Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet) says she will be back on 'Lost' next season
Elizabeth Mitchell may be at Comic-Con to help promote V, her upcoming drama for ABC this fall, but that doesn’t mean she’s done talking about Lost. Lingering questions still remain about Mitchell’s heart-wrenching demise as Juliet last spring, specifically: Is that really the last time we will hear from her character? Mitchell, speaking to EW exclusively on the Comic-Con floor, says she understands all the interest in Juliet’s future whereabouts. “I don’t have closure,” she said. “I love closure and will be happy for it when it comes.” Which means? Juliet’s storyline “hasn’t really reached its end yet,” Mitchell hinted. “There are other things happening in the next season.”
In fact, Mitchell was apparently assured that there was room for both V and Lost if Team Darlton — aka Lost honchos Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse — wanted her back in Hawaii. “I had to ask if V succeeded, does that mean I would be on Lost less? [She learned] I’ll be on Lost the same amount. Lost is the best…with their schedule. They actually told me what it is. It’s very exciting. All the [V and Lost] producers are really good at talking to each other.”
Even one of her co-stars encouraged Mitchell to pursue the gig on V. Mitchell said Evangeline Lilly (Kate) read the script and gave it a thumbs up. ABC is expected to announce a premiere date for V, a series version of the memorable miniseries of the same name, within the next month.
Comic-Con video: Kristen Bell and Freddie Highmore
In a perfect world, Kristen Bell would be at Comic-Con
promoting a Veronica Mars feature film. Instead, she’s
here on behalf of Astro Boy, the forthcoming computer-animated 3-D flick based
on the Japanese phenomenon in which she voices the role of Cora. (Freddie
Highmore, who’s making the PR rounds with Bell, voices the title role.) But
have no fear. I managed to get in a couple questions about Mars. And Gossip
Girl. And… well, see for yourself after the jump.
'Torchwood' boss to angry fans: Go watch 'Supernatural'
SPOILER ALERT: Stop reading if you have yet to see Part Four of Torchwood: Children of Earth. Everyone else, onward and downward… Backlash shmacklash. That’s Torchwood creator Russell T. Davies’ reaction to the outcry over the shocking death of Gareth David-Lloyd’s much-loved Ianto in the BBC America miniseries Children of Earth. “It’s not a backlash really,” he scoffs. “It’s just a few people posting online.” Those few people may want to fasten their seat belts, ’cause the unapologetic Brit behind the original Queer as Folk also has some strong opinions about why Ianto had to die, what TV show pissed off fans should watch instead (hint: see headline above), and where Torchwood goes from here.
Question: Why’d you kill Ianto?
RUSSELL T. DAVIES: The threat to the world was just so great it simply would have been unlikely if everyone had survived. Torchwood is an adult show. We have killed off leading members of the cast before. Those have always been the stakes. Poor Ianto was defeated by a greater evil, I’m afraid.
Question: So this wasn’t something that resulted from Gareth wanting to leave?
DAVIES: No, it was my decision.
Question: What do you make of the fan backlash?
DAVIES: It’s not particularly a backlash. What’s actually happening is, well, nothing really to be honest. It’s a few people posting online and getting fans upset. Which is marvelous. It just goes to prove how much they love the character and the actor. People often say, ‘Fans have got their knives out!’ They haven’t got any knives. I haven’t been stabbed. Nothing’s happened. It’s simply a few people typing. I’m glad they’re typing because they’re that involved. But if you can’t handle drama you shouldn’t watch it. Find something else. Go look at poetry. Poetry’s wonderful.
Question: Can you confirm that Ianto is, in fact, dead?
DAVIES: I’m afraid so. He’s a wonderful actor. I’ve worked with him before. I’m a big fan of his and I [look forward to] watching his career prosper. But death is death in this case. It would devalue the entire plot if we brought him back.
Question: But it’s a risky thing to kill off such a popular character.
DAVIES: Absolutely. There’s a risk that some people won’t come back to watch now that Ianto’s gone. I thank them for watching the show and I recommend they go watch Supernatural, because those boys are beautiful. And don’t tell me they’re brothers. [Laughs] Not in my mind.
Question: One of my readers wondered if you were under pressure to de-gay Torchwood and that’s why you killed him off.
DAVIES: I think you can forget about people picking up gay rights as an issue. It’s rather like children picking up nursery blocks and waving them in the air but having no idea what it entails. We’re talking about issues in my entire life here, not just one small television program. If they did research they’d go and look at the history of gay and lesbian characters that I have put on screen. They should simply grow up, do some research, and stop riding on a bandwagon that they actually don’t know anything about.
Question: What was Gareth’s reaction when you told him you were killing Ianto?
DAVIES: Oh, he’s a lovely, professional man. He completely understood. He’d seen two major characters disappear the year before. It’s a job. It’s a very straightforward process. He loved filming that great big death scene.
Question: With half the cast dead, where does Torchwood go from here?
DAVIES: We don’t yet know about our fourth series, but I’m fairly confident [it will continue] in some shape or form. I will just sit down and invent new stories and characters. That’s what I’ve spent my entire life doing. It’s not difficult at all. I could write the first 10 scenes in an episode right now.
Question: Will Jack continue to be the centerpiece?
DAVIES: Oh, I would think so. I would hope so. He’s absolutely fundamental to Torchwood.
Question: Do you think you’ll stick to the miniseries format?
DAVIES: It’s hard to say. It’s been pretty successful. We were the number one show for five nights running [in the UK], which was amazing. Everything’s looking good, but it’s hard to say. We’re in a recession so no one gets easy money to make television. I like continuous story. I like doing new things. In many ways, Torchwood was designed as a digital weapon. It’s kind of multi-purpose, multi-adaptable, shape-shifting weapon that can become anything. I’m kind of excited what we’ll do next.
Question: What about a feature film?
DAVIES: Oh, God. Raising money for that would be harder than a television show. But anything is possible.
Question: Any hints about where the story will go next?
DAVIES: No, it’s literally too soon. I don’t know yet.
This week's cover: 'Grey's Anatomy' star T.R. Knight reveals why he left the hit show
In the spirit of Comic-Con, I’m going to geek out here for a moment: Holy frak, it’s my very first Entertainment Weekly cover story!!! Now that I got that out of my system, I present you with this exclusive excerpt…
Fans were shocked when T.R. Knight made the surprising decision to leave Grey’s Anatomy, the hit medical drama that launched him to fame. This week, in an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor reveals what led him to his decision, and he also candidly discusses “Isaiahgate,” coming out of the closet, and leaving his friends at Seattle Grace.
This fall, Knight was surprised to see his character George O’Malley all but vanish from the show — for the first nine episodes of season 5, he appeared on screen a total of only 48 minutes, compared to 114 for Sandra Oh’s Christina. Still, due to what he calls a gradual “breakdown of communication” between himself and exec producer Shonda Rhimes, the actor chose not to ask his boss what was going on with his character. Instead, he simply asked to leave. “My five-year experience proved to me that I could not trust any answer that was given [about George],” he explains. “And with respect, I’m going to leave it at that.”
Though he was unknown when Grey’s premiered, Knight soon emerged as one of the breakout stars (and even earned a supporting actor Emmy nod in 2007), but it was what came to be known as “Isaiahgate” that would catapult him to household-name status. After Isaiah Washington referred to Knight as a “f—-t” during an on-set argument with co-star Patrick Dempsey, the tabloids caught wind of it, Knight came out in the press, and Washington was fired. While Knight doesn’t specifically fault Rhimes for how the situation was handled behind the scenes, he says the exec producer was among those who tried to discourage him from coming out: “I think she was concerned about having my statement come out so close to the [initial] event.” Rhimes denies this: “I said, ‘If you want to come out, that’s awesome. We’ll totally support that.’ And then he went away, thought about it, and came back and said, ‘I’m going to make this statement.’ I remember saying to [fellow executive producer] Betsy Beers, ‘This is our proudest day here. T.R. got to come out, and I got to say to him that it wouldn’t affect his character’ — because he was concerned that he was going to come out and George would suddenly be gay. I was like, ‘We are not going to do that.’ The idea that a gay actor can’t play a straight man is insulting.”
Knight returned to work on season 4, but the actor struggled with the story line in which George cheated on his wife Callie (Sara Ramirez) with Izzie (Katherine Heigl). And once George went MIA from the beginning of season 5, the star came to the conclusion that his character had “expired.”Today, Knight is at peace with his choice to leave: “There just comes a time when it’s so clear that moving on is the best decision,” he says. But at first, his castmate and friend Heigl tried to talk him out of it. “I didn’t think it was the right decision,” she says. “I felt like some of the problems could be worked through. But by the time it came to fruition, I was [glad] for him because he was ready to go.”
Knight knows he’s taking a risk walking away from his top 10 show and $14 million contract. “From an outsider’s perspective, I get the [impression that] ‘He’s just a spoiled actor…he doesn’t know how good he has it,’” he says. “There are a lot of people who would like to be in my position. But in the end, I need to be fulfilled in my work.”
For more on T.R. Knight — including how he felt when George was back-burnered, what he really thought of the “Gizzie” story line, and where you can see him next– plus what’s in store for the other docs on Grey’s Anatomy, pick up the new issue of Entertainment Weekly on stands Friday July 24.
More Grey’s scoop:
Will Lexie eventually replace Mer?!
Look who’s returning this season
Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'Grey's,' 'CSI,' 'Torchwood,' 'Bones,' and more!
Question: Hey, do you have any Grey’s Anatomy news that doesn’t involve George or Izzie? –Salma
Ausiello: Yes — the entire cast will be following T.R. Knight out the door. At least series creator Shonda Rhimes is braced for them to. Eventually. She got to thinking about it both because of Knight’s exit and Ellen Pompeo’s impending maternity leave. “It’s going to be tricky,” Rhimes acknowledges. “Ellen is incredibly optimistic and somehow thinks she’ll be back and ready to rock ‘n’ roll. [But] I have a child, so I know that that’s not true. [So] we have a lovely story [on deck] that will take us into her maternity leave. And we have plans for some really interesting stand-alone episodes for [while she's gone]. But we’re heading towards the future of the show and eventually, unless we’re really lucky, everybody’s going to go. That’s what the end of season 5 taught me. So we’re looking at, How do we mess with that structure now while we have everybody and figure out ways in which, ‘What would we do without Ellen? What would we do if we had an episode without Patrick Dempsey?’ So season 6 is important. A lot of shows don’t make it through season 6 because they don’t know how to transition.” Can Rhimes envision Grey’s someday going on with Pompeo (and Mer) completely out of the picture?! “I don’t know” she hedges. “I clearly want Mer Grey on the show for as long as Ellen Pompeo wants to be on the show; that’s not even a question. But I think that there’s a possibility of [her leaving for good at some point]. I haven’t even thought that far. That’s the one blank spot I have in my head. I can’t really picture Mer Grey not on the show. But [at least] we have Lexie Grey. There is another Grey if we really needed one.” But would anyone watch Lexie Grey’s Anatomy? Would you? Scroll down to the comments! (BTW, here’s an exclusive first look at this week’s Grey’s-themed EW cover story, penned by yours truly!)
Question: Will Ellen Pompeo’s pregnancy be written into Grey’s Anatomy?
–John Ausiello: No. “Ellen is pregnant, but Meredith is not,” Rhimes tells me. “Meredith wouldn’t be pregnant [right now].”
Question: Now that Grey’s Anatomy has finally started production, you got anything? And I really mean anything. –Dana
Ausiello: Look for Owen’s PTSD to possibly flare up in the Sept. 24 opener. I say this because my Grey’s mole tells me that Seattle Grace’s go-to shrink, Amy Madigan, will appear in the second hour of the two-hour premiere.
Question: So, what exactly will you be doing during your virgin Comic-Con voyage? –Damon
Ausiello: You mean when I’m not riding around the convention floor in the Pope’s bulletproof jitney? I’ll be holed up in Entertainment Weekly‘s ultra swanky (or so they tell me!) suite interviewing lots of famous TV people on camera. The resulting video will then be quickly uploaded to the blog you’re currently reading, so check back often. But first do me a solid and send me some really smart questions to ask the folks listed below via ausielloscoop@ew.com. Oh, and as for the 75 of you coming to my very first Aushole gathering tonight, I can’t wait for you to tell me how much thinner I am in person to meet you! Kristen Bell Michael C. Hall/Dexter Lucy Lawless/Spartacus Jim Caviezel/The Prisoner Joss Whedon and Eliza Dushku/Dollhouse David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel/Bones The Big Bang Theory cast 24 cast Stargate Universe cast True Blood cast V cast Vampire Diaries cast Chuck cast
Question: I have a need for Speed! So will we be seeing Speed(le) in the flashback episode of CSI:Miami, or did Rory Cochrane turn it down? –Kristine
Ausiello: Believe it or not, Rory Cochrane turned ‘em down. I kid you not. Methinks someone’s still a little peeved about getting killed off. Question: Please more CSI: Miami scoop! –Jordan
Ausiello: The aforementioned flashback episode will reveal how Tripp lost all his hair — and it wasn’t because he was late to the Propecia party. As exec producer Ann Donahue explains, “We’ll see Tripp with a comb over and Calleigh says something like, ‘You know, bald men are really sexy.’ And then the next time we see him he’s shaved his head.”
Question: Will Grissom be joining Sara back on CSI early in the season? –Lois
Ausiello: No, but some old friends of his will be. Exec producer Carol Mendelsohn reveals to me exclusively that CSI will be bringing back a few members of the infamous Millander clan in this season’s second episode. “The last time we saw [serial killer] Paul Millander was in season 2 when Grissom had dinner at [his alter ego] Judge Mason’s house, because, if you remember Paul lived a double life as a judge. And we met Mrs. Mason and their young son, Craig. Well, Paul’s dead, but Mrs. Mason and Craig live on. And we will see them in episode 2.” Why? Keep reading for a possible clue…
Question: The season premiere of CSI is only two months away. I’m sure that you’ve gotten some kind of spoiler or tidbit to throw to us! –Andy and Rebecca
Ausiello: You can drop the “or.” I’ve got a spoiler and a tidbit, courtesy of exec producer Naren Shankar. First the tidbit: “You’re going to get an explanation for that ring Langston (Laurence Fishburne) still has on his finger in [episode 2].” Now for the spoiler: “We’re going to launch a new season-long serial killer arc. Starting at the end of our premiere, a brand new nemesis [will emerge] who has a very unique way of killing.” More unique than that whole miniature thing? “This time, the crime scene is always the body,” Shankar teases. “We’re calling him Dr. Jekyl.”
Question: Will David Ramsey (Anton) be back for the fourth season of Dexter? –Katya
Ausiello: Yes
Question: Any info on Bones? –Grace
Ausiello: The show is looking for an actress in her late teens to play Cam’s adopted daughter Michelle. I know what you’re thinking: “We’ve already met Cam’s adopted daughter Michelle!” Do I have to draw you a picture? Obviously, we’re going to learn that Cam’s got another adopted daughter around the same age and with the same name. Duh.
Question: Regarding the controversial hookup that Dan partakes in on Gossip Girl — is the show finally following the books and exploring Dan’s bisexuality? –Michael
Ausiello: That’s a negative. His controversial hookup is with a girl.
Question: Okay, I’m ready for another clue about the lead character getting shot multiple times. At least eliminate a show from the list. –Bruce
Ausiello: It’s not Mad Men.
Question: Any scoop on Nurse Jackie? –Soomi
Ausiello: Peter Facinelli’s Coop kisses a dude in the season finale.
Question: Out of all the fall pilots you’ve seen, which are your three favorite broadcast comedies and dramas? –Conor
Ausiello: Modern Family, Cougar Town, and Community are tops among comedies, while Parenthood, Vampire Diaries, and The Good Wife rate best among dramas. But I still have a bunch more to watch, including Flash Forward.
Question: What does ABC plan to do to reestablish Ugly Betty as a force again? –Dave
Ausiello: You mean aside from moving it to red-hot Friday nights? Well, it looks like the musical episode is finally going to happen in the spring. And they just hired Meadow Soprano to play Daniel’s new assistant. Oh, and Rescue Me‘s Adam Ferrera is guest starring as a Queens contractor who crosses paths with Hilda. That’s all I got at the moment.
Question: I’m sad Kirk Acevedo is leaving Fringe, but what I really want to know is if Ari Graynor is coming back for season 2. She and the niece added something special to the show, and showed us a different side of Olivia. –Tim
Ausiello: Yes, Graynor’s Rachel returns in the season premiere. Her involvement beyond that is TBD.
Question: Do you have any information on Barney and Robin on the next season of How I Met Your Mother? –Lynn
Ausiello: Their relationship will be one of two major focal points of season 5, per exec producer Craig Thomas. “Barney’s feelings for Robin are out there, and it seems like Robin might have feelings for Barney herself,” he says. “And it’s so much fun to write for two people who are emotionally illiterate like the two of them are.” (For the record, the other major season 5 story is the Mother being one of Ted’s students.)
Question: Any more scoop on Eric McCormack’s arc on Old Christine? –Joey
Ausiello: “He’s going to be a therapist in Matthew’s suite of therapist offices and I’m going to start to see him as a therapist,” says leading lady Julia Louis-Dreyfus, adding that, “a [possible] romance and plenty of dysfunction abounds.” JLD also tells me that Wanda Sykes’ upcoming late night talk show on Fox shouldn’t interfere with her day job as Christine’s sassy sidekick. “But I’ll let you know a couple of months in,” she adds with a laugh.
Question: Do you know if Kate Voegele, Ashley Rickards, and Stephen Colletti will be reprising their roles as Mia, Sam, and Chase next season on One Tree Hill? –Jillian
Ausiello: Yes, maybe, and yes.
Question: Are you doing the Press Tour Diaries this year? –Christine
Ausiello: Let’s get through the Con first, k?
Question: Any info on which ABC show Dominic Monaghan will be on this season? I’ve scoured the web high and low and couldn’t find any info. –Stacey
Ausiello: I think you mean what shows. And you’ll get your answer soon enough.
Question: I can’t wait for Cougar Town. Do you have an spoilers? –Becca
Ausiello: Courteney Cox’s old Friends will definitely be paying her a visit. “You and I both know that we’ll do that eventually,” concedes exec producer Bill Lawrence of a visit from Aniston, Kudrow, Perry, Schwimmer, or LeBlanc. “But right now [ABC] is marketing and selling Courteney, not the [possible] guest stars.”
Question: What episode marks the return of Jennie Garth to 90210? –Lee
Ausiello: That would be episode 3.
Question: Has anyone ever told you that you look a lot like Brandon from The Killers? –Melissa
Ausiello: I’m not seeing it.
Question: I’m wondering if you have some Glee scoopage. –LH
Ausiello: Gilmore Girls crossover alert! Mitchum Huntzberger (a.k.a. actor Gregg Henry) has been cast as Quinn’s dad!
Question: Wow! Torchwood: Children of Earth pretty much ascended to a BSG level of fraktacularness. Is there even the slightest chance that the franchise will continue? Personally, I can’t see it coming back from the emotional shock at the end. –Amy
Ausiello: First off, we’re only up to Part Four here in the States, so watch the spoilers, missy. Second, yes, Torchwood will most likely live on, according to T-boss Russell T. Davies. “I’m fairly confident the series [will continue] in some shape or form,” he says. “I will just sit down and invent new stories and characters — that’s what I’ve spent my entire life doing.” Wait a sec, new characters? Jack will continue to be the show’s central hero, right? “Oh, I would think so,” he says. “I would hope so. He’s absolutely fundamental to Torchwood.” (For more on the emotional shock that Amy referred to above, come back here tonight after Part Four airs. Trust me.)
Question: Will the events of Torchwood: Children of Earth be referenced in any way during the upcoming Dr. Who specials? –Patrick
Ausiello: “Not as such, no,” says Davies, who is editing Dr. Who‘s “great big finale” as we speak. “My God, these [specials] are brilliant. I’m really happy with them.”
Question: One day I’ll remember it’s Thursday and I’ll ask you something. –Mia
Ausiello: I’ll be here! Okay, that’s a wrap! Send questions/comments/anonymous tips/Comic-Con sightings of me to ausielloscoop@ew.com. Thanks for playing!
'Tudors' exclusive: Joely Richardson crowned Queen
I’m hearing Nip/Tuck’s Joely Richardson has
scored one of the hottest TV roles out there right now: Katherine Parr on
Showtime’s The Tudors.
Although unconfirmed by Showtime, a well-placed source tells me that Richardson will play Henry’s (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) last wife during Tudors’ fourth
and final season, which is slated to debut in Spring 2010.
Production on Nip/Tuck‘s final season wrapped last month, freeing Richardson up to take the gig.
A number of high profile actresses have circled the
plum part, including ****** **i*** and (as I previously reported) The X-Files’ Gillian Anderson.
Thoughts?!
'Ugly Betty' exclusive: Jamie-Lynn Sigler replaces Betty!
Yes, the headline’s misleading — but only slightly!
Sopranos vet Jamie-Lynn Sigler is joining the cast of Ugly Betty in the recurring role of Natalie, Daniel’s sexy, spiritual, funny new assistant, sources confirm to me exclusively.
Natalie replaces Betty, who was promoted to features editor in last May’s season finale.
See? Only slightly misleading.
Sigler will debut in Betty‘s second episode (the first after the two-hour premiere on Oct. 9).
Ratings: 'Bachelorette' Monday ratings bright, 'Dark' premiere slightly dim
Once again, ABC’s The Bachelorette was the most-watched new program on Monday night with 8 million viewers, according to preliminary overnight ratings. ABC also debuted their new dating reality series, Dating in the Dark, to an okay 6.4 million; the real success was the series win in the 10-11 p.m. time slot for the important 18-49 demographic.
