Press Tour Diary: 'Medium'

Tags: , News

Patricia-Arquette-Medium_dlWHO: Patricia Arquette, Jake Weber, and exec producer Glenn Gordon Caron
PREDICTIONS: Lots of Qs about the move from NBC to CBS.

4:01 pm/PST: The family element will remain a “huge” part of the show, says Caron. “We’ve got a bounty of stories to tell [about the kids] growing up.”

4:03 pm: Caron thought that by ending last season with a cliff-hanger NBC would feel compelled to renew it. “We saw how well that worked out.”

4:09 pm: Caron just dissed Heroes! Asked what it’s like being paired with Ghost Whisperer on CBS, the exec says, “Given our history, it’s nice to follow a show that people really like.”

4:11 pm: Spoiler alert! When the new season starts, “Allison comes out of the coma and she’s on a different network,” Caron jokes. Now for some real scoop: He’s planning a Mischief Night episode that inserts Allison into scenes from the original Night of the Living Dead. “It’s going to be the landscape of Allison’s dreams.”

4:18 pm: “We’re not in the buzz business,” says Caron of Medium‘s lack of hype. “We’re in the broadcast business.” For example, Chuck has a tremendous amount of buzz but that “hasn’t translated into people actually watching the show.” Wait a sec, he’s going after Chuck now! Be careful, buddy. That’s not going to play well with this crowd.

4:23 pm: Weber says he and Arquette immediately found it easy to “pretend that we’re married.”

4:24 pm: Caron won’t rule out a guest spot by Patricia’s bro, David. “I’ve been looking for something for him to play,” he says. “It’s my personal goal in life to work with every Arquette.”

4:27 pm: Caron can’t resist the urge to take a swipe at his former network. “CBS has already run more promos than NBC had in five years,” he says. “But I say that with love in my heart.”

4:31 pm: Arquette says she decided to do TV partly because “poor or crippled people can be entertained without having to go to the movie theater.” I think her heart was in the right place with that comment.

First comment! I love Medium and think it’s better than any show currently airing on NBC. Even Chuck. Sorry people but that show just IS NOT funny.

    • TBone

I agree. Chuck is a terrible show that reeks of faux-geekiness. They try so hard to portray Chuck as a geek and fail every time, they need to hire geeks to consult. They also need a comedy writer because the show is seriously unfunny. The only reason to watch are the beautiful women on it.

  • topazbean

That last comment from Arquette sounds like something Trey Parker and Matt Stone would come out with…

  • Justin

The reason Chuck was saved over Medium was the fact that its fans actually rallied for the show. Where was the Medium fans?

    • susan

We are older probably and didn’t know – based on posted ratings – that we were in trouble. When I hear a show is on the bubble and ratings are good I assume there’s some kind of personality conflict that won’t be resolved. Medium’s fans are still here and will be around on Friday nights to watch the show in real time. Thank you CBS.

    • Luis PJ

Dose Medium need a fast-food chain for support

      • Danny

No it just needs to be a more interesting show and have fans who matter. ;)

      • Ace

Actually I think Chuck was saved instead because it was more friendly to the 8PM or 9PM hour than Medium. Leno really killed Medium on NBC.

  • Rowan

Comparing Chuck to Medium is apples and oranges – but sounds more like sour grapes here. Chuck is brilliant and deserved to be picked up. Medium is also brilliant, but does not draw the right demographic. It should be on CBS where they skew older. As for Patricia’s comment – wonderful on the show or now, she sounds like a nitwit. I’ll still watch – I never thought of her as a part of a brain trust anyway.

    • Danny

Chuck is a great show and Medium is just boring.

      • auramac

Medium, ER, and Monk were the only shows I found to be “must-see TV..” along with Letterman, and then Conan. Medium is great. I hope it sticks around a long time, and shame on Jay Leno for insisting upon not one, but five nights. I was sick of him 5 minutes into his first Tonight Show- though he had been a great, edgy guest on Letterman’s show prior to that. Long Live Medium. To find it boring.. well, you might try some medication to help you with your attention span.

  • Rose

Medium should just be grateful they got picked up by CBS and go with it – the rest sounds like sour grapes. Besides NBC was going to give them 13 episodes and they wanted more so they went with CBS, good for them, but that doesn’t mean that Chuck took there spot. Sorry Medium, that you don’t have passionate fans. The potshots are juvenile

  • Alison

Medium is one of the best shows on TV and goes from strength to strength each season. For NBC to have canned it was just insane. Thanks CBS!

    • Danny

CBS: The old people’s network, where shows go to DIE!

  • leila

I love Medium and got frustrated when NBC moved it around it’s schedule. NBC does that with a lot of it’s older shows. I think that does more damage to viewership than anything. Medium is smart and entertaining and I glad I will be able to watch another season of Allison & Joe!

  • MC

What a moron. Chuck was beating Medium in the demo and not that far off in total viewers in a MUCH MUCH tougher timeslot as last season ended.

    What a disingenuous prick.

  • SP

The only people who like Medium at this point are people who watch ION television, rub on the BenGay and eat prunes.

    • Kalie

I’m 26 and I love “Medium”. It never really struck me as the kind of show only old ladies watch.

    • kate

Lol, well, I’m 27 and not only do I watch Medium, but I ALSO eat prunes. They’re good for you!
Anyway, I don’t watch Chuck although my mother, who just turned 56, LOVES that show. She also loves Medium. There are people who enjoy both shows. My favorite part of Medium is the family dynamic, especially the relationship between Allison and Joe (btw, Jake Weber is HOT!!!). The ONLY weak link IMO is Lee’s girlfriend who (THANK GOD) we don’t see very often. She is a TERRIBLE actress. Hopefully the move to CBS garners a new woman in the role of Detective Scanlon’s girlfriend. Ahem. I’m free. :)

      • L

I’m afraid that’ll never happen. She’s Glenn Gordon Caron’s wife in real life!

I watch also for the family dynamic, who wouldn’t want a husband like Joe!

  • evelyn27

Jerks. He can mess with Heroes, I’m pretty over that show by now, but Chuck, was, is , and always will be a better show than Medium could ever dream of being.

    • Ace

I think the slam was meant for Heroes since Medium doesn’t directly follow Chuck. At least they better hope that’s what they meant. But I do agree that Chuck is better!

  • Steven

SP, I’m 18 so why don’t you just shut the hell up.

    It’s an intelligent show.

  • krranky

Ausiello framed it as such, but I don’t think Caron was trying to slam Chuck. His point just seemed to be that a relatively small but vocal fan base and a lot of media attention don’t necessarily equal high ratings (Veronica Mars, anyone?). His comment about Heroes was most definitely a diss, though. I guess the fact that no one here has complained about it proves his point.

    • Danny

I’m willing to give Heroes another chance but seriously the entire concept of the show Medium is worn out. It’s a boring show!

  • Tom G

It was never a question of “where were the medium fans” it was more like “why NBC didn’t you listen to the Medium fans” How can any show with Patricia Arquette fail? Interesting how some people consider 5 seasons a failure. Now that is funny

  • Melinda65

People who make derogatory sweeping generalizations are idiots who can’t fathom shows that are deeper than So You Think You Can Dance. (For those who can’t recognize it, that was sarcasm.)

As for GGC, I think it’s pretty cheap of him to slam any of his former network neighbors. Perhaps he should have been at Comic-Con where Chuck garnered plenty of screaming fans, and where stars of other shows took to mentioning the word “Chuck” for the reaction it got. NBC mistreated it for years, and deserves bitter comments to that effect, but to blame other shows is just petty and juvenile.

    • jenn

You were being sarcastic? As in, you really DON’T think SYTYCD is banal? Because otherwise, I’m not sure you know what sarcasm is. And now I’m forced to defend SYTYCD, because for what it is, a reality dance competition show, the dances themselves can be quite profound. Maybe not when you compare it to an hour of the best scripted show on TV right now (take your pick, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, True Blood, etc), but alongside other reality competition shows, it really is unparalleled.

About Medium, I think the fans didn’t rally because we had no idea it was in trouble. NBC deserves all the potshots it gets, because season after season they push the terrible Heroes down our throats–which hasn’t been good since the first season, and they are in love with what could’ve and should’ve been–instead of promoting a show that is consistent. As far as Chuck goes, it didn’t seem like he was attacking the show to me. Someone else likened it to VM, and that seems pretty accurate to me. Just because the people who like the show are buzzing, doesn’t mean the show is is getting watched. They have numbers and everything to prove that s h i t.

And Patricia Arquette isn’t stupid or clueless, she just has a wicked sense of humor. I thought it was funny.

    • kate

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!! You’re funny! You made a “derogatory sweeping generalization” whilst deriding people who do the same. That’s hilarious. At any rate, SYTYCD is an amazing show.
Did you attend ComicCon? HAHAHAHA!!! That’s awesome.
I’m fairly certain he wasn’t saying that Chuck had no fans to speak of, just that while Medium has been around for five years and has a steady following, Chuck wasn’t pulling in the numbers they wanted. OH WELL. CBS owned the rights to Medium even when it was on NBC, so as long as it’s still on the air, I’m happy. :)

  • darclyte

The fans of Medium didn’t rally to its defense, because there was never word that it was in trouble. In fact, the real life Allison Dubois Twittered or otherwise revealed that she had been told that it had been renewed (and there were still a couple of episodes left to air) and then suddenly NBC didn’t have it on its Fall schedule, and when asked about it, the NBC folks just said that it didn’t get renewed and they never heard from the fans. It sounds to me as though NBC had somebody lie to Allison so that they wouldn’t get deluged by…peanuts, booties, skittles, size medium clothing…or whatever the fans decided that they’d send in to the NBC folks to show their support of the show. And no, even if Allison is a “real” psychic, she wouldn’t necessarily know that she’d been had. Remember, “it doesn’t work that way.”

    • Melinda65

I had read a rumor of Medium’s renewal at TVGuide.com, and most people took it as truth. I was gobsmacked to read that NBC had canceled the show, along with millions of other fans, I’m sure.
