, TV Biz

Welcome back, Boone! Ian Somerhalder has been cast as a bad vampire in the CW’s upcoming drama The Vampire Diaries, but apparently, he’s not ready to say goodbye to his role as Boone on Lost just yet. He told the crowd at Comic-Con today that the Vampire producers are ready for him to be called back to Hawaii this season. When asked what it’s like to be at Comic-Con and if he’s still peppered with questions from Lost fans, Somerhalder stammered a bit but replied with some good news: “I think it’s safe to say…  we sort of discussed that… it’s truly incredible that… I am going to be coming back.” As expected, the audience roared. He reassured the crowd, however, that job one is to play Damon, the evil vampire brother of Stefan (played by Paul Wesley).

Afterward, Somehalder told EW exclusively that Lost producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse only told him half an hour before the Vampire Diaries panel that he will be coming back next season. “It’s not clear yet” when it’ll happen but “it’ll be very soon.” Somerhalder said he wasn’t necessarily surprised at the development, because he had been talking to the producers for some time about returning. “It’s just a matter of timing and getting me down there,” says Somerhalder. “It’s all good.”

'Smallville' season 9 spoilers: 'It's Clark's darkest hour'

Categories: Comic-Con, Smallville

Smallville-Durance-Tom_l You never know who you're going to randomly bump into here at Comic-Con. Take last night. I'm innocently munching on a spicy tuna roll at Warner Bros' Asian-themed cocktail reception and who should wander over to say hello but Smallville exec producer Brian Peterson. Good times, right? It gets better. The dude, who's in town for the show's historic Con panel on Sunday, talked my ear off about his blockbuster plans for season 9 and beyond. What follows after the jump are some of the highlights…

* Season 9's theme is
"Clark's darkest hour."

* Look for a season-long love
triangle with Clark, Lois, and Red-Blue Blur.

* Chloe, still grieving over
Jimmy's death, will immerse herself in all things Watchtowerish. Peterson also
hinted at some tension for Chlark when she realizes she's no longer content
just being his sidekick.

* We'll find out why Clark
isn't flying in a scene with him and Jor-El (the returning Terence Stamp) in
the season premiere.

* Footage of Brian Austin Green
as Metallo will be unveiled at tomorrow's Con panel. As of now, he's on board
for two episodes, but Peterson says they're hopeful he'll do more.

* The episode they're
currently shooting (either 9.02 or 9.03) focuses on Oliver's downward spiral.

* Battlestar Galactica's
Alessandro Juliani will reprise his role as Dr. Emil Hamilton for several
episodes this season.

* Story-wise, Peterson is not approaching this season as Smallville's last.

* I saved the best for last:
Peterson recently had dinner with Michael Rosenbaum. Interpret as you like.

Comic-Con video: 'Bones' romance spoilers

Categories: Bones, Comic-Con

Bones creator Hart Hanson can sub for David Boreanaz anytime he wants. With his star stuck in L.A. waiting for his very pregnant wife to give birth, Hanson was more than happy to join leading lady Emily Deschanel for a previously-scheduled interview at Comic-Con with yours truly. And believe me, I was happy to have him. After all, who better to weigh in on the backlash from last May’s season finale, the rumored kiss in the season premiere, and the future of Booth and Brennan as a couple than the big boss himself? The slightly spoilery interview is after the jump…

'The Simpsons': Coldplay's Chris Martin, Sarah Silverman among season 21 guests

Categories: The Simpsons

The Simpsons has added more celebrity guest voices to season 21: EW.com has learned that Coldplay frontman Chris Martin will lend his vocal cords to an episode this winter in which Homer wins a million-dollar lottery and hires the band to play a concert just for Bart and him. “When Bart goes to the bathroom, Coldplay has to stop,” notes Simpsons exec producer Al Jean. In another episode, Sarah Silverman plays Bart’s new girlfriend, who “alternately loves him and hates him for no reason,” says Jean. Meanwhile, season 20 guest star Anne Hathaway returns, this time as a princess character that the producers of Krusty the Clown’s show bring onto the series in hopes that more young girls will tune in. (Even though she upstages Krusty, the two wind up as a couple.) Other guest voices this season include Seth Rogen (who penned the season premiere), Jonah Hill, Neve Campbell, Eartha Kitt (who recorded a part shortly before passing away last year), the Smothers Brothers, and the Manning brothers (Peyton, Eli, and Cooper). Season 21 debuts Sept. 27 on Fox.

'Dollhouse' scoop: Amy Acker to return

Categories: Comic-Con, Dollhouse

Comic-Con news alert: Dollhouse boss Joss Whedon just confirmed to me that Amy Acker has inked a deal to return for three episodes in season 2. There was some question whether Acker would be able to juggle Dollhouse with her full-time gig on ABC’s new drama Happy Town. Check back later for my exclusive video interview with Whedon and Eliza Dushku.

'Friday Night Lights' scoop: Tyra's return in doubt

Categories: Friday Night Lights

Comic-Con news alert: Plans for Adrianne Palicki to return
to Friday Night Lights this fall to give Tyra some closure have hit a
snag. “I’m actually going to be shooting [Red Dawn] during the fourth
season, so I don’t know if I’m going back,” she told me during a break
from promoting her upcoming Biblical thriller Legion. “I know they want me to [come
back].” The actress confessed that the thought of leaving FNL for good
makes her “very sad.. I had such a great time on that show. They’re like my
family.” There’s always season 5!

Comic-Con exclusive: 'Smallville' star Tom Welling to make his first-ever appearance!

Categories: Comic-Con, Smallville

Tom-welling-comic-con_l Note
to those Smallville fans planning to attend Sunday’s event at Comic-Con: You
may want to get in line now because a very special guest has just been added to
the panel.

Tom freakin’ Welling!

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Welling will make his first-ever Con appearance at the show’s panel discussion on Sunday. He joins exec producers Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson, as well as fellow cast members Allison
Mack, Erica Durance, Cassidy Freeman, Justin Hartley and Callum Blue.

This will mark the first time in Smallville history that the entire current cast will be assembled for Comic-Con.

And I repeat: Get in line NOW!
